Thew: "In all means qualitative this guy is crap but I like his vibe" That's what I like about Thew. He genuinely enjoys toys; not as a collector but as someone who really does like the escapism inherent to play.
For this video its more like "this guy is ok" lol. Imo Earthrise Ironhide was actually one of my favs. I was surprised that I played it more often than Prowl, which I initially liked more from the pictures. It's still very much flawed, but the joints were very sturdy and feels nice, unlike Siege which were floppy for me. I guess that, and it having pretty cool sculpt, made me really like the guy
It's absolutely crazy how difficult the Earthrise versions of Ironhide and Ratchet were to get. Making them Amazon exclusives was dumb enough, but the craziest part is how a ton of these sets may actually have ended up at the bottom of the ocean. If you aren't aware: Around the time these sets were to release, a massive storm caused a cargo ship to lose a ton of their containers overboard, and Hasbro was among the companies whose products were on that ship. Seems to have been what caused a bunch of the orders ( the Ratchet set in particular seemed to have been affected the most) to get cancelled, and thus the bullshit prices seen in the video. It's also probably why the rumored Studio Series 86 versions are coming as soon as they are.
@DropkicktheDecepticon It was never confirmed what precisely was lost, just speculation based on what was known about whose products were on the ship combined with the fact that many people's pre-orders were canceled for both sets (again moreso the one with Ratchet). This was not an intentional dumping into the ocean. None of the companies whose product went into the ocean gained anything from this, only losses. The shipping company took losses too, because the boat was pretty damaged as well, IIRC. The only people who gained anything are third party resellers who got lucky enough to get their product and subsequently used the resulting scarcity to squeeze as much as possible from the people wanting the sets.
never an autobot dashboard, or a piaggio apecar transformer. with some of the "eccentricities" with the unicron trilogy and the film-inspired-toy, I am still baffled
You just had to make a suggestion to call him Van Guard, and then my GoBot-repurpose-addled brain suddenly craved this... thing. Thank you once again, Thew, for being the extra weight that tipped the scales in a toy's favor.
See, I think the opposite happened. I think that Siege didn't necessarily have the intent of selling an Earth mode one later, as much as the Earthrise figure was rushed and basically used the Seige tooling as much as possible in order to cut corners and get something out faster.
A lot of ER feels underbaked, especially the characters who had previously had siege toys. Primes legs are noticably the exact same on the ER mold but because of the changes they work different and look worse, and then theres starscream who... ok ER screamer is fine, he is basically the generations one in voyager size, but the siege one is just better? like he poses better, he looks better, he feels better, he has springloaded gapfillers. hell it goes further with stuff like grapple breaking itself. ER was very clearly (in my mind) forced out the door to appease people who didnt like the cybertronian style of siege. it did have some good figures, but the whole deal felt... half done.
It's kind of the apex of the current "no bio information or story" pattern of Generations toys that they didn't even bother to give this poor bastard a name.
Thew's beautiful speech at the end could very easily be a joke in a Studio Series Ironhide review if the rumored Voyager ends up being true, and also very very good (like SS Hot Rod good). lol Great vid man!
There's a 3D printed upgrade for the feet replace them with actual doors for the back of the vehicle mode you can probably find on eBay or the Lazy eyebrow reviewer
Mentioning Movie Ratchet does make me wonder if they'll do movie bots in Legacy. Would be kinda neat to have a few movie designs uncluttered and given that Generations look. I think the perfect Ironhide I'm after would be Masterpiece style around the complexity of Reboost/Skids. Like, a bit swish and fancy but less than £75.
Siege - "Hey look what we can and could do!" Earthrise - "ok we got their money let's actually do what they want.' (but make it harder to get) Kigndom - "um, well, we got beast wars?"

Thew talking about collecting as a journey is like, the most applicable to life philosophy I've ever heard on this website and it's coming from a Transformers review channel
Honestly as I look back I start to realize how "meh" I am on some aspects of Earthrise. Fully original molds like Doubledealer and the criminally overlooked Snapdragon were great but a lot of the redos of siege figures in earth mode were a lot more mixed. While not a remold, the ER Seeker mold is great but loses out on so much articulation compared to siege. ER Prime was supposed to be a slam dunk but for all his improvements comes out worse when it comes to proportions, leaving him still probably the stronger figure, but only just. I didn't even bother with ER Megatron after picking up the Netflix version of the siege mold. With Ironhide and Ratchet specifically we go from these sleek but heavy duty armored looking vehicles to the dumpiest vans and it just feels like while ER is more accurate to the characters as they were, maybe siege more thoroughly nailed who they are now. ER Ironhide even had to swap out the most perfect weapon ever made for Ironhide for a dinky pistol and a parts-forming shield. It all probably has something to do with my growing up with the Unicron trilogy, so these characters having vehicle modes that are "What if earth vehicle but sci-fi?" is something that vibes with me more considering Energon and Cybertron. Either way as much as people carry Earthrise around as "what you actually wanted from siege" it didn't quite hit that for me when revisiting characters from siege.
