I have a Plex server on a Synology DS1618+, only use it for myself and 1 other family members so the Quad Core Atom processor works just fine. I highly recommend it for both its free content and managing your own library. I have even converted some of my vinyl so I can play it in the car and on the go. Thumbs up for me when it comes to Plex. I did pay for the lifetime Plex pass, I got it on sale for 89.99 several years back.
Using Plex made me figure out some best practices if you plan on leaving a PC on at all times. I set my plex PC to sleep and wake at certain times of the day/night. If my plex server is sleeping, I use a wake-on lan app to wake it up from anywhere in the world. You have to adjust some settings on the server and your router to achieve this. Great Vid
@@rtm135 You responded to a 3 year old message. Back then I was running my Plex off a beefed up gaming PC. My method totally worked, and it saved my HDD. The server was only shared between 3 people. The ability of converting a DVD or Blu-ray movie I have purchased to digital for personal use is becoming more and more difficult and may end my purchasing of DVDs and Blu-ray movies as they get older and just waiting a few more years until they become available on a streaming service. I have the ones I have converted, audio CDs, and pictures available for Plex viewing or listening using an older network attached computer. Plex is just one of my ways to view movies though via Roku or network attached PC and it is free if you don't need the extra things you get with a paid version. Would pay the lifetime fee if I ever decide to pay for those features.
I really like plex and it has come a long way!! Quite stable now... I hear that they plan on dropping htpc software support soon though and think this is a huge mistake... many of us use computers and they ALREADY have good software in place...
I need some advice. I've got a ton of files that don't have the right metadata, so in Plex all the wrong things are pulled up for it. What are some ways that I can tackle this?
A free user , how much data or movies we can upload in library from Windows PC. ??? And how many devices we can login this free id and watch same data all across the devices.
Nice work ...... today 3/18, is my first day being chord free! So, I’m learning about my streaming options including Plex, which I paid for a lifetime subscription. Thanks again!!
Hi, I am trying to stream movie from desktop windows app to LG C1 webOs TV and it is working just fine, but if I select my speakers as audio device from the list, audio does not switch to speakers but keeps running trough TV speakers. I am wondering if this option is available when streaming? Switching audio devices works if I play movie directly to PC. Thank you.
Actually a good idea. I can make digital copies of all the old cds and dvds i have to finally get rid of them. The roms retro gaming stuff is also really cool
hey so i am new to Plex and i think it is amazing, i am strictly using Plex for my movies and tv shows i own im not worried about streaming live tv or anything like that... im worried it wont make my internet go up right? i mean, i do have unlimited data so i should be ok right? also i just found out from your video that you can play games like snes n nintendo... if i have Plex on my xbox can i use my controller for those games? sorry for the noobish questions lol Awesome video man, very helpful!!!
Can someone answer a question for an old guy that has archived his collection? My TV show are in a TV file and each show has its own file , each episode has the show title and episode number Example That 70's Show S1-E3 But only season 1 shows up on my plex server. What am I doing wrong?
Hi there! Not sure if this will help, but one file setup I've seen work on Plex is: [Main TV Shows Folder] - [Subfolder For Specific Show] -- [Sub-Subfolder For Each Season] So inside a folder for That '70s Show, you'd have 8 folders - labeled Season 01, Season 02, etc. And then you'd divide the episodes among the appropriate Season folder. Make sure you have some consistent naming, like: For Season 01, Episode 01: That70sShow-S01-E01 (and that file would go under the Season 01 folder) And for Season 06, Episode 10: That70sShow-S06-E10 (in the Season 06 folder) Hope that helps! Hi and thanks for checking out our video. The Skip Intro function is available to Plex Pass subscribers for use with their Plex Media Server content. The company has a guide at this link for enabling the feature: support.plex.tv/articles/skip-content/ I hope that helps and thanks for watching! - Philip
I’m curious about Plex. I’ve got around 300 movies on my iTunes collection and several seasons of TV shows as well. Is it really worth the time and effort to convert these to Plex? And also is the main benefit of Plex just pirating content and saving it to your servers?
I'd say no, especially if you have an Apple TV box, PLEX is very useful for most people who just want to access their downloaded pc films/tv series on their home cinema systems without the messing around.
My Only problem with Plex is that it ignored over half my media when I imported it and they were all mp4 files I never keep anything but an mp4. I even convert mkv to mp4
I have seen many users enthusiastically support Plex but I'm worried about privacy. For example if I have media on my home computer which I'm watching in my living room does Plex have a catalog of all the media movies TV music etc that they have the right to keep a record of? But most important to me are my personal photos and my personal home movies. Does Plex keep thumbnails and other metadata of my personal media?
All thumbnails and metadata is stored on your device in the plex folder. All plex does is gather the metadata from the internet about the logs I am not sure
@awashkardoos2384 just be aware that there's some content that you won't be able to access for free. That may be the reason in your case. See if you can access other content

Or.... you could just build a headless server. Windows is not really that well suited for server work.
Your Plex Server should never sleep. I have mine set to do maintenance between midnight and 8am.

But if you only want to have your own media that you collected then how do you disable free tv shows, music and movies and just show only your media
8326 movies and growing in my plex sever along with 103 tv shows
Wow brother, nice. Have 5,650 movies 200 4k and 79 shows. Using about 110TB. How about u?
What is the point? I can just download any movie I want individually and watch it. From my tv connected to my pc
@orcapeanuts8303 where do you get your movies in good quality like 4k or blueray
you can download it on your computer and watch it anywhere not just on your computer.

So, with plex you can stream any shows(e.g. arcane which is on Netflix) without paying Netflix subscription, on your own media library?
yes
Just pirate it

Great job 👏🏼
with its free software for Windows, Plex premium allows great options to game, stream and organize content at the same time.
Thank you very much free movies. And game t.v shows and music
How to use it??
MacOS only works from 10.13 High Sierra or better
Thank you for the advice 😄
Do you need a television licence to stream movies on Plex?

Plex is not for pirating content. It allows you to share files you already have with multiple devices and friends/family.
who actually pays for media anymore...? with gb connections and newsgroups and torrents
I use it with a Raspberry Pi server. The only problem I have is deleting content.
is it safe?
My Only problem with Plex is that it ignored over half my media when I imported it and they were all mp4 files I never keep anything but an mp4. I even convert mkv to mp4
I don't get that problem. There is a little button that says scan or something maybe that helps
What happened to the guy that did this and thanks?
Can I watch this offline or do I need wifi 🤔
If you download your own media using a server, you should be able to watch without internet

you can't add your personal collection of movies, music and tv shows to Pluto TV; with Plex you can
