It's a bit odd that this game was chosen to be localized, out of all the innumerable Dragon Quest clones... and then, only released in 1992 IIRC, when NES was on its way out essentially. Guess devs back then didn't have the benefit of hindsight and didn't know which ones were really good and worth localizing. As for this game... it's okay for what it is, it's perhaps one of the better FC JRPGs from 1989. Most of the music is good, has that Shadowgate vibe I like, and it's definitely streamlined and fairly short; also, at the very least it's not yet another 'Kill the dark lord.' kind of RPG. (it also 'kinda' makes sense why the setting is different, the ending explains just about everything)
Very peculiar game, to say the least. Music is nice (except for the battle theme), graphics are ok, the plot is decent, but the game progress is a bit dragging and dull. There's one big JRPG coming in 1989 which feels like a full-pledged cinematic game after the Ghost Lion.
I actually always liked this game, even though it's one of the most blatant of DQ ripoffs. It's kind of adorable, tries to at least do a few different things, and I appreciate it whenever you see a female protagonist in any American-localized game in the eighties.

Yeah, my first thought is that this was an odd game to localise. It does look pretty neat though, even if it's not one of the best RPGs on the system.
oh boy, this is a weird one...
but, well, technically they are BEYOND the pyramids.
This game actually does have pyramids. I saw a let’s play of it.
I REALLY think that Telenet SHOULD have done a Sega Genesis port of this game through their Wolf Team label.

huh so this one was based on a movie?! but otherwise yeah sounds like another dragon quest clone.
the only thing memorable about this game is the US cover art.
