This is just the video I needed to see. I also have a 1996 Land Cruiser, and have just finished the wire harness. Today - the stereo - Pioneer AVH-X3800BHS - gets installed. Thanks!
Neatus, I'm doing a receiver and speaker upgrade finally. You will see my video post in a week or so. I'm going with the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS (which has come down in price recently) and Polk DB series speakers for the doors. Using DB521s in the front doors and DB401s in the back doors. Y'all bounce to my site to see that install if you need even more how-to on this subject. I watched Neatus' install to prime me for my install!! Thanks again Neatus!
You may be referring to the up and down switches to move the electric antenna on the FZJ80s. When you are offroading it helps to be able to lower the antenna to avoid trees knocking it off. This allow the radio to keep playing with the antenna down. May not get as good reception as you can imagine.
Clay I used Polk-Audio-DXi650 in the front with no cutting but I did have to ditch the factory grill cover and mount them on the outside of the door panel. It mounted nicely in the stock hole and the screws even lined up. It would look very stock if I were to paint the grill covers the same as the interior. I am away from home for work but when i get back in a week I will take a picture. If you want to mount these in the back I can't see a way around doing some cutting.
If you mount them on the outside of the interior door panel and add a little spacer (you can buy one at a stereo shop or make one) to push the speaker out about a 1/4 inch it will fit with no cutting. You may have to drill new mounting holes.
Ha, yeah, I usually keep my dorky side out of the videos but couldn't help it on that one. The model is the AVH-X1500DVD. I did not bypass the amp. It sounds so much better than what I had in it I have not even really thought about it since the install. I have aftermarket speakers installed as well.
@mrkev0188, check on Crutch-field (remove the dash) for the right fit and to browse all kinds of stuff for car stereo and speakers. Then, note the model and google to see if the price can be beat. I will say that Crutch-field may be a little higher on price, but they make it up in support if you need help. Very helpful folks. Clay
No problem brother. We were all new to this at one time. The standard in stereo sizes are single or double din. Your rig can accept either one. Go to Crutchfield. dot com and get an account. Then input your vehicle and you will have all the help you need there. Their customer support people can help you out and they will not sell you something that won't fit. They also include all adapters and plugs in the price.
I'm going to do the same upgrade soon and I'm going through all the different head units that will fit, I like the look of your pioneer. Do you mind sharing what speakers you used if you remember. Lot's of folks saying that the depth in the door can be a limiter unless you cut, which I didn't wan to do if possible. Thanks in advance, Clay
I got held up on this install with other "Honey-dos", but I should get on it soon. I'm going to try a repair on the drivers side passenger door lock mechanism while I do that door speaker. It only works about half the time. Did you have to cut metal to get the 650i speakers to fit? I know bigger would sound better, I was just afraid to cut too much as it is wetter on the east coast (where we currently live) than back in TX or AZ.
What was the part number for the kit. The only thing I'm getting at crutchfield is for 87 and up Toyota. The small plug is supposed to be 5 wire and the kit is only 4
Hey, what about maintaining the antenna up/down button? I have heard you need to avoid connecting a light blue wire in order to maintain the use of that switch. Can you tell us what you did in that regard? Thanks, great video.
Hey nice video! I am a little confused though. I'd really appreciate if you clarify. You removed one plug from the original head unit and there are two more laying around, my question is all three plugs are out of stock Landcruicer 80 series wiring but only one was plugged in to the original head unit, and now with the after market one are we going to utalize all of them? And secondly what about speaker wiring? How many speakers does your head unit support? 80 series came with total of at least 8 speakers plus 1 subwoofer ( 2 in the dash, 1 in each door and 2 for the third row plus 1 sub in the back). Have you connected all of them? A little clarification and advise would be highly appreciated, oh and lastly what about the original amplifier? Did you bypass your stock amplifier? If yes which wire/plug did you not use or used instead. Thanks
If I remember correctly those extra connectors are for the LX450 with factory amp. Your 8 speakers I think are running on four channels. Just hook the four channels up to run all the speakers. I no longer have my 80 so I can't verify this but I think I am correct.
For some reason my cassette auxiliary wont go all the way in when i push it in, it just feels like something is blocking it. It wont drop down, so i dont know what to do with that. Any help? Thanks!
The harness that crutchfield shows only has a single white connector (Metra 70-8112) and then some RCA connectors....they said this was the correct connector, but it looks like your package had two...can you tell me where you got your harness from and what model it is? Thanks
Mason B My harness came from Crutchfield. I am unsure of the model number. It is what came shipped with my stereo from Crutchfield. Call them and show them and tell em to watch my video.
They won't watch videos (I asked). I hooked everything up and the radio turned on for about 1 second and I heard the antenna motor cycle then everything stopped and the radio went black. I checked the radio, cigarette, clock fuse and it's fine. The clock and cig still work. I tried plugging back in my stock radio and it doesn't work either now. Did you have to do anything with you factory amplifier? Does the antenna or amp have another fuse located somewhere? Can you think of what may be going on? Thanks for your help.
hey im really knew into this kind of stuff, this might sound like a dumb question but how do i look for a replacement radio for my 96 cruiser? do i need to look for a specific size so it enters the dash just right?
The crazy side of you came out in the end there... haha. Good video. What was the model of the Pioneer unit? And, did you have to bypass the stock amp in the kick panel you mentioned? Thanks, Clay
My stereo had the mounting brackets removed... the idiot I paid to install my stereo removed them so it destroyed my brand new $500 radio when I went off road... Would you happen to have the measurements so I can make a new set :/
Have you got a video on how to change or fit the clock in the dash? I have a 1992 DX HZJ80 and it has no clock and I purchased a 2nd hand clock and want to fit it where the blanking plate goes. I cannot find any video's online showing me how to get the dash off to get into that spot.. can you help at all? I am in Melbourne Australia.
Did you have to hook anything up to your e-brake (red wire-white stripe)? I'm blowing my dome light fuse on my 96 FZJ80. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I also didn't get any master sheet or wiring diagram from crutchfiled either. They are being very little help in regards to me and my land cruiser. Thanks
I have a lx450 and it has a cartridge type cd player under the center console . When your doing the wiring does it allow the cd player to be used in the new radio? you didn't connect the connection that was going to the old radio . was the old connection going to the old radio go to the amp and the two gray ones don't ? How do you know if your connecting to the amp or not ?
I am not sure about the cd player. There are extra connections behind the dash. If you specify to Crutchfield that you have the disc changer they should give you the tight connections. My sub is removed along with the amp. all other speakers to include dash speakers work.
When you use the gray connection like you did you are bypassing the factory amp . You have to disconnect the factory amps power once you do this .watch this video he show how to disconnect the gray connections that are going into the amp. ruclips.net/video/oYTVmnKtTnU/видео.html if you don't you will get a bunch of interference and a popping noise in the speakers when you turn the car off .

