I live alone in a single room apartment. I would love to have a traditional air fryer and an oven, IF I have the space. So instead, I bought an air-fryer-oven to save space. The foods might not be a Michelin star restaurant level but it's good enough for me. You gain some, you lose some.

I actually prefer the toaster oven style of air fryer. It's more versatile and It's much easier to keep clean as well. Just wrap foil around the bottom liner and make it loose enough that you can gently press the foil into it's indentation.
Also, always, always, always slide the racks out with a tray/plate under it. It will save you time and frustration with clean-up.

It is just perfect for the two of us, and takes up very little space on my small countertop. I roasted salmon filets for dinner tonight and they were the best ever - slightly crispy on the outside but moist inside. Best of all, no smelly kitchen or difficult clean-up. My only complaint would be the lack of even a few printed recipes to get started. My generation does not find it easy to access the QR code and use the smart phone app. I bought a recipe book instead, which gave me the confidence to experiment.

I think the beginning of the video where she favours the basket over the oven style is misleading. Looks more like an infomercial where the oven style makes a terrible mess. We have had both and they both have advantages and disadvantages. Depending which one you get, the oven style definitely gives you a lot more room and flexibility and they are certainly not that hard to clean if you are careful removing the food (hold a plate or small cooking sheet under the shelf as you pull it out). The drip tray in the bottom catches anything that falls when cooking. For example - tonight I cooked some fish on the middle rack and a few minutes before it was done I put some asparagus on a rack and just slid it into the slot above the fish rack so both were done at the same time - could never do that with a basket model. We have a Sur la Table Oven model that is only marginally bigger than a 6 qt basket model but can easily cook twice as much. Finally, as everyone knows, air fryers cook better if you can get some separation between the pieces you are cooking to allow better air circulation. Once again, the oven model works better because you have more room the spread the food out. PS. The model we have also comes with a conventional type basket you can just slide in on top of the drip tray - also an rotisserie basket that is great for fries or wings.

It is nearly impossible to clean, but as the presenter said, this style oven is universally hard to clean. My favorite meal consists of a marinated chicken breasts with onions, mushrooms and red or orange peppers - tons of room for all done in 16-17 minutes at most. The trick is to just line the basket with foil or baking paper so any grease doesn't drop though the gaps. For messy items like chicken there's a proper non stick roasting tray that it comes with - you see it in the video below the air fryer basket but she didn't use it which is why it made such a mess. It's very weird that the video spent ages showing off one air fryer but only showed the negatives of the toaster oven one - which is actually much better value over time as it can cook a full size cake, pizza or other meals that would normally require a oven.

What is the great drawback with air fryers and related appliances? The cleaning! Not the dishwasher proof drawers (which reviewers like to feature) but the element. Many elements are difficult to clean even with a toothbrush in those tiny spaces. Some users have found you can sometimes gently lift the element if you are handy with a screw driver giving more room for cleaning. I certainly don't want this hassle or the risks. View the air fryer cleaning videos on line. Fryers operate at very high temperatures and that debris on the element can drop onto your food. Best clean often.
There are also reports from a number of users that some air fryers do smell - a plastic - rubber odour which does not go away. Not cardboard under grills! Take a look at Cathy's fryer reviews. Frankly I prefer the stainless steel of my convection oven to fryers' non-stick surfaces both from a health and cleaning point of view.
Many thanks for this excellent video Gear Heads with the differences between fryers and toasters clearly profiled.

I've been using "air fryers" for more than 10 years and cleaning the heating element has never been an issue. Just like the broiler elements on a gas stove, the halogen heating elements pretty much take care of themselves with a 600+ degree F surface temperature that turns everything into a fine ash that dissipates un-noticed. I've never noticed a bad smell after use like one can get with a microwave oven.
Mostly I have used the more old fashioned "halogen oven" (sometimes "turbo oven) Basically, a large glass or stainless steel bowl with the halogen heating unit built into the lid. Though I agree that dealing with the hot lid requires some forethought (I built a special rack) I like the larger, nearly 12" diameter of the bowl which allows for a full size pizza and also for a full size pizza stone which I can pre-heat and achieve a genuine crispy bottom crust. Full size chickens, cakes, loaves of bread and Sunday roasts are also easily done.
I live in a tropical climate and one of the great advantages of halogen cooking is being able to take the unit outside on hot days and not add additional heat to the house like a traditional oven does. Much more power efficient as well.

