Another great one Colin. My auntie worked at Whymans the clothing factory in the fifties and sixties. I lived quite near to the estate so remember a lot of it being built, De La Rue and the NCB offices to name two. Funny you mention Orell and Brewster that were one of the first companies. They split as a company and old Mr Brewster went to a building in Dunston, I worked in the motor trade in the mid seventies and got to know him a bit; he was a real old engineer. Sadly he died around 1978. Keep them coming Colin, it makes me smile at the memories.
It’s great to see your pictures I started work at Mary Harris in 1973 then went to Lamp Metals ltd which was part of Osram great memories of the valley started to learn to drive there and got my first speeding ticket there learned to ride a motor bike on the valley and also passed my advanced driving there loads of memories of team valley great vid thanks.
I learned to drive there,Colin. My dad took me out in his Super Minx Estate in 1973.I had 8 lessons with RB Driving school at £1.50 each, and passed first time. The valley was MUCH quieter then !!!!!!
Lots of my family have worked there for over 30 years and I just can't believe these pictures it's unreal really, me sons work there for over 20 yrs wait till I show them these wonderfull archive's thank you so much 🙏
Hi Colin. My dad worked at Reyrolle Parsons on Queensway for years during the 70s. I started my working life at Express Engineering, also on Queensway at that time in 1979. I was only there seven months or so before getting a motor mechanic apprenticeship elsewhere in Gateshead. My everlasting memory of working “on the Valley” is the smell of bread from Hunters The Bakers first thing in the morning 😁. Great memories. Thank you for posting
We used to drive through the trading estate in the 1950's on the way to see relatives in Winlaton. As a kid it seemed fantastic, so modern and with the large expanse of duel carriageway, so rare in pre motorway Britain.
What a great vid showing a great collection of pics! That Team Valley estate always has a weird feel to it, in my opinion. There's nowhere to eat really. I wonder where all those people in the factories and offices eat. The retail park has a few places but is not that accessible. I can't imagine Sainsburys being a Safeway! That Osram light bulb factory was very well illuminated at night - still I guess they had plenty of light bulbs!
great video, thanks. my dad worked at Dunlop and we lived in Lobley Hill, really remember it before the A1 was there. and did my first driving lessons there as well
I played there at weekends as a kid in the woods near Ingersoll rand then worked my apprenticeship at Rose Forgrove . Even learned to drive and passed my test there
Fascinating footage, cheers for posting this up. Quite surreal to see how it all started compared to how it is today. I worked there very briefly in the late 90's, was a nice place to work - easy commute & at the time easy to park (not so now). There seems to be very little history about it so it's good to see footage like this.
Thanks Colin my dad worked at the Dunlop factory on the valley in the seventies as you say it was a good place to learn to drive it was also a good place to go jogging in the evening before the retail park was built.
Dad worked at Bren Manufacturing until his death in 1973, then in 1974 I worked a summer stint as a student at Hunters the Bakers....... And after my night shifts then walked home along the Valley and upwards through Felling te Leam Lane Estate. Saved the bus fares via Gateshead!!
Was Jimmy McCormack your dad? I was an apprentice working on the next lathe to his when he had his heart attack. A very sad day because he was a great machinist who helped me a lot..
knocked my first job back (1980 ) at De La Rue aged 16 and went in the Royal Engineers instead,my dad worked there but didnt fancy a factory job, never looked back
My Granddad worked at Armstrong Cork on the valley and used to walk there and back from top of Lobley Hill as buses started after the start of his shift and ended after his shift
Hi Colin I worked on the valley in my teens/early twenties, Beam optical , John Barrens, Queensway textiles to name but a few , in the sixties you could leave one job on a Friday and start another on the Monday , happy times
A lot of things change over the years but not the memories. Do you have any washing powder left? My dad worked at Stewarts and Lloyd's iron and steel complex but thankfully he didn't bring home any steel girders! Lol.
That lovely old house

Much better times carh. I still live in the past lol.
He was. His death was a shock but we still remember his joy for life and his big smile and every minute of the time we shared with him.
A lot of things change over the years but not the memories. Do you have any washing powder left? My dad worked at Stewarts and Lloyd's iron and steel complex but thankfully he didn't bring home any steel girders! Lol.
Lol James it all got used I remember these huge box's of DAZ in the cupboard. I am sure you could have made good use of the Steel James lol
My wife worked at Thomas de la Rue’s 1968-1975
I'm sure I've heard Osram's referred to as Swan's
My dad, mum and uncle worked at osrams
Where was the viaduct located?
It ran over at the South Side of Kingsway. It came down from Team Colliery ( Team Colliery Waggonway) down Allerdene past Allerdene Colliery
