Slaughterhouse workers confess on camera | Nowhere to Run - World Vegan Day Short Documentary

  • In this short Surge documentary, released on #WorldVeganDay, we meet Doug, Susana and Carl, ex-slaughterhouse workers from the UK, Mexico and New Zealand. Each share their experiences working in the business of killing animals and shine a light on an industry that exists in the shadows of society.
In 1906, the author Upton Sinclair released his novel The Jungle. The book, which became an international bestseller, is a fictionalised account of Sinclair’s experiences interviewing slaughterhouse workers and researching the conditions that they were working in.
In the novel, Sinclair describes the workers becoming so desensitised to violence that the number of brawls, rapes and murder began to rise: “There is but scant account kept of cracked heads in back of the [stock] yards, for men who have to crack the heads of animals all day seem to get into the habit, and to practice on their friends, and even on their families, between times.”
The reality is, we expect people who spend every working day repetitively stabbing chickens, pigs, cows and lambs to hang up their bloody aprons at the end of the day and then just integrate back into normal society. Slaughtering animals is an inherently violent thing to do and the emotional burden of doing so day after day is not something that can shrugged off lightly.
A huge thank you to Doug, Susana and Carl for sharing their stories and to everyone who worked on this Surge Media production.

These are the stories that society doesn’t want to talk about and the jobs that we don’t want to acknowledge. Thank you to Doug, Susana and Carl for shining a light on an industry that operates in the shadows.
Please share this video with a non-vegan in your life so that these stories can be heard. Thank you so much for watching.

As a vegan I find it hard to empathize with slaughterhouse workers. But we must acknowledge that there are non-vegans who do not care about animals and the only way of possibly getting through to them is through their compassion for their fellow humans. Hopefully this will touch an otherwise untouchable human. 🤍

@@NoInjusticeLastsForever Many of these people are desperate for a job. Here in the US, I understand that most workers in these jobs are immigrants with very limited options for work. One of those in the video mentioned his ignorance that led him to think that eating animals was needed for humans to thrive. I was once that ignorant despite a college education. I went to school with a kid, a year younger than me, moved to Texas in the early 70s. The only job he could get was working in a slaughterhouse. He was a pretty good, stable kid, a lil' wanderlust in him. He did about 10 years working in the slaughterhouse then moved back to Ohio. I saw him in a bar in the early 80s. He was 'unhinged', thin, pale, a shadow of his former self. I bought him a beer and got him talking. A little catching up. He was withdrawn, had that thousand-yard stare. His job was to kill the cattle in the stall. He said after a while he could communicate with the cattle. They knew what was at hand. He could feel their fear. He said one day just the look in a doomed cow's eyes was enough to break him. Drank himself to death by the mid-80s. Didn't make it to 30 years old. R.I.P. Bobby Vance.

These farm animals were artificially made by us for their products and their meat, they aren't even natural. Few of them could even survive in the wild at all. Modern farm sheep wil literally smother to death under their own wool without constant human shearing. One of the only farm animals that could survive on its own is the pig, but it would be so invasive and destructive like its hog cousin that they would all have to be killed rather than released anyways.

Check out BiteSizeVegan and Joey Carbstrong talking about how some messed up slaughterhouse workers have become. Yes, this should be talked about more. Especially when some people say vegans don't care about people as much.
Plant Based News also has a video on people suffering from being forced to live near animal farms and them spraying poop. It's being forced to live near a open sewer. Poop was found on the neighbors' houses. Not everyone can just move away or have to.
Why is it more ok to make complaints on disruptive neighbors than animal farms or even other businesses?
Working in or living near slaughterhouses is also being forced to smell all that nauseating blood. Or injuries from big blades, hot water, or animals fighting back or the workers.

I dont, a vegan world doesnt make any sense, eggs doesnt hurt any animal whatsoever and same goes for milk production (not the mass production ones, the ones from small farms, same goes for egg production).
I get it, vegans get an incredibly moral superiority complex, thats why they have to tell everyone they are vegan even if the conversation has nothing to do with it, its just another trend snowflake people follow to feel special, like how people dont take mental issues seriously anymore, because now its a "fashion" thing to have anxiety or whatever self diagnosed issue.
Vegetarianism on the other side its much more balanced (more b12 from eggs and dairy) and has the same benefit to animals and before anyone tells me i dont love animals... i work as a veterinary in a rural area, half of city folks that go vegan wouldnt even know half of the things we have to treat.

Very important subject to discuss! My ex worked at a slaughterhouse many years ago and, yup, most of those guys _do_ abuse the animals. Numbing out to the suffering, dissociation from one's actions, nightmares, addiction, aggression...it's all there. Industrial meat isn't just cruel to the animals. Everyone is tormented. We shouldn't ask this duty of anyone just so we can tidy the horror out of our sight and pick up a clean, wrapped, innocuous looking piece of "food" that conceals the vicious nature of what these people had to do to put it on your table.