I bought a Toshiba convection oven/air fryer, and I loved it until...I tried to clean the supposed non-stick interior. Because the food is so much closer to the walls of the oven, they get dirty much, much faster, and as someone who doesn't wanna set aside an hour to clean my clean every few days, the oven ended up in my garage, still reeking of beer batter fish and French fries The other problem is that it's virtually impossible to clean underneath the heating elements, since they're not removable. I went back to using my regular self-cleaning oven, where all I need to do to clean it is to hit the "self-clean" button every few weeks.

I have a Breville Smart Oven and I’m very happy with it. I also don’t like nonstick for the chemicals released from the nonstick coating. Therefore, my choice is the stainless steel finish of the Breville Smart Oven. Additionally, my niece has to replace her air fryer about once a year. My Breville Smart Oven is over 6 years old and still going strong. I found that if you clean the oven regularly, it’s not difficult to clean. The trays/baskets remove easily for cleaning and the bottom tray that’s located below the lower baking elements cleans up easily. Happy baking/air frying! Also, thanks for this review 😀

Re the chicken wings: you don't have to put them in a single layer. The irregular shape of them means that you can dump a whole lot into the air fryer and the air will still circulate really well. I usually full the basket to the top, and give the wings a shake halfway through the cooking time.

@@christyxy702 I'd go more by volume than weight because they need to fit in your air fryer. Given that 1lb is about 450g, I'm sure I could cook that amount in my Philips air fryer. I used to have a smaller Philips, but now I've got a Philips XXL.
The only time you would have to put wings in single layers would be if you were using a relatively wet batter/crumb coating that might rub off before it cooks. If I'm using a plain flour/baking soda coating, or just a marinade, then I just chuck the wings in to the basket's Max fill line.

I couldn’t believe how good it all was. Cleaning was a little bit of a pest, but not the worst thing i’ve ever done (I wrapped the crumb catcher in the base in foil)

I've got one of the toaster oven combinations and I love it - with a few caveats like cleaning and in my case a manufacturer that does not provide spare parts, which will make me go to a different brand next time.
That said, it's a perfect replacement for the large oven I have in my kitchen. I have a shelf in the garage with small appliances, so they don't clutter up the kitchen. I almost never use a microwave, so it's in the garage. The little toaster oven is in the garage too and that's a good thing: we live in the south, so it's hot. Being able to keep the house cool while still using an oven is great, plus if you do airfry or roast an entire chicken you leave the smell in the garage too. Since I got that toaster oven I rarely use my big oven for anything other than pizza and bread where you need the size and for the bread I can select steam injection for the perfect crust - a function a toster oven doesn't have. For a two person household like ours the investment into a $400 toaster oven is definitely worth it in my book. It's also a time-saver. My large oven takes half an hour to preheat, the toaster oven goes to 400 in about 90 seconds.
I don't use multiple layers in the oven though. Although convection I found that there is a difference between the levels and therefor I just use one tray (which is enough for 2 people anyways).

@@becauseimafan Which is completely false since heating anything over 335 F is too hot and will cause release of toxins. Also, even if you only use 325 F and below, after about 2 years of use, it needs to be replaced as it deteriorates even from repeated heating at those lower temperatures over a 2 year span. Those are the facts. They should have made it with a metal core coated with a nonstick ceramic shell like the Greenpan items. Those don't leak toxins up to 450 F, but would also need to be replaced after about 4 years since the ceramic coating will soften over that time span of repeated heating.

