First Time Being a Derrick Hand On A Drilling Rig

- First time up the derrick running pipe in, Was a little freaky. Very slow but it was my first time. Drilling rigs in Saskatchewan Canada.

Trust your ropes,other than that ..pretty good,you'll get better and quicker with time,no complaints here..
I broke out Derricks in about 1979 on small rigs like this. You can get away without using ropes and things. Then about five years later I work Derek‘s on the biggest rigs in the Rocky Mountains and I had to learn all over again how do use ropes and everything.
I probably was in the best shape of my life and weighed about 220. Biggest board I have worked is Parker 112. 28 feet across at the board. You could rack 18,000 ft 5 inch on one side. And A small guy about 160 show me how to work the board and where to put the ropes. And I thought I was a pretty damn good Derekhand. It’s all about leverage.
As a greenhorn at age 17 in the mid80's from a rousty to roughnecking eventually working on derricks on onshore and offshore, its the derrickhand work i miss the most. YTBUT. I transitioned into a service hand, a coring hand from 1991 and became a consultant in 98 up to 2012. Now at 62 i am constantly watching riglife videos.

Gotta break out eventually. This is the easy part . Learn your pumps and mud. Yours pits will be different who ever you work for . . Keep an eye on the hopper location because you don’t want to mix LCM in that . I always had 20 bags of mud on the pit so my floor hands could have a dry bit trip.
I remember my first time latching pipe watching the blocks come up the Derrick was exciting

I was working a job one time were for some reason the flying ants had a nest up there and I had these red biting flying ants screwing with me all the time
@@davidbradley6179 oh wow that would of sucked!!! We get them here were I live from time to time....I'm a pumper and we've had them on our tanks and they would cover you in a few minutes while gauging tanks.

Everyone leaves you alone, good workout & man the tanks on the ground. Great place to be
Use your lead out rope to hold pipe , and you won’t have to hold on to your belt rope. Once you get the pipe to the front and center of board you can stand up straight and be ready to latch em up. Those ropes are up there to work for you not you working for them, adjust your ropes according to whatever your doing and trust the ropes and your harness and you will be surprised how much better and less stress on your body it will be. Your doing good though!

I remember my first time working derricks about the only thing I was thinking about was sure hope that rope that’s tied to my waist doesn’t break.

I worked a job in Idaho one time and we had terrible ice storm come through. We were going in the hole and the board had an inch of ice hard ice. The pipe was all iced up around the tool joints where I couldn’t even latch the elevators. I told the guys on the floor beat the pipes with a sledgehammer to try to break the ice loose dangerous as hell big chunks of ice coming out of the Derek. We had to go real slow that night. I could barely stand up on the ice probably we should’ve shut down and waited on the weather but that’s not what rough Knicks do
@@davidbradley6179 I remember once we were in Texas and a bad storm came up pounding down rain strong winds lightning going on. We weren’t tripping pipe just making hole and trying to keep the brakes from getting wet and lightning hit the Derrick and a blue ball of lightning run down the dead man and in the ground. All this happened in the middle of the night .
First time I worked derricks it was on bat wings.
How old were you when you first started? Just curious because we have a hiring event for Nabisco and I’m trying to weigh my options about taking the chance. I’m 36
I was 20. Worked there for about 5 years. If your in decent physical shape and a hard worker you'll make it. I was only 5'5 and 130 pounds so I was pretty much the smallest on the rig but I handled it

Hardhats are a joke never had one do anything for me except may be bumping my head on a beam. Check out the statistics of when a hardhat saved anybody

You need a real Derrick harness so you don't have a positioning lanyard connecting you to your angel line.

The board was actually the easiest of a . I’m derrick mans duty on a digging rig. I was a little scared with collar stands for a few trips but then no big deal. Ropes and leverage are your best friend. Of course, this was before top drive’s and power everything.

James Marris I was terrified of heights. Derrick hand never showed up so I had to go up.
@@AhZif man I'm afraid of heights too but work on 3 story ladders currently. How did you get in the industry? I have no oil experience but want to be a hand. I already live in texas, have a highschool diploma, speak and write english, and know basics with hand tools.

@@AhZif yep. Notice that the elevator horns are on the same side of the kelly hook instead of the pipe guide.
Oh yeah I gotcha, I think because the monkey boards were full and just before this we were running pipe in the suicide way. Where you pick one up from the mouse hole and catwalk at the same time. I think that hole we were over 6000 meters deep
For some reason that’s called the cows cock and I never had any idea where it was there Supposedly you can let your pipe out in it and it holds it into your lower job that never works

That day I think we set the record for deepest hole in Saskatchewan. Filled the Derrick and then had to start laying all the rest out
