It was all downhill from there. You would have thought the characters had actual personalities based on that or that the conflict of joining the kingdoms mattered when it doesn’t at all after the song is done.
Far longer than forever has some nice things about it but it’s far too cheesy and trying to just copy other things. This is not my idea felt like it’s own original idea. But that the prince and princess know each other here unlike the ballet kind of doesn’t fit to the later plot developments. First Odette seems to forgive Derek saying “what else is there” and Derek ought to know anyway Odette better after so many years to be fooled by an impostor. At least he should remember some of his complaints of nothing else when pressed.

@@sarasamaletdin4574 to be fair, Odette ended up being equally shallow so it makes sense she forgave Derek because his handsome smile is just so charming 🙄
But you’re absolutely right. The movie had serious potential, but ended up going with a generic love story where both protagonists have no personality other than their desire for each other.
And what little substance they tried to give with the whole, “looking past the looks” was botched right from the start because these characters never show that they have or want anything other than good looks.

SCOUTART yeah, I’ve heard about that from the creators themselves (not in person, though). The way it’s done sounds rather complicated, because it’s said to be a mix between hand-drawn and computer backgrounds. They’re evident in some shots leading up to the Princesses on Parade sequence and the ending where the camera zooms out and the credits start rolling. But everything else from the backgrounds to the characters was made using ink and paint rather than using the CAPS-system invented by Pixar in the mid-80’s and had been standard procedure since the release of Disney’s Rescuers Down Under in 1990 😊

      Pros:

      2. Rothbart was a good villain.
      3. Odette was likable
      4. Most of the songs were good.
      5. Roger’s. Enough said.
      Cons:
      1. Some plot inconsistencies (mostly the political stuff)
      2. Jean-Bob. Frog legs, anyone? (Seriously, I was hoping the gators would eat him)
      3. Some really stupid moments (like, Derek and Bromley firing arrows at any animal that moves? Like, wtaf!?)
      4. “Princesses on Parade”, one of the most pointless songs in animation. It adds nothing to the story, we already know Derek isn’t gonna marry those women, and the song just isn’t that fun to listen to.

The part where Uberta and Rogers don't recognize Odette wearing the black dress makes no sense. Yes it's lifted from the ballet but that made sense within the context. Here, they literally watched her grow up but suddenly wearing dark colors automatically makes her a different person.

Derek doesn't even really finish is subplot; he's just like 'What else is there?' and then he never says what else until the very end when he pulls some excuse out of his ass and says he admires her 'courage' and 'kindness'. Too bad it took her to die for him to realise there's more to life than looks. Sure, you could say that that scene where the others start ranting about how stupid he was being and he just found it too hard to explain what it was about her that he liked proved he liked more than her looks, but still, at least come up with something better than that. Define Odette and give her more of those traits that she has; make them more prominent in the story than just something he says at the end.

The biggest problem I have with the movie is that the story subverts the classic love at first sight cliche by showing us that the main characters actually loathe each others at first but later as they grow up they start to fall in love... and then the prince reveals that he actually fell in love only because she's beautiful, pissing her off. The rest of the movie is a rehashed Disney movie, a decent enough, but still not as good as the first part.

@@strawberrysoulforever8336 And that's why I like the first part so much. They basically hate each other so much that they almost kill each other once, but their parents really want them to get married and so they're forced to meet every summer. And when they finally fall in love he tells her that he loves her look and not the rest of her, basically proving that Odette's opinion was right and that their parents wasted years for nothing. And then the rest of the movie is a seriously underdeveloped Disney copy that really has a lot of potential but wastes it to make a pretty basic movie with not so memorable songs, except for the villain song that's kinda catchy, underdeveloped characters and a cliche ending.

