I used to listen to The Residents with my friends 40 years ago in Mexico City. Great band, I can't belive they're still touring the world after 53 years of being on the scene!
Huge fan from my teenage years to my late twenties. Seen them live several times in different parts of the world. The last time I saw them was with a friend who was also a fan, and at one point during the concert we looked at each other and both said: This just isn't very good is it? Details aside, they were mere shadows of a project that broke ground and influenced so many artists. This is already a couple decades ago by now. I haven't seen them since. They should have quit while the going was good, like so many in the biz. Oh well, we still have the early stuff to look back on.
@@QualeQualesonI hear ya, but as a 33 year old who's never seen them, id love to see them even if they are a shell of their former selves, just to see legends. Also that's awesome that y'all saw them several times when they were still jumpin.
So, get this: I just watched a clip about the weirdest bands of all time. Marilyn Manson and Insane Clown Posse were on the list. The Residents were not.
These guys are a trip. I'll never be the same after a teenaged mushroom trip to the Not Available, Freakshow, & Eskimo albums. Eskimo sent me out the door for some fresh air & the inspiration to schedule an appointment with a licensed mental health counselor.
The reason most people like this is that it's unique, if hundreds of bands did this the residents wouldn't be popular, but they are because there's limited choice when it comes to artistic music.
I've been watching Residents videos on RUclips for the past 15 min. This is my first exposure to them and I can already say that this is the craziest shit i've ever seen.
I love how they underlined the melody of James, this shows true love, they always considered James Brown as their top inspiration... where would the world be without the residents
A video like this seems to speak to circa 1980s MTV. I do not mean this as an insult. They are working with the visual language of music videos just like they are working with pop standards. The video is not just a parody, it works on a kind of bizarre level, beyond the "originals" they seem to parody. But MTV would not touch this stuff really. MTV was trying to construct a format. The Residents were trying to play with such format to create sometimes disturbing and original images, visual and sound images. Equals E is still one of their most engaging national histories of pop.
+geinikan1kan The rez were not really visible on mtv that much......they were on late night music shows like Rage tv , Bohemia after-dark and on Canada's much music semi often in the 80's and early 90's.
Daniel Tittyfish Oh I know the residents were not regular MTV fare. I said they were "speaking to" MTV. This early music video stuff was definitely aware of MTV, engaging with similar vocabulary, but in parodic and satirical ways.
@@stinkybojangles4128 Claypool integrated the weirdness into a high concept and agreeable format of The Residents. He just gets it in his way. Special guy.

"That blue guy" means no harm to you or anyone else. The only person causing harm is YOU my good sir. You are being intolerant of other's cultures. So what if he likes to make faces and be blue? What gives you the authority to judge based on skin color and facial expressions alone?
I have been a fan of The Residents for some time and was glad to find all these videos online which I have not seen since the days of USA's Night Flight.
i will always be gratefull to my best friends dad for having all the res albums to date when i was a kid so the residents have allwys been a fave. before i got a comp it was hard to find other fans, now...........
My old girlfriend died today and I dedicate this song to her. Don't know if she liked the Residents but I love them. It's like a musical Twilight Zone episode.

The intelligent and culturally sophisticated type, the kind that hang out in a city's art scene and who has a fabulous sense of style and class. This music is the bane to 'fist pumpers' and individuals who listen to whatever is most popular, or simply what their friends have. The Residents have been doing this for 40 years, they must be doing something right, most of the bands you listen to I am guessing will be lucky to hit one decade.

Deen Brown, The Residents made more than 60 LP's so that's a very hard question to answer. However, looking at the date this first post was sent I am assuming you already know the answer. However, check out the album "The Tunes of Two Cities". This has a fantastic long version of "Its a Man's World" then go deeper into the Residents back catalogue. "The Residents are many things. Dull isn't one of them."---From the original Rolling Stone Album Guide.
They got a lot of ink in Rolling Stone for such an odd band.
Great work digging peeps
Rolling Stone is SHIT, just like this.
RIP Hardy Fox, you will be missed :(
Hung out with him and Eric Drew Feldman at Residents Headquarters one Sunny San Francisco Afternoon.
Hardy. True genious. Respect
I played this on my radio show today.
