    Canada was never part of the USA. During the civil war the British loyalists fled northwards, to Canada (mostly Upper Canada) while the French held lower Canada. Canada was only ever part of the English and French Empires, and the French lost Lower Canada so it all became British. The USA did try to take over but lost the war of 1812 against The British (with minor aid from Canadian Militias, much more aid came from Indians but for their good work we stuck them in 3rd world reserves. Go Canada!)

      THAT is correct.
      In fact, "constitutionally" the Brits can depose the monarch & become a full Republic ..

      Viennery No, the Commonwealth is a separate concept. Republics can be in the commonwealth.
      ***** Explained well, Elizabeth II is the Queen of Canada and the Queen of England, but the Queen of England is not Canada's queen, make sense?
      Think about it this way, I could be the CEO two companies, Canada Corp and England Corp. Being simultaneously the CEO of two companies does not mean England Corp owns Canada Corp any more than Canada Corp owns England Corp. Even though the CEO of both companies is the same physical person.

    • @xazlx

      If my dad is the Police Chief and the Fire chief, and someone asks me who is the Fire chief, and I reply the Police Chief, is that wrong? As the Queen of England and the Queen of Canada are by tradition and likely by law currently one and the same person, isn’t the current Queen of England whether or not England becomes a full republic sometime in the future also the Queen of Canada? If so wouldn’t either designation as well as the Queen of whatever else she may be queen of, be a valid designation? Once England becomes a full republic that designation would no longer hold true as when my dad retires as the Police chief.

      YES, SHE HOLDS THE TITLE ,,, BUT IT IS A CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY , ONLY !!! Canada is a Sovereign Nation .. Makes her own decisions etc. As all Commonwealth Nations do ...Canada ,only pays homage constitutionaly , lip service to the Crown ,, but Canada , also belongs , to the British Commonwealth of Nations .. Which includes many Nations World -wide .. Its a strong Commonwealth .. And in a 150 years the Bonds between these Nations has never been broken .... Canada has many Bonds with other Nations across the World that do not belong to the Commonwealth .. Holland , Belgium , who the Canadians Liberated , at great losses & to this very day those Countries Honour Canada & the thousands of Canadians that gave their lives for them & remain & lie buried in their grounds .. So let's not get too carried away here :))) Canada has Served the World well .. And never asked a thing back !!! Basically in the 60's & 70's we were for years , Peace Keepers , UNTIL we threw our lot in with the U.SA. We have always been there for them , in their Crisis's etc. ..UNTIL changes were made , but ,,one sometimes has to give their head a shake at what our neighbours are doing .. We Will & WILL Continue to remain Loyal as Friends , but , oh !! One does not want to get shafted , as it is unfortunatley being Economically done to us ... Fair Trade ??? Well , Fair Trade or the Word "Fair" , means , Every One Should get a piece of the Sausage , not JUST The Who One Cry & Whimper , OR BULLY !! if they don't get 85 % of it .. Give & Take , SHOULD BE THE NAME OF THE GAME !! A real Deal-maker or Negotiator should know how to make it work !! So all walk away satisfied !!

    Thank you for your rendition of our political system; you make it sound so ridiculous, which it is. Has anyone ever sat back and looked into the amount of money it takes to keep this morinic Democracy system ticking; I,ll bet you it's in the billions of dollars. No wonder we have such a deficit. If we were to take in all of our elections, the cost of MP's, MLA's, Civic leaders, government services, excluding law enforcement and other essential services, but embracing foreign councels - our country would be pretty well off. Proroguing government has been used too often and is not subject to holding our politicians to account, but if they were not being paid for the same period it would be a hard lesson for them to learn and tey would use it more wisely and wouldn't be as flippant about it.

