    wow--- the Telecaster analogy was perfect--it has all the dials, switches and necessary bits.. it just needs the hands of the user to make it work,,,

    I bought a G7 for the 4K/24p video and the bang for the buck. It's the best camera I've ever used and I highly recommend it.

      +Temporal Mix Productions Yes, a lot of bang for the buck - that exactly it.

      Just a quick question for you: My G7 must be set up for PAL instead of NTSC. How do you switch between the two so I can get 60 fps?

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Temporal Mix Productions No such facility I'm afraid. It comes set in the camera according to which region it was bought in. The only Micro Four Thirds that gives you the choice is the GH4 as far as I know.

    • @Temporalmixproductions
      @Temporalmixproductions 8 лет назад

      SHIT. So I'm stuck with 50 fps? That is very disappointing. I'll see if I can't reformat my camera somehow.

      +Temporal Mix Productions There's guy with a Russian name (I forget for the minute) who does firmware hacks. He seems really expert, might be worth a look at his work. Does anyone know him?

    G7 = Fender Telecaster. Great analogy. This is my first time watching your review of the G7 -- I purchased one about two months ago after extensive research. It's my first really "nice/serious" camera and I'm enjoying it immensly. Ironically enough, I own 3 Telecasters,.....hmmmm.....

    • @davidthorpe7732
      @davidthorpe7732 8 лет назад

      Obviously a character thing, then Billy! I just bought a Strat. Bit more fancy than a Tele but still a pretty down to earth instrument. Seriously, the G7 is a camera you _would_ buy after research because it is exceptional value for a camera with all the best attributes of the Panasonic range, the focusing and 4K and so. That's why i advised my friend to buy one. 3 Teles, eh? I'm impressed.

    • @billyhughes9776

      Strat, aaah,...very nice. Congrats. Yup, buying a nice guitar, in any quantity, is the easy part. Making them "sing" the way you want (and others would care to listen to) -- now that's impressive. BTW, I enjoy your reviews immensely.

    Thanks for your response. It seems to me that video shooters of the younger generation are relying on 4K shooting to allow them to be lazy, because of the ability to zoom in/re-compose without losing quality in full HD. I cut my photographic teeth using 35mm transparency film, so getting the framing correct BEFORE pressing the shutter release doesn't pose problems for me. It's a shame that getting it right first time (mostly) every time seems to be a thing of the past.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +2

      +Keith Spillett Technology can have the effect of de-skilling and as you say it throws up big differences in the way people operate. I see young shooters taking fifty, a hundred or more shots of a view whereas I rarely shoot more than a couple of frames. Like you, that's the discipline imposed by expensive and tricky light sensitive materials.
      I suppose you could argue that you are both selecting the best shot, one by taking every possible shot and selecting afterwards, the other by selecting it on the spot. I prefer my way and I feel that you get the best results by shooting thoughtfully while you working. But digital has changed all that for many people and I suppose if you can take 1,000 picture at no extra cost to one, people are bound to do it.
      I wouldn't want to operate like some wedding photographers do now, apparently. One person wrote that he takes 5,000 shots on a given wedding. I'd say that even if you had the best shots you'd probably miss them among all the less good ones. But also, the time. It's so much quicker to self-edit on the job. After all, if you are any good, you won't miss the telling moments. But, times change and there's no stopping it.

      this is exactly how i want to learn, im doing my best to really learn and research everything rather than just jumping straight into a full frame which is what some of my friends have done .

      I would like to hear your opinion on what my options are for a good macro set-up. I have the Pany G7 (no in-body IS), but want the Oly 60mm f/2.8 macro lens (no IS). Pany's 30mm macro doesn't seem "long" enough for me because I like to get bugs and bees. What to do? Thanks!

