It’s supply and demand on the housing market and that demand is high around austin. It's sad to witness what gentrification has done to this beautiful city . Maybe about 10 years ago or longer the developers and greedy outsiders have pushed all middle income including minority communities out of the city in search of more normal affordable housing. It's sad ! This was once a beautiful and authentic place. Austin has become an empty shell of its former self.
Yep! And I don't even make that much. Half, I'm broke all the time. I've been here since I was 17, I'm now almost 49 years old. Only reason I've stayed is because I'm waiting for my youngest to graduate. Once she does, I'm moving out of Austin. It's ridiculous and my home taxes keep going up.
Almost the exact same story for me too, except I came here when I was 15 and Im 5 years older. My sons 20 and when he graduates from college I'm out of here.

Don’t move here. So not worth it, and it is way more expensive. These numbers are extremely low. Rent on a 2 bedroom is $1,800 (if you’re lucky) to 3,000 in an apartment. If you’re looking to buy a house, we’ll good luck. People are are making offers for 100k plus over asking price. This city is horrible!
My average utilities is 500 a month in Lubbock tx. For a one bedroom house, where I'm only home nights and weekends and turn of the HVAC when I go to work.
Shyt $200 + for electric, $120 for water+ $170 for cable+ $105 for internet+ trash pick up I can keep going. After all said and done you're left with $400 a month and you didn't buy groceries or put fuel in your car yet
Fast food places - any entry-level businessess - struggle to keep staff because the wages at $15 to $20 an hour don't help make ends meet, honestly. It takes two salaries to make it and have no children or just have roommates. This is unsustainable.
I live just outside of the Austin city limits. The numbers stated are actually higher than this. And many people in Austin aren't making anywhere near the amount stated in this video. If you can, stay far far away from this place. It has become a cesspool.

who cares about the average annual income? you should be looking at the median. and is that household income? because that means for TWO earners in the house. what's the annual median individual income? no-ooo, do it again...
Family of 4 couple with two kids, and house house hold earning 120k a year, you will not make it in Austin these numbers are way off electricity alone is anywhere between 150 and 250.00 especially during the hot summer months, renting a home will be anywhere from 2500 to 3500 per month, if you purchase a home your looking close to 500k in a decent neighborhood, if you stick to the th more restricted HOA neighborhoods house cost will rise, this guy is way off, it adds up quick.
What are you smoking 1600 for rent? You must be talking about Leander. Anywhere 30 minutes or less to downtown is gonna be 2k no question. But hey they’re adding toll lanes everywhere with peak prices around 10 bucks during rush hour
Yeah I make 85K a year. Parking alone is more than that transportation cost. Only thing accurate is the rent and even then it depends on where you live here

Used to live here from 2009-2022. Most of my friends had moved due to increase price of living, some of my favorite local business shut down, and just getting older. I found no reason to stay. I used to work a 40hr week job and able to afford my small studio apartment off of Duval. It’s since shot to double the amount I was spending when I renewed. Glad I had the opportunity to live there for so long, it was a lot of fun.
Here in Sydney, Australia, even a small 2 bedroom asbestos fibro weatherboard cottage in bad condition in a traditional working class area costs a million dollars

I was born and raised in Austin. I still live here now. Austin is awful. The main problem is the people. There’s too many people which leads to horrible traffic and congestion everywhere all of the time. There’s not enough housing or infrastructure to support so many people. People are the problem. Wherever there are people, there are problems.
Yes it has gone up so much in the past few years I have had an apartment for 10 years now The last 2 years have been homeless saving up for an apartment again.

I'm from the Austin/Surrounding area and this place and the outskirt towns are pretty 💩 nowdays. Too many people, the cost of living skyrocketed and traffic is much worse.
Austin was a Great Town. I lived there for four years in the 80s. Would never dream of moving there right now, with the city's current political state.
Absolutely not average prices for anything at all. Most people make a lot less than that but it's being brought up by the extremely wealthy in the downtown area- almost nobody I know personally makes more than 55K. I also lived in a very old, run down apartment almost as far from downtown as you can get and my rent was $1980... in 2018. It was well over $2200 when we finally had to move out in 2021. No idea what these sources are but they're AT LEAST a decade old.
First, median income should be used instead of "average" to rule out ultra wealthy from skewing the number to be higher. Median per household is about $79,000, but median per capita is only about $48,500. If you use his cost for a 1 bedroom rental, that's about 40% of your income going to rent. The distribution of rent cost on the lower end is tighter than the distribution of income, meaning, the lower your wage, the more percentage you're spending on rent. For a full time minimum wage job in Texas, if you were spending 40% on rent your rent would be $450. You're not finding anywhere renting for less than $650 in Austin or closer to 55% of your income.
I was making 72k in Austin and lived very humble. I was always broke , and I drove a normal Honda civic. Austin can be nice to visit but not live, too many homeless

