In deze video kunt u luisteren en kijken naar Gert's examen uitvoering van Grande Pièce Symphonique van César Franck op het majestueuze 'Müller' orgel van de St.-Bavokerk in Haarlem.
Dit orgelwerk speelde hij op 21 juni 2017 tijdens zijn eindexamen voor zijn 'Bachelor' diploma in muziek (orgel). De jury was zeer onder de indruk en kende hem een score toe van 8,5 punten (uit 10).
Aan het einde van de video ziet u livebeelden van de felicitaties die Gert in ontvangst mag nemen.

Wednesday 21st of June 2017, Gert performed his graduation exam on the majestic 'Müller' organ of the St. Bavo church in Haarlem (NL). This performance was the final exam for his 'Bachelor' degree in music (organ). The jury was very impressed and accredited him with a score of 8.5 points (out of 10).

This performance is incredible for so many reasons. He played this massive piece for an exam while being judged and yet still made it sound easy for starters. Also, he played a symphonic and romantic piece on a baroque organ with no swell pedal and yet it still sounded very authentic. Bravo Gert. You rally nailed this performance, which is beyond difficult when it comes to Franck!
Van harte gefeliciteerd Gert, wij wisten allang dat jij hoge ogen zou gooien maar je moet het ook maar effe waarmaken tijdens zo'n belangrijk examen. Omringd met de mensen die van je houden, die het allerbeste met je voorhebben en die je gestimuleerd hebben om jezelf naar grotere hoogte te ontwikkelen mag je trots zijn op je talent en verrichte arbeid. En wij mogen blij zijn dat je dit allemaal met ons wilt delen.

Franck's music uplifts the spirit. I see such classical masterpieces and Gert's wonderful playing as the vanguard of a counterrevolution against the atonal and pop crap that often passes as music these days. God bless the great Cesar and Gert!

I watched/listened to this again after watching/listening to a concert from Antwerp Cathedral recently uploaded on YT that featured this work. My impression of that interpretation was that it was very competently played but felt very stodgy and the registration made some of the notes an indistinct blur. In contrast Gert makes the organ sing and brings out the wonderful anthemic musicality of this composition - and this on a Baroque organ not designed for romantic organ music. Gert is very talented.
Gert - This is an magnificent performance. If this is an examination you have to pass or the professor was tone deaf. The tempo was perfect for the reverberation, registration very well suited to the composers concept and it was a performance with all the touched of a professional concert performance. Congratulations on a job so well done. You have come a long way in a short time and left a blazing trail of performances behind you. Well done. You could not have picked a more perfect piece to show your skill. This is the first symphony for organ ever written. As for your score - I think we who listen to your playing over the years could hardly have expected less. It should have been a 9.5

Thanks for verifying my impression that Gert wonderfully fitted the tempo to the venue. Until an organist friend of mine mentioned this point in general, I wouldn't have realized that had Gert blasted through it, it would have sounded like mush. Also, just found the Jussen brothers, They are also wonderful, but much prefer the organ.

Que l'on me permette d'ajouter quelques mots à ce beau concert de louanges, en adressant mes propres félicitations à notre cher Gert ! Bravo pour votre brillante réussite à votre examen de fin de premier cycle ! La note que vous avez obtenue (8,5) semble correspondre, si l'on raisonne par rapport aux mentions attribuées au Conservatoire national supérieur de Paris, à "bien", voire "bien à l'unanimité".
Nous sommes nombreux à vous suivre depuis neuf ans déjà, en 2008 ; nous vous avons vu progresser, tendre vers l'excellence, un niveau que vous avez atteint désormais... et nous avons une (toute petite) part à votre réussite, car nous vous avons soutenus et nous vous aimons...
La "Grande Pièce Symphonique" de César Franck, que vous ne nous aviez jamais donnée dans une vidéo et que vous avez dû travailler pour votre diplôme de "bachelor", est magnifiquement interprétée. L'andante du mouvement central (11'00" - 14'45") est une pure merveille, de musicalité et de fluidité : on se le repasserait en boucle des heures durant... Bien sûr, on peut regretter cette fois-ci de ne pas vous voir jouer, mais les circonstances l'exigeaient. Vous voilà désormais dans la cour des grands, reconnu comme tel par vos pairs. Nous vous attendons en France pour des concerts !
Dans ce même temple (De Grote of St. Bavokerk de Haarlem), un autre jeune organiste va se produire prochainement, en y donnant deux concerts, les 15 et 22 août 2017 : Nathan Laube, véritable génie de l'orgue, un Américain de 28 ans, qui est déjà une star et sera sans aucun doute l'un des plus grands organistes de ce siècle qui commence. L'avenir de l'orgue repose sur ces jeunes interprètes et improvisateurs, tels que lui, vous-même et bien d'autres (Thomas Ospital, Karol Mossakowski, Johannes Skoog...). Encore bravo à vous !