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Linda McMullin I think that 45mm is an absolute minimum for macro, especially for anything with a sting! But for lighting as well. 60mm is better and probably about right for give and take work. Macro is much better done on a tripod for most subjects, given the accuracy of focusing necessary but you can't really do that with bugs.
      Professionally, people put them in the fridge (not freezer!) to slow them down and then photograph them, I believe. Other than that rather esoteric approach, I think I'd have to go with the Panasonic 45mm. Handheld macro magnifies any hand shake so stabilization is immensely helpful. Having said that, I have and always have had, shaky hands. If yours are steadier, maybe you could get away with the 60mm.

    Good review, your summery of the camera hits the nail pretty squarely, I too find it a very good tool to improve my skills. It's a very capable and for the price feature-filled camera, feels secure in my hands and takes great photos if skill permits. Since I started to use the electr. shutter more I barely go back to the physical one because I simply love 100% silent shooting, I can live with slight warping in moving objects in return. People must think I play pretend with a toy camera when they don't hear the focus beep or shutter click. Overall a much needed improvement over my old trusted velvety-red G1.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +1

      +2nd3rd1st Thanks! You've waited a while to change cameras and the G7 will be a nice big upgrade with as you are saying, plenty of new and very useful features. As said in the video, I recommended this one to my friends because with the sensible menu and control system and up to date features, it will enable them to learn photography on a camera that will be just as satisfying to an experienced user. Like you, I use the electronic shutter by default, though I like a quietish 'click' just to set my mind at rest!

    Great video, as usual. I think I really need one of these. I've become interested in m43 recently for much the same reasons as you have - I have a G5 with 14-45 and 45-200 lenses, plus a Sigma 19mm prime, which is an amazing piece of glass. I shoot a lot of video, and clients are beginning to demand 4K, though GOODNESS knows why because they haven't got the means to enjoy the full benefits. I can't run to a GH4, but the G7 seems to be the obvious choice for me.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Keith Spillett Thanks, Keith! For normal video requirements, I don't think the G7 is lacking in any way. The GH4 can meet more esoteric requirements but few is us need those (even fewer understand them, me included) which makes the G7 a great buy.
      Clients, they hear these buzz things and they want them without knowing why. Maybe just bragging rights - 'our new publicity vid is in 4k' - in the pub. It's their money, though :-)

    This is my next camera! Coming from a GH2, it'll be a familiar size and construction. Love the telecaster analogy by the way.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Jackson Kim Thanks! This'll be a very worthwhile jump from the GH2. I felt with the GH2 that that was the time when I could move all my photography over to Micro Four Thirds, a great camera and a big leap forward for the format. The G7 moves way on from that but in a workmanlike, practical way.

I really like your videos, you do an excellent job explaining things. I recently got the G7 and have been playing around with the kit lens. I appreciate your insight on the 14-140mm lens, I'll look into that option in the future.

      +Landscaping With Zach
      Hi, I just have to jump in to say that you would love the 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lens! It's the lens I chose when I bought the G7. Be sure to see David's video on it and you will see that the lens retains sharpness even at the long end, and I really like the bokeh you get from close-up shots...the background is beautiful!

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +2

      +Linda McMullin As I've said many, many times, without my knowing it the 14-140 shows up in Lightroom as my most used lens. I have faster ones and more expensive ones but the 14-140 is just so versatile without the sacrifice in image quality that you'd expect. If I compare the 14-140 at f/5.6/ 6.3 with any of my other lenses, there is no IQ difference to be seen. Which is why I always say that unless someone is going to use the f/2.8 aperture of the 'pro' zooms regularly, they don't have any advantage.

    I was looking forward to your review of the G7, I just received my one yesterday, so far I like it a lot. the missing feature I miss most is weather sealing but I knew this before I purchased. can't go wrong for 340gbp body only :)

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +1

      +supernova1976 Amazing price for such a piece of technology. The weather sealing, well something has to go for such a price. In really bad conditions, it's worth protecting the camera whether it is whether sealed or not. As I know from my years of motor-cycling, no matter what you pay, water will find a way in eventually.

    Very nice review. I found the G7 relatively inexpensive and a great way to start learning about the video side of things -- which I'm just doing with it now. While I would be a bit concerned about taking the G7 out in a heavy drizzle, the plastic body is very lightweight and it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of it (in the sunshine of course).