If anyone's interested, I have an alternative idea to the Swan Princess. (This is solely my opinion and nothing more.)
The beginning is the same, but the marriage isn't called off. Instead, King William decides to travel back to his kingdom (called Grail) to inform everyone of the incoming marriage. Odette, who fears for him due to his old age, comes with him, but the carriage is attacked by Rothbart and his league of bandits. William is killed and Odette is kidnapped, but Derek and Uberta don;t learn of this until the next day.
Rothbart casts the spell on Odette as usual, but is kept at the lake by Rothbart's bandits who are instructed not to kill her for any reason. Odette slowly becomes friends with the older lady (don't remember her name), who is a practicing alchemist and wants to make powerful potions. Over time, Odette learns how Rothbart was once William's friend and advisor, but Rothbart got involved in forbidden magic, even implied to have engaged in human experimentation. When William found out, he had Rothbart banished and disgraced from Grail. Embittered and angry at this perceived betrayal, Rothbart plotted to bring down William and the kingdom of Grail.
When Uberta learns of King William's death, she becomes fearful of how Grail will react since their monarch died in the Kingdom of Silder (Uberta's Kingdom). This could cause them to blame Silder for William's death and lead to war, so she sends a messenger to inform Grail that William will be staying in Silder for longer than expected until she can come up with an idea to avoid conflict. Derek, with Bromley, searches for Odette since her body wasn't found at the ambush site, but is called back by his mother for an urgent matter.
Rothbart disguises himself as a Grail messenger to inform Queen Uberta that if King William does not return by the next full moon, then Grail will declare war on Silder. As expected, this sends Uberta into a panic and she starts sending out for princesses to marry Derek as to secure allies. Rothbart disguises himself again as the Silder messenger and forges a message claiming that King William is being held hostage and will not be returned unless he gives up his throne to Uberta. This riles up both Grail and Silder for war, just as Rothbart wants. He hopes to manipulate Grail into its destruction in revenge for King William banishing him years ago.
Derek manages to find Odette after fighting and killing some of Rothbart's bandits. Odette warns him that Rothbart is trying to start a war between Grail and Silder and he must convince Uberta that she is alive. She states that once she finds a way to break free of Rothbart's spell, which also prevents her from leaving too far from the Lake in human form, she will tell Grail the truth of William's death to prevent a war from happening. Rothbart learns of this, including Derek stating that he will kill the wizard for his crimes, and plays a cruel trick. He casts another spell on Odette: if Rothbart is killed, Odette will die as well. What happens to one will happen to the other.
Odette manages to convince the old woman to deliver a message to Derek with her handwriting to give to Grail after learning that her Kingdom's military is preparing to invade Silder. The old woman delivers the message to Derek and he attempts to tell them the truth of what happened, but since Princess Odette is nowhere to be seen, a battle seems imminent.
A battle breaks out and Rothbart watches from afar as the forces of Grail and Silder clash, but he's noticed by Derek. Derek confronts Rothbart and swears he will kill him, but he merely mocks the prince and tells him that if he dies, Odette will die as well.
Derek is forced into a hesitant battle with Rothbart as they fight with swords, trying to figure out a way to stop Rothbart without killing him. When Rothbart is about to kill Derek, Odette flies into the way and is killed by Rothbart's sword instead. His spell backfires on Rothbart, leading to both of them dying. As Odette dies, her body returns to a human form, causing the fighting to stop. The old woman, who had followed Odette, presents a potion that she had shown several times in their interactions that can heal injuries. She uses it on Odette and saves her while Rothbart stays dead since the spell is broken.
Odette informs everyone the truth of her father's death and marries Prince Derek.
For those of you who took the time to read this, thanks. I hope you like this idea.
Edit: I changed Rothbart's motivation because I felt I made him a bit too tragic. I felt he works better as an unsympathetic villain, one who's ruled by his ego and sees nothing wrong with his amoral actions.

This would be amazing for a retelling/reboot of the movie. Same animation from the 1994 film with added scenes/directors cut/never before seen scenes. I do think as amazing as the plot is the middle of the story is a bit more serious and complicated for a fairytale, the ending and beginning tho was amazing. I too have my own opinions of an alternative idea, the story stays the same but some scenes/songs are cut short to focus a storyline more in the perspective of odette. In my story Odette is cursed by Rothbart so she could suffer in eternity (instead of just killing her) as a Swan leaving her whole life, I wanted Rothbart's motives to be much more clearer, instead of just killing her for not marrying him, he would let her suffer by turning her into a Swan for the rest of her life, seeing her love marry another. I dunno that's just me, and it's not perfect.

It’s funny how this movie gets touted as being “revolutionary” because it’s the first animated film to not have the leads fall in love at first sight (if anything, they initially hate each other!) and that the prince has to name something about the princess outside of her looks, when there are animated films that not only did it first, but BETTER: “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin”.
Belle and the Beast didn’t fall for each other at first sight. In fact, they hated each other (which is understandable since the Beast imprisoned Belle in exchange for her father’s freedom and he constantly yelled at her), BUT they got to know each other over the course of seasons.
Aladdin was able to name things about Jasmine, outside of her beauty, to the Genie: *“She’s smart and fun”* (and keep in mind, Aladdin only knew Jasmine for AN HOUR!).
It also says something that Aladdin mentions her PERSONALITY FIRST, then her beauty.
You know things are bad when Disney animated films that are often criticized for their three-day romances have couples with better chemistry than Derek and Odette who have known each other since CHILDHOOD.

My problem with this movie was that it was all about how Derek and Odette were in an arranged marriage and although it was clear they weren't made for each other... Odette somehow manages to suddenly fall in love with him? She just suddenly changed her mind in like 5 seconds after seeing him all grown up. Then he tells her he likes her because of her looks so she changes her mind again. Later, he tries to rescue her (though he really didn't) and now she's back in love with him, even though he doesn't really love her for who she is. Worst love story ever.

The main flaws are that the storytelling has a few plot holes, used a little too much humor, and Jean Bob was absolutely OBNOXIOUS!!! But, it has nice animation, a few good songs, and, Rothbart was a great villain.

Derek's b-story has got to be the worst part of the movie. I know the prince didn't have much to do in the original Swan Lake, but if you're gonna make him more active in the story, don't give him the "beauty is only skin deep" lesson AND make him fall for the dumbass of mistaking Odette for someone else.

I do not have an interest in checking out the CGI sequels though.

