Just downloaded BFD3 & am glad to have found this tutorial. Thanks, it's a great start. I too think it would be helpful to see more detailed videos on the Groove Editor, how to edit Grooves, and ultimately arrange them into a composition.
Ok, I've been through hell and back with BFD3, now, I'm back. This topic is complicated and BFD manual is not great. This video gives me waaaay more info than the manual. Sticking with BFD!
Great tutorial. Very impressed with the new BFD3. As a BFD2 user it looks & sounds like a huge leap forward from 2. The drums sound completely natural and all the extra articulations are superb. Cant wait to purchase mine!!!
Hi Folks! Bfd3 is a really massive tool, so thanx for your efforts to show us the most important things to work with it. I'm using a TD-20 which should fit good enough to get the most out of bfd3 using it as a Live-Drumset. But there is one thing that is very difficult for me to set up. The hihat mapping and articulation setup. I'm using a FD-8 as a footcontroller and a CY- 5 for example. Could you please show how to get the hihat work perfectly, even with getting a well working footsplash! Think this a very important feature for all E-Drummers performing with bfd3. Thank you! Yours Ilja
I just purchased one over a week ago. I'm new to these as I am not a techie. Is there a tutorial on how to use it in my DAW Reaper. How can Reaper recognize it? It is currently in standalone.
GREAT that Expansion initiated this. Crispy clear presentation. I use BFD3 as my main virtual drums it is FANTASTIC. The following are important clarifications for me, assuming I use it as a plug-in in pt 11 1. is it possible to play 2 grooves simultaneously? or a groove and a fill ? I am thinking of it as way to create variations? I typically build a simple basic groove etc. 2. I like the Midi grooves that play to the strength of BFD2 and BFD3 . that way I get a real player feel. one in particular that is really good is Steve Farone from Platinum Smaples the entire playing and structure of the library is really good. which ones do you see our there that yo can mention as good ones that reflect articulations of BFD3 ? thank you
Does this software have a standalone mode like EZ Drummer 2 and Superior Drummer 2? I own both of those programs but I'm looking for more drum sound options and I do NOT use a DAW. Thanks!
Man bfd3 is crazy detailed. However, its quite different from other drum softwares out there. I've tried addictive drums, superior slate n others n the interfaces in those softwares are very easy. But, I installed bfd3 yesterday with the manu katche signature snares pack n the pack loaded up in bfd fine n all however it took me hours just to figure out that i have to drag the drum pieces from the drums section to the kit section
You must select a drum kit before you choose a preset? In the tutorial I noticed that you began by choosing a preset, however you will not be able to work the program unless you choose a drum kit first
Hi, thanx for the tutorials,3 things 1) is it a logic pro x or BFD3 thing why when I select 16 mono out, I get 8 stereo and 8 mono instead? 2) how can i Import 3rd party grooves like Groove monkee into BFD3 3) can I suggest doing also some gospel and african groove packs for BFD3, would be great.....
i have a tascam dp 32sd and looking to buy a drum machine or software. can i use your software and transfer individual tracks without the need for a DAW or is the software just for computer use.
I just dowloaded the trial version, but when I try to open it, it ask for a program/application from the App store...? Also, can you tell me if there are lots of hi-hats that is preprogrammed (That I shall not tap on the keyboard my self), that I afterwards can add kicks and snare etc. too. Hi-hats in any rhythm incl. 12_8..?
Hi. I hope to have an answer, this vid is 5 years old so no one might look after it anymore... I am using BFD3 in Cakewalk Sonar by Bandlab. Somehow I am stuck with audio channel routing. Within BFD3, I got 2 mono out and 6 stereo out. But then, questions arise: in Cakewalk, still, all the audio come only out through the BFD instrument track. I had wanted the kick, the snare, the hi-hat, the cymbals, the toms, the percussion each in a separate channel / audio track, and I do not know how. I've tried so many things, checked a lot of videos, but none of them uses Cakewalk as a host. Is there a tutorial I didn't find yet? BFD 3 hosted by Cakewalk on a PC (Win 10) machine? Thankx.
