I have no idea how you guys don’t have at least double your current subscribers by now. You guys are just routinely putting out great, top-tier, largely objective, informative content and I love it. Keep up on the sort of ‘basics’ videos like this one and the one about ball placement in your stance, because it’s only going to bring you more followers.
Standing on 18th tee last night 1 up in Semi-final. 18th at ours is 160yards all carry over heather and bunkers. Always struggled a bit with it, usually fat and short. Watched this video yesterday morning, tee’d it just above the ground on a broken off tee and nailed it to 10 feet to win!! Cheers guys, great work👍🏌🏿
Hopefully this one gets a lot of views. Almost every amateur golfer (including myself) has struggled with how to approach teeing an iron. Thanks, fellas!
I suggest learning to play par 3s without a tee first and then adding them later...then you will actually notice the difference and know when to use them
Cheers for this, I have been researching "how can i get better at golf without lessons?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Reyuhaffad Underlying Recognition - (just google it ) ? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering how to revealing an effortless golf swing technique minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my brother in law got great results with it.
Makes so much sense. I usually tee my ball up thinking it's helping myself. I know now I need to shorten my tee height to get my perfect numbers. thanks guys
I do what Jumbo Ozaki used to do many years ago and what all golfer did before there were tees, which is to create a small mound of turf with my iron and place the ball on top of that mound. Gives the advantage of a tee but sits on the ground. For me, you’re hitting all if not most of your shots all day long off the fairway or rough, then suddenly on a par 3, you prop the ball up on a tee...just never felt natural to me.
Loving the "club fitting turned instruction" videos. When you're so knowledgeable with this technology its great so see you sharing info thats applicable to everyone. Keep it up!
Best videos on the internet. I hate instruction videos that teach basic things in a PGA tour language. You guys teach science in a way that I sooo easy to understand ❤️❤️❤️🤘🏾
Another excellent advice. I've always been using a tee on par 3 - putting ego aside and getting a perfect lie. Arrived through experience to same conclusions: almost level with the ground for shorter irons and slightly higher for long irons to get that perfect 'bull's eye" strike... :o)
You continue to provide outstanding explanations of important topics, using the technology. Topics teaching pros work on but at times have difficultly putting into visualization. In my opinion, being armed with this kind of knowledge will make working with a pro easier and better understood. Please keep it up. It is greatly appreciated.
Along these lines I’d love to see the difference when one is in between clubs. Are most player more accurate stepping on/deloft the higher lofted club or choking down/ball moved up/smooth swinging the lowered lofted club? Maybe a new challenge for big Al to see who can get 20 swings closer? 10 of each.
At this point I’m convinced you guy just plug numbers into the computer lol! Matt your ability to recreate shots with numbers that close is incredible! Great work guys.
Just started getting your videos in my feed and they are excellent. Better info and presentation than many other more established channels. Subscribed.
It's like you guys are reading my mind, there have been so many videos recently that answer absolutely all of my internal thoughts around fitting, driver height, tee or no tee. Love the content!
The Dirtydogs at it again! Can’t stress enough how usefull these info sessions are. By FAR the best relevant information out there. Thanks Ian & Matty Boy!
I’ve always played par 3’s with no tee. I’m gonna go sneak onto the course for an hour before dark and hit shots into the green with and without. Thanks for giving me something to think about.
I have a golf simulator set-up and you guys are giving me so much to work with. Really good the way you talk to the stats and measurements. Hoping it helps as I grind for game improvements...and definitely considering TXG for a club fitting session.
I randomly watched this and this helped me understand something so much more. I’m so steep on my irons, so practice with a low tee on irons at the range. Good way to get in the habit of not hitting nearly as fat. Thanks guys for the random lessons
A tip for some of you out there is to play with tee height. If I am between clubs I will take a bit off by teeing the ball up a bit so I can hit it a few mm higher on the face. Similarly if I have wind on my back and I want to add some dynamic loft, than this works as well.
When I was 11 years old, my father said. Son you always use a tee on a par 3 because it's the only chance you get on the golf course to 100% control your lie.
Anyone remember how the LPGA player Laura davies used to tee it up on a par 3? She used to take the heel of her shoe and dig it into the turf to raise a piece of grass up and then she would tee the ball up on top of that little dug up piece of grass,, unbelievable,,,, great educational video guys thank you so much for sharing!!
These videos are so beneficial. I’m 24 and just got into golf big time last year and some tips like these I found myself doing in my round today. Love the tips, keep up the great work guys!
Many years ago I was part of a small group of folks taking a lesson from a pro named Gary Player. When asked he said in his somewhat abrasive way "Why would you not give yourself the advantage of a consistently perfect lie when striking the ball with an iron." He then proceeded to show us how to tee it (low) and made two hits 1 with a tee, 1 from ground. Without a shred of doubt the answer has been clear to me ever since, but if you can answer the question of teeing up for an iron any better then Gary I would like to hear it.
