Purchased the packa and the ULA rain kilt about a year ago. Really pleased with both. I am an old bushcrafter and decided I wanted to go light for a change. Most of my purchases have been at your recommendation and you havent steered me wrong yet! Thanks for the video!
It's a great piece of gear if you plan on doing a lot of hiking. If you're a car camper, or plan on hiking in and staying in an area for a while it might not be the most practical purchase. If I were doing anything where I would be spending my days primarily walking on a trail, this little beaut is a no-brainer. The Packa is one of those pieces of gear that make trail life a little better.
Discovered this a few months ago. He's been making these things a long time but it seemed like not many folks knew about him. Glad to see this featured here. It's a great design specifically for backpackers that solves a lot of problems with other systems.
An oldie yet a goodie! Years ago, I bought an eVent packa second-hand from a nice fella at hammockforums. It really...elevated my perspective! I liked the "jacket-like" feel of the eVent (although heavier vs. Silnylon) and it continues to deliver me comfy hikes here in Coffee Crispanada. Good people, good product. Keep preachin' the powers of the piney woods Shug!
did 1000 miles of the AT last Spring, finishing this Spring...walking for Make a wish... raised 6400.00 so far...got 1200 miles to go....the rain jacket is the bomb....wow.... love your humor too
LMAOROTF!!! Man you're a piece a work! Hope I run in to you out there on the trail sometime. Love my Packa too. Got me all the way from Springer Mountain to Mahoosuc Notch. Sadly, it was pouring on my way through there and all the abrasion from dragging myself through all those nooks and crannies finally wore a few spots through the pack cover part. So I limped through the rest of the trail with a Patagonia rain jacket (only one they had that fit me at the next outfitter I got to). BUT, the good news is that when I got home I ripped out all the stitches so I could use my old Packa as a pattern, bought me some dyneema fabric and made me another one. Only this one weighed only 3.5 oz! 1 oz for the heavier dyneema on the pack cover, and 2.5 oz for the parka, zipper & draw cords. I also put some velcro tabs on the zipper cover so I could tack it closed without even using the zipper for even more ventilation yet great coverage. When I have my tarp with me I can leave my pack in the pack cover and stand it up in the tall opening of the tarp to act as a wind/rain block while still keeping my pack dry. I use it as a wind shirt. I use it for warmth when I start out early in the morning and it's still cold so I don't have to wear a warm layer only to have to stop 15 minutes down the trail when I warm up. Instead I just pull the parka on, hike until I warm up and them tuck it back in under the cover while I walk without missing a step. I use it in the rain of course, and as a ground sheet for my pack in the vestibule of my tent, and when it's dry it's a great pillow. Literally one of my most favorite and versatile pieces of gear at only 3.5 oz! But even at 11 oz it was so versatile that it was totally worth it to me. Get you one!
I like it . The fact that you can literally take it off but still leave it covering the pack is good and so much easier than having to take off the pack to get a rain jacket out of the pack pocket. Personally I think I would use that big mesh pocket for holding a tarp, then you could hang the tarp all without removing the pack at all. Very clever idea and less likely to lose your pack cover if it is also your jacket.
Hiking over the summer I learned to accept the rain. Fast drying light clothes stay wet for maybe an hour. The only thing I really worry about it wet feet. Cool idea for cooler climates though imo.
Camino trail in Spain?....I never have. Seems to be kind of a bit of a roadwalk. We have fires up north and my wife broke her right kneecap so I am a footman, driver and butler of late~~~
Well Howdy Shug ! My name is Jerry Propst from Gastonia NC you know where that is ! I love your Vids Always good for a Smile ;-) ! Im 58 and Im telling you I admire your Physical ability to do the Gorge . I pretty much grew up camping on Wilson Creek on Brown Mtn. but I nexer really backpacked (Unfotunatley) . I was in troop 30 at Olney Presbyterian in Gastonia during the 70's loved it and miss all the guys . Ill send You an IM on computer later ! Keep on Keeping On ! Jerry
Have to agree. I really like the idea of being able to, essentially, put your rain jacket on or take it off as you walk. Without having to take off your pack. For those days where is starts and stops raining every half hour.
I just bought one of thes and planning on taking it out for a rainy weekend for testing. I expect it can probably replace my traditional raingear at a lighter weight and more ventilated than traditional raingear.
Think I'm gonna order one......I'm a big man, 6'2" /260pd/Wide & Thick Shouldered. I'm thinking this Packa and a Long DIY/Homemade Rain Kilt...that way I can get coverage down to "Lower" Calf but 12" from my heel. Don't want to sacrifice/obstruct my stride, with full coverage and breathability. Think this is is right way to go here. Personally I'm tired of jackets, on pack, off pack, on/off back pack cover to get or stow my rain gear. Thanks Shug and you have a great hike & hang out there !!!
Frigging genius video and goods! I was actually sitting on my couch thinking of design like this, so I started googling hybrid Pancho etc....found packa! Turns out they only couple hours south of me lol. they nailed it better then what my prototype would of been! Lol definitely going get one!
