I'll always remember this as the game Seanbaby hated most back in the late 90s. And the programmer even emailed him to let him know it wasn't that bad lol.
For a game that was called Deadly Towers in the North American release, I find it ironic that the towers that house each of the game's bosses are much easier than most of the rest of the game. I slogged through this one with a guide some years ago, and I feel like once you get some of the stronger equipment, the game actually becomes *somewhat* reasonable, but I realize I have a higher tolerance for this sort of thing than most people. I can imagine someone making a ROM hack of this that actually plays pretty well... the ingredients are there for something good (or good-ish), but it just doesn't quite come together.
Yeah the towers part of the game is kinda good especially once you have some equipment. The biggest flaws of the game are the endless dungeons with invisible entrances/exits and how weak your starting character is.
It happens from time to time. It's especially common when it's just the interface and the words needed are loanwords that Japanese players would understand; then it's easy to set up an international release.
There’s a good game hiding inside all of this jank. Except that’s true for at least 20% of the real ‘blah’ titles. “It has cool ideas but isn’t really coming together” On the other hand it’s like they got their combat working up to a point where it was functional and then went hog wild with the level design tools. Check out the maps in a players guide. Pure slog.

I don't think it's the worst thing on the Famicom, but that programmer was wrong.

Another one in my "boy this sure sounded better when I just read about it" list :D