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +1

      +John Roberts It's certainly a great way to get to grips with video. Personally, even with a weather sealed camera, in wet conditions I keep the camera covered . Weather protection doesn't keep water off the lens's front glass!

  • @8thom00
    @8thom00 8 лет назад

    Thanks for the video David, thorough as usual and a pleasure to watch and hear. I've handled this camera the other day in a shop, and found its ergonomics superb. Plus the availability of five Fn buttons makes it highly customisable. A pity it's very plasticky, but that contains the price and it feels well built nonetheless. Sorry for the off topic question, but are you planning to review the Pen-F at some point? I'd like to know your opinion on the S-OVF function (simulated optical viewfinder), that apparently was introduced already in the EM10 mark II... it sounds promising but the fact I can't find much information on it through google probably means it hasn't sparked off big enthusiasms? :) Thanks!

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Giorgio Talocci Hi Giorgio - I picked up a Pen F this morning but haven't opened the box yet. Played with one in the shop and first impressions are of how solid and...well.metal. it feels.
      The S-OVF is pretty straightforward.Set to Off, if you apply a stop + exposure compensation, the EVF view shows the effect in action. So if you are photographing a scene with a tree in the middle and a there is a person sitting in the shade under the tree, you might set +1 exposure compensation. With S-OVF off, the person in the shade will show detail, while the surrounding scene will appear rather light, as it will appear in the final image. With S-OVF on the scene in the EVF won't change but the image will reflect the +1 compensation. In other words, the EVF is behaving like an optical DSLR viewfinder.
      Again, if you apply a starburst Art Filter from the menu, S-OVF off will show you the effect that the filter is having, a starburst around a street lamp, for example. S-OVF off will show you the straight scene, no starburst from the lamp.

    I think I'm going to buy this cam. I was considering the GX8 before, but frankly for video the G7 has everything. I know you don't shoot with those, but just curious, what do you think of the Samsung NX1 ?

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Philippe Orlando I'm a user of a lot of Samsung stuff but not cameras so I'm not a lot of help. Everything I've read about the the NX1 points a to a superb camera. My personal view would be that it goes a bit too far towards the bulky side of things, not the body but the lenses and you are limited to the lenses that Samsung produces. If I were going to a bigger sensor than Micro Four Thirds I'd probably go for the Sony FF.
      The fact remains that the Samsung is a great camera in its own right. One factor to consider would be that Samsung is pulling out of the UK camera market and possibly Europe, so it might be that development of new lenses and so on is halted. Re the GX8, as you say, the G7 does everything it does video wise and for video the 20mp sensor means nothing anyway.

    hey david! just a quick question. what lens did you recommend besides of this kit lens? how about the PL 25mm f1.4 or oly 25mm f 1.8? im using G7 mostly for video

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Gika Pradana If you want a high speed 25mm, don't forget Panasonic's f1.7. It's a good price. the 14-140mm Panasonic zoom is a great match, especially for video. All that zoom range without changing lenses and excellent stabilization too. Not so good in very low light, of course but I use mine at a blues club with low light with no problems. The 14-140 with a 25mm high speed as well would be a good pairing. If you're not shooting 4k, you can double the effective focal length of both these lenses without significant quality loss, using the Ex. Tele. Conv. in the Rec menu. A 50mm (100mm angle of view in FF) 2x tele with a f/1/7 aperture is high useful.

    Hi David, really enjoying your video reviews. I have a Lumix G7 and have the kit lens plus a couple of primes (42.5 f1.7 and a Rokinon 12mm manual). Couple of questions for you: (a) Have you considered doing one of your Kindle books for the G7's menu system? (b) Could you recommend a walk-about lens with a longer focal range that is an upgrade on the kit lens but that also handles video really well? Keep up the good work!

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Julian - I have a book on the G7 - it's amzn.to/2grix57 - (UK) or amzn.to/2g2LM0R - (USA). For a general purpose zoom, I'd recommend the 14-140mm Panasonic. I have a review of it. It covers almost everything and in spite of its 10x zoom range is sharp edge to edge and from one end of the zoom to the other. It will also focus like lightning on your G7. And it is designed with video in mind, so quiet in operation.