So enjoyable to watch and that is a great cover. I'm disappointed I bouught one of your t-shirts and wear it in high public areas and still did not encounter another shug fan. But I know they are out there. Just a matter of time until I meet someone who enjoys your videos as much as me. I'm sure we'll become instead best friends. Thanks
Nice. I have been thinking of getting something like that. I sweat like crazy in my expensive gor-tex jacket in warm weather rain. I often decide to just get wet and put on dry clothes and rain gear at camp.
Your videos are awesome, really like watching them. The Packa looks very versatile and I will probably get one. It's the difference in being wet or dry in the woods with versatility and pit vents lol. Thanks again for your time and videos.
Lol when you said "Mickey, you need to get you some gear" (or something to that effect) I almost fell out of my chair laughing! Of course I do, Shug, of course I do :P
omg, 'poncho mode' totally cracked me and my wife up!! thanks for another fun & informative vid shug! hey, whens the next shug sale? I need t whoooo buddy t-shirt brother!
MightyFine!!! thank you very much. my packa goes with me on every trip. it makes a good pillow, when it's dry. more than once, i've zipped it around the foot end of hammock for added warmth.
another good gear review. tell you the truth i think im a fanboy of yours. you keep me interested through ou the vid even if im not going to buy it. good job!
I have a packa and have used it like 3 times. I have a few concerns. It is a bit tight trying to go around my AG 65. Material is really thin and I have already gotten a few snags in it. So still trying to make up my mind about it. But thinking good idea just not very practical for me. But this video helps a lot.
Great bit of kit, I gotta say it though shug, your ad lib lyrics to your make it up as you go songs, ain't gonna top the charts. 😂😂😂😂😂, just pulling your leg shug, as always, great presentation
vampires... hah What I like most about the packa is its multi-use features. Definitely made with the backpacker in mind while on the move. As any camper knows, you're gonna get a little damp out there : )
Hey Shug! Thanks for all you do to inform and entertain. I was wondering what size paka you would recommend for a ULA circuit? I’m a large but I wonder if the pack requires a largeX paka size.
@@shugemery yes! I really want to save up to get it. Do you think it's a bad idea for colder weather? I still would really like to use it as a cold weather/wind rain coat.
Best hiker videos eva!! Funny, smart and informative atb Shug! Keep em comin’... quick question, you live in MN but where are you from originally? Forgive me but I don’t get a Minnesota accent from you but a little southern (ofc that could be your play that you do) ok well new sub and iove what you do! Thx so much and for sharing! Have a great day...blessings.
Oldie but goldie ... hey did you pick up another Packa? Looks too new for the use I know you've put on one! HA! Loved the "Packa Poncho Song"! LOVE ME PACKA TOO!
I did. First one is still good. Just a couple of small tears. Went to buy another and he offered me a freebie for all the sales he got from folks seeing the first one I have used for years.
Oh I'm not afraid to spend money on gear like my Osprey pack my Lowa boots and all my Kuhl clothing-- gotta have good gear when packing in the Bighorn Mts where I live. This looks over priced.
You could put the handles of your hiking poles in your hip pockets, the tips of the poles out the sleeves and turn your Packa into a personal hang glider for a quick flight down Linville Gorge! I'm sure it's covered by the manufacturer. right?
Heya Shug, thanks for the video. The Packa looks really good. Does water pool in the area between your neck and the pack? That little square piece of plastic you carry sure sees a lot of use :) Cheerio!
The Packa pack a peck a packing. You also put pounds a pennies to procure the pricey Packa. So, probably put off purchasing a Packa cause I lacka the scratcha. It's the ol' hole in the Hefty for this lefty. But it's a lovely garment. Che Bella, Ciao
So I bet all the folks who do t like the price of the Packa have no problem spending $150 on a tarp or $60+ on a hammock. Both of which are basically fabric sewn into a square shape.... I have a packa, yes they are pricey, but completely worth the money in my opinion. I have never had a better rain coat option for backpacking.
Stitches : no Velcro is needed or wanted. Works great as is. The key to the packa is its loose fit and rapid partial or full deployment. Deploys fast and early....EARLY!
If you think that material cost $40 you is cray cray. Anyhow, I didn't say it didn't work right, I was interested until I saw the price, no way I pay $120 for a small, thin nylon tarp that's way oversized and bulky. I like the concept- no gap between the pack and you body therefore the pack is dry all the way around. $50 and I might be a player, not $120.
These are custom made for your pack. Cedartree asked me what specific pack I have so he could size it for that pack. I used one for 2 months last Summer on the AT. I would buy it again.
That's a really neat looking rain jacket, but it's quite pricey. I'll be passing on this one, but if you a really serious hiker, or have a lot of expendable income, then enjoy it.
Purchased the packa and the ULA rain kilt about a year ago. Really pleased with both. I am an old bushcrafter and decided I wanted to go light for a change. Most of my purchases have been at your recommendation and you havent steered me wrong yet! Thanks for the video!