@ 4:17 is the exact reason why I don't use a tee when i'm hitting my irons, I'm a mid to low handicap player so my ball striking is pretty good and I've seen a lose in distance on the course whenever I've tested out teeing up my ball. However I'm intrigued by the thought of using a tee as a method of distance control and a way to attack front pins especially if the greens I'm playing on a firm
Nice. How about a 'Shaft Length' video? Give Matt -1/2", STD, +1/2" and +1" irons, with the proper lie angles (and swing weights?) and see what happens with his ball flight? Should show the value of a proper length fitting?
Personally, I'd be static fitted to +1/4". Given the same swing weight, I can't imagine that it could matter what with the unevenness in a course's fairways, rough, bunkers, ... You get fit for STD or +1/2" (from the shaft wall) and then buy a build at +1/4" - does that matter?
Fitting definitely impacted my game. I was playing stock irons, everything standard. I am a lanky 6'2 just a hair under 6'3. Decided at next upgrade to pay for a professional fitting. What a difference. Fitter found I needed extra length and more upright lie angle for my irons (unsurprisingly given my build). My swing became more upright, the times I topped the ball all but went away, and on level ground shots a lot of stuff that tended to drift off to the side started straightening out. If you're an above or below average height/proportioned, getting fitted makes a big difference IMHO, but you'll have zero excuse for blaming your equipment anymore! :p
I feel like this video is speaking right to my soul. I"m the guy who tees it up super high and swings it so I don't touch the ground... I've got pretty good at it. Minimised chunks as well. But starting to see it impact my fairway shots as I have to take a divot after the ball there.
Interesting vid! When I hit a 6 iron shot well off the fairway vs. a well struck “perfect lie” tee’d up par 3 shot, it’s the same result. To me it depends on turf conditions. Some well manicured tee boxes allow the ball to kind of “perch” up on low cut stiff blades of grass. Hit the ball well and then it won’t matter…haha. See, golf is easy!
Thanks Guys, this series is so useful! I always use a tee on Par3's, with the tee poking up perhaps 1mm above the grass. But if I'm playing on a dewy morning I tee it up just a little higher so that I don't pick up too much moisture from the grass as I come into the Ball and get a Spin killer.
I don't tee up par 3s anymore. It was a psychological thing where I would thin them way too often no matter how low I teed them. I figured "I don't tee up approach shots on par 4s and 5s so why tee shots?" It has definitely helped. Of course I will still set the ball gently on a good lie. Never teeing par 3s again.
Great video, the CG comment makes all the sense. I tend to concentrate more on my swing when I don't use a tee. But unfortunately am not a good enough ball striker to not use a tee when hitting longer irons. Will only hit without till the i8 but that goes 185y for me
Ahhh...thank goodness. I was waiting on this video with some anxiousness. Good news though that my own personal thoughts on teeing it up at basically ground level was proven out to be a good thing. Big thanks to TXG for their scientific approach. 👍
As Matty said about a perfect lie I never used a tee when I first started playing golf for iron shots and my playing partners asked the pro at the time about it and he said it’s totally preference but he couldn’t think really why somebody wouldn’t take a perfect lie when offered
I’m DEFINITELY that guy who is steep enough that I tee my irons with the tee at or just barely above ground level (hybrids and fairways, too). This works great for me 99%+ of the time.
Just caught up with this week and for the first time used a lower tee off the tee with my iron. Went OK for the first time will continue. Interestingly I use one length irons.
My dad taught me to always tee it up when you can. It's the only time you're guaranteed a perfect lie. Tee it right down for a normal shot and with the top of the tee showing to take a bit off the shot for the exact reason you mentioned. Less mass a bit more loft.
Opposite end of the spectrum you're talking about, but when I hit a 2 iron off the tee I'll tee it basically in the ground or not use a tee at all because it makes me feel like I'm hitting down/through it more which makes my path less in to out and reduces any hookage that may occur.
Only discovered these guys the other day and been watching constantly. Absolutley great to watch and concise information! keep the great work up.... Ill get into the mid handicap range in no time haha!
Giving this video a 9.5/10 on the value meter. Great video. *The 16th at Pulpit is quite similar to this hole. Wheat over on this side...chaff, yer over here!
Very interesting... I'm the type of player that hasn't been teeing it up (knocking up grass into a tee) to improve my striking skills. I'm about to go play, will ensure I tee it up a little on the par 3's and will let you know how it goes...
This would be a good thing for those of use who don’t have golf simulators to get out the old foot spray, go to the range and see where on the face you actually strike the ball with different tee heights and develop a routine to be consistent with it.
highly recommend buying a bag of the short tees. They will get you through a summer and then some and you don't need to jam your regular tees the whole way into the ground or use broken tees that may or may not sit nicely.
