That the discoverers of the Domus Aurea felt they were in a "grotto'" and from that came, more or less, the word grotesque, first for the style that you showed, and then for the continued use of that word (for better or worse) absolutely FLOORS ME! It's like a huge, significant piece of knowledge was finally plugged in. Not to mention the relationship of Fabullus with Pompeii and maybe even Oplontis and Herculaneum, but also the Renaissance artists starting with Rafael. Well, I am impressed with the excellent narratives I have heard from you, in this video, and in my original viewing of the NeoPythagorean Basilica you recently published. VERY COOL, Elyssa! Very cool! Thanks!
Thanks so much for your kind compliments. I'm glad you are enjoying some of my videos. I love all this Ancient Roman history, if you haven't noticed, and I love sharing it! I agree, I think the story of the Domus Aurea is really fascinating, not to mention, fundamental for understanding Renaissance art! In fact, so much of what we love about art and architecture today can be traced back to the Ancient Romans! Truly astounding. Thanks for taking the time to let me know you enjoy the content!
Excellent!! I actually went on a tour inside the Domus, but never saw all that you show here, ended up with a brainless tour "guide", and learned nothing. I wished I had seen this before the visit!
@@Romewise Really, the very best on youtube. i ve been there, but i didnt even see what you show! you got good eyes for art and architecture. i just got good eyes for i dont know what
Wow. I'm writing my master thesis on the Domus Aurea and you managed to show wall paintings I had never seen before in my research. And saying the painter's name was Fabulous ... I mean, it's a nice joke, but it's not pronounced like that.
Every time I visit the Domus Aurea, they have new things to see (and sometimes things we saw previously are no longer available), as they are constantly working on it, as I am sure you know! Yes, I know that is not how Fabulus' name was pronounced but I think it makes it easy to remember, so I took a little poetic license. :) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on my video!
Thanks so much for letting me know! That's a great idea for a new video. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, I have a page about this on the website. I talk about getting tickets there: www.romewise.com/domus-aurea.html
I wanted to let you know, I’m currently in Rome (spending twelve days here doing a deep dive), used your information and saw the Domus Aurea with the virtual reality goggles. It was absolutely fantastic and I’m so happy you provided this information! Thanks so much!
Enjoy your content but I have a suggestion I hope you’ll consider. While the printed captions you bring add helpful information and detail, they are rarely left onscreen long enough to be read in a relaxed manner. And even when I speed up my reading to get through the info, there is no chance to see what is showing onscreen at that time. Slowing things down quite a bit when the captions are being used would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much! I do not consider myself an expert at making videos and I would love to do the best I can for my viewers so I truly appreciate the very helpful suggestions. I will work on this! Thanks a lot for taking the time to let me know what I can do to make my videos better.
Thank you so much. I am not a licensed tour guide so cannot provide tours. We do offer trip planning as a paid service. We can help you research and book tours, hotels, restaurants, etc. If you are interested, please write us at alessandro@romewise.com.
This was amazing but remember that the temperature inside is a lot cooler than outside. Even on the hottest Rome day you'll need a jacket or sweater at least when you go in.
Thanks for watching. Yes, you should book this in advance. Space is limited and they usually book to capacity. Consider they only go 3 days a week, and they only allow so many people inside at a time. It's also very popular so the bottom line is, you should book in advance.
Thanks Elyssa for your reply. Are we able to buy tickets direct or do we need to purchase tickets through a third party? Or do you recommend the RomaPass?
@@wherethepaddletakesme You can try to buy them directly but if you don't find availability, you can use a reliable third party. I have pages about all this on the website: www.romewise.com/domus-aurea.html www.romewise.com/roma-pass.html Hope that helps!
The Domus Aurea was enormous and once took up land on several of Rome's hills - the Caelian, Esquiline, and Palatine. Currently, the part that is visitable is on the Caelian Hill, bordering on the Esquiline. Its entrance is not far from the Colosseum, on the opposite side from the Arch of Constantine.
@@Romewise Looking back, Vespatian should've kept the Domus Aurea and built the Colloseum somewhere else. I do agree that the statue was a bit much and had to be amended after his death.
Grazie per aver guardato il mio video, Giuseppe. Non capisco il tuo commento - a quale parte lunga ti riferisci? Grazie ancora e spero ti sia piaciuto il video!
Good but tour guide is hopeless, talked too quick, hard to hear, and one of the worst English accents is almost impossible to understand. Audio guides would be better.
Unfortunately, sometimes a guide can be hard to understand. It really just depends on who you get. I've had some wonderful guides at the Domus Aurea, but I once did have a guide like you described. It's still such an amazing place and even with a guide who is less than ideal, I enjoy the history and the space itself.
I didn't know about the Domus Aurea in Italy.. so amazing!! Learning on the architecture and its concept of "golden mean" from Greek Philosophy of Aristotle, so many lessons and awakening have swiftly reached me. Obviously I'm moved and encouraged to study more of this. cf. NHK黄金宮殿『黄金の中庸』- Oh God..♡

Yes it did!
Don't forget that no matter how hot it is outside it is chilly inside the ruins so bring a light sweater or jacket.

Where exactly is this? Is it on the Palatine Hill or across the road from the Colloseum or next to the Baths of Caracalla? 🤔 🏰 🏞

Nero's bath Tub
It may have been a park for Roman citizens
If you mean Nero's Domus Aurea, it's widely believed it was jut a huge party palace for the emperor himself.