      Do you have any idea what a huge pain in the ass that would be? • @GuruJudge21
      @GuruJudge21 6 лет назад

      Gabe wasn't insulting immigrants, Jay. He was saying that he took issue that new Canadian citizens had to swear an oath to the Queen.
      What else is the government doing? Going on vacation and lying? It wouldn't be that hard to change and we're going to have to do it all again anyway when Elizabeth dies and her son takes the crown and we have to change all the "Queen" and "Her Majesty" to "King" and "His Majesty".

    • @agilemind6241
      @agilemind6241 6 лет назад +1

      No because people weren't that stupid when they wrote the constitution etc.. all the reference to the monarch use both genders already. And yes it would be that hard to change because it requires changing the constitution which requires unanimous consent of the provinces some of which have laws requiring referendums for their approval of significant changes to the constitution - and that is before you get into the whole "Quebec never approved the current constitution" debacle and have to deal with all those extra negotiations (see Meech Lake Accord and Charlottetown Accords to see how well that has gone in the past).
      There is still an on going court case challenging Harper's change to the rules of succession of the Monarchy to treat male and female heirs equally - and that is a change that has broad approval among Canadians. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-court-appeal-royal-succession-law-1.4541398

    • @GuruJudge21
      @GuruJudge21 6 лет назад

      It does not. It says 'Queen' throughout the whole thing. I even believed you at first, but I looked it up on the Government's site and then I looked up the physical document. It says Queen throughout the whole thing from 1867 to 1982. Maybe I'm ignorant, and every document I've seen is filling in a blank where it says [Insert Gender Appropriate Monarchial Title] or it says 'Queen'. So, unless Canada wants to be officially ruled by Charle's wife, we're going to have to change it.
      Yes, there would be a political debacle. The Canadian Government is seemingly incapable of doing anything simply. What I am saying is it that it wouldn't be actually difficult to do, just annoying to get started.
      Or maybe it would be harder, considering the BNA Act is apparently still in Britain.
      Obviously, the rights of succession should be cognatic, it'd only be sexist not to. That's something that really doesn't matter since the direct heirs are all men. I support that change and I want the monarchy abolished.

    Canada and Australia have an identical constitutional set up...
    The Queen ultimately still rules both nations.
    Neither country really ever achieved true independence...eg the sitting Prime Minister of Australia (Gough Whitlam) was actually sacked by the Governor General in the mid '70's
    Coupling the rule, power and the influence of the British Crown with the financial oligarchs and Banking tyrants of the City of London and you realise how the British Empire still rules so much of the world.

  • @ducttape82
    @ducttape82 11 лет назад

    No question, however keep in mind, Canada was British at that point... the regiments who did the fighting were Canadian Regiments. Part of the reason the war of 1812 ended was after the Napoleonic wars came to a close, the regular british army units became available and the US didn't want to have to face them. The British didn't want to endure the cost of sending them overseas, so they signed a peace treaty putting the borders back to where they were pre-war.

    I think the best form of government is a limited one. Its purpose should be to simply maintain order and uphold social contracts. Right now we have a system of robbing peter to pay paul. It could be considered a pyramid scheme if not for the fact that the government can create money from nothing. If it wasn't for this it would have fallen apart by now as with most governments around the world.

    I am Canadian , born in Italy , so I've traveled and seen governments and ways of life all over . The reason Canada isn't questioning it's fragmented and bizarre way of government is because the country is too rich to complain . If the balance of wealth ran out , Canadians would then destroy their system , knowing that it has to be corrupt .Canada is the second largest country on earth with less population than manhattan , do the math , with resources alone every Canadian should be rich .

    It is not a fair tale thank you very much. You live in America, I live in Canada. That's a fact that you learn if you study the war in Canada. I'm sure that in the U.S. they teach things about Canada that we've done in the past that seems ridiculous and cowardly just like we learn. I'm not saying that Americans are cowardly. I'm merely proving a point by saying someone has no right to say a country's cowardly when theirs has done many things similar too.

