    The new F-150 LIghtning EV is one of the most hotly anticipated trucks of all time. On the one hand, it's one of the largest battery packs ever sold to consumers for any reason, able to power not only regular electronics, cookware, and computers, but also industrial-grade power tools, while putting down scorching acceleration numbers with decent range! On the other hand, it's just an F-150! Not everyone wants a futuristic egg or post-apocalyptic Total Recall movie prop - some folks want a usable truck that's kinda like what they already have, just electric! Zack and Matt spend a week in Colorado with the F150 lightning learning everything there is to know about it and came away super impressed!
    Ford provided the vehicle and insurance for this video .

    I got mine a couple weeks back (Lariat extended range) and have been using it to move to a new house ~40 miles away, pulling a 6x10 trailer. It's my third F-150 and 13th Ford truck. I also own a Tesla Model 3. Ford did a really great job with their first crack at an electric truck and I'm super happy with mine.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is going to be the truck people want. Mainly because it looks like a regular truck and is competitively priced against any other truck. And it's probably going to attract more first time truck buyers than anything.

    I just love all the power hookups for a race track service vehicle. Wouldn't need to bring a generator just to charge impacts and run lights at a night time rally service. Could actually power high power electronics as well since the included inverter on my F150 is a ~400w unit as well. But yeah, I didn't think about the difficulty of charging at charging stations with a trailer. It might not be as much of a pain to disconnect a small car/boat trailer. But if you're doing something like an RV or longer enclosed trailer that can be an issue to disconnect and charge. Even a pull through station would cause issues of blocking charging ports for others. Are there extensions for charging cables? Or is that an issue of power losses over the gage of charging cable?

      Will someone allow for vehicle to load, though? A PHEV pack should be find for that, but you need to arrive at a camp/construction sight with full battery and some gas left, for comfort.
      It makes sense to split the drivertrain front-back, but you can more easily get full regen from the front axle. Especially when your hybrid side is not shy with peak regen power. You don't want a drive shaft to the back, though.
      In the Koenigsegg Gemera hybrid, they did put the engine on the opposite end from its driven axle, but the engine is back, driving the front wheels only. They stuck electric motors on both axles, though, their hybrid battery definitely is not shy for power. Motors are not THAT expensive, one might slap one on the engine as well, get front axle regen AND superb traction, AWD EV-only mode crawling (you know you want it) and then perhaps drop some weight from the tranny as you're going to be e-assisted for torque most all of the time anyway. The Koenigsegg Gemera doesn't have more than one gear and a torque converter. This really might work fine in a diesel truck. Reduce top speed to like 105 mph and you'll have plenty off the line oomph with a torque converter.

      TFL did a test towing a 6,000 pound toy hauler trailer that was empty, their brand new Ford Lightening with the extended range battery could only go 86 miles before they had to stop and recharge it, that was from a 100% full charge starting off and when they reached the charging station they were down to just 9% battery charge left. This is what the electric vehicle crowd never want to talk about.
      Out of spec did a test towing a U-Haul flat bed trailer with a water tote strapped in it, they spent 19 hours driving from one charging station to the other and would only charge enough to get them to the next charging station.

    If you're going to purchase a lightning why not purchase the trim that has everything included. With all the other trims with the available options you're in the low 80's and you still haven't got everything that the platinum has. At 72 I doubt if I'll be purchasing another vehicle. And with our dollar depreciating right in front of our eyes, what better place to put your money as an investment. I'm purchasing mine at MSRP. As I call around for comparisons, nearly all dealers I've spoken with tell me they will sell their mannequin after they've had it for 6 months, that's a 6 month old vehicle with possibly 8000+ miles and 6 months off the warranty, GET THIS, most say they will be selling their mannequin at $20k over MSRP. So I figure this isn't like any other new vehicle I've purchased, where the moment I drive it off the lot it loses at least $2k of its value. Not this one, off the lot, the value increases $20k - $40k. Probably the best investment I've ever made.

      We really need to see what a bottom of the barrel Lightning can do, against a similar price (say over 3 years to run) regular F150 or any competing truck. Providing they get the EV stuff on this right, maintenance of powertrain and brakes should be a breeze compared to a gas truck. If you can fill up on home electricity most days and only hit fast chargers on 200+ mile days (how many a year does one get?), you're saving a lot va gas in the "great reset" world where you're not supposed to have nice stuff, or even food.

    I love our Teslas, but I'm really excited about what Ford is doing. Biggest plus of the Teslas is we're getting great longevity from the batteries, unlike our Nissan Leafs. If Ford and others can make a battery that lasts 200,000 miles or more, that's great news for widespread adoption.

    • @joemcdonough7509
      @joemcdonough7509 Год назад

      As a Tesla owner, I also feel this is the best all around EV you can buy on the market. I'm not even a fan of big trucks, but this one wows me. I believe the key to long term battery life is keeping the temps regulated via active cooling systems, and maintaining battery charges between 20-80%. That's why I am a firm believer in spending the extra money in getting the largest battery pack, and rarely go outside that charge range.
      I keep my 2015 Model S battery state between 45-60% at almost all times. That is plenty of range to do my daily errands and still not have to worry if the vehicle sits for days within that range. Lithium batteries are at its lowest stress point when it's near 50%. 7 years in, the motor/battery have been rock solid reliable, with a loss of 12% of its original capacity. Even with that loss, I can count on my fingers the number of times I've had range anxiety. With new superchargers popping up every year, that anxiety gets less and less over time. When I bought the car 3 years ago, I had to drive 45 minutes to get to a supercharger, now there's one 10 minutes from my house.
      Just don't ask me about the endless rattles and fit/finish, that's a major problem that still exists today with Tesla.

    The Lightning is 1 second slower than a Rivian and that's "a little slower". But it's 1 second faster than a Raptor which is a "ton faster". 😂 1 second is a HUGE gap. Second statement is correct.

      @pkennethv Год назад +1

      I actually do agree with you and am not trying to debate your point. I am gonna cut Matt some slack here and guess that he's speaking from the way it "feels" because the "1 second" difference between the Rivian vs Lightning is electric vs electric, whereas the Lightning vs Raptor is electric vs ICE, and electric cars tend to feel a lot faster than an ICE with identical performance numbers "in real life" (i.e. non-launch, non-track situations where you are not always in the ideal power band/gear of an ICE).
      I am not an electric car fanboy - my personal car is a BRZ (manual). That said, even a base Model Y "feels" faster driving on public roads (again, not track) than, say a 981 Boxter S (based on my own experience).

      There are SOO many people who tow their boat or camper to a place more than 50 mi from home, which is as far as you can go because almost no campsites/boat launches have EV chargers. If you live near NYC for example, the camping/hiking/boating areas in the Catskills are 2-4 hours away by highway. How far from LA are those canyons where this channel does its test drives?