Works up here in sligthly cool rain.

seems like an ideal summer hiking in the rain solution!

A very different piece of gear.

I like mine in warmer weather when it rains as it ventilates very well.
Thank YOU sir for showing me this. I was in a moral quandary just the other day regarding this very situation.
Ahhh...those moral quandries.
What a beautiful hat you have there Shug.
I do like a pork pie hat.

I have a new 75 liter Polish army pack and am looking to get a pack cover for it, that thing would be majorly awesome
Check the sizing info.

Most Shug folk are in the deep woods!
Nice. I have been thinking of getting something like that. I sweat like crazy in my expensive gor-tex jacket in warm weather rain. I often decide to just get wet and put on dry clothes and rain gear at camp.
The venting is the best part for those reasons.
Nice piece of gear for those rainy days ya' just gotta get outdoors! ZZ.
In warm-ish weather it does a great job.
Nice bit of gear , with the four arms for a minute i thought you were a human tick! Scary....Real Scary... only the maple king can save us now. ^^
Haaaa!
great piece of gear. I may get one one day if I find it on sale . thanks shug

The ventilation is key for me.
That's what sets it above the others. Poorly ventilated rainwear is misery
Very interesting product, thanks for the tour Shug.
It is. Thanks.

mucho obligato.
That's some dang talent there. Keep it up Shug.
Thankee.
A consummate entertainer, as always!
I am bowing here.
this is one of the most entertaining videos I've ever seen. 🤣 And I think I'll buy one!
I still use mine several trips a year. The vent very well.
I like it. Looks like it would make a great pillow too.
I usually sit on mine.
sitters are quitters, or is that spitters are sitters? or quitters? oh hell!
Where did you get all your material . . . from Red Skelton? Hey, thanks, Shug, for all the information on the unique piece of gear.
Just off the cuff stuff.
omg, 'poncho mode' totally cracked me and my wife up!! thanks for another fun & informative vid shug! hey, whens the next shug sale? I need t whoooo buddy t-shirt brother!