To Clean your Breville Oven 1st take a moist paper towel with white vinegar ( very lightly spray, not much is needed) once you wipe, then use a second, but dry paper towel and wipe up the wet window, do dry again till all the moisture is gone. Success back to see through and clean. The same for pan or inside oven panels. Or soapy Dawn dish detergent to wipe down. But catch pan wipe with dry paper towels until dry. Don't air dry the pan. Leaves spots... Happy Brevilling! I'm a Breville owner all most a year now. It still looks shiny and new. Some parts of the heating elements are harder to clean. Wipes as best with a damp cloth to stop build up of burn ingredients. That's all🤷‍♀️👍I love my Breville ❣

with drawer style fryers breadcrumbs tend to get embedded in the teflon making it harder to clean over time and when the fan dies the whole unit is worthless. it is for those reasons I upgraded to a Gourmia GTF7600 after my old air fryer died. no doubt some spots are hard to reach when cleaning. but like a normal oven you don't need to clean it very often unless you make really messy foods on a regular basis. as for the basket a grill brush can get the job done to a reasonable level with little effort but a good pressure washer will be needed if you want perfection. another thing to note is that the wings made in this video are not done correctly if you want results close to what oil frying can give you need to render the fat and you can't do that in any fryer without elevating the wings. because the fat will pool under the wing making one side soggy and then start smoking long before the wings are cooked. the trick for a toaster oven/airfryer is to buy a 12.5inch tray+rack combo and bend the edges a little so it slides in then add a little water to the tray to keep the fat from burning. you also need aluminum free baking powder+salt to draw out moisture and give it that nice wing flavor.

Don't get fooled by judging an air fyer capacity by just the volume size. Some air fyers are narrow but deep which gives you a small base to spread out your food to maximize useable cooking area. Look for a basket that is square with the widest base which will give you the most cooking surface so you can spread out food for better crisping and even cooking. A basket that is narrow and deep is useless if you have to stack food then nothing cooks evenly and does not crisp up properly and also it will be difficult to get a spatula or something in there to flip foods.
The other thing is that even with the largest capacity baskets available, air fryers are not the ideal thing to use for cooking for more than two or three people at a time if you plan to cook like a whole meal like a meat, and a couple of sides for several people because it would take forever to cook everything if you had to wait for one dish to cook, then another and so on and even longer if you had to cook in batches. I like my air fryer but I have had times I have been slaving for several hours just cooking batches of something when i could of just spent an hour by using the oven or splitting the cooking by cooking certain things in the air fryer and using the stove to cook something else at the same time. Sure the air fryer may cook some things faster but if you have to do several batches instead of one in the oven then it will actually take you longer. It'll take about an average of about 20 minutes to cook most things and let's say about about 5 minutes to unload one batch and to load another. So imagine how long it will take you if you have to cook a large amount. So for about 3-4 light eaters and one main and one side it'll work. For big eaters or cooking for a party? Use your stove or oven.

The catching thing’s ease of cleaning depends on whether you have anything baked on(from drips) My son tried air frying left over pizza and the burnt cheese took some elbow grease that he didn’t appreciate, LOL! A couple of years ago, we were in between homes after selling our old one and before our new one was finished being built. We stayed for those couple of months in a rental cabin that didn't have an oven, so bought the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, and loved it so much that we use it in our new home. I use it to toast, bake small amounts of foods and also proof my bread before baking. I used it in the rental to bake full loaves of bread; it was a tight fit but it worked okay. I don't use it for that anymore as my regular oven does that job, but I still use it to proof my bread. I haven't used it as an air fryer, although the mesh rack is in one of my cabinets, as I wasn't sure it would do a decent job there. I was glad to see this video on that function, although the clean-up might be a pain, so if I do try the air fry function, I will likely do something not so messy. Thanks for the info-it was helpful!

I had this Breville toaster oven, the fan is mounted on the right side of the oven and the fan speed is about half of a normal airfryer, that means this is a conventional oven instead of an airfryer, fatty foods like chicken wings comes out great even if you don't turn on the fan! but chips comes out soggy even if you put on the air fryer setting, no where crispy as a traditional air fryer. The traditional air fryers have a fan on the top exactly behind the heating elements and the speed is so high that the hot air literally airfries the food, there are also other toaster ovens that have fan on the top behind the elements like the traditional airfryers but the fan speed is weak. I wish some company make a toaster oven airfryer and place the fan on the top with the same speed of a traditional airfryer or even faster because of a larger capacity, the icing on the cake will be if the fan speed is multi adjustable automatically without steps 👌 until then I highly recommend to buy a traditional air fryer and a separate toaster oven.

Breville also makes a smaller $350 version called the "Smart Oven Air Fryer". If you have a limited amount of counter space, I suggest that you look up the dimensions of both models before you buy -- in our kitchen, the Pro would have been too large for the intended space.
