Here are some great books I've read on philosophy and psychology.
1.- The Enlightenment: And Why It Still Matters - Anthony Pagden (genre: philosophy)
2.- How to win every argument - Madsen Pirie (genre: philosophy, real life)
3.- Ecology, Ideology and Power - Donald Gibson (genre: philosophy, environmentalism)
4.- Scarcity: The New Science of Having Less and How It Defines Our Lives - Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir (genre: psychology, real life)
'The Enlightenment' (1630s - 1789) is a defining aspect of Western history. Many ideas today are reactions against The Enlightenment. Pagden thinks its critics misunderstood 'The Enlightenment', such that the reactions against it is really reactions against a caricature of The Enlightenment.
'How to win every argument' is a book about debate, explaining how debates are twisted by rhetoric, bad argument, etc. Done in a funny way - from the POV of how you too can twist debates by employing logical fallacies. By actually enumerating and giving examples of logical fallacies it helps you avoid falling for them.
'Ecology, Ideology and Power' is a critique of environmentalism from a 'progressive' point of view. Today, you probably understand 'progressivism' as the politics and ideas advanced by 'progressives'. In fact, many of the ideas of modern 'progressives' are not actually progressive! They are regressive. Gibson explains his philosophy as a version of progressivism which is hated, despised, and gaslit by today's 'progressives'.
Scarcity - is about the psychology of scarcity. It explains how thoughts and actions are dominated by scarcity when people suffer from it. The authors don't point to an exit from this scarcity cul de sac. There may be none. But if you're trying to understand how and why people act how they do, this does a good job.

I am so grateful for this. I struggled as a teenager in school because everybody in my advanced courses absolutely loved to read while I could not be bothered. Fiction was not something I had any interest in, and my teachers would always remind me that I could never be successful in my career goals unless I developed a love for reading, or at least a habit of doing so. I love this type of book, however, and will definitely be purchasing a few of them!

I liked "The Gift of Fear".
The main point of the book is that the instinct of fear may not always be accurate, but it's always worth stepping back from a situation to analyze that feeling. The author is a professional threat analysist and uses real cases (with the consent of his clients) to point out where fear of a situation saved their lives. He then details the subconscious psychology behind the fear and some of the psychology of a potential attacker.

I should get another copy of Love's Executioner since I gave mine away. A couple of books I think are great are A General Theory of Love by Lewis, Amini, and Lannon and The Road Less Traveled by M Scott Peck. A couple of authors I think are great are Oliver Sacks and Peter Kramer. One book that connected psychology, philosophy, and brain science for me was The Ego Tunnel by Thomas Metzinger.

Soren Kierkegaard: Fear and trembling. great read into understanding religion as a atheist. He has a very scientific mindset while still being able to portray spirituality and its importance for humans. It also arms you with great qoutes you can throw at the misguided and vain.
Thus spoke zarathustra - great book that probably deserves at least 3 read through and an essay from the reader. You wont fully comprehend it on your first go, I also dont feel like reading it 2 more times.

Man’s search for meaning is a beautifully horrifying book imo, crazy to imagine how Frankl managed to come up with that masterpiece whilst going through the terror of a concentration camp. Cool video idea too btw, it would be great to do these every year and review the books you’ve read haha!
Two books I would highly recommend are:
The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker
On becoming a person by Carl Rogers
The denial of death is a heavy book but also provides insights into; why the idea of “forming a legacy” is of a concern to people and how this develops, covering the existential work around death and focuses heavily on the work of Otto Rank (A psychotherapist who trained under Freud and has published a number of his own books too).
I am currently reading the Carl Rogers book now as I wanted to read something more positive and forward thinking. Considering Carl Rogers laid the groundwork for the humanistic/person-centres therapy models, reading how he came to these foundations is a delightful delve into psychology’s history and will probably help you as a clinician! Reflecting on my own practice and what is mentioned in the book I feel more assured in my approach when I start my new job as an assistant psych!

    • @TheOxfordPsych

Yeah that’s why I find it so intriguing - the fact that he managed to keep manuscripts of his own work whilst in camp and rewrote bits that were missing!
Yalom in existential psychotherapy also talks about death anxiety and the idea of “legacy” through achievement or children which I find fascinating so I’m thinking your recommendations will be equally fascinating to me, thank you!! Rogers sounds like the one I’ll tackle first in your recommendations!

A really interesting book that I would recommend which I believe combines philosophy with psychology is "Grit, why passion and resilience are the secrets to success" by Angela Duckworth. It is pretty much explains why talent in one area on its own it's not enough if you want to succeed in life. To achieve a goal you need talent, resilience and be methodological for years are the key ingredients for achievements.