I enjoyed the film, but it does feel like missed potential. It has a great opening and then it kinda forgets about it and sticks with a generic disney-faerie tale-storytelling. I never understood why Odette seems to have forgotten how she rejected Derek while she was kidnapped at Rothbar's; she couldn't have known that Derek was looking for her, it would have been more emotionally rewarding to see that all that time Odette didn't believe in Derek despite having mixed feelings for him, and then realised at the end that Derek was trying to save her.

As for "The Swan Princess" itself, I watched it recently and I thought it was mediocre. Almost everything went downhill after the 'What else is there?' moment. In fact, I actually got so bored that I had to take a break from the movie at times.
But on the bright side, I did enjoy Rogers, the opening and 'Oscar Bait' love songs, most of the animation, and especially the buildup between the two leads. Also, the last scene with the frog was pretty funny (for anybody that hasn't seen this movie, I won't spoil it) and I thought the design of Rothbart's monster form was cool.

probably the only good things i can say about this are:
    1) good animation
    2) some chuckle-worthy moments
    3) Roger being legitimately funny (the ONLY funny character in the entire cast)
    4) a strong opening
    5) "Far Longer than Forever"
that's..... really it. the movie took an okay concept and turned it into something that's so boring, it gets kinda hard to sit through it in its entirety. and you can only imagine the feeling of pure horror i get whenever i'm reminded of everything that came after this. so to anyone who's never watched the sequels before and are thinking of doing just that: *DON'T!* trust me, you DON'T wanna do it. spare your brain-cells and sanity!
P.S: i do remember having a picture-book of the movie when i was like 5, but that wasn't because i liked the movie. it was more because i loved picture-books at the time, and i'd most likely buy any of them (if i could).

I even dare to say they might be worst than the Land Before Time sequels, because as over saturated as those sequels are, at least they try to have decent animation, if anything else. The Swan Princess movies were never that great, so there was never a need for all these sequels. Especially when the quality of them drops so far from even the standards of the original!

what happen at the begining from Derek and Odett being at each other throats as kids and falling in love as adults was but screwing up the wedding and Odett getting captured by Rothbart and turning into a swan was all their parents fault from Queen Uberta to King William because they force to little kids to fall in love what the narrator said during Odette Christining that King William and Queen Uberta Would Come Up With The Same Idea Drek And Odett WOuld Be Brought Together For Each Summer Hoping They Would Fall In Love And That Their kingdome Would Unite With Peace And Harmony.
and what I found messed up about that is
1: That Is Alot Of Preasure To Put On Two Children.
2: Odette was just a baby and Derek was only six years old.
3 : You Cant Force People To Fall in Love Like That.
4: Parenting and Polictics are two diffrent things.
and 5: did the niave queeen and king even give their kids advice?
also William should have killed Rothbart because what was the noble stupid king thing you banish a eveil wizard for antemping to steel your kingdome and you think he just going to walk away and forget you.
and like Derek said What Else Is There.
    here more they could add.
    Who was Derek father?
    Who was Odette mother?
    and what happen to them?
also when the Christmas version came out i was shock because I was wondered why now after 17 or 20 years.

❤💖 To be honest, AniMat. I'm going to adapt my own animated musical Swan Lake film based on the original ballet. It is going to be way better and different than the Swan Princess film.
The story will be prominent much like the original ballet and new elements to the story and it will be beautifully 2d hand drawn animated film much like Disney films, Don Bluth films, Studio Ghibli films and DreamWorks hand drawn animated films. It will be a musical, I wanted the music and songs to be written by Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, Enchanted) and Paskel and Paul (La La Land & Greatest Showman) and composed by Alan Menken. I have dream casting choices such as Hailee Steinfeld as Odette because I truly love her as an actress and singer she could deliver an amazing performance. Other choices such as James Monroe Iglehart as the alligator, Albert Brooks as the turtle, Keegan Michael Key as the raccoon, Haven Paschall as the Carolina parakeet, Stephanie Sheh as the mink, Jim Cummings as the beaver, Kristen Chenoweth as the python etc. I always dreamed to have this film to be nominated and won an Oscar for Best Picture! 💖❤

This movie is loosely based on one of the most well known ballets of all time, Swan Lake, but there is absolutely no references to ballet at all. Now I'm not saying that They should have done something as extreme as write new lyrics over the classical score, like that one crappy version of the Nutcracker did, but at least most versions of the Nutcracker throw in SOME references to ballet like for example, in most versions the characters dance like ballerinas at least once. Why not do something similar to that with some of the Swan princesses musical numbers instead of playing them off as broadway numbers?
I don't know, it just seems to me like a big wasted opportunity to stand out from other musicals of the era but that's just me being a fan of classical music.

I watched these movies so much as a child. I don't care about behind the scenes shit and critics. I used to adore the songs with the princesses in gowns

On a side note, I just back from seeing ‘Onward’ (in Dolby Surround Sound, no less). I loved it! I’m not sure if I’d rank it as the “best” from Pixar, but I personally felt for it as much as a I did for ‘Coco’, and I highly recommend going out and giving it at least one watch!