+RiFF RaFF (USA Infidel Warrior) Any updates? How does the new stereo sound?

That should sound good Clay. I have Polk DB650i and it is so crisp and clear. I look forward to the video.

Clay thanks for Answering that comment. I had meant to answer it the day it was made and forgot.

bicycleagent003 Not sure, I did not have to do anything with the antenna. Still works for me.
Loved the ending lolol
I'm here to entertain! Thanks for watching!
My '94 land cruiser doesn't have the top drawer that you pulled out. Is there any other way to get to those screws?
Hey nice video!

No Prob. Mine is a 1996 as well. I have some videos where I'm fixing some things on mine at my channel as well.
hey im really knew into this kind of stuff, this might sound like a dumb question but how do i look for a replacement radio for my 96 cruiser? do i need to look for a specific size so it enters the dash just right?
Can you scan the brackets?? I lost when I was robbed. if you can scan, maybe I can do it again. Thanks
Do you have the old one laying around? I'd be interested.

No I don't. Sorry but good luck. I'm sure it isn't to hard.
Will the factory alarm work with replace / upgrade aftermarket stereo? Is there anything I'll need to know to keep the alarm alive? Great video, thx!
rtoob the stereo really does nothing to the alarm. Mine still works.
What Pioneer is that?
These will fit in the rear and look completely stock RetroSound R-525N
Did you have to hook anything up to your e-brake (red wire-white stripe)?

Thanks
I didn't hook that up.
I can't remember if I had one but if I remember correctly they all matched up to the diagram in the Pioneer instructions.

steve dental sorry but I don't know the answer to that question.
Maybe someone will know
does you tweeter in the dash and sub woofer work with the new radio .

I think I listed the wrong model there.