    I was hoping you would do a review on this camera. I just got one with the 14-140, but do mostly still photography and some video. All I hear about is how amazing the 4K video is, naturally I was concerned that perhaps I got the wrong camera for that. The images I have see and taken look fine to me and I love how the camera handles and feels in the hand. It just felt perfect in my rather small hands and the buttons and dials seem perfectly placed. For $850 with the 14-140 I thought would be a great starter camera to learn on. I like the size and weight. The only other camera that felt perfect in my hands was the Sony A7, but that was $1400 with 28-70 lens. After watching your video, I think I's do okay with G7. Thank you.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Jeff Robins Thanks Jeff. As I said in the video, I suggested that combo to some friends for the very reasons you put forward. It is as easy to use as such complex and versatile technology can be, everything falls to hand, logical menu system. Yet, it's not a combination that limits you and even a highly experienced photographer is unlikely to find it wanting. You'll enjoy it, I'm sure.

  • @Alanic123

    And another very good Review. Thanks for that! Now it is clear what camera I will buy. Though i am a bit scared to take the 14-140mm Kit-Lens because of the micro jitters when recording video. Did you notice something like that? If the jitters are there maybe the dual Kit Lens 14-42 + 45 - 150 is the better choice. What do you think about that topic?

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Alanic123 Thanks! I find this very difficult because I don't see any of that jitter. I've just shot two ten second sequences, both on a tripod, one with stabilization on, one off. Neither show any jitter at all. I'd normally shoot without stabilzation on a tripod, though it appears to make no difference.
      So, while I don't see it, I know that others do. I did see it on the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8, though as I recall a software upgrade cured it in my case. I wish I could be more help. If anyone else has more experience, it would be good to hear from you here.

      +Greg Thurtle Thanks Greg. It will be interesting to see what Panasonic plan with a GH5. I wouldn't have thought they would include body IS a while ago but now they have enabled dual IS with the GX8, it's hard to see how their flagship camera could be released with less good stabilization than the next camera in the pecking order.
      Dual C-AF would be interesting - Depth from Defocus combined with phase detection - wow!

I was leaning towards buying the sony, but I'm afraid, that it has some overheating issues and the last shots in your footage look really nice.
    what do you think? any advice?
    (I'm currently shooting with a canon 700d and the sigma art 18-35mm f/1.8. I really like the lens, so I will probably buy an adapter)

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Audio Viking The G7 is very versatile, a mini GH4 i many ways.The A6300 is excellent too. I haven't used the Sony but its video quality seems to be lacking which is certainly not the case with the G7.
      The Sigma lens will be manual operation on the G7 (or Sony) but for video that doesn't matter so much. You have a much wider choice of native lenses for Micro Four Thirds than the Sony, of course.

    I need some help! I have the G7 and bought your book "The Panasonic G& Menu System Simplified" but can't find this answer. On a tripod shooting stills I want to take the picture by touching the screen. I think it is possible but cannot find the answer in your book.Your book has been very helpful by the way.Thanks,David

      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +David S Poteet Hi David - glad the book is useful. Your question has a slightly obscure answer! Go to Custom Menu page 8 and make sure Touch Screen and Touch Tab are on. Now, on the right hand side of the monitor you will see 3 tabs. Touch the middle one and you will see an icon of a hand with index finger pointing and an X. Touch that so that it highlights in yellow. From now on, when you touch the screen the camera will fire. If you want the camera to focus where you touch the screen (as you normally would) make sure Touch AF is set to AF (or AF+AE if you want exposure st at the same time).

      Yeah no doubt,
      I would've picked it up on impulse too. If i didn't already have the Gx7 and no need for the video capabilities.
      I do think the Gx7 is just as good for stills if not better for my needs(IBIS + 1/320th flash sync) i use it for a drive in studio with children family shoots.
      Unobtrusive small camera is definately more comfortable then shoting them down with a fullframe Dslr. The 1/320th flash sync gives me more control over ambient light.
      The IBIS is great with the 20mm/45mm i use a LOT. That being said would sell the 45mm fro the 42.5mm if i had a G7 and get more effective OIS.

