We just switched from an air fryer to an air fryer toaster oven, and it has been a huge quality of life improvement in every way. We can fit more in it without increasing cooking times. We can set different trays at different heights for different foods. But by far, the very best thing about it is that fries take less than half of the time. Instead of putting them in the basket, then needing to pause and shake twice before they're done in about 22-24 minutes, they're done in 10 minutes. Five minutes, toss them about, switch which tray is on top, five more minutes. And they get way more uniformly crispy. And they're significantly easier to clean, just pull out the trays and wash, and there's a bottom crumb tray.

What is the great drawback with air fryers and related appliances? The cleaning! Not the dishwasher proof drawers (which reviewers like to feature) but the element. Many elements are difficult to clean even with a toothbrush in those tiny spaces. Some users have found you can sometimes gently lift the element if you are handy with a screw driver giving more room for cleaning. I certainly don't want this hassle or the risks. View the air fryer cleaning videos on line. Fryers operate at very high temperatures and that debris on the element can drop onto your food. Best clean often.
There are also reports from a number of users that some air fryers do smell - a plastic - rubber odour which does not go away. Not cardboard under grills! Take a look at Cathy's fryer reviews. Frankly I prefer the stainless steel of my convection oven to fryers' non-stick surfaces both from a health and cleaning point of view.
Many thanks for this excellent video Gear Heads with the differences between fryers and toasters clearly profiled.

I've been using "air fryers" for more than 10 years and cleaning the heating element has never been an issue. Just like the broiler elements on a gas stove, the halogen heating elements pretty much take care of themselves with a 600+ degree F surface temperature that turns everything into a fine ash that dissipates un-noticed. I've never noticed a bad smell after use like one can get with a microwave oven.
Mostly I have used the more old fashioned "halogen oven" (sometimes "turbo oven) Basically, a large glass or stainless steel bowl with the halogen heating unit built into the lid. Though I agree that dealing with the hot lid requires some forethought (I built a special rack) I like the larger, nearly 12" diameter of the bowl which allows for a full size pizza and also for a full size pizza stone which I can pre-heat and achieve a genuine crispy bottom crust. Full size chickens, cakes, loaves of bread and Sunday roasts are also easily done.
I live in a tropical climate and one of the great advantages of halogen cooking is being able to take the unit outside on hot days and not add additional heat to the house like a traditional oven does. Much more power efficient as well.

Therefore, my choice is the stainless steel finish of the Breville Smart Oven. Additionally, my niece has to replace her air fryer about once a year. My Breville Smart Oven is over 6 years old and still going strong. I found that if you clean the oven regularly, it’s not difficult to clean. The trays/baskets remove easily for cleaning and the bottom tray that’s located below the lower baking elements cleans up easily. Happy baking/air frying! Also, thanks for this review 😀

I found it didn't work well for fish, hard to get out or turn but do like for frozen naan bread, some roasted veggies, etc--so I'm hoping the new Breville will be a good combo for the times I use an air fryer and the almost daily use of the oven (doesn't have a light, etc--MUCH older)for things like baked fish dishes, roasted chicken breasts, etc. Your saying you give up some things but gain others seem right to me.

Oh! You are NOT supposed to wrap foil around the drip tray! It actually warns this on all convection oven air fryers. It causes the oven to heat higher than it’s supposed to SND can easily cause fires!
I actually learned this the hard way because, like you, I used to do this same thing, for the same reason. Until the fateful day while cooking it started smoking like crazy, the inside started throwing flames, and I luckily immediately shut it off and unplugged it! It was super scary! I immediately went online to see if this was a common occurrence, and that’s when I learned you are not to put foil on the bottom pull out liner tray. This ended up ruining my over/toaster/air fryer and I had to go out and buy a new one. I’ve never used foil in the bottom again.
Now, using foil to wrap food while cooking on the upper level(s) is fine. Or to line the baking tray with foil is fine. It’s using foil on that liner tray, because it is so close to the heating coils, that makes it dangerous. Just an important public service announcement I wanted to spread out there, so no one ever makes the same mistake that I made. I got lucky by being close by and seeing this happen in time to shut off and unplug I only ended up ruining my appliance. Others may not be so lucky as me, and end up burning their house down!

@shellyshort6418 ... I have been using a B&D toaster oven with convection and rotisserie function for ten years, it has the same efficient 'Infra-Red' quartz heating elements as the Breville, and easily accommodates a full pizza. I'm not sure if I missed something here, but the only difference that I see, besides being more than twice as expensive, is that the Breville has the air fry basket style tray and no rotisserie. Is the Breville simply a nicer toaster oven with a gimmicky tray?