@@nishiljaiswal2216 people moving in caused bad policy in Austin…
Oh, well that’s irrelevant to what this kind man was talking about. We were talking about housing and property prices in and around Austin. Doubling in the last 5 years because so many Californians moving out of the state that they messed up because they kept voting in the worst people. It’s supply and demand on the housing market and that demand is high around austin. The sad part is my father whom has lived here since the 80s and I whom was born here are subject to the same prices that you Californians are. So neither of us can even afford a nice enough house to live in, you have to drop 600k + to find something barely good enough for my standards and I know beggars can’t be choosers but like I’m not living in a dump id rather live in a nice apartment for 30k a year even tho I’m a native Texan my moms family was some of the first in Texas and my dads been here far longer than most Californians. It’s ridiculous. I hate Californians if I were the mayor I’d make y’all pay extra taxes and give it to the native Texans who need help. You’re not welcome here, it’s funny because the south mostly welcomes everyone but you have been BLACKLISTED!
@@whatdoyoumean5700 caused what? the policy I am talking about zoning and land use which we have not changed in decades
Lived in Texas all my life especially on the east side of 35. Now you see people walking dogs walking babies like it’s just a natural thing to do. Austin look completely different in early 2000s now I could hardly recognize the place all these damn Tesla drivers.
Food $500 a month? Ha!!
i hate living here 😭
You would have loved it back around the late 80s early 90s...it was paradise, but the secret got out
i like it??? idk why there is so much hate
@@fartdog2 coz its trash
@@fartdog2 Californians, hefty prices, I work overnight security at a nicer apartment on 7th street and have to call the cops about crazy usually homeless people probably 3 times a week. Austin has become a shitshow
Skill issue. Like actually
Please don’t move here 💀😭😭😭 We’re literally getting over populated- we have no teachers-schools shutting down-Tons of traffic and there are barley any homes to buy or even rent and apartment suck 💀
I don’t know what part of the city you’re in but there are constantly new apartments going up. If anything there’s a shortage of residents.
@@adamhamilton8313 They're asking for way too much. They'll throw up these shiny new apartments, then expect you to hand over your firstborn to live in them. Or, they'll buy low-income apartments, slap some paint on them, and then double rent because it's "fancy" now.
Transportation is more that 1500. Hell I live 9 miles from D.T. costs that in 2 months with sitting in traffic and California idiots moving here and condo communities building up.
Electricity alone is $200+ a month in the summer which is 9 months out of the year. Health Insurance is another $300 a month.
My average utilities is 500 a month in Lubbock tx. For a one bedroom house, where I'm only home nights and weekends and turn of the HVAC when I go to work.
More accurately
Average pay $15
Average monthly income $2,400
Average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment $1,800+bills
Average hours 32-40/week
Thanks for making my Austin ass feel even broker when I thought I was maintaining.
And where the heck is this gross income salary?!??
I live in austin and make more than this. No car payment either and I’m still broke cause of how expensive shit is here
Transport more like 122-150 a week not a month my man jaja incomes are less than that if you dont have some time of degree or experience
Take the bus
And its gonna get worse if people from California and new york keeps
Moving over here 😡
Shyt $200 + for electric, $120 for water+ $170 for cable+ $105 for internet+ trash pick up I can keep going. After all said and done you're left with $400 a month and you didn't buy groceries or put fuel in your car yet
My light bill alone was 373$ in Texas
What's even more telling, is that the average income listed here doesn't even make you middle class in Austin.
If you have kids, you'd have to rely on public assistance to survive on $67k in Austin.
Fast food places - any entry-level businessess - struggle to keep staff because the wages at $15 to $20 an hour don't help make ends meet, honestly. It takes two salaries to make it and have no children or just have roommates.
This is unsustainable.
My employees don’t make less then 14 and always full 40. They still broke
@@ricardoguereca1699 You cant get an apartment anywhere like that.
No way you spend 500 $ in food unless you eat ramen noodles daily
I live just outside of the Austin city limits. The numbers stated are actually higher than this. And many people in Austin aren't making anywhere near the amount stated in this video. If you can, stay far far away from this place. It has become a cesspool.
Who tf is spending 1.6k on a 1 bed but then only spending barely over 100 on utilities!? Like get your life together and spend less on rent while using an appropriate amount towards utilities 😂 after one week of showering they’re like aww shit used up all my showers. Gotta go 20+ days without a shower to keep my utilities under 100. Aww shit I already used the electric stove 3x this month, I’m at my limit 😂
I did see there a vehicle note or vehicle insurance, or a gas or water bill, health insurance, dental insurance etc a good incomplete estimate
I bought an rv and moved an hour out of the city, rent: 500$ 😂🕺 no more wasting money here and no more toxic roommates. Should have done this when I was 18!