Yes, Snapdragon is def really solid, just not a lot of ppl cares about the character (not surprising). I actually surprised that I like Apeface as well once I got it in-hand. Ah, a wordy Thew review, just what I needed after a long day. I really hope 86 Ironhide is finally going to be our definitive Ironhide, ER is okay, but its definitely not perfect.
I'm glad someone remembers Download, I got spotlight hotrod from a book fair as a kid and thought he was just the coolest, I was surprised they never used Cybertron Scattorshot (final form) for a retool
Honestly after the A-Team reference I'm sure with all these crossovers like Back to the Future and Top Gun they're probably going to remold this guy into the A-Team van I mean he's already in his robot mode sporting kind of a mohawk like the B.A. Baracus character.
I stopped collecting in 2008 when I realized I was just looking for perfection. Each new toy was shy of that ideal toy I was searching for, do I couldn't enjoy each toy on its own. Since I came back in 2008, I've been sure to appreciate each toy on its own merits. Legacy Arcee disappointed me at first, but I'm starting to dig her now. Not a perfect toy, but it's okay.
DK-2 is a reference to Takara's 1983 attempt to bring the Diaclone molds to the US market. The black vanette was released as DK-2 in that line. It also included the red version of the Sunstreaker mold (DK-1) and a blue version of the Trailbreaker mold (DK-3). As well as the Powerdasher molds and the Guts Blocker Diaclone mold.
I'm so happy you're a reviewer in the UK, struggling with the same availability woes as the rest of us. Also "I'm Thew, I get everything" gave me a proper laugh!
from what I've seen they really were doing cybertron modes before the fan reactions, proof of that is the fact that the siege figure feel complete and well designed, where the remolds into earth modes feel off and forced, to me they switched mid point and it went not as great as they probably would have wanted. Siege definitely came first in the design table
Excellent review! Thank you! Yeah, so far, the only Ironhide I've felt really approaches Satisfactory isn't even an Ironhide -- it's iGear's Weapons Specialist. And right there with you on the ridiculous exclusivity of HALF OF ALL HASBRO'S PRODUCTS. Remember when we'd get a Deluxe CHUG Seeker repaint roughly once a quarter until all the main ones had been made, and the really obscure ones were the exclusives, instead of having a standard retail release Starscream, and ALL THE OTHER SEEKERS EVER were scramble-to-get-them exclusives released within three months of each other, sometimes in very expensive multi-packs? >Sigh
You realise now that you've made this video, there's a 100% chance that Hasbro are going to announce an absolutely perfect screen-accurate G1 Ironhide toy.
Magic Sqaure (MS) will likely save the day as they have been doing for me. They have a Ratchet in the pipeline somewhere. Scrapped my entire Masterpiece collection and went MS.
Wow! Great review! Luckily I work from home because there were less people to hear me barrel laugh out loud! I have him and I love him! It’s not perfect like you said and I agree with how you summed him up! Always so much fun watching you stuff! Thanks!
Retailer Exclusives are how a company says "I don't want your money and would rather make scalpers rich instead". I was lucky enough to get both Actual Ratchet and Actual Ironhide from ER, and a few upgrade kits later the Nissan Cherry twins look pretty spiffy in their alt modes. However, I do wonder at why Hasbro wants less money by making popular characters hard to get.
This Autobot is named Blackball. A former bouncer. When Delta Magnus sent him to Earth on a mission, he became enamoured of his Uncle Ironhide's earth mode and underwent a makeover by Teletraan. I consider the Quintesson Drone (with an autobot sticker) to be the Cybertronian mode of Blackball and this to be his earth mode.
Leakers have said that there is a brand new Ironhide and Ratchet coming for either Legacy or SS86 that aren't retools or repaints of the ER versions. So you can't give up just yet.
Holy fuck I hope so, maybe then they'll actually do something with the damn feet. That's the only thing I don't like about these molds (both Siege and ER), and it's bordering on an obsessive hatred. Like, with _everything_ they can do now, with all the cool shit they've done with him, they couldn't do _anything_ with the feet?
@@ChakatStripedfur Probably ran out of budget. And hey, if they do come out and aren't cancelled between when the leak was given and now, we can finally get an Ironhide/Ratchet mold that's not Legends scale that is better than "good enough".