Sweepy but off the ground......I’m just trying to not miss hit, then scramble from there. Not to many club fitters are great ball strikers. Well done 👍
2 things not mentioned, and where I will use a slightly higher than normal 'perfect' tee height is: 1) to give the ball a little Draw - you could see Matt's 2nd shot had more Draw curvature than his 1st, 2) on a very downwind Par 3, the trailing wind will knock a ball down and you just don't get the land angle to hold the green - if you tee is up more than you want to, and then take 1 club less that you are comfortable with, and then use a driver spine angle tilt to get an upward hit on the iron and launch it into the sky, you will then get the huge help of the trailing wind and you will get a massive land angle.
Never really had this issue. I preferred to not use a tee for any short to mid irons because I hit down on them well enough to generate a lot of spin. I need that pinch against the ground and I've found that with a tee, I would get different enough flight characteristics that it was another variable to memorize. It was just easier to know off a perfect fairway-like lie, I'd get the same ball flight, distance and soon that I'm used to. Worked for me, did it all through being #1 man on my HS team shooting single digit handicap. But I get the logic here.
I saw Arnold Palmer on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show back in the 1960's and this question came up. Arnold's response with no hesitation was "Tee it up".
These videos are amazing. Please continue doing videos using data to show the effects of all the different aspects of golf. How swing plane vs club head alignment affects start path and spin would be great.
This a real gem fellas! This game is hard enough as it is. If you have a chance to give yourself a perfect lie even if you’re hitting a wedge to a 130 yd par 3...do it!!
Thank you for this video! Gonna try this on the first hole at my local 9 hole hack course where it hits 175-189. I always tee it high and end up with a high hook.
UPDATE: I just finished my round at my local 9 hole hack. I went to play based on the information from this video. All I can say is that it all checks out! I flushed the tee just enough to where the ball is spherical to the ground. Every hole was straight and I finished the round at +4!!! Thank you so much! I just found a weapon just as valuable as a new golf club! I hit the first hole straight. But I’m getting closer to conquering it!....I topped the ball😖Ugh. LoL
I started playing golf 3 months ago. I’m 63 years old. Golf looks so simple but there are a lot of fundamentals one must learn to be satisfied with your game. I too am learning on the fly. I was told that I should have started with a few lessons first. I wish I had.
@@davidbrown5152 Well, I'm 44 and have been playing on and off for 30+ years. As a self-taught junior, I've spent the last two years or so of 'serious golf' trying to 'unlearn' everything I thought was right! If I've any advice to give, it would be to invest in coaching hours (and watching TXG) rather than expensive equipment in the early days. 3 months in, it's still very early. Good luck and enjoy the game, David.
I got down to a 3.8 handicap golfer, I’ve probably not used a tee on a par 3 for 30 years now, I even went through a Laura Davies phase of using driver with a bumped up piece of ground…… it basically helps me to play down into the shots so I go down and through….. my bad shots were all from lifting up and out of the shots early….. what I will say though is that on the par 3’s I bump enough ground up s that the back of the ball is clear of any grass that could get between club face and ball so I believe I get the same strike as if the ball was on a tee…..
This is great, and probably eye-opening for some. When I first started practicing at the range, I was hitting every club off the rubber tee and not off the mat. I changed that up rather quickly though.
I don't know what it is but you guys are on fire with the content during the quarantine. Such a great debate, tee or no tee on a par 3. I usually hit with no tee, so I have no chance of a high face pop up. This was a great video. I have to try teeing it a lot lower again. I always thought it was a waste if a tee, but seeing is believing .
I've never used a tee and never will, it helps me get/stay in my groove with my irons and I always strike it better without a tee because I simply dont practice that as much
Back 'in the day' we used to just hit the ground with the club to create a small mound (grass tee) to place the ball on. Same concept as using a tee - give yourself the perfect lie the only time you're allowed. That doesn't seem to be done anymore. I guess using a tee means a few less divots on the tee box.
I like to hit off the turf at 3par like Dentonia park in Toronto as I try to emulate what I would have to do on the larger courses. If I do use a tee it's 1/4 inch at most high
My uncle does the super high tee thing and still manages to thin it. 😂 I've always used tee height to impact launch, spin, and shape. If I want a draw i'll tend to tee it a tiny bit higher than normal and sweep it a little more from the inside. The opposite for a cut; lower tee height and a more neutral path.