Some of the presets I load take up 8 to 10 GB of memory. Are their settings that tell BFD3 how much to stream from disk and how much to load into memory like Kontakt has? I would like to see general memory and CPU management features covered in future tutorials. I would not wish to sacrifice features for less RAM and CPU, but just have it stream from SSD instead of memory. Do these settings exist? If so, show us where. This video is a great start and well overdue for a 2013 released product. I look forward to future installments.
I have BFD2 but won't play on MacBook with Catalina (10.15.7) using Logic Pro X, looking to upgrade to BFD3, have contacted fxpansion but haven't heard back for over a month, any short cuts anyone at fxpansion or subscribers can help me with?
I just got the BFD3 recently. After installing it and connected it to my Yamaha DTX700 , I went to file Load key map and chose my modem DTX700 , all worked except for the hit hat . Something is definitely not write about it , I had to call a mate that had to change the keymap on just the hihat and save it as . I would like to hear what FXpasion would have to say about this issue
I still don't quiet get it... If I made my own groove - Do I then have to upload it to hear it afterwards. I will have to make several sequences and combine them afterwards - How..? And also how do I then upload it to Logic..? I did not find that the tutorials is getting into this, but maybe I missed it. Hope someone can help
I'm new to this program. How do you export your finished drum parts into a DAW like Adobe Audition CC? I've only used Acoustica Beatcraft and it had an option to export it as a WAV file.
There are multiple ways. You can use the Export panel in the mixer to export different mixer channels. You can also export grooves as audio (right click on the grooves and "export audio" or go to the file menu). You can also export Drum Tracks if you're using them (again File menu).
Please help: I purchased the full box version of BFD3 long ago. I've noticed that certain obvious articulations like "hit" are missing from the crash and ride cymbals. On my key map they show up and do in fact sound when hit on the midi keyboard. However, in the groove editor box the articulation is grayed out. I tried bypassing this by simply recording a groove and hitting the respective note for "hit" as it appears on the key map. The crash "hit" sounds but it doesn't record as the articulation is grayed out in the groove editor. Any fix for this? PS I'm aware that some kits don't have certain articulations and this is not my issue. My issue is that the articulation is present and I can in fact hear it when hitting the midi note but I can't record nor manually pencil in the articulation as it is grayed out in the groove editor box.
Hi there... Can you tell me if I have the possibility og making my own track with for example taking the hi-hat and afterwards add the kick and snare where I want..? I would also like to know if there is sa pack with tambourines and shakers following the rhythm..? When I look a your homepage there is a pack for percussion, but it do not have samples of this. Kind regards, Karsten
I am a first time user and would like to know if I need previous editions (BFD1 and BFD2) before I can get started with BFD3..? On your homepage there is also a BFDeco - What is the difference..?
No problem. You do NOT need BFD1 or BFD2 to use BFD3. BFD Eco is a more compact version of BFD3, but it does not include the ability to edit grooves as you were asking in your first question. I hope that helps.
The quality of the drum sounds of BFD are great, however the interface itself is just awful. Just as an example, throughout the entire history of music editing/recording/playing programs, the space bar signals a track to play. Not BFD. Not that this alone makes the program unusable, it's that there are countless over sites like this.
Hey guys thanks for all the response and your time. Do you know what gear was used for the Distortion effects? There are some presets I love to use modern saturation, tape saturation and my favorite one by far, the vintage channel!. My question is about the vintage channel/tube preset. What was the gear used for this tube preset? I want to buy some additional plug ins and need to know what type of plug in I should be buying that is similar to the gear used for the vintage channel tube preset. The tube sounds amazing on the drums in bfd3 and is what makes the samples sound so good. Any info would help a lot. Thank you!
Its the built in distortion effect. There are 3 presets in this effect, modern, tape and vintage. I love the vintage channel preset in the built in distortion effect it sounds amazing. The tube effect is selected. Im wondering what tube gear or analog gear was used for this effect?