I’m doing a masters in psychology and I agree with you that the real psychologists of the past were the ancients. And I don’t enjoy the factor analysis and quantitative number side of things but it’s a necessary part of discovering human behaviour. I would highly recommend reading crime and punishment and Albert Camus the plague and also leonardo da Vinci’s biography by Walter issacson. I read them all this year and they are life changing. Keep up the good work. Also if you want to expand you’re knowledge of the human brain, ADHD 2.0 that came out recently. 30 percent of people in jail have adhd and the neuroscience behind it is fascinating and if you follow my channel I try to explain it. 4-6 percent of people suffer with it so it’s not trivial and it’s misunderstood. Just finished Crazy Like Us by Ethan Watters. Wow, what a book! I agree with your high rating of it. A breathtaking insight into how we almost use science to bolster up our 'Western' religion, so to speak, rather than hold our culture up as a variable to be scrutinised. Surely our knowledge and understanding of human distress would greatly benefit if our mental health professions had more courage to step aside and be neutral of culture, instead of colluding with it.

Appreciate you actually reading Peterson. I think he rambled far too much in his book and it could be far more concise, I also get lost in his religious interpretations. Other than that, I commend you for actually reading him, he makes some fascinating points. Many people have been emotionally primed to seethe at his very name because their in group conditions them to do so. Don’t agree with all of his political takes, but he’s a great psychologist.
I highly recommend reading Jonathan Haidt too (The Righteous Mind especially), since he explores many topics in his books too, and it’ll change your view of human nature. Paradigm shift type of book. Thanks for the list, from an undergrad in psychology 👍🏼

I personally won't read defining decade because logically peoples circumstances are different. Someone who hasn't been learning skills who has a kids mortgage and car to pay for before 30, aren't gonna move far in life. But someone who has zero ties, lives with parents, has savings, no kids, no car etc... Can still change their life as nothing in weighing them down. I do agree with female fertility part though, that's a real thing. But for men the window not as small. And for the brain capping of its last growth spurt in your twenties is actually age 25. But the brain continues to still change well into old age, It can just get a little more difficult to change as we get older.

This has been supercool! I'm interested in taking up some new psychology books to dabble into because I'm thinking of going back to college for psychology, just trying to figure out if it's the right thing and whether I want to go a forensic route or clinical. I know I'm going to cop "The Defining Decade" and "12 Rules of Life" because I think they will be very beneficial for what I"m going through right now. :), thanks a mill!

Fantastic list - I agree with every single one listed and thank you for introducing me to Irvin Yalmon. Check out "The Lucifer Effect" by Philip Zimbardo.
As for Jung...start with Jung's Map of the Soul by Murray Stein.
Then, try progressing onto The Darkening Spirit by David Tacey.
After those two it pays to pick a specific field of Jungian Psychology to study - it could be Jungian Analysis, or it could be the Mythopoetic men's movement which formed an entire support network based on many Jungian and mythological ideas, or it could be how to apply Jung's ideas to a conventional topic. Choosing an area of focus at first with Jung is a good idea though, because it will let you gain a deeper appreciation of his core concepts when you can see them expressed at a low and high level in a specific domain of knowledge rather than trying to at first connect them haphazardly from many different places.

I’ve met Zimbardo in person!! Thank you for taking the time to map out suggestions for books, so grateful for that. Yes I think that’s my issue I’m not sure where to start - I guess dream analysis / shadow self / archetypes are stuff I know of Jung that id like to know more about

Loveddd the way you explained each book!! I would love to read the top suggestions however I'm a high school senior and I'm afraid that it wouldn't be easily digestible for me. Would you say "man's search for meaning" would be a good fit for a highs schooler? or is there another book on the list that's better suited?

Hi Aika ! I’m so happy that I found your channel. I’m literally on the same exact path that you’re doing however , I am way younger haha. I’m currently a junior in undergrad but I’m technically a sophomore since I’m going to do another year, just really want to take my time. After that I’ll apply to graduate school for the same thing you’re doing. I too struggle with reading and was never a reader but I’m really trying to get into it now so it’s cool that you said the same thing. I always wanted to go to graduate school in the UK but I’ll stick with my home city in NYC since I just can’t go over there :( . I’ll be living through that journey with you then lol

18:49 I'm glad Alain De Botton didn't become a clinical psychologist and went down the philosophy route instead - he has more freedom to think, to express his wisdom and isn't constrained by his profession's desperation to present its knowledge as science. I feel CP can learn at lot more from Alain than Alain can from CP.
