Dune is such a goddamn terrific franchise. And the sand worms are the perfect, larger than life, poster child for it. Originally what drew me into the story…the idea of mile long leviathans that burrow under the ground, and cause the entire local region to shake with their presence.
Also the bigger the organism is, the bigger the internal body heat is (which is why the biggest animals live in the water) sandworms body temperature would be in the hundreds of degrees.