I think the beginning of the video where she favours the basket over the oven style is misleading. Looks more like an infomercial where the oven style makes a terrible mess. We have had both and they both have advantages and disadvantages. Depending which one you get, the oven style definitely gives you a lot more room and flexibility and they are certainly not that hard to clean if you are careful removing the food (hold a plate or small cooking sheet under the shelf as you pull it out). The drip tray in the bottom catches anything that falls when cooking. For example - tonight I cooked some fish on the middle rack and a few minutes before it was done I put some asparagus on a rack and just slid it into the slot above the fish rack so both were done at the same time - could never do that with a basket model. We have a Sur la Table Oven model that is only marginally bigger than a 6 qt basket model but can easily cook twice as much. Finally, as everyone knows, air fryers cook better if you can get some separation between the pieces you are cooking to allow better air circulation. Once again, the oven model works better because you have more room the spread the food out. PS. The model we have also comes with a conventional type basket you can just slide in on top of the drip tray - also an rotisserie basket that is great for fries or wings.

My favorite meal consists of a marinated chicken breasts with onions, mushrooms and red or orange peppers - tons of room for all done in 16-17 minutes at most. with drawer style fryers breadcrumbs tend to get embedded in the teflon making it harder to clean over time and when the fan dies the whole unit is worthless. it is for those reasons I upgraded to a Gourmia GTF7600 after my old air fryer died. no doubt some spots are hard to reach when cleaning. but like a normal oven you don't need to clean it very often unless you make really messy foods on a regular basis. as for the basket a grill brush can get the job done to a reasonable level with little effort but a good pressure washer will be needed if you want perfection. another thing to note is that the wings made in this video are not done correctly if you want results close to what oil frying can give you need to render the fat and you can't do that in any fryer without elevating the wings. because the fat will pool under the wing making one side soggy and then start smoking long before the wings are cooked. the trick for a toaster oven/airfryer is to buy a 12.5inch tray+rack combo and bend the edges a little so it slides in then add a little water to the tray to keep the fat from burning. you also need aluminum free baking powder+salt to draw out moisture and give it that nice wing flavor.

I just returned a Ninja toaster oven air fryer, it didn’t get very hot… but it had non-stick ceramic baking trays, and the manual recommended putting one of the trays on the bottom 4th rack when air frying to catch drips. I think a pan like that, or something like aluminum foil or a reusable silicone baking mat (IDK check that the silicone is rated for 450°F) could save some cleaning woes.

Re the chicken wings: you don't have to put them in a single layer. The irregular shape of them means that you can dump a whole lot into the air fryer and the air will still circulate really well. I usually full the basket to the top, and give the wings a shake halfway through the cooking time.

@@christyxy702 I'd go more by volume than weight because they need to fit in your air fryer. Given that 1lb is about 450g, I'm sure I could cook that amount in my Philips air fryer. I used to have a smaller Philips, but now I've got a Philips XXL.
The only time you would have to put wings in single layers would be if you were using a relatively wet batter/crumb coating that might rub off before it cooks. If I'm using a plain flour/baking soda coating, or just a marinade, then I just chuck the wings in to the basket's Max fill line.

Some of these foods had to relearn how to, for example; had cinnamon rolls in 8” round pan , but the top was over cooked. 2nd time around , half way through baking turn the rolls over and finish baking. A small correction: the $400 Breville model they recommend is actually called the Smart Oven Air Fryer "Pro". That's what the link in their description takes you to. Breville also makes a smaller $350 version called the "Smart Oven Air Fryer". If you have a limited amount of counter space, I suggest that you look up the dimensions of both models before you buy -- in our kitchen, the Pro would have been too large for the intended space. Also note that the smaller version lacks a couple of presets ("Dehydrate" and "Proof").

I had the smaller Philips Airfryer and loved it but wanted more capacity. So when I saw your top rated large air Airfryer was by Instant I decided to try It out. It does a fantastic job, but there is one thing I hate about it that makes it less safe to use. The tray falls out when you try to dump your food out which can lead to burned hands, so you have to hold it in place with tongs while you dump, or grab all the food a little at a time with the tongs. Also the holes are so wide some stuff falls through. The Philips uses a basket that’s attached to the handle so you can just dump out your food in one easy motion. Doesn’t sound like a big deal unless you want to toss your food with other ingredients partway through cooking as I often do. Also the bottom of the Philips basket is a smaller mesh, so fried and green beans don’t fall through.

For messy items like chicken there's a proper non stick roasting tray that it comes with - you see it in the video below the air fryer basket but she didn't use it which is why it made such a mess. It's very weird that the video spent ages showing off one air fryer but only showed the negatives of the toaster oven one - which is actually much better value over time as it can cook a full size cake, pizza or other meals that would normally require a oven.

I have one, too, and I love it. I don't call it a toaster oven - it's a small oven. I can fit a 9" X 13" pan in it if it doesn't have big handles on the sides. It's great on Thanksgiving if you need to cook 2 things (or more) at different temperatures. I've cooked cookies, biscuits, popovers, muffins, pizza, fish, chicken - pretty much everything in it.

