This film needs to be seen multiple times. You will notice so much each time.
Nolan has yet.......to beat this film yet. Dark Knight, Interstellar and Dunkirk all take a back seat to this. It's so masterpiece. I have seen it 600 times.
This movie is a masterpiece no doubt ! but In my opinion there is no movie better than Interstellar 🤷

The Armageddon is very good and realistic but the forced emotion because of the score is just doofy to me. How is Murph the hero? Matthew went into space, docked a ship, went into a black hole, fought space Jason Bourne , communicated through a shelf of books. Huh? F that movie!

The moment Hugh Jackman's character said he no longer cared about his wife's death when it came to getting revenge, is the moment he becomes the antagonist of the movie.
Also, I still love that literally the whole movie is laid out to you in the Caged Bird trick at the beginning. Like the whole movie is just a magic trick on us.
Wrong. He says this as a mere coping mechanism. Just look at his face as he delivers this line, you can tell. Even if he's lying to himself more than anyone. Also proof, remember earlier on when he's trying to drown himself in a sink, after his wife dies? Once he's doing The Real Transported Man, he's drowning himself every time, literally & physically, every time he performs. For her, in his own sick way.

Yup, this is my fave Nolan movie. Christian Bale should have won an Oscar for this, he essentially played 3 characters! But really all the cast and crew were at their best. The twists make rewatching this movie a rewarding experience.
The thing you have to realize was the fact that Hugh Jackman had to commit suicide every night when he performed the trick. He knew that when he disappeared under the stage he would drown to death. His obsession led him to disregard himself. Literally dying each time the trick was performed. The clone would live on to do the trick the next night and the cycle continued...
By the same token, Christian Bale's character could only live half of a life. They switched off so each one had to play the part of Fallon when he was not being the magician. The dichotomy of the two different sacrifices being made is amazing. This is a masterpiece.
I love the way that you phrased this. Each man's obsession cost him something, and it isn't immediately obvious what that was. However, both of their experiences are true to what it costs people in real life if an obsession is pursued.
Oh sir Michael cain retired recently. At 90 . Legend. His career was incredible.

Fun Fact: The use of twins in a "transported man" magic show was, in fact, quite common when the movie takes place.
Time Traveling Fact: The editing includes one hundred forty-six time jump cuts, in which the next shot either flashes back or skips ahead to another time period of the storyline. This averages to almost one timeline jump per minute of the movie.
Casting Notes Fact: David Bowie initially declined the role of Nikola Tesla when it was offered to him. Christopher Nolan flew out to him personally to tell him that he was the only person he imagined for the role, and that his larger than life persona would make the idea of Tesla building a cloning device believable. Upon hearing this, David Bowie changed his mind and took the role.
Historical Fact: Chung Ling Soo (Chao Li Chi) was indeed a real historical magician. In fact, it was the stage name of William Ellsworth Robinson, a white man who disguised himself as a Chinese man to cash in on audiences' enthusiasm for the exotic. Robinson lived as Chung, never breaking character while in public. He died in March 1918, when a bullet-catch trick went wrong. "My God, I've been shot" were both his last words and the first English he had spoken on stage in nineteen years. Nikola Tesla was a world-renowned inventor, physicist, and engineer. For a while, he conducted electrical experiments at his lab in Colorado Springs, where he was also known for his eccentric behavior.
This is a GREAT film. So glad you decided to watch this. When someone says Christopher Nolan, THIS is the film I think of.
This is one of Christopher Nolan’s most underrated films. It’s amazing from beginning to end. It’s my fifth favorite Nolan film, right after The Dark Knight Trilogy and Dunkirk. I enjoy all of Nolan’s films, but this is one a lot of people don’t talk about much, I think because it’s between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The cast is amazing, I hope to see Christian Bale and Nolan work together again some day. It’s great to see you guys watch this film, I hope you both are having a great day. Take care!

The whole movie is a magic trick. It is brilliant! Still my fav Nolan film.
I always thought this was a very interesting movie. Kind of a slow burn though. Tesla created a teleporter/duplicator machine. And that twist. Great job Michelle and Natalie. Always entertaining. 5 hoots 🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉. Take care ladies

I’m an artist who’s studied literally thousands of human faces so I picked out Christian Bale’s face under Fallon’s thick beard and glasses pretty much right away:)

Wow that sucks! I used to do this and now I deliberately turn it off because there is so much more enjoyment in suspending your disbelief when watching a story unfold.
This was set in an era when science fiction was becoming science fact. If anyone would have created a cloning machine it would have been Tesla. I think it's more likely we'll create one of those in the future than a time machine - Nolan loves them!
And David Bowie line about separating "cost and money" was priceless. Probably the most important words of the last 50yrs. And I ain't even that old yet.
33:18 The Great Danton does the trick with HIMSELF falling into the water tank, and the clone finishes the trick. They just let the clone drown and cart him away at the end of the night...probably to bury him in an undisclosed place. And the clone becomes the Great Danton...after all, he IS a clone...basically the same person.