I like the cut of your jib!
I didn't know these existed and now I feel like I need one.
They have been around a while. Had mine since 2010. It has served me well.
Shug, you always make my day!!!!! I like the packa it's just way way over priced! Dutch help!!!!!! You can do it!
Price is subjective to the need of an individual.
shugemery very true!

It is delicate for a bushwack.
Not for bushwhacking. Common sense should prevail. Few hikers go off trail.
Hammock Dave Shug is not a true hiker? What is your definition?
well the peeps i was responding to deleted their comment. so it doesn't make sense. shug's a great hiker
If Shug is not a hiker there's no hope for the rest of us to claim it.
Great bit of kit, I gotta say it though shug, your ad lib lyrics to your make it up as you go songs, ain't gonna top the charts. 😂😂😂😂😂, just pulling your leg shug, as always, great presentation

Your the best Shug 👍🏻
vampires... hah
What I like most about the packa is its multi-use features. Definitely made with the backpacker in mind while on the move.
As any camper knows, you're gonna get a little damp out there : )
For sure for the blood suckng backpacker.
Love my packa. It has been flawless on my 2017 AT thruhike
Love hearing that!
Love the sweet Orange Crush t-shirt.
Nice soft shirt.
Hey Shug! Thanks for all you do to inform and entertain. I was wondering what size paka you would recommend for a ULA circuit? I’m a large but I wonder if the pack requires a largeX paka size.
Nice to have extra room but I’d contact the Packa owner for better info. I’d say X Large

Thankee. I was born in Northern Ireland...lived around the world with Navy parents and grew up in North Carolina from 4th grade onward.
Thanks. Looks like a nice piece of gear.
Y'elcome.
I wasn't going to order it, but since I only have one of everything I am not on the ball. And by gum I need to be one the ball!
Haaaa!
The Packa company sent me a knew one after years of use when the some of the seam tape came off. Not sure if that's policy but it happened to me.
Good service!