    Given the United States failed in achieving any of its political objectives when it started the War of 1812 while the British Empire and its Canadian subjects succeeded in their primary objective of stopping America from taking over, I'd give the win to Britain and its then Canadian Colony. Most in US in 1800s rightfully considered the war a stupid mistake on our part. The Battle of New Orleans essentially happened after the war was over, and American military performance was generally inferior.

    just because they beat back the insurrection of Filipinos and established a 'friendly' government to them doesn't mean they were treating them very well. Do you know how many Filipinos died when the Americans came and they rebelled against them? Did you know the American Congress withdrew their foreign aid after they essentially landed Japan as a permanent military base in the Pacific?
    There is a reason Manila isn't internationally renowned anymore, considering it was once 'pearl of the pacific'

    You don't seem to know very much about the Philippines. I lived there for two years and speak Tagalog fluently. The overwhelming majority of Filipinos love Americans, and have named highways, schools, hospitals, etc. after U.S. General MacArthur. There wouldn't have been any bombing in the Philippines if it weren't for the Japanese (who bombed the Philippines first). To this day the Filipinos talk about the cruelty of the Japanese. Filipinos and U.S soldiers fought together during WWII.

    Why do people insist on debating Canada's military. Our "Shitty" military has the most advanced training system in the world. So much so America just invested in it. A lot of our weaponry is being used my military's all over the world. We just invested billions into a fighter created and funded by a bunch of other powerful nations. Canada's military is much more invested then you think. We classify our special forces ops FYI. (JTF2- Joint Task Force 2)

  • @JimmyG228
    @JimmyG228 12 лет назад

    International laws (where my opinion is based) regarding this matter is a little gray/confusing. What is clear though; when military vessels are attacked out of port, the attack it considered indirect. Any attack on civilian vessels own and/or operated by the said country (ie Canada) is considered a direct attack only if it happens in the said country's waters. If a military vessel is attack tied up in port & is attacked, the attack is considered direct, ie the attack of Pearl Harbor.

  • @JimmyG228
    @JimmyG228 12 лет назад

    ... Caribou but that attack was on Newfoundland. Which at the time wasn't apart of Canada. So even IF that sinking is seen as a direct attack, it still was NOT a direct attack on Canada. Again supporting my original comment & making your argument with me foolishly uninformed. LOL and you lectured ME about knowing what I'm talking about before commenting. Practice what you preach.
    You don't seem to understand the difference between a direct attack & a indirect attack. I, however do.

  • @JimmyG228

    FYI I took the time to read Wikipedia page on the Battle of the St. Lawrence. You asked I Google it, so I did. It did not report or imply ANY direct attacks on Canada took place. All but one attack was on merchant ships & Naval ships leaving port or in the St. Lawrence. These attacks full in the realm of indirect, not direct. Which supports my original comment & rips apart your foolish, arrogant argument.
    The only attack that could be seen in a direct manor was the sinking of the SS Caribou...

    Don’t be arrogant. I've studied 20th century warfare for over a decade. Don't lecture me about knowing or not knowing the subject matter before commenting. Given the extent I've studied the war & the fact I've never heard of any direct attacks on Canada, I doubt it ever happened. I NEVER said they didn't happen, I'm just sure IF they did, they aren't well known or I'd know about it by now. I even went so far as to clarify that I wasn't denying an attack ever happened so you wouldn't lecture me.

    She's the head of state of 16 different countries, South Africa isn't one of them, so she isn't the Queen of South Africa. She is, however head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations, which does include South Africa.
    Her official title is quite long, too long to bother quoting. However she is the head of the Church of England, thus making her the "Queen of England" (along with being Queen of many other countries), as it's the Church of England through which she gets her crown (authority) from.

    I don't know of any case of German U-Boats attacking our ports directly. They did for sure attack ships leaving port, but very rarely. All well known German attacks on Canada were in an indirect manor only, they never bombed, shelled, invaded, raided or threatened to do so.
    FYI just cuz I don't know of any direct attacks on Canada by Germany, I'm not saying they didn't happen, I'm just saying I doubt they did.