who cares about the average annual income? you should be looking at the median. and is that household income? because that means for TWO earners in the house. what's the annual median individual income? no-ooo, do it again...
Who remembers side pocket on NLamar, Einstein's on the drag and celebration station if you don't your not from ATX
Only thing accurate is the rent and even then it depends on where you live here
That's COMBINED HOUSEHOLD INCOME 🎉🎉
as someone who lives right outside i can confirm that its not worth it to live here lol texas is the worst 🥲 i work in austin but cant afford to live there so i live 40mins outside austin and its still expensive as fuck here
Did everyone not notice this math doesn't even add up?
Used to live here from 2009-2022.
Most of my friends had moved due to increase price of living, some of my favorite local business shut down, and just getting older. I found no reason to stay.
I used to work a 40hr week job and able to afford my small studio apartment off of Duval. It’s since shot to double the amount I was spending when I renewed. Glad I had the opportunity to live there for so long, it was a lot of fun.
PLEASE STOP MOVING HERE!!! US LOCALS CANT AFFORD TO LIVE ANYMORE!! I REPEAT *STOP* MOVING HERE!!!!!
They used to say, "Keep Austin Weird!" Well, there's nothing "weird" about turning into Dallas.
Where do you get those numbers 😂😂😂. I don't think not even half of the people living here can't said the have 10000 dollars in savings.
Those totals don't add up. And if you own your home, property taxes rob you of EVERYTHING
That utilities one is definitely wrong, electricity alone can almost run you $150 a month since its unregulated.
Here is the real price. Net monthly income is $5800 after taxes. Rent is $2,750
I’m from cali and it’s crazy the amount of times I tell folks I’m from LA and they are not impressed at all.
Here in Sydney, Australia, even a small 2 bedroom asbestos fibro weatherboard cottage in bad condition in a traditional working class area costs a million dollars
My 5 bedroom house is $2400 monthly in the suburb, built in 2021.
This has to be old... Austin is an expensive place to be
Guys move to the smaller town in texas its way cheaper to buy a house that has like 4 room 3 bats and a bonus for 600k which also includes a outside TV and fireplace with a outside grill that in total is 600k oh and with fully upgraded ovens etc
You didn't account for the taxes taken out of the paycheck. You can't live off of 67k a year if you live alone.
Yeah that's about right. I live in Austin. It's getting crazy how much they are building around here.
Live in Travis County. 2 people 32k per year. 3 bedroom house on an acre with a creek and chickens. New car in driveway. Manage your income. Baby sitters get 20 bucks an hour.
Dude, y'all signed up for that shit.
You could choose to live in West Virginia, Mississippi, or North Dakota at half that INCOME yes, and also for less than half those expenses...
Remember, we can live anywhere in AMERICA, we are not forced to live in any specific location.
Yeah, this is a 100% bullshit as a 19 year-old who moved out at 18 and is just finishing up his first lease. I can promise you this is some class A BS
Don't move here, I've had brand new bicycles stolen and my car broken into. Both times I filed police reports and had video of the crime taking place. Both times the police did nothing.
That’s what happens when people say ‘Defund the Police’ 🤷🏿♂️
utilities run $200 to as high as $600 when peak summer hits in Family household.
I'm from the Austin/Surrounding area and this place and the outskirt towns are pretty 💩 nowdays. Too many people, the cost of living skyrocketed and traffic is much worse.
Just move somewhere else besides here, quit moving here 😭
Austin was a Great Town. I lived there for four years in the 80s. Would never dream of moving there right now, with the city's current political state.
Austin is INFLATED because of high demand to move there. Similar things have happened in Idaho.
I live in Austin and there are an absolute crap ton of 1 bed apartments 6-800 sq ft that are 11-1300 per month in 2023.
That average rent is a LIE.
Dont forget to add insurance
Its horrible and is deep blue. Homeless is absolutely ridiculous!!
I live in AUS now. My mortgage is only $2800/mo because I put 70k dn on a 3500 square ft house. I make 90 a year and I’m broke.
Uhm utilities and food are completely wrong. What do you do dine in at restaraunts 7 days per week??? And knowbody has utilities that cheap...
Austin's way more expensive than what he is saying. Even the surrounding areas (where I grew up) are unbelievable expensive
Lol! I LIVE IN AUSTIN, AND UTILITIES A MONTH IS ABOUT 400$ A MONTH IN A HOUSE. ABOUT FOOD IS AROUND 65$ EVERY MEAL.
I live in Coleman Tx by Austin
I make $50,000. I paid cAsh for my mini mansion $23,000. I have no car no debt at all
Life is good
I was making 72k in Austin and lived very humble.
I was always broke , and I drove a normal Honda civic.
Austin can be nice to visit but not live, too many homeless
Austin is way more expensive than this. I make $16.50/hr doing construction and I’m barely scraping by; employers here will undercut your pay big time unless you work for a big tech company or something
I've been telling all of my friends in CA to move to Texas.
I blame the Californians
Aw man. I am reading too many comments. I have been planning to move to Austin for a while.
From fast research I have found some inexpensive places online, but comments shoot the price and fear way up.
Is it really that bad? Any suggestions?
I am a Austin native and this is cap rent is 4x the amount we pay state taxes and animal taxes our water is dirty as hell and smells like cow poop everywhere DO NOT COME HERE A BAT WILL PEE IN YOUR COFFEE
