Chretien ran surpluses from 1997 till he left office in 2003. During Chretien's leadership, Canadian government was on track to reduce the national debt from 63.8% of GDP in 1997 to 41% in 2003, and in 2008, the federal debt of Canada as percentage of GDP was 30%. That's why he made Canada stay out of the cluster fuck of a disaster that was the Iraq War and probably saved thousands of Canadians. While Harper accused Chretien of supporting Saddam Hussein. With that one decision it showed that Chretien was a good leader that protected Canadians. If you don't realize that him making staying out of Iraq was a good decision there is something wrong with you.

Always liked and respected Jean, friendly and kind to a fault unless you pushed him to far, just ask the protester he throttled about that. lol

I remember him saying he was going to decriminalize marijuana ... the crowd gasped .. and his response was "hey, dont start smoking right away"... (-_-) lol ... now that it has actually been legalized in Toronto ... I see him as a political pioneer .... down to earth guy who valued his wife's opinion over his own career .... in my mind he was the last real prime minister Canada ever had ... everyone after him was/is substitute teachers

Jean Chretien is my hero, ahead of Rick Mercer. Although I am sad that Rick is leaving the show after 15 amazing seasons. It's like Chretien retiring all over again. :(