    I for one am happy to retain ties with Britain. It is apart of our history, and our British heritage is what separates us from Americans and should never be severed.
    As for WW2. Canada's pumped out ammunition, food, and vehicles for the British war effort. Our navy kept the Atlantic shipping lanes open, allowing for both Canadian and US aid to Britian (although the US was not involved in the war untill 1941, they did send aid to England prior to '41).

    2. How could a population of 34,108,752 and rising be entirely homosexual?
    3. Anything wrong with being gay?
    4. There are so many grammar and spelling mistakes that I find your argument to be extremely unconvincing.

    @AkivaII These are still not a prediction... You just reduce to scale to deal with microeconomics rather than the full pictures. You still finish with an estimation within a certain margin : just like the meteorologist does (max of, min of) rather than the climatologist... Except that the meteorologist and climatologist have one big advantage : it's easier to collect data with meteo than with economic, and the statistical&mathematical tools are rather similar.

  • @therrydicule
    @therrydicule 12 лет назад

    @AkivaII It's not the job of economist to make predictions. I been clearly warned 7 times in the 4 courses of economics I had took: it is not a prediction game, all an economist do is give a rational expectation with many warning (if this, and if that). Plus, they kind of saw it coming: a survey given by the FRBNY in October 2006 say that 65% of "forecaster" expected something between 1% growth or less for 2007&2008 combine. It just that the system is full of gamblers.

    @LiamUe I think you’re just missing my point of view. I live in BC, BC has a parliament building in Victoria but no parliament in it. It’s the home of the provincial legislature. However that being said BC still has a parliament, it’s in Ottawa. The federal parliament serves as parliament for all provinces & territories in the same way the British Parliament serves as the English Parliament too.
    Knowing that semantically I’m not wrong & nor are you. You are just missing my point of view.

  • @JimmyG228
    @JimmyG228 12 лет назад

    @LiamUe Im not an migrant. I was born & raised in Canada, you assume too much.
    I do know the difference between British & English, I've worked with the British Army. Note how its not called the English Army.
    Nevertheless you have once again indirectly supported my argument. With Scotland having its own Parliament & Wales & Northern Ireland having their own Assemblies, the parliament may be known officially as the British Parliament, doesn’t mean it isn’t a body of authority over England.

  • @JimmyG228
    @JimmyG228 12 лет назад

    @LiamUe How do you not know of the English Parliament???
    It's located at Westminster Palace in Westminster (part of London) on the Thames River. The Palace has a huge clock tower called Big Ben. The Palace was built in 11th century & rebuilt in 1834 after a fire. Parliament has been located there for centuries. Again, how do you not know of it?
    BTW I swore an oath of loyalty to the Queen of Canada Elizabeth II, her Hairs, successors & officer there by commissioned. My love is irrelevant.

  • @JimmyG228
    @JimmyG228 12 лет назад

    @LiamUe You just indirectly supported my argument. England is still a country with it's own Parliament. The parliament is the Queen's parliament in the same way all parliaments in the realm are the Queens. So by that logic she is still the Queen of England, not in title, but in legal & practical terms.
    I'm Canadian, in Canada, a totally different country from the UK, the Queen is officially, practically, & legally, "The Queen of Canada". I'm 100% she rules over England too.

    @JimmyG228 - Depends on who you voted for at the time. In Australia, the two main political parties are The Labour Party & The Liberal Party. Liberal voters threw their support behind the Governor General's decision to sack the PM and dismiss his entire government out of office. Meanwhile Labour supporters cried foul about it. Gough Whitlam's famous speech was:
    "May we say God save the Queen..... Because nothing will save the Governor General"
    Type in "Whitlam Dismisal" on RUclips to find out!

    @LiamUe You call out Rick about being wrong when he isn't... nice one.
    Queen Elizabeth II holds the title of Head of State of 16 independent sovereign countries. 1 of them of course being the UK. The UK is short for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Britain is an island made up of 3 none fully sovereign countries, Scotland, Wales & ENGLAND. The capital of the realm is London ENGLAND. So Risk is 100%, she is the Queen of England... plus several other countries.