I have had the Breville smart convection oven for the last 10 years. I use it daily and it's still going strong. I also got the air fryer (PowerXL vortex). I love how fast it is. But I'm noticing how much counter space they are taking up. I think the mess is turning me off of combining. Plus, occasionally, we use both devices at the same time. I never use my regular oven unless it's turkey day. Still, I will wonder.

  • @uweschroeder

I've got one of the toaster oven combinations and I love it - with a few caveats like cleaning and in my case a manufacturer that does not provide spare parts, which will make me go to a different brand next time.
That said, it's a perfect replacement for the large oven I have in my kitchen. I have a shelf in the garage with small appliances, so they don't clutter up the kitchen. I almost never use a microwave, so it's in the garage. The little toaster oven is in the garage too and that's a good thing: we live in the south, so it's hot. Being able to keep the house cool while still using an oven is great, plus if you do airfry or roast an entire chicken you leave the smell in the garage too. Since I got that toaster oven I rarely use my big oven for anything other than pizza and bread where you need the size and for the bread I can select steam injection for the perfect crust - a function a toster oven doesn't have. For a two person household like ours the investment into a $400 toaster oven is definitely worth it in my book. It's also a time-saver. My large oven takes half an hour to preheat, the toaster oven goes to 400 in about 90 seconds.
I don't use multiple layers in the oven though. Although convection I found that there is a difference between the levels and therefor I just use one tray (which is enough for 2 people anyways).

A couple of years ago, we were in between homes after selling our old one and before our new one was finished being built. We stayed for those couple of months in a rental cabin that didn't have an oven, so bought the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, and loved it so much that we use it in our new home. I use it to toast, bake small amounts of foods and also proof my bread before baking. I used it in the rental to bake full loaves of bread; it was a tight fit but it worked okay. I don't use it for that anymore as my regular oven does that job, but I still use it to proof my bread. I haven't used it as an air fryer, although the mesh rack is in one of my cabinets, as I wasn't sure it would do a decent job there. I was glad to see this video on that function, although the clean-up might be a pain, so if I do try the air fry function, I will likely do something not so messy. Thanks for the info-it was helpful!

Stuff splatters everywhere, and even with the removable tray and bottom access panel, it difficult to clean due to the heating elements on top and bottom. I still gett the full benefit of the air fryer and a huge advantage of a basket and non-stick racks, which I use almost exclusively. I bake bread in it. We use it more than our standard oven. I wish I could find out if the different settings do anything different with the heating elements. Bake, Cookies, Pizza, Roast. It does remember the previous settings, but any other differences? The one big improvement they can make, and I let Breville know, make the rack front and back bars offset. One on top of the rack and one below. Getting hot items off the rack in the lower position can be a challenge. I had a problem after several months with the item selector and Breville set me a replacement with a few days and prepaid return shipping. It does not get better.

Don't get fooled by judging an air fyer capacity by just the volume size. Some air fyers are narrow but deep which gives you a small base to spread out your food to maximize useable cooking area. Look for a basket that is square with the widest base which will give you the most cooking surface so you can spread out food for better crisping and even cooking. A basket that is narrow and deep is useless if you have to stack food then nothing cooks evenly and does not crisp up properly and also it will be difficult to get a spatula or something in there to flip foods.
The other thing is that even with the largest capacity baskets available, air fryers are not the ideal thing to use for cooking for more than two or three people at a time if you plan to cook like a whole meal like a meat, and a couple of sides for several people because it would take forever to cook everything if you had to wait for one dish to cook, then another and so on and even longer if you had to cook in batches. I like my air fryer but I have had times I have been slaving for several hours just cooking batches of something when i could of just spent an hour by using the oven or splitting the cooking by cooking certain things in the air fryer and using the stove to cook something else at the same time. Sure the air fryer may cook some things faster but if you have to do several batches instead of one in the oven then it will actually take you longer. It'll take about an average of about 20 minutes to cook most things and let's say about about 5 minutes to unload one batch and to load another. So imagine how long it will take you if you have to cook a large amount. So for about 3-4 light eaters and one main and one side it'll work. For big eaters or cooking for a party? Use your stove or oven.

    • @michaelholbrook4401

I never used it for the air fryer because it dripped all over the burners and smoked up the house. The instructions never said to put a pan underneath the fryer basket, and I thought putting a pan underneath would impede the frying aspect. Even the instructions don't instruct putting a pan in. I have been a proponent of air fryers/convection oven fir years until the printed temperature dial numbers just wore off and I could no longer accurately use my last one. So, checking for the best reviews, I chose my current one which is just as good if not better. It cooks anything and everything, it dehydrates to toasting, importantly it has a small footprint. Those vertical lids took up so much space in a small kitchen. All you need is an oven liner at the base if you use the mesh trays. I only ever use one layer at a time, which is the principle of the original air fryer and it is truly excellent. I think you’re biased against these type of air fryer.