My father was an immigrant from Portugal working in slaughter houses in the UK and Republic of Ireland, did it for 10 years. Most of the work was during winter on turkey slaughterhouses, he also worked in pig slaughterhouses. The amount of cruelty involved to give the final blow to each animal was too much and he was never considered a "good" worker. Ended up working with the trolleys stacking things in the warehouse. Even today my father remembers this and regrets what he did, but he is not a bad person he did it to pay the bills since we were coming out of the 2007 crisis and he could not get any job in Portugal. Slaughterhouses exploits both human and non-human animals and are simply not a good place. If God created an Hell on Earth for (human and non-human) animals then that Hell must take the form of a Slaughterhouse.

There is a huge Slaughterhouse a mile from my house. Last year when our Washer broke I took my clothes to the laundromat, as I sat there a guy came in to do his washing, he was covered in dry blood and smelled terrible, he had the Plants name on his Hoodie. He spoke very little English and was not sure how to operate the laundromat machines. My first thought was to tell him to figure it out, but he looked so tired and beaten down I couldn't see him struggling, so I helped him out and we had a bit of a chat, he was here on a work permit and worked 6 days a week, 12 hour shifts. He said he hated his job. Although I'm 6 years vegan, to my eternal shame I've hauled meat out of that plant all over the USA. It's not just the animals that are the victims.

I think interviews like this are so helpful for people who aren't ready to watch Earthlings or one of the more graphic documentaries. Natural empathy for another human in the animal is a great stepping stone for empathy for the animals.

@@Fartboy226 nope. Was "vegan" at 18 ... then went back to dairy, & occasional fish. So I was a failed newbie vegan , turned psuedo lacto ovo vegetarian. I ate occasional fish up until 20 yrs ago. 🤢🤮🤮 Seafood & meat has parasites galore. So yeah, I actually stopped meat cold turkey at 18. Never touched another carcass again. So there you go.
I was oblivious to the horrors of the dairy industry where cows are treated like rubbish. I guess I jumped into the vegan "diet" , before awakening to the vegan "lifestyle". I hope that makes sense. I was initially more self-centered, until I became centered in self. It's all about respecting our animal friends. 🙏🏻😘

Very disturbing to hear about all this suffering, of the animals, and the humans. Glad you included a kiwi in there. Who even knows the full effect of slaughtering others on so many people's wider lives outside of these dreadful jobs, here in New Zealand and around the world.

Thank you for this video Ed. Incredibly powerful and devastating. I currently have tears streaming down my face, turning vegan was the best thing I ever did back in 2016. The death and pain us humans cause to other sentient beings is just beyond comprehension. What happened to love, empathy and compassion for eachother and for these animals. I feel such sadness that these workers had to endure the trauma of working in that industry, its great to see them speaking out for what is right, I hope it brings them all peace

Respect them for having courage to come forward, share their stories, and speak their truth. Wish more would do the same. I hope it inspires people to never get into that evil industry. It's exactly how it sounds, very dangerous environment. U.S averages 2 amputations per week. Not only that but exploitive, cruel, and psychologically damaging for the animals, and the employees that work there. May they find themselves on the path of healing.🙏

thank you Doug, Susana, and Carl for having the courage to share your experience and bring awareness. Over recent years there is also more widespread exposure about the mental burden that these workers endure and how they must adapt. As one of you said, we are told (from a young age) that this is all a necessary evil, it's instilled in us. from childhood we see the graphics of a laughing cow on a milk carton or a turkey dressed up like a pilgrim to promote some type of sentiment that all is well. we buy our children toys with farm animal sounds and yet there is that total disconnect always there: go pet the cow at the petting farm then go home to eat a steak or drink milk. I think it's also that there was some ridiculous assumption that they willingly go, as one of three said in the interview, and of course they do not. I think that younger generations today are able to voice these matters much more effectively, across the internet especially, which allows people everywhere to learn more about going plant based, also feeling less alone if surrounded by family/friends that just won't let go of the mentality regarding animal "products". All the content out there by so many different (and healthy) vegans is doing a world of good toward change.

Powerful powerful video. Being the sensitive and soft-natured person that I am, I wouldn't have the strength, courage, and grit to even survive in such a stressful and traumatic environment. Kudos to these workers for coming clean with their stories and opening up about their darkest chapters in their lives. I've been living a vegan lifestyle for over three years now and I don't think I'm gonna be stopping anytime soon. Animals' lives matter the most and I'll always eat plant-based even if some of the options are limited and sometimes priced exorbitantly compared to its meat and dairy counterparts.