    • @davidthorpe7732
      @davidthorpe7732 8 лет назад

      +1barnet1 I have a feeling that the GX7 will come to be seen as a bit of a classic Micro Four Thirds camera. It gets so much right and I presume that is the reason Panasonic are keeping it in the range. The GX7 and G7 for stills are very similar and leaving aside video, I'd make the choice on the body shape and the GX7's IBIS. May not be the best but it works well enough for most.

    I'm really interested in this camera. However, I think I will hang onto my G6 & EM5ii combo. 4K would be fantastic but it will have to wait.
    The camera I'm really interested in is the upcoming Fuji X70 as a carry-everywhere camera mainly for stills. Currently I use the Olympus with the 17 1.8 for that. I used to use the GM1 but my daughter really likes that camera so it's on permanent loan ; )

    Fantastic review! want to change from nikon 5300 to a Micro 4/3 camera because of weight. I normaly take 90% fotos and 10% video. Should i buy this one or the gx7? whats you opinion. The gx8 is too expensive for me. I only have 800€.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +1

      +siriusestrela I'd go for this G7. It's newer than the GX7 but not much bigger and has the full range of Panasonic goodies like 4K Stills and Post Focus. The bigger sensor of the GX8 is not crucial (to me anyway) so all that is really missing from the G7 is the bigger EVF. Unless you are a videom specialist (and, as you say, you are not) this camera is essentially a mini-GH4.

    In mid-2018 how does the G7 compare to the EM1 mark 1 (original) as a used buy? Or something better, for stills predominantly

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  6 лет назад

      The E-M1 has the inbuilt stabilization, PDAF and was a generally higher spec camera, of course. There's little in it in terms of IQ. In principle, the Olympus is the better camera but it's (relatively!) old and you'd need to know it is in good order. If a good one, I'd buy the Olympus but I'd want a dealer warranty on it. In fact, mulling it over, I'd probably go for a new G7. A bit of a toss-up, though. I'd also look at a used G80. Newer camera, very up to date spec and I've seen them in mint coindition for less than a new G7.

    Great review David! , I am middle of choosing between G7 vs GX7 (both used camera) , and GX7 costs a little bit less. Also, I'm looking at the new GX80 which bring very sharp pictures and come with 5 Axis IS. Could you help me about that?
    ps, I don't mind about video and 4K.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Pongphat Naegkhunthod The G7 has a better EVF than the GXs and a fully articulated monitor. The GX80 (which I'm using at the moment is very, very good. I'd go for that if you can mainly to be as up to date as possible with the stabilization. If not, the G7. It's a close call, though.

      No bother. In normal use, you'll find little difference in results from any of these cameras. GX7 owners are probably the least likely to change their cameras, there is something a bit special about the camera.

      +James K I am the bearer of good news, James. It is built into the camera. It's only useful for video. Go to the movie menu and you will see it listed there. It turns your lens into a 28-280mm zoom. That gives an angle of view of roughly a 600mm lens on 35mm. It's a lot of magnification and you'll need a tripod! Works best with FHD video, 1920x1080. Enjoy it!

    • @davidthorpe7732
      @davidthorpe7732 7 лет назад

      Assuming similar prices, I'd say the GX8. You have in body stabilization that will work with a stabilized Panasonic lens for Dual IS and a class leading EVF. Also, there's the 20Mp sensor instead of 16Mp of the G7. All in all the GX8 is a more up to date camera. The G7 is excellent value for money but the price of the GX8 has dropped considerably. The G80 is good value, too, with even better IBIS and a new shock free and very quiet shutter.

    You said the body is plastic - thought i read something different before, doesn’t this camera have a magnesium alloy body - or is skin just plastic? Would you recommend it for a beginner focusing on stills?