This movie also makes 'multiplicity' with Micheal Keaton accurate greatness. Even more than it originally was.
'The Illusionist' with Edward Norton , Jessica Biel , & Paul Giamatti is another great Magician movie , it also came out in 2006 .... The Prestige was really good and i just like that it's a good complex original story being told , also great acting by everyone .... I like how Nolan is not set it just one genre he seems to want to try out many different genres
Its possible there is no sci-fi - they're reading each others diaries, the sci-fi elements in Jackman's characters diary don't start till after he's decoded Bale's enough to realise the diary was written to fool him into going on a wild goose chase to America. Its possible Tesla was just stringing him along to fund his expensive research, as Bale planned. Jackman's whole new act then was designed to get Bale to kill a double (a normal non-sci one like Root) and get the death sentence.
That's why It's great to know to look deeper into the movie but with those diaries, it also brings up the unreliable narrator trope. Since they both wrote diaries to fool each other, is any of it true?
this movie definitely requires multiple viewing, you will get to see when is Fallon and when is Borden being shown just from the subtle acting differences from Bale.
This is my favorite Nolan film. I’ve seen it at least 8 times, and even now rewatching it through your reaction I’m finding new details lol. This movie gets better on every watch imo. So many movies aren’t watchable once you know the twist but that’s what makes this movie fun in the rewatch is to try and find all the clues
An opinion is an opinion but at the end when you said you won’t watch it again I was like “WHAT!!?? You have to watch it again, you missed SO much in your first viewing” lol

It really is one of Nolans best movies, but I would also recommend The Illusionist which was also released in the same year as The Prestige. It's very similar in concept to this one. Also, you should try out Insomnia from 2002 by Christopher Nolan.
worth watching again just to see the details you miss the 1st time. One thing to think about - other than that 1st duplicate that he killed with the gun - when he was doing the trick he was dying himself and the duplicate was the one that took the bow.
Michelle and Natalie! What they did isn't magic at all. How weird it may sound but cloning is as real as it gets. Not to mention portals etc. Tesla did found out that there is free electricity for everyone. Only problem with that is, if its free than you can't earn money with it. So the government took all of Tesla's plans back in the day and made it so you have to pay for it. People forget that movies isn't just movies.. There are truths hidden within movies and if you pay close attention to your surroundings and you'll see that things what used to be impossible are in in fact possible and are very real. So next time if you watch movies, old or new, remember that and look for the signs! Loved the reaction, keep it up:)

Tesla actually had a lab in Colorado and he was transferring electricity through the ground and air. He did that light bulb stuff for real.
The borden twins played by Bale has different personalities, one is more cunning, evil and obsessed, the other is more kind, nice and less obsessed! One loved Sarah and one loved Olivia! And than the Fallon guy Bale also played!

Nolan did a good job adapting Christopher Priest's novel. The book itself was a complete magic trick and the movie tries to do the same thing.

The Christian Bale characters were NOT twins. This is the reason that Borden (Bale) never tells his wife. One was a clone. The difference between Borden and Angiers was that Borden was not willing to kill his clone, so worked him into his 'act' as his assistant, and they took turns 'being' Borden.
Angiers however was more than willing to kill countless clones for his own benefit.
This difference between the two men shows in that Borden tries to save 'Angiers' under the stage, while Angiers was not only happy to let Borden die for his 'murder', but cruelly parades his daughter in front of him while he is in prison.
What I find neat is that it did go into the "science fiction" by showing that magic was really happening.
its his most coherent film i think. dark knight was a bit contrived in places, and the last half hour of it was a bit much. i'd say that this film is the only one where he doesnt 'bite off more than he can chew' so to speak. his film are usually so BOGGLING and messy
Great movie for a Nolan movie. You should watch The Illusionist that came out the same year with the same ideas. Fyi Tesla was played in this movie by the great singer David Bowie Rip

This movie does hold rewatch value. Its one of those movies I would always stop on when I came across it. Ive seen this one many times.
Good watch and nice reactions!... This is a multiple watch "need to notice certain things or themes" thing! I believe it will age well if looked in different ways, despite initial reactions... But still lots of fun to see both ladies watching until the final and always misjudging and being tricked... All the movie is actually one big magic trick to its audience about who's who, who is bad and good, or maybe none are if we consider all the obsession and tragedy in play... The Prestige is there!...
Brilliant complex structure, that unfolds in non-linear fashion, something that Nolan likes to do!... keeps the audience guessing and piecing together the story's various layers with themes of obsession, sacrifice, rivalry, and the nature of illusion, which leads us into discussion and interpretation. Also compells us into thought of what lengths individuals will go in pursuit of their goals, and the moral and ethical implications of their actions. Thats why all characters are morally ambiguous, blurring the lines between hero and villain, and challenging the audience to consider the consequences of their choices.
About the science... Actually its under the realm of theoretical science about what electricity and electromagnetic phenomena can and cant do, but here taken to the extrem of fiction since the specifics of the machine are of course fictional and its used to serve the narrative of the film!... Whe actually dont know if its duplicates or the same person pushed from alternate realities or coming from infinite paralel dimensions, or even a time machine that pull from a certain fixed or variable point in time...
In the end nothing of the above matters, its only "mote" for the written poem...
Its all about the illusion and deception orchestrated for appearance!... We can never forget that one bird always dies!
And thats true for everything, either its a phone, the Internet, a shoe, food or gas to fill up cars... We dont care and mostly focus in the end, on the prestige of what we understand to be the magic!... The "means to an end" no matter how good or bad and ambiguous things go, they always fall and are overshadowed by the values and the morality we think should be undertood!
This could even go into the realm of Psychiatric Sciences and the ambiguous nature of the human condition!... Its the "Jungian Shadow", the things a person has no wish to be, but can and could dominate the self under certain contexts or conditions, going against the "persona" which is what oneself as well as others think one is!... The "shadow" of everyone that is hidden, repressed and refers to parts that we feel are negative and we should not mirror for others to see!... Thats the Prestige! We forget everything with the"magic"...
About the sound... all Nolan movies are to be watched in theaters! Always! :) If at home, the playback equipment used to watch Nolan movies makes the difference!... Use Dolby Atmos high-resolution audio format. Its immersive and somewhat faithful reproduction of the film's audio, closer to the original vision of cinema theaters.
When you said you didn't like that you had to go to science fiction territory to explain the magic, well, I agree, but that objection would be explained if you knew that the actual writer of the book was a science fiction novelist, Christopher Priest.

