Couple of tips for other viewers and yourself, if you start the engine, turn the wheel upside down and it will give some extra room, its actually not vertically symmetrical. The other note, the wiring harness connectors have a hole they clip into in the dash, so theyre held in just the right spot so when you reinstall the cluster, all you have to do is push it back into place and do up the screws, the harness will pull in with just the screws, no need to reach behind the cluster and try to install each plug. That way youll save yourself from all those cuts on your hands too.
Hey bud, just wanted to say stumbling upon your videos is like finding a gold mine. I just bought an LX470 and these small problems can be tough to find good info on. Thanks for all the hard work.
Just replaced my "P" and "D" lights today! This video was super helpful. My "VSC TRAC" and "VSC OFF" dash lights were on and went away when replacing the "P" blub.
This is a very helpful video. We have an 80 series with the same instrument cluster and of course the "D" light is out after decades of use. Last year I bought a replacement light but forgot about it because if only one light is out you still know what gear you have selected. When there is no light you are in "D". After watching this video I am going to change it. There were a lot of good recommendations in this video and tips/information that you would prefer not to discover yourself. One bad idea I had while watching this video is that you could be cheap and take the light from the "2" position and move it to "D".
Great video sir! I just bought a 100 series Lexus lx 470 and the only thing that doesn’t work is the D indicator. This rigs got 280,000 miles garage kept and runs like a damn dream so Im thankful for this video
Mine hasn't had drive indicator but I've grown to enjoy it at night with less lights on the dash haha. Might get around to changing mine soon though, awesome video!
A lot of people like less light in the dash for those long night drives, including myself. But actually, if you use the factory bulb, it’s not annoying or too bright at all.
Mine been put for a while now. And I liked it this way, less glare during night drives. Well till now! Since I've watched your video, my OCD is kicking in and I guess I will fix it in near future. Damn you Chow😅😄🤣
Awesome Video, less than 1hr start to finish thanks to your video and probably loads of $$$ saved, hate to think what a dealer would charge for doing it. I also taped a sheet of A4 over the steering wheel binnacle/cover and masking taped the front edge of the dash to stop them getting scratched, thanks so much
Good job, clarification needed. I realized those two connectorized harnesses behind the cluster are supposed to be re-seated into the plastic molding. You snap the left and right ones back in to the plastic molding and then the cluster, when you slide it back into place self-seats, you turn the screws to secure and see various lights come on. No reason to put your hands behind the cluster, just slip it in. The Japanese and German have great engineering. The re-install was easier. Good job, check to see if I am correct.
In the pic where you are holding the plug with harness. Directly behind the plug, in the plastic molded dash frame, is a key way that will allow the multi-pin plug to "snap" back in to the frame. That is the key way the plug came out of upon removal. Do that for both, and when plug assemblies. Then when you slide the cluster back in it will self-seat into the plug. Your hands are not required behind the cluster. Tighten the screws as you recommend
Another great video. Did the shocks on my 100 series today. Didn't seem as bad as I read about though there were some struggles. I was even able to get a milwaukee 3/8" power rachet on one of the top bolts made it a little easier.
Thank you for this video! After many years I finally fixed the D light on my 99 LC. I ordered the bulb from Toyota and it was noticeably dimmer than the other bulbs. Anyway, thank you for your excellent videos!
The white plastic kid the harness snaps into 2 spots in the tan/grey plastic to hold it. You do not need to fish your hand back there and try to line them up to screw it down. They will hold themselves once clipped in and you just place the dash back in place, and tighten the screws.
Great video, I had a hard time connecting the gauges back together cause the screw/ bolt that connects to the harness and cluster wasn't grabbing properly. When tightening it would grab and it felt like it was stripping, I had to angle it to have all the gauges to work again and wasn't able to tighten fully because it would loosen if overtightened. I also didn't have the bulb ready so I just swapped the 1to the Drive. I probably wont try it again since the D is light up now.
Great videos, just did mine using it. When you reinstall the cluster though you don't need to plug the harness in first. the back of the plugs locate into the matching holes in the dash and then when you slide in the cluster it all lines up and you just tighten the screws. A lot easier if you have big hands!
My 2001 LX has circuit board over "D" light, not like the Land Cruiser. Took screws out of circuit board but did not loosen up. Rather than risk breaking something I buttoned back up. FYI the LX is different and not as easy fix as Land cruiser
Yor video helps a lot in my work on my 2002 lexus lx 470. I fixt my D light but som smalll diffrences on lexus ar on back side is green board full size so needs to be removed and some wires disconected and i found easy way to conect those 2 big white conectors on back side in corners. On end push clusters in whit hand ans titen Philips to cklic
I plan to do this, but with an equivalent LED bulb. I replaced the entire cluster of bulbs in my 97 R-Runner with LED. I will do the same with the 99 LX.
LOVED THIS VIDEO! You are now my favorite channel for my LX470. I also have issue with the 'back light' on the instrument panel. All the needles light up and the dimmer function works, just not the illumination for the entire panel to see the numbers, etc. Any suggestions??