This VST constantly crashes Cubase, half the time when it does load it's glitched and the playback is completely garbled. The grooves are a complete waste for experienced midi writers who do not want pre-built grooves shoehorned into a VST. Yes, the samples sound great, the effects sound great... but the application is trash.
Shadow Image and here I am thinking I am the only one experiencing this cranked out issue. BFFd 3 killed my iMac computer. It friend the mother board. My main concern about BFd 3 is the sounds they gave us are so crappy and can't be used and I think it's because they want us to buy the expansion packs. I had eco and it was sounding way better sound wise and not I just use addictive drums. Con audio gives us 4 kicks only and they are way better sounding than the 8 of BFd 3 along with all the other elements. The snares in addictive drums are a killer compares to BFD3. That snares they say is a picolo is nothing close to a picolo.
M too facing crashing issues when i try to load the asio drivers n outputs in the standalone app. Thats why now m using it only inside my daw cause i can select the output with my daw n not the app. If i try to change the output or the audio preferences bfd3 instantly crashes. But apart from that, bfd is running fine inside my daw
Has anyone else had trouble saving grooves? I saved a groove that had ride cymbal velocities alternating between 61 and 50. When I re-loaded the groove the next day, some of the ride velocities were randomly at 100. I fixed the velocities to how I had them before, then tried saving the groove under a different name. That didn't work: when I re-loaded the groove, some of the ride velocities would still randomly be at 100. I tried restarting my computer after saving, and re-installed BFD3 with the most recent update. Those solutions didn't work either. When I examined some other grooves I'd previously saved, the velocities of some hi-hat notes also had this problem, where randomly some of the notes would be at 100. Any ideas on how to fix this? Maybe there is some setting I need to tweak that I don't know about.
What about cases when a v-drum allows you to have more than one zone, such as the rim that you can assign another sound to? Will this program allow that and where would one find such a field?
Thanks. In addition to the standard icons/views of the standard/default instruments (kick, snare, toms, etc) will the program also populate a view/icon of whatever instrument I load onto a zone? And will it have ability to go in and mix and adjust these instruments just as I would the standard/default instruments? Thanks again.
Yes absolutely. Flexibility is the key. If you can mix it when recording a real drum kit, then you can do it in BFD3. There is a demo on the FXpansion website. Why not give it a try?
how do i completely kill snare buzz out of the toms? setting bleed to off wont do it. I want all the room mics enabled just with no snare buzz. thank you!
+FXpansion Thanks man but thats not it, the resonance was already off. How come the toms have snare buzz sound in them thru the ambient mics? I hope they weren't recorded with it in there. Is there a fix or work around? its drivin me NUTS!
this is the first thing i tried doing months ago... i can get a lot of the noise/snare buzz if thats wat it even is it may not be it might just be ambient noise which is super annoying but if so i can get it down quite a bit by muting a lot of the ambient mics but you lose its sound/character so that defeats the purpose. I dont even have a snare loaded! so muting or decreasing snare levels is moot or any other kit piece for that matter! ONLY 1 tom loaded and it still has noise/snare buzz? in the tom sound thru the ambient mics when the tom is hit. I want just the tom sound with no ambient noise/buzz. GO try it for yourself. Load bfd3, load the gretsch mid tom and nothing else. Hit the tom and you'll hear noise/buzz in the tom sound. Only way to kill that i have seen is to kill the ambient mics but i want all of them enabled! with no buzz noise in the tom sound. I am losing tons of faith at this point that this isnt possible... of course this issue is simply solved with the direct mics by turning bleed off. There needs to be a bleed option for the ambient mics too, unless its not snare buzz im hearing thru the ambients in the tom sound, maybe its just ambient noise that cant be killed? I want a completely dry sound thru all the mics close and far.