    • @00fabian7
      @00fabian7 7 лет назад

      The skin is plastic, not magnesium alloy (which also makes it so light). The GH4 has a magnesium alloy body, of which the G7 is the little brother. The G7 is mostly a hybrid camera, for a beginner that also wants the possibility of video.
      If you don't care about video at all, around the price class of the G7 I'd suggest looking at the Fujifilm XT10 (Fujifilm has amazing colour though more expensive glass (lenses)) or the Sony A6000 (A4000 if you want a great budget one).
      Thing about these is the point of getting glass.
      - Fujifilm has amazing glass but you pay the price for it
      - Sony has some good glass but also more expensive. Through an adapter they can also fit many other APC-S lenses so it's quite versatile.
      - Panasonic has great lens variety, and the m4/3 lenses are smaller than the APC-S lenses. Do pay attention here that it's a 4/3 sensor so for a 50mm equivalent lens you need a 25mm 4/3 lens. (For 70mm you need a 35mm, and so on.)
      In my opinion:
      Best stills: Fujifilm XT10
      Best portability: Sony A6000/A4000 (purely looking at the body, the G7 has a bigger body but smaller lenses. Pick your poison.)
      Best hybrid: Panasonic G7

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад +1

      I've been working hard on the audio and it's getting better. Just not an area i know about but with some help from Charles Walkowski I've improved things.
      I'm a one man band here, everything, I mean everything, is done by me. My experience is as a stills photographer and that's how I have always earned my living and I have limited time available to learn new disciplines. Playing stuff back through my computer speakers didn't show up the sound quality, though I have since bought a pair of quality headphones.
      I have to pay for all this and the cameras myself, so, again there are limits to what I can do.

      +Don Floyd I'd buy a Sony if I was looking for more IQ but the stuff I sell for my crust is for editorial print and web use so there's no purpose in me exposing pixels I'll have to discard! In reality, if I were going back to my old job, much of which was studio based, the Sony would only be a half-way house and I'd buy a Hasselbald

      +Don Floyd No, the same. T oget better video quality, higher bit rates and so on, you'd have to go the GH4.

    The video ability of g7 really blow up its rivals in similar price. Canon and nikon don't have such a camera that shoot 4k with reasonable price at this moment. g7 also have focus peaking and over exposure zebra for video production.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Wan HL Yes, to get all that video capability at such a price is amazing. I don't think any other maker would be able to do it but Panasonic have so much expertise in video. Compared to the GH4, what Panasonic have had to leave out is stuff that 99% of us wouldn't need to use anyway. I was going to say the essentials are there but it actually goes way beyond essentials!

    • @davidthorpe7732

      Yes, it is. Around £500 with the standard zoom gives you a very capable camera at a much better price than its competition. It lacks in body stabilisation but most Panasonic lenses come with good stabilisation anyway.

    Right now I've found, in the US where I am, the G7 for $ 500. I have a bunch of older lenses, mainly Canon FD, I was wondering if you had any experience with this adapter: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839145-REG/vello_la_mft_cfd_lens_mount_adapter.html or if you suggest another one. I don't need to invest in one of those expensive speedbooster yet. $ 500 bucks, that's pretty amazing, I think!

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  8 лет назад

      +Philippe Orlando That's a steal at that price, really. The adapters, they are much of a muchness. I use one I bought on Amazon for £20/ $28. The one you suggest looks absolutely fine as well. The Canons won't be auto-focus, of course, although Aperture Priority auto will work as normal. Much better use of those lenses than selling them, I'd say and since you are only using the central sweet spot of the lens coverage, you can expect good sharp results.

      I don't think the G7 is any less strong than other cameras but certainly the E-M10 MkII feels more solid. Whether it actually is or not I don't know but my experience of plastics (and they are high grade ones used in camera bodies) is that they take a drop better than metal. The selling point of the G7 is value for money but the best camera in the world is no good to someone who doesn't like the feel of it. The great point of the Micro Four Thirds system is that whichever brand you buy, it's going to use the same lenses.