Pour compléter mon (trop long) message précédent, je tiens à remercier Gert de nous faire profiter également, sur son site Internet (www.gertvanhoef.nl), d'un (excellent) enregistrement audio de la deuxième sonate de Paul Hindemith, l'oeuvre pour orgue qu'il a dû interpréter d'abord (rubrique "nieuws"), ainsi que de nous faire entendre les commentaires des membres du jury lui décernant son diplôme. C'était par une belle et chaude journée, le 21 juin 2017, date du solstice d'été et début de la Fête de la musique (mise en place en 1982-1983 par un ministre de la Culture français, Jack Lang) - un jour idéal pour que Gert van Hoef donne le meilleur de lui-même, et plus encore...

Er zijn zo veel prachtige orgels, zoveel virtuose spelers, maar voor mij is Gert de meester. Wat een vakmanschap,wat een voetwerk,wat een veelzijdigheid. Gert, ik hoop nog jaren lang van jouw orgelspel te mogen genieten. Van harte proficiat met het behalen van je eindexamen ! Ik kijk al weer uit naar je volgende video !
I know. I commented before. but I am listening again. His pace is about that of other, far more experienced organists in the French Cathedrals (Where this piece came to light). The piece is, I believe, note perfect. The organ is NOT exactly suited for this music - being dutch Baroque rather than French Symphonic. But the boy got it right. It sounds wonderful. I heard 2 points where Gert could have paused a bit longer but... that is his decision. As far as registration, tempo, and technical proficiency - 8.5 is a bit lower I think. This boy is a late bloomer, having started at 14. His is an absolute natural talent augmented by excellent professors. At 10:19 or so through 11:00 - The breaks were PERFECT!!!. No. I think he deserved a higher score for this piece. Though I guess the overall score was 8.5. We have not heard the other pieces. Damn, Gert. Go, Man. You have done it once again. Of all the Young'uns, you have the most varied pieces you have mastered. You are really and truely ready for the concert circuit. OOO - There is unsteady wind in that thing. Right around 15:00.
Perhaps in the area of 16:00 you could have brightened the rolling notes a bit to make them a tad more distinct. Brilliant, Gert. Congratulations (Belated). What a wonderful experience to play that organ. . Go, Boy, you put Carpenter to shame. 21:40 Now comes the biggie...Hmmm. That running pedal was obscured. 22:59 - YES!!! the Pedal comes through. , the final Pedal run and the briliant trumpets. Perfect. just perfect all the way out. OMG!!!. What a performance

I am happy to hear you perform this work by Franck, possibly an underappreciated composer. Also thank you for including photos of this church and the historic instrument. How fortunate for us to be able to enjoy not only your playing, but also to appreciate the architecture of the space as well as the casework of the organ. Amazing! I have listened many times to this post.

But this was an exceptionally complex piece which proves his level of technical ability....26 minutes is a marathon and I am sure all his fans were glad to hear it.

I could only hope that Piet Kee, in his old age, could hear your performance on the organ over which he presided as civic organist for so many years. To be honest, Gert, I can't imagine where the missing one-and-a-half points went. Maybe the jury members thought your tempi were a little slow in places; but so was Piet Kee and so was Jeanne Demessieux. Warmest congratulations! Als docent Biologie wens ik jullie samen een mooie toekomst, met wel deze tips: Houdt je repertoire breed; laat je niet verleiden door allerlei aanvragen voor concerten; blijf studeren en ontwikkel je voor een goede basis als musicus breder; instrumentaal (piano) en denk ook eens aan koren. Waanzinnig veel (doorgaand) succes voor de toekomst en grote dank voor wat je al gaf!

Pittig hoor. 8,5 is ruim voldoenden en mag je je meten met de betere organisten.
Smaak blijft altijd een twistpunt, maar je speelt toch een breed soort muziek,