Hey man, can you do a quick demo on muting snare bleed in all the ambient mics/amb mix? Ive tried everything and cant get all the snare bleed or buzz out of the ambient mics. The only thing i see that can be done is to mute most of these mics which defeats the whole purpose. Turning snare bleed off, the trims off and the send function off only seems to affect the close/direct mics. I need the snare buzz/bleed taken out of every mic. For instance if I load bfd3 up and load a gretsch mid tom, if i do a tom hit the snare bleeds into all the close and ambient mics. If i turn off kick and snare bleed and turn the trims down and the send it kills the buzz from the close mics when hitting the tom but not from the ambient channels. Is there a work around or function for turning off snare buzz in the ambient channels as well when the tom is hit? ps- the tom resonance is off too
i dont think so, i need full volume in all or any ambient mic/s with no snare buzz when a tomis hit. send level to a mic is like adjusting the level of that mic you want to send too or limit the send to. i need to kill all snare buzz from all mics plain and simple when i hit any other kit piece. its easy to do with direct/close mics by turning bleed off, but can it be done for ambient mics and how to if so? wen i hit a tom the tom sound and snare buzz come thru the ambient mics. i only want the tom sound coming thru ambient channels noy the buzz with it. its the same exact concept as with the snare bleed with direct mics. why isnt there a bleed/off option for ambients?
I'd love to see how it can play what logic drummer is playing using the logic x key map. I find creating grooves the hardest part of drum programs, and logic x drummer works best for me so far, but I would love to use bfd3 for everything else. So if I could use drummer to create the parts and then use bfd3 for its awesome features, sounds and mixing capabilities (and some edits), that would be sweet. Ps ..... I own bfd2
I would love that too.....to me, that's the hardest, and most timely part of using drum software....getting a good realistic groove nice and quick...mixing, switching kits, drums, sounds, etc is secondary to me.....it's how easy and fast I can get a smokin groove going..... .Logic X drummer does a decent job of that, but maybe BFD3 is even better
yes. hard to figure out who is actually recording real drummers with BFD3 considerations best is when the play on a V Drum to BFD3 that is when I get the best. midi grooves . I like when they organize in song part formats.
+FXpansion sweet, thanks for replying. I was just concerned because I haven't seen any video where someone is using the software within Ableton as a plug - in (VST). I'm planning to get it really, I love how it sounds (I'm using Battery 4 but I started to dislike it because setting up hi hat choke and other things are ridiculously complicated. So just to make sure. During the installation, I assume that I can have an option where to put VST files, correct?
its a virtual instrument- in this case a sampler, just as Kontakt is. so just like kontakt loads libraries so does this- in this instance however, BFD only loads drumkits,
I don't understand how you can sit there and ramble on little mixing adjustment capabilities for 5 min but do not even once mention what you would think is a main purpose of buying this software: how to write and create drum parts. waste of 15 minutes.
Probably because if you decide to watch on this video, you know what you are looking at. And if you don't have a clue, it means this video is not for you. If you have an overview video on the Oracle database, you don't need to explain what an Oracle database is and what a database is supposed to do. Because people don't happen to buy/use this kind of product just buy looking at the video. All products don't work like that because they are not meant to be used by the layman. Moreover, it's self explanatory: the guy jumps in by showing how to load a drum kit, ho to edit a drum kit and how to add a groove to a drum kit. Hard not to get what you are looking at, really. And last but not least: there is a direct link for more info about the product just below the video for those who want to know more, beyond (or prior to) the preview video. So, all in all, no one is left in the dark as long as there is enough good will. And those who are are really out of place. I get your point, somehow, but for people like me, videos that are overly long, re-inventing the wheel and small talking for 30% of the video are just boring me to death (it's a typical youtube disease). Especially when you know that, whatever they talk about is just common sense for anyone interested in the product to begin with. I don't say your comment is total nonsense. I just say that if, as you started to say, you don't understand, then here is the explanation. So if you didn't know what this piece of software was about, indeed, with or without the explanation or introduction, you just wasted 15 minutes alright
Hi how do i pan imported samples? I imported a mono sample, the pan funciton in the mixer view is not there for this sample. I also tried witha stereo sample its not possible to pan it...
