I remember watching this when it came out. I was a teenager and thought it was incredible. It still holds up after all these years. Kevin Bacon is beyond brilliant and boy do you hate him when you watch it
Agreed! I remember seeing this in theaters, where the audience were clapping during his death scene. Would consider that a testament to his performance.
I just saw this..and..wow, I'm truly at a loss for words. This movie is incredible & so engaging. If you're into movies like 'The Shawshank Redemption' , then this is for you or anyone that wants to watch a movie that will undoubtedly be worth their time.
This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The acting and cast of the scale. Sad though as it’s based on true events. This movie will stay with you forever and will be one of the greatest movies you will ever watch.
It was actually proven that the author made up the story. So it wasn’t true per se. But I think it’s still possible he experienced abuse and wrote a fictional story as a way to process it without revealing what really happened. Many people have done that. Either way, it’s something happening to kids everywhere, so in that way it accurately portrays that.
I’ve never seen it before but after seeing the cast when I read the description on hbo I made sure I recorded it on our DVR. Was about to watch it but being it’s thanksgiving today and it’s 2 1/2 hours long, I’ll have to watch it tonight when we get home. But looking forward to it since all the recent movies like in the last 3-4 years aren’t as good anymore. Everything has sucked big time! Covid ruined everything… or the writers and directors have just gotten horrible. Maybe it’s a combo of everything
If you havn't watched this film & are thinking of doing so I suggest you don't read my post it will probably ruin it for you. This movie left me shook the first time I watched it.. The ending scene is the most horrific. How all 4 boys are laughing at a table together as men now it seems a happy ending, but the abuse still haunts them & the fate that they all circum too all goes back to the abuse suffered.. No amount of revenge or triumph could ever mend the mental torture endured which lead to a life of crime & solitude.
Just to join in endless compliments after who-knows-how many times I've found myself glued to tv screen, watching unforgettable and uncomparable team of actors in one of the truly most underrated movie ever.
This is a true story so stop calling it fiction. Names, dates and places were changed, but the story is true. As a victim of abuse, I can vouch that you would not make up something like this. The Manhattan court system said that this trial never took place. That is because the trial didn't take place in Manhattan. I have no doubt that this story is true. N
Wendy Smith I believe it really happened but I can certainly see why the state of New York would deny it. One they would have to admit what was really going on at that school under their watch.. two they would have to acknowledge these guys were able to completely manipulate the legal system
It's not true. Lorenzo Carcaterra attended Sacred Heart in Hell's Kitchen but that's where the truth begins and ends. According to the school he was never absent for an extended period of time let alone the six months he claims in the book. So IF it did happen it did not involve him in anyway and was a story he most likely got from somewhere else, probably his imagination. Just because you are a victim of abuse does not mean you have to believe every story that comes along. You just want to believe it.
Patrick Morrissey I don’t care if they the story is true or not. It’s a film that highlights the fact that abuse does take place. Abuse is still happening everywhere even women who sleep with teenage boys is abuse. As a catholic I condemn the Vatican for still covering up the abuse children around the world have suffered and are still suffering. People need to wake up because almost everyone I know has been through some sexual abuse.
Lucas true I wanted all of them together again but sadly the ending had a more realistic approach . When dealing with that type of trauma there’s bound to be sadness in the end
Kevin Bacon was a sick bad man, though. He is a versatile actor, for sure. He certainly protrayed this charector well. I was ready to cause harm to him. When actors can play these roles, that's got to be hard, to get into that kind of mindset.

This book and movie reminds me... power can be dangerous in peoples hands. I notice, not all but a lot of priests, cops and people like that etc. tend to turn evil with power and abuse their authority. Its like they become Godlike because of the control they are allowed to have, ironically making them probably the most dangerous people. Humans also tend to have a sheep-like mentality and can be very dangerous in groups, in this case a group of gaurds. It adds to the power to over-power others.
This movie has a lesson on dealing or understanding peer pressure. I remembered back in high school and the teacher recommended us to watch this movie.