  • @woohooboy
    @woohooboy 12 лет назад

    And what Rick Mercer is describing about how the Governor General having the ability to dissolve Parliament and replace the Prime Minster is exactly what happened in Australia back in 1975 when our Governor General at the time (the late John Kerr), dismissed the Labour Party who was in power and sacked the Prime Minister (Gough Whitlam) making it one of the most controversal decisions ever handed down in Australian government history.
    A fact that politican historians still debate to this day

    I think in order to finally convince Quebec to fully support Canada as a member and friend, we should end the British monarchy in Canada. I want them to speak English, I don't want to humiliate them, and most of all I don't understand why we should have a queen as our head who lives in our country one or two weeks in a year... @cornandbeefs The Economist, which is actually left leaning did an interesting article that touched based on the deceptive practices Canada uses to measure debt and calculated Canada's debt at 2008 numbers were 1.26 billion - again this number excludes debt held by certain governments and crown corps. Ontario hydro alone has over 30 billion in debt. The other thing about the US, a lot of other countries owe the US money including Canada.

  • @ShayisWY
    @ShayisWY 13 лет назад

    @cornandbeefs What is your source on state debt, in order for your number to be true, the US state debt on average would need to be 38% higher than what is stated. . Furthernore you implied that 16K per person is the total of all debts in Canada. This is wrong - this is one measure of one type of debt not the total of all Canadians. This figure does not factor in a penny of provincial, municpal, intermediary debt, or debt held through crown corporations.

  • @ShayisWY
    @ShayisWY 13 лет назад

    @darknessblack12 You take one measure of debt and try to portray it as all. The debt figure of the US includes state debt whereas the Canadian figure does not. Nor does it include the debt from crown corporations such the CMHC that has nearly 300 billion debt, or Ontario Hydro over 30 billions, plus dozens of others. Canadian provinces are nearly 10 times more in debt than the average US state. Canadian debt also does not factor in debt held through intermediares

    @hop1pop Actually it has already been ruled out as being impractical. Canadian oil is amongst the most expensive in the world. Long transocean pipelines accross the ocean are not even practical for middle eastern oil which is a lot cheaper - Hence other than small ocean crossings it has not been done.
    Canadians were not the first ones to invent jet aircraft....not even close. The Nazi's were. Where did you even get that from?

    @darknessblack12 .. is one the most indebt US state has only 8% debt as a % of GDP. Califnornia recent deficits have hit 24 billion dollars. Whereas Ontario with less than 1/3 the population has had deficits over 50 billion.

    @darknessblack12 I will actually even one up on you on this. The source I will be posting uses numbers from 2007 for Canada, one the best years for Canadian provincial debt and the numbers from the US will be from 2009, in the midst of the recession. Canada average province debt to GDP ration was 35% in 2007. Of course this is not including the massive debt accumulated in 2008, 2009, 2010. Now the average US state debt in 2009 was just above 4%. Heck California, which we all know is ....

  • @ShayisWY
    @ShayisWY 13 лет назад

    @hop1pop Actually it is not economically feasible to export Canadian oil in mass overseas given it is amongst the most expensive in the world oil to extract and refine. Furthermore most of it is inland. Russia. You imply Canada is more stable. In some was yes and in many ways no. The average Canadian province has 10 times the debt of the average American state. Canadian indviduals carry more debt, Canadian banks also required more bailout money as well. There are other ways as well....

  • @darknessblack12
    @darknessblack12 13 лет назад

    @hop1pop And in any case, economic dependence isn't necessarily a sign of one country being worse off. After all, our economic recovery from the recession was quicker thanks to our stable banking system, which explains why the dollar's at parity. You're the one who's shooting your mouth off x_x. Whether I argue for Canada's economic dependence on the US or not, the debate as to 'which country is better' is irrelevant.