Just installed BFD3, my new default drums emu now!!! Best of the best!
Bought this today and after having a little play I'm very impressed. 😎

Great video. Importing 3rd party drums. I have expansion packs for BFD2. I assume I can use them in BFD3?
Does BFD3 also contain the older kits from BFD2?
Quality tutorial - nicely explained, properly exampled, and generally interesting

What Groove pack is this video Funk Breaks from?
Oh I have BFD 1.5,2, and 3. Thanks and this is the best Drum program available! I love it!
Why is FXpansion’s bfd2 64bit update no longer available to download? Their download link just takes you to a blank white screen! Useless!

If those zones send out separate MIDI notes, then yes. You can set it up as you like it in the MIDI MAP panel.
The files is called ex. master01.bfdlac
My Mac do not recognise this format..?
how do i completely kill snare buzz out of the toms? setting bleed to off wont do it.
Is there a work around or function for turning off snare buzz in the ambient channels as well when the tom is hit?
ps- the tom resonance is off too
i dont think so, i need full volume in all or any ambient mic/s with no snare buzz when a tomis hit. send level to a mic is like adjusting the level of that mic you want to send too or limit the send to. i need to kill all snare buzz from all mics plain and simple when i hit any other kit piece. its easy to do with direct/close mics by turning bleed off, but can it be done for ambient mics and how to if so? wen i hit a tom the tom sound and snare buzz come thru the ambient mics. i only want the tom sound coming thru ambient channels noy the buzz with it. its the same exact concept as with the snare bleed with direct mics. why isnt there a bleed/off option for ambients?
how do i eq it out? what frequency to cut?
Now you get it! haha Well thanks for answering at least I know now. Hopefully there will be a bleed option too for ambients in bfd4
is there a key map for Nektar Panorama p4?
ok thx!
+Ian Hudson I purchased midi grooves . particularly Steve Farone of Platinum Samples is really good feels and sounds like a drummer.
Good suggestion....I have actually had the Steve Farone pack for a while and it's always my go to......
yes. hard to figure out who is actually recording real drummers with BFD3 considerations best is when the play on a V Drum to BFD3 that is when I get the best. midi grooves . I like when they organize in song part formats.
Oh, and this was a great video......sorry, shoulda started with that.
how do you undo a move can't find it any where
thanks
Little things like this seem to be entirely too complicated with BFG.
@@jessemeyer1157 Yip ,iv had it for years and never use the program most of the time I use logic drummer spend toooo long trying to learn it , thanks
Can anybody tell me if this could work with Ableton Live 9 as VST? I really need to know!
Thanks in advcance,
+FXpansion sweet, thanks for replying.
Fantastic, I'm downloading the demo today! Thank you so much really!
Pues las licencias de bfd3 no van bien y el servicio técnico para este problema no existe
Torn between superior drummer and bfd...talk me into it?
Drums Have you tried the demos?
i hope that it works without kontakt
its a virtual instrument- in this case a sampler, just as Kontakt is. so just like kontakt loads libraries so does this- in this instance however, BFD only loads drumkits,
미국 형님들 부탁드립니다 한글자막좀 넣어주세요.. korean cc plz ...
your support is the worst possible!
Hi there, BFD is no longer part of ROLI or Fxpansion. You can reach out to inMusic for more.
Интерфейс просто ужасный.. очень все по "комппьютерному".. нет вообще ощущения что работаешь с барабанами.. BFD 2 интереснее были на внешний вид..
Sounds great but the interface eye candy is a fail, too cartoony, sorry fxpansion.BFD2 looks far superior and sounds just as good.
Come on, 300 bucks?! No wonder why there's so much pirates out there. With that price I can buy a real set of drums.
I cant get a good snare drum sound with BFD 3
Hi how do i pan imported samples? I imported a mono sample, the pan funciton in the mixer view is not there for this sample. I also tried witha stereo sample its not possible to pan it...