A cool video would be helping me diagnose and fix my rough starting problem. I’m in SoCal too. My engine doesn’t turn over on first try. Always takes two
Update: The LED bulbs in the Amazon description DO NOT fit onto the plastic circle backings NOR DO the bulbs fit into the housing between the board and the instrument panel Park/Reverse/Neutral/Drive/2/L. The LED bulbs are too wide, too long, and the prongs are too far apart. Also, the LED bulb prongs are incapable of bending around the plastic circle backings. Lastly, the polarity of these bulbs matter! I do not recommend this project if you have a 2002 LX 470--or any other vehicle that isn't chowcares exact model. Since I had to physically unravel the wires of one of the original bulbs from the plastic circle backing in order to attempt to use the LED bulb, I now have to order a new bulb... and I cannot drive until it arrives!
hello, i am tackling this project today in october 2023. i ordered the bulb in the link and it has arrived. WILL IT WORK in my 2002 LX470? (In other words, has the link been updated and do I have the right bulb?)
Really helpful video man, thanks for the video. I think it will be more helpful if there is how to open center console, because my seat heater and my center transmision light are off. Thanks 👍
Thank you for sharing! This was an awesome video. Quick question, have you ever changed the “Yaw Sensor” on your 100 series? Would you have a vid on that?
THANK YOU for this tutorial video! I have an 02 LX that just broke 100k. The drive light went out just like this. Is your link to the replacement bulbs still good? Are the Landcruiser bulbs the ones I need? Thanks for your help!
VIEWERS BEWARE: If you have a 2002 LX470, the back of the cluster DOES NOT look like this. There are two layers of green electronic boards and the bulbs are on the bottom layer board. To get to the bulbs, wire harnesses on the top boards need to be carefully disconnected and the top green board removed. @chowcares What year is your truck, and is it LX470 or 100 series Land Cruiser?
Did you take the board off? I have a 2001 LX and removed screws on board but it was stuck/glued....and did not want to risk damaging something so just buttoned up and left burned out bulb. Please let me know if/how you took care of replacing bulb. Thanks
I have the same issue. I've removed all the screws and the second circuit board layer is now loose, I just can't figure out how to disconnect the ribbon cables. It looks like the last owner tried and failed too. What a horrible design.
Lol the “d mod”? It’s not as bright as everyone says it is, not even close to annoying. Is it worth the effort to fix? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ depends if you like your stuff to work as it should

It doesn’t apply to your cluster as it’s in good condition , but mine has some dust inside and on the inside of the plastic front panel … would have been interesting when you were doing this to show how to clean inside the cluster ..
Take a like at the shifter mech on top of the transmission. It’s gonna be difficult to get to but there’s a sensor there basically telling the computer what gear you’re in. I suspect yours might be loose or faulty
@@chowcares thanks for responding, I will mention this to the next mechanic I take it to. I would bring it to a Lexus dealership, but I know they will upcharge the price/work...and I already have 270,000 miles on it. So not sure if I should be investing thousands more. I am first and only owner. No issues up until now.
Wasn't this a mod to make it NOT work since it was too bright? Mines out but I really don't care since the truck still works perfectly fine without 1 led working.
Hey Chow! How about this !!? How do I get my VSC TRAC AND VSC OFF TO RESET!!! My power brake booster assembly was all replaced, it was about a $2000 fix however they could not reset these two lights on my dash! If you can help out in anyway, it would be appreciated
Ooo Mu lc is too old to have vsc and traction control. But I do remember having to reset it in my 04 es300. Something to do with a paper clip and the obd2 port. Let me look into it and see if I can recreate the lights
@@stevesegovia4474 I see a gremlin lurking here. I'd like to alert folks that the dash is not something to mess around with. Read the FSM and learn how vital the dash is to the computer. 98-99 models without electronic traction control wont have the issues i'm about to describe (98-99 keep your rear locker cleaned and lubed and spin it a little monthly). Toyota really messed with the reliability of 2000 - 2007 100 series by routing a lot through the cluster. Mine is a 99, I know the LXs have an extra circuit board that needs to be removed before you get access to the bulbs, but your 06 should be similar. Just double check the bulbs as the later models might be different.
Also, looking for a diagnostic challenge?? Let me know I can bring my cruiser over, my aftermarket radio turns off like no power turn off when I take my truck out of park. 🧐🧐🧐🧐
Any recommendations on what programmer to use to recalibrate the speedometer? I was looking at getting the Hypertech but it doesn't look like it supports the 2001 Toyota Landcruiser. I put on bigger tires on my LC and the speedometer is not reading correctly. Thanks!
The cluster is not the same and the linked bulbs are not correct for all 100 series! You should really add a disclaimer to this video with your year model. I just wasted $15 and 4 days getting the wrong bulbs.

That’s really weird. I wonder what power source it’s wired to
Any recommendations on what programmer to use to recalibrate the speedometer? I was looking at getting the Hypertech but it doesn't look like it supports the 2001 Toyota Landcruiser. I put on bigger tires on my LC and the speedometer is not reading correctly. Thanks!
I use a Yellow Box. Can get it plug and play
The cluster is not the same and the linked bulbs are not correct for all 100 series! You should really add a disclaimer to this video with your year model. I just wasted $15 and 4 days getting the wrong bulbs.