Yeah getting the mold specifically as the Diaguy is a blessing. My first version was actually SG Ratchet who was disappointing just for how....barely different from a normal Ratchet he is. But DK-2 Guard def wears those colors well and he's NOT Ironhide or Ratchet so can't be as disappointed in it knowing it's not the actual characters. And of course writing this from the future SS Ratchethide now exists so you getting it like this is a blessing in disguise.
I was absolutely enthralled with Siege. then I kinda puttered out around earthrise, then somewhat back in for kingdom. molds like this that can easily just be described as "the same boy but with a long hat" perfectly describe why.
I feel really weird because I usually miss out on the cool exclusives, yet I managed to get Earthrise Ratchet and Ironhide in their respective sets via pre-order.
His shield weapon also homages Universe Ironhide's weapon. The weapon on that figure turned into a gun on one end and a blade on the other. This guy's shield has a pointed blade on one end and cannons (guns) on the other. The cannons even push out of the body a little, just like the gun on Universe Ironhide.
There's a couple of upgrade kits from nonnef productions that gives him stuff to make a more accurate battle platform and proper new feet that blend into the vehicle mode and better more earth styled wheels and all the kits come in color schemes that can fit all the variations of the earthrise/siege ratchet/Ironhide molds
Well, if the rumors are to be believed, the Studio Series 86 line is getting a Ratchet, which some people believe is either going to be a reissue of the Amazon exclusive Earthrise Ratchet, a heavy retool of that release to fix the issues the Earthrise one had, OR an all new mold with more accurate toon appearance...which of course would mean an Ironhide would probably follow afterwards.
I like the name Vanguard. Better than DK-2 Guard. Kinda reminds me of B-127. Anyways, I liberated my Deseeus Drone and made him into Download. Made some cosmetic changes to my Earthrise Ironhide and Ratchet so they're about as close to perfect as I'm going to get.
"If Earthrise came out first, nobody would've bought Siege" As the resident Siege Simp; I can safely confirm that in this scenario, I would happily sell all my Earthrise figures to replace them with Siege ones Earth modes are boring, and will be done several hundred times Cybertron modes are unique and interesting, and are made very rarely
I felt the same way. I've always enjoyed the Cybertron modes, and loved getting so many characters that I like in Cybertron mode. And I loved the "Buzzworthy Bumbleblee Origin Bumblebee," but I still want my box-van-style Wheeljack to match.

And hey, if they do come out and aren't cancelled between when the leak was given and now, we can finally get an Ironhide/Ratchet mold that's not Legends scale that is better than "good enough".
Thew giving motivational speech at the end really gets me moving.
(oh no here comes the water works...)
DK stands for Donkey Kong :>
Vanguard needs to become canon. Someone start a petition.
I'm now getting one just to call Vanguard, I don't care how cheesy it is... I love the name.
Selects really has been sucker for Diaclone.
Case no one hasn't mentioned: DK-2 Guard's name is from American's imported Diaclone line, Diakron.
Seeing ANY reference to apeface just makes me so happy man
Wasn’t too into the Earthrise Ironhide mold but this color scheme looks awesome!
"I'm Thew and I get everything...!"
You're not wrong, mate...
Glad I picked up the SIEGE Ironhide mold up as Crosshairs, makes it feel not redundant in my collection.
Revisited this video, always liked this one. Great job!
Name him Blackbox. Just to piss off pilots.
And they did it again. ER Prime. Legacy Skids. And now SS86 Ironhide.
Thew... What do you know?
OHHHH, DK 2 stands for Diaclone #2! That’s kinda funny, cool, and obvious all at the same time. I’m here for it
I love your Abraham Lincoln beard.
I was absolutely enthralled with Siege. then I kinda puttered out around earthrise, then somewhat back in for kingdom.
molds like this that can easily just be described as "the same boy but with a long hat" perfectly describe why.
Ahh another beautiful Thew video!!
Since the altform sort of looks like K.I.T.T., they could've called him Knight Hide
"I'm Thew! I get everything!" LOL.
And then along came Studio Series 86 Ironhide....
"Starts with a D, ends with a D, like a weekend with me"
Ok...that was...I just...I'm having trouble keeping my composure here. 😂🤣
The feet alone spawned it's own cottage industry.
"If Earthrise came out first, nobody would've bought Siege"
As the resident Siege Simp; I can safely confirm that in this scenario, I would happily sell all my Earthrise figures to replace them with Siege ones
Earth modes are boring, and will be done several hundred times
Cybertron modes are unique and interesting, and are made very rarely
I felt the same way. I've always enjoyed the Cybertron modes, and loved getting so many characters that I like in Cybertron mode. And I loved the "Buzzworthy Bumbleblee Origin Bumblebee," but I still want my box-van-style Wheeljack to match.
Since I can’t get the ER ironhide I’m gonna get this and just call it G2 ironhide