    Hi David, thank you for all of your responses thusfar. I am hoping you could advise me. I have a G7 and am using it more for filming along with my Zhiyun crane V2. I’m having a hard time with focus hunting and would like your advice on a great lens for my type of filming and possibly settings to improve my filming. I have a sample video I’ve recently shot of you would please take a look for example:
    ruclips.net/video/IAC7fGZCsKk/видео.html
    Thank you, I look forward to your suggestions!!

      The first thing I'd say is that any technical shortcomings matter far less because the message you are giving and the story you are telling is clear as well as being logically shot and stated without gimmickry. It's that that your viewers will notice. Few people take the trouble to plan their shooting and when they do it really stands out.
      The focus hunting (and there's not much of it, really) is inevitable with a rapidly moving and changing subject. The only way around that - at 0:23s or example - is to manually set the focus. There's actually no reason not to manually focus since the subject distance is more or less static. The whole video looks a little dark to me - though that may be what you intended, for atmosphere. I'd a dial in a 1/3 or 2/3 + exposure compensation myself. On lenses, any good standard zoom will do the job. The 14-140mm is a good sharp all-rounder for video. Too wide on your kind of stuff makes video look distorted pr gimmicky and since you can pan video around a room, is hardly necessary.
      I'd experiment a bit with the video settings to get the cleanest, most natural look. I rarely use anything except the standard Style setting and Shutter priority 25 fps (30 for USA, of course). Very impressive video, though. You aren't slick like a salesman but you are articulate and enthusiastic and obviously know what you are talking about.

      David Thorpe thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video and provide very informative and helpful feedback! And I appreciate the kind words!
      To be honest, I’m very new at photography and cinematography. Years ago I had a Nikon D70 that I loved to take around the streets and shoot. But my music career and having six kids took up more of my time that allowed me to study and really become competent at photography. I’m the type where if I can’t immerse myself in a subject to become competent I put it off until further notice LOL. I’m at a point in my life and career where I am afforded the time and means to delving deeper into this new passion...and I am really loving it! My point in saying that is that I am still new to the exposure triangle I think it’s called? I’ve really learned an incredible amount from your videos which is why I chose to bring my question to you rather than the slew of RUclips informants!
      I will take your advice and start shooting in manual focus mode. And I will also try to brighten my exposure a bit more. The lenses I have currently are:
      -14-42 kit lens
      -12-32 F3.5
      -25 F1.7
      -Olympus 9mm fisheye
      I’d like purchase a few more lenses, and will look into the 14-140 as you’ve suggested. Also as you and I are discussing on your GM1 video, I am currently deciding which to purchase next between the gm1, gm5, and gx850 as a walkabout camera!

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  6 лет назад +1

      You're welcome, Adam. You are pretty well covered for lenses, really. The 14-140 saves a lot of lens changing but if you don't need the telephoto end it is less useful and something like a 45mm might be useful for portraits and voice to camera shots.

    COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY, I JUST BOUGHT ONE AND THERE IS NO VID STABILIZATION.. ALL MOVING FOOTAGE SHAKY NO MATTER HOW SLOW YOU WALK ETC.

    • @davidthorpe7732
      @davidthorpe7732 6 лет назад +2

      The lens stabilization works on video. Reading the specs would have told you it does not have IBIS. Even so, a waste of money, I don't think so. Completely shake shake free walking shots are not possible with any system to date, though a few do it very well. I'd suggest using the lens stabilization and then the rest in PP. That's where it should be done, so that you can balance the loss of field of view with the amount of stabilization.

    • @freedomfunwithjlbfriends7193
      @freedomfunwithjlbfriends7193 6 лет назад

      ok, a friend just told me there is software on the internet i can use to stabilize vids, only $99.. what do you reckon...p.s. the lens stabilization is still not good..

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  6 лет назад +4

      For stabilising walking shots neither body or lens stabilisation is very good. The basis is to keep the camera still in the first place. Any stabilisation necessary represents failure to use the camera properly, You can buy rigs dedicated to keeping the camera steady and that is the first thing to do. Technology can not take the place of skill.
