    The great thing about The Prestige is the ability to shift genres inside the movie itself from period drama to mystery thriller to steampunk scifi. Nolan is one of the GOAT directors indeed

    This is a film that not only demands a rewatch, but it's also so enjoyable because you pick up on so many things knowing the twist.
    - Borden saying that the Chinese magician "lives his act all the time".
    - Sarah's nephew saying "But what about his brother?" when the bird is killed but magically brought back?"
    - Borden magically appearing inside Sarah's home after he leaves her at the door.
    - When Danton can't figure out how Borden does The Transported Man trick, Cutter says "He uses a double" and he's right, but Danton dismisses that.
    - How Borden can love both Sarah and Olivia at the same time.
    - Borden's attitude at dinner after he saves Fallon's life. "I almost lost something that was precious to me." It was his brother - himself.
    - Sarah saying "I know what you are" before she kills herself. She realized that Borden is two people and she has been sleeping with both of them.

      @@TheHiobs No, Fallon is not a clone, he is literally a twin brother. The end of the movie says this.
      Borden says that TESLA is the key to his diary, not the key to his trick.

    • @thewackykid
      @thewackykid 3 месяца назад

      @@TheHiobsno tesla did not say they built the device for another magician.. it was angier who tells alley that they built one for another magician... alley did not acknowledge or deny that ever happened.. probably because they wanted his money so he didn't want to come clean and deny it...
      in other words borden never had a machine made by tesla hence there were no clones of borden.. he only has a twin brother... which is also why bordon and fallon could not figure out angier's trick because they did not know tesla could build a duplicating machine... moreover if tesla did made that machine before both himself and alley would not have been so confused why their machine "did not work"...

  • @XeonAlpha
    @XeonAlpha 4 месяца назад +18

    8:10 Nolan basically gives away the entire twist of the movie right here... "But where's his brother???" The kid recognized the bird was a double and the original was killed. It's a complete foreshadow to Robert's "trick" where he creates the duplicate and disposes of one of them. Terrifying side note: The duplication engine he uses in his trick is alarmingly similar to what the transporters in Star Trek would theoretically do.... create an exact copy of yourself and annihilate the original.

    Remember when Borden understood the old Chinese man's act? That he was living his whole life appearing to be a frail old man, when he was in fact very fit and strong?
    Angia thought that was ridiculous, Borden thought it was obvious...

    • @thhpofevryne
      @thhpofevryne 4 месяца назад +1

      It is funny when he says that and then you realise that it shows Angier also lived an act too and was pretending to be someone else. As it foreshadows Angier always being lord Caldlow as he says at the end, when Angier is talking about his stage name with his wife and says that he changed his name because he promised his family that he wouldn't embarrass them with his theatrical endevours. Even Borden didn't know, as he mentions Angier going back to his american homeland to see tesla, when he was in fact an English lord

    The whole movie is a magic trick! "You want to be fooled!" They tell you straight up, but that's the magic of entertainment, you go along with it!
    My friend and I went to see an early screening/ Q&A with Jonathan Nolan, so we knew nothing about it, except we were Jackman, Bale & Nolan fans! We had a great discussion in the car and wanted to see it again to see what we missed right away, but it didn't come out for another 2 weeks. Yes, we went and I bought the DVD when it came out and gave watched it many, many times! I always see something new. A brilliant and underated film!

    Nolan made this film between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and thus it's what really cemented Michael Caine as one of his regulars. He even has a brief voice-only cameo in Dunkirk as Tom Hardy's flight leader who's quickly shot down, in a reference to his role in the '60s film The Battle of Britain.

  • @Eidlones
    @Eidlones 4 месяца назад +5

    Just a bit of trivia, magicians didn't actuallty kill birds for that trick. A few did at some point, but the vast majority used the string to pull them back like Jackman did (outside of the fancy cage disappearing gizmo)
    One magician was accused of doing it, which is where the belief seems to have come from, but he eventually showed that he'd been using the same bird for the past decade.

  • @Rmlohner

    You've already seen The Illusionist, which had the terrible luck to come out directly opposite this film where it got crushed by Nolan's name power. A lot of people even called it a cheap copy, despite the two projects having been developed totally independently and their stories having basically nothing in common besides being about 19th century magicians. It's very nice that you were able to appreciate it outside that shadow.

    This video left out one of the (maybe "the") best lines of the movie - when Olivia delivers Borden's book to Danton and she says "This won't bring your wife back" and he says (without thinking) "I don't care about my wife, I care about how he does his trick." When I saw this in the theater I heard actual gasps from the audience.

    The first clue is Alfred not knowing what knot he tied. He didn't know because Fallon did it. And at the end, when the building is set on fire, all those water tanks are in there. Each one is a duplicate of Robert. That was where the tanks were taken every night. Which is one of the creepiest ideas once you think of it.

    I’ve seen this movie roughly six times, and I still discover something new with every viewing…the paradox of complexity with such a simple idea…the audience is basically Hugh Jackman’s character. We see all this complexity, but the answer is obvious - twins/doubles. This is still Christopher Nolan’s greatest movie, imho!

      No, Borden said that Tesla was only the key to deciphering his diary, not his trick. Tesla was a misdirect from Borden.
      Borden had a twin brother before he started doing The Transported Man trick, before he and Danton became enemies. There was a twin when he first met Sarah.

    • @MH90
      @MH90 4 месяца назад

      Obviously other comments have corrected this, but I do find it a fascinating unspoken thing about the film - Angier *absolutely* could have made just one copy and then have both a perfect double and stolen Borden's trick. But the man is all ego, and creating an elaborate murder device to kill dozens of himself was somehow the chosen route over living with another of himself.

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek 4 месяца назад +1

      @@MH90 I think Angier knew that having a clone of himself around after doing the trick once would be more trouble than it was worth. He would have to keep the clone a secret from everyone. Or have both of them share their life, like Borden and his twin were already doing. Easier to kill every clone as soon as it was created and not have to deal with that.
      Of course that brings up the problem that Angier says when he died - each time he used the machine he didn't know if "he" would be the man falling into the water, or the man who appeared as the prestige.

    Hey Sam,
    What will really blow your mind is when you realize that the tesla machine didn't do anything.
    They say at the beginning and end of the movie that you aren't going to realize the real trick because you want to be fooled. The whole movie is about magic tricks, and then we get fooled into believing there's a magical cloning machine.
    Root was dropped in the tank to frame Borden.
    He was right about Tesla just taking his money and pretending to make a magic machine.
    Then Tesla and his assistant just put a shit load of hats outside and pretended like it worked. They pulled a simple trick on Angiers, took his money and ran.