It should be "Christopher Priest and Christopher Nolan's The Prestige". Priest wrote the novel, and which I went to because I read that wonderful novel, and, as usual when movies are made with novels (except Stephen King's), the writing of the novel vanished except a credit, even when a movie will get made that is very close to the novel (like The Prestige). Anyway, if you like the movie The Prestige and you haven't read the novel, read it too; and Priest's other books. Cheers.

This film is much better the second time as you can keep track of which Bale character is which and the timeline makes more sense. I appreciate that the movie uses the 3 act structure of a film and marries it with the 3 act structure of a magic trick.
The first time Jackman did the trick he killed himself and a clone was created. So every time after that. That first clone was killed himself and creating a new clone who would die after that one did the trick. All of this was to frame Bale for his murder.
No Natalie they were making clones, oh yea hahah 🤣🤣 amazing
Check the video that tesla was actually the assistant hiding in plane sight. As the whole movie is based. And I still can't quit beauty Natalie.

oh wow I love this movie, especially because my favorite actress Piper Perabo has a supporting role. What a great cast. I enjoyed seeing your first watch reaction. Being subscribed to this fantastic channel is just like "coming home". I always felt the Michael Caine character was so complex in this movie. I deeply appreciate the critique that this movie went full on science fiction in the 3rd act rather than a fantastic magic trick with a real world explanation

😎👍 I would say that Christopher Nolan's most easily digestible movie is "Interstellar" (2014), which also has Michael Caine in it. It deals with traveling through time and space, but in a very linear and easy to understand manner. 🥸 One of his most popular movies is "Inception" (2010), but to me, that one falls more under the category of films that one "appreciates" instead of "enjoys." 🥴 All the different alternative realities and mind bending special effects caused my head to explode. 🤯 You two are always fun to watch.
There is also a theory that Andy Serkis is actually Tesla in this movie.
Tenet is definitely his most confusing film, it took me 3 watches to fully appreciate it and I now believe it's another masterpiece from Nolan, it's just that so much is happening it's hard to keep up with every question you have about it and feel either dumb or that the movie is not explaining things at all, but it does, every question I had was answered but I needed time and the third time I kept pausing and rewinding to fully grasp it all.
Even so, the first time I watched it I loved it simply because of the music and the intensity of the performances, even tho I left very confused, much like a child watching Interstellar I guess, so while I understand people not loving it, I also think it's simply a hard to understand masterpiece
This one, Prestige, was probably one of the biggest reasons I became a cinephile, probably my most watched movie of all time besides the lord of the rings trilogy I guess since I have friends I watch the whole extender trilogy in a day, once a year

The part that always bothered me is that anyone who came to see the old magician they both worked for at the beginning, if they came to see his act twice, they would notice that he always chooses the same two guys out of the audience to bind Coyote Ugly's wrists and ankles. Dude could only do his show once in each location, and hope nobody ever watched his act twice. Travel wasn't as easy back then, and even now performers usually do at least a weekend of two or three shows a night in a particular location. I call shenanigans.
My favorite Nolan. I live to fulfill ambition. It has been the only thing to turn my cowardly self into a fighter, a manipulator, a height climber, etc. I can relate to these two characters.

Michelle, you were on target when you said we’re moving into Science Fiction. I saw this movie in the theater and frankly, I don’t really care for it. I couldn’t get on board with the Tesla duplicating machine and the idea that Jackman’s character duplicates himself them murders his duplicate is revolting. Especially when it’s just for a magic show. I realize that this film is really about obsession, but it just doesn’t work for me. Plus, since he’s duplicated, his duplicate knows what’s happening, yet he still goes on stage to commit suicide? Hmmm….. Just remember, NOTHING is as it seems.
This is BY FAR Nolan’s best. The fact that you don’t think so makes me think someone spoiled it for you.

This movie was totally boring. I hated the characters being so selfish and making such obvious mistakes. I never want to see this again.
