Very well done video. I was in the Derrick 40 years ago and loved every minute of it. Latching pipe was such an adrenaline rush. Especially when you could accomplish a ringer.

Love this Vedic, I worked on oil rigs for five years. Learned every position, but loved the Derick and throwing chain. Best years of my life, thank you.

Figured out later he probably didn't mean I was the best derrick hand ! Big difference if you've worked the patch you'll understand!! Sure miss those days tho!! Thanks for the memories!
Awesome video. On a triple seeing that block coming up swaying holding a 90' plus stand of pipe timing that latch... The first time you miss gives you a bad feeling and the next time gives the floor hands a bad feeling. No, this no joke for the ones that's tripped pipe in a derrick.

I worked Derrick for over 25 years because I liked the solitude that the Derrickhand has on a Service Rig. You look after your Pump & Tank and the Pipe usually on your own. Not so many idiot Oil company reps to deal with as a Derrickhand.
I hear that. Loved being up the stick in my youth. If you had a good driller and crew it was a blast. Didn't care as much for pulling rods but tripping pipe was a trip...
Yup. Derrick best position on the right rig. As long as mud is good and pump running, nobody says shit to you. I worked as a derrick hand for 7 yrs before go being a driller. Loved every minute of it. But then, that was back in the day when shit was still pretty 'western'. LOL
I can see the excitement in that for about a month, man. I'm sure the comradery would be something else working like that all day together. However, I believe you could do even more complex things than that. It would be alright for a while but not permanent. That would be a waste of your talent.

Cool video but I couldn’t finish watching it. The music was overdubbed way too loud. You can’t hear the pipe sing over it, and if you turn it up, the music is too hard on the ears.
A few questions. How long are the strands as the fisheye lens distorts it a bit? What happens when you’re out of strands in that rack where they’re all laid out there? Do you get more somehow? If so, how are they loaded into that “hopper”? Are you signaling anybody that the strand is properly loaded or does the derrick keep moving and you just have to keep up? What is something roomies fuck up a lot doing this job? And when you push the strand out waiting for the “grip” (maybe?) to come back up, are you resting it against the tackle block it self or are you suspending the wait of that strand leaning as it comes up? I notice you lean it out and then pull it back. Thanks for the cool vid and very interesting work. Be safe if you’re still doing it.
As far as the resting against the block, I’m pretty sure he does it to smooth out any sway so it’s easier to slap the grips together. I have no fuckin clue about oil rigs, but that’s the best thing I could come up with
The video is on a double, each pipe stand is about 60 feet consisting of two 30 foot sections. On triples, the stand consists of 3 30 foot sections of pipe for a total of about 90 feet Drill bits wear out. What is happening in the video is previously all the pipe has been pulled out of the hole in 60 foot sections (speeds things up). The bit has been replaced and now they are putting all the pipe back into the hole. Once all the pipe is back in the hole, drilling continues. Every additional 30 feet of drilling requires pipe to be added, A single pipe is pulled up from the v-door and added to the top of the drill stem.
Miss the Brotherhood. Miss the work. But keeping your mouth shut when you get hurt is what I miss the most. Kids don't even know how to shut their mouths these days. Crying bout everything! Same as company men.
I have a question. Why do you hold the pipe with an outstretched arm and then pull it back towards you just before the block gets up there? Just curious.
Just a habit to keep the block away from the board. If the block is swaying back and forth that will keep it from hitting the board. Of course as long as it’s not out of control! 😂
@@LaCadena516 oh, so you're actually using the pipe to guide and stabilize the block on the way up? Interesting. I couldn't pick that out of the video. Thanks for the answer!
Any tips for beginner Derrickhands? I got it down coming out of the hole but I can't seem to get it right going in the hole. Any recommendations on how far to adjust your lanyard ect?
You want to be able to hang out past the end of the board. If your lanyard is too short you will always have a hard time reaching out to the elevators. Also if all you are tripping is ph-6 you need to hobble the elevators to where they are just almost level. That will make latching them much easier. Other than that it’s all about timing! Hope this helps!