shugemery most excellent!
$120!? Wowsers! Looks more like a $30-$40 deal.
Jeff Vollmer: Yikes....never ever go into an REI if you think this is expensive!
Specialized gear costs. Just showing it as it has served me well.
True. I see $320 rain jackets there.
Pack covers alone are $25-$30 so this looks like a decent deal to keep EVERYTHING including your shoulder straps dry.
Oh I'm not afraid to spend money on gear like my Osprey pack my Lowa boots and all my Kuhl clothing-- gotta have good gear when packing in the Bighorn Mts where I live. This looks over priced.
Thanks nice looking cover until next time my friend
Thanks.
Great review as usual. I appreciate all that you do, the way that you do all that you do. Will we see a review of that new Super fly tarp?
It is in a few trip reports. Just a tarp with doors. Big. Not planned on reviewing it. But one never knows. Great tarp.
2:24 Ode to Pancho Mode. Genius!
Was spitballing the song!
"You need to get on the ball Mickey" hahahahahahaha!
Not even sure where that came from.
Love your videos. Keep them coming
So I shall.
You could put the handles of your hiking poles in your hip pockets, the tips of the poles out the sleeves and turn your Packa into a personal hang glider for a quick flight down Linville Gorge! I'm sure it's covered by the manufacturer. right?
I'll try it off Shortoff!
Shug....your my hammock hero
I am the Duke of the Doofs.
Heya Shug, thanks for the video. The Packa looks really good. Does water pool in the area between your neck and the pack? That little square piece of plastic you carry sure sees a lot of use :) Cheerio!
Never had it pool there as far as I know. I cherish that small plastic square. Thankee.
That is simply brilliant thanks for telling us about it Shug think I will order one.
I have enjoyed mine over the years.
The Packa pack a peck a packing. You also put pounds a pennies to procure the pricey Packa. So, probably put off purchasing a Packa cause I lacka the scratcha. It's the ol' hole in the Hefty for this lefty. But it's a lovely garment. Che Bella, Ciao
a pretty penny for the Packa
Haha love that long way catch! Do you find it ok to wear the parka without a packsack?
It works just fine that way too.
Hey there shug, I wanted to ask about green bean, or more what you use now that green bean is gone.
My new Greenbean, My Chameleon, Blackbird XLC. I switch around a lot. I'm a man of many hammocks.
Unrelated but I need my one of the Purdy (pretty) boil shirts...
Maybe November they will be offered again. Thankee.
Laughed and cried a bit :P
Me too.
Much better than my old poncho. Good gear costs.
I hear what you're saying. I have military goretex jackets that don't do half what this does and they were close to $100 surplus!
That a really innivative cover i love it :)
It is a very different piece if gear.
It would be great to be able to roll them up and velcro or something else to hold them up at your shoulders and easily accessible.
Stitches : no Velcro is needed or wanted. Works great as is. The key to the packa is its loose fit and rapid partial or full deployment. Deploys fast and early....EARLY!
It can just hang off the backpack until needed.
I like this accent of yours
Theenk yoo.
You know Shug , you actually look good in the packa ! Go figure !
Also look good in a parka!
ouh SHUG, you're so cool and so funny... i love you, really. ( dont get afraid now, hahaha)
I so scared! Thankee.
Great review bro!
Thankee. A very unique piece of gear. I love how well it vents.
That's better than my snugpak poncho.
I like it. Mainly the ventilation.
So you have to have your backpack on to have rain protection
Nope...you can still wear it without the backpack. I've done that a lot.
That's a versatile unit ShugEm
It sure is. I have always enjoyed walking in the rain in it.
Sweet...if it's warm, I just prefer to get wet
Awesome. Keeping this one in mind
Yessir.

Shug ihave a question in the winter I go of the frozen but hang is a 0F enoth or I need a minus 10 quilt
You could stack to UQs or use a pad to supplement a UQ. It usually gets below 0º.
Hey Shug, when using the packa, is it rain-proof enough to forgo a pack liner inside your backpack? Thanks....
Yes...unless your pack will be sitting out in the rain while you are wearing the Packa without your pack on.
@@shugemery That is very sound advice. It does sound a bit like something my wife would say to me! Perhaps we are soulmates too!😀
@@tsugasouc4050 Haaa. I tote a small piece of plastic to drape over my pack if it is off my back while hiking. Otherwise it is under my tarp.
@@shugemery Thanks for your response; part of the fun of all this stuff is working out how to deal with different situations.
Thumbs up for the cool Orange Crush t-shirt
Aye!

I have used mine a lot over the years.

Hey Shug, if you happen to find this comment 6 yrs later, do you still like and wear the Packa? Or have you found something else you like better now?
I do use it for warmer wet weather as it vents so well.
How much does this item cost if you don't mind me ask
Best to check the Packa website for options....www.thepacka.com
First comment love you shug
Yessir.
Very cool , thanks
For sure.
Very nice thank you
Y'elcome.
That's a really neat looking rain jacket, but it's quite pricey. I'll be passing on this one, but if you a really serious hiker, or have a lot of expendable income, then enjoy it.
I just wanted to show it as I get asked about it a good bit. It has been worth it to me for my backpacking quests.
I'll bet you were voted Class Clown or Most Likely to Suceed?
$$$ on the Clown
Shug you make my day!
Voted "most likely to succeed as a Clown"!
If U had a chicken and half that laid an egg and half in a day and half, how much would a pound of its butter weigh?