Being a poor golfer, my favourite trick is to place the ball on a tee, 1/4 inch off the ground at the front of someone elses divot. If i strike down on it, it acts as a normal compressed shot. If I am a little fat, we have a pre-cut channel for the club to pass through bef0re it strikes the ball. I seriously went from shooting 103 to 101 doing this :o
Thanks for sharing gents the content is relative, informative and straight to the key points of golf for us amateur golfers out there keep up the great work guys👏👏👏
I love this! I use no tee when I’m down wind or firm greens where additional spin can only help my cause. On the flip, if I’m 175 yards from the flag but my stock 7 iron goes 185, I know I can use my 8 iron and tee it up a tad to get a higher strike which will drop the spin a tad and give me a little more carry.
Biggest factor in stopping the ball on the green is not spin, but descent angle of the ball landing on a green. You are loosing shots using that technique.
Max Caysey You are correct. But don’t assume because I mentioned only spin in helping hold the greens that my angle of decent is not adequate. I am a high spin player that hits his irons plenty high with lots of decent angle.
Well this confirms my thinning problem. too sweepy and my angle of attack honestly may be up cuz I have had a few tops in the 2 rounds I've played so far.
For the longer shots I always tee up, but almost always off the deck for the short par 3s. The huge spin from hitting a PW off a tee can be more hindrance than help.
Great video I'm looking forward to trying it tomorrow I've been coming up short on par 3s for a long time that's why I went back to off the ground but I will play around with my tee height tomorrow
In my golf club the par 3's are very long except one. 220 yards, 235 yards and 250 yards. I use a tee in all par threes except for 1 par three that is only 110 yards long but theres a lake to carry and many times the ball backspins from the middle of the green to the water if you don't use tee. So in my opinion using or not using a tee can be an advantage or it could be a disadvantage depending on the shot you actually want to hit.
I cannot wait for the golf ball testing, I hope those videos come out this week... By the way, I love seeing you guys produce this kind of content. When this crazy time is over you guys should bring Larry in for some videos as well!
No matter how low I tee the ball it always messes with me and I usually end up taking some weird swing or blading it. I'm just far too used to hitting irons off the ground. Teeing up wedges on shorter par 3s leads to an even worse result for me.
PS - I have played Quail Hollow three times (tough course, for sure). However, I was playing one set of tees further up, which made #17 about 162 yards, which is a “stock” 6-iron shot for me. One time, I did “jump on it”a bit and pulled my tee shot into the water left of the green, but other than that I was in the middle of the green on that hole.
I would love to see this done with one length clubs. I would think you would maintain a steeper angle of attack through the set due to the shorter length of the long irons and continue to be able to hit off the turf with the long irons if that was your preference.
Tees:
Downside - pointy
Upside - not pointy
10/10 - would like again
you're a clever man
lmao
Oh my you win today!

You can place your ball without without a tee, but still a good point

@@maxcaysey2844 And you can take a perfect lie with a tee and without a tee!
Thanks. Used the forward backward stance thought yesterday. Very interesting working with different clubs too.
I’m DEFINITELY that guy who is steep enough that I tee my irons with the tee at or just barely above ground level (hybrids and fairways, too). This works great for me 99%+ of the time.
Another qual video from the TXG boys. Data driven information. Thanks guys.
I usually go one club more when using a tee, especially on a winter mat.
Great video guys! Short, concise and very insightful this will definitely be in my next newsletter to my members!
I have gone back and forth with this on the course. Thanks for the info!
PEARFECTLY set on the turf! Love it!
Only discovered these guys the other day and been watching constantly. Absolutley great to watch and concise information! keep the great work up.... Ill get into the mid handicap range in no time haha!
I didn't know that I didn't know this, until I saw this video. Quality work as per usual
Giving this video a 9.5/10 on the value meter. Great video.
*The 16th at Pulpit is quite similar to this hole. Wheat over on this side...chaff, yer over here!
Probabley one of the best demonstrations of 99mph swing goes shorter than a 95mph probably .....now for the Carlsberg .....👍👍
Absolutely agree!
Thank you for this piece. I’m a tee guy. But have been battling myself to get away from it sometimes. This video was extremely helpful. 🍻 cheers
LoL
Superb, gents! My god I wish I was starting again as a junior and didn’t have to figure these things out (often badly) myself. ⛳️
@@nickmarr1 Nick, thanks for your advice!
Same here, when I saw all the people hitting the balls really well off the Matt, that's what I started trying to do
I don't know what it is but you guys are on fire with the content during the quarantine. Such a great debate, tee or no tee on a par 3.
I usually hit with no tee, so I have no chance of a high face pop up. This was a great video. I have to try teeing it a lot lower again. I always thought it was a waste if a tee, but seeing is believing .
With winter coming you guys should do some testing of budget launch monitors next to the gc quad. Rapsodo MLM, mevo, mevo plus, skytrak, etc.
First time seen a video of this nature/specific... Top, Simple Tip guys !!! Thank you
Depends on the hole length for me. Generally use a tee if a par 3 requires 7 iron or higher, and not if it's an 8 iron or lower.
My exact philosophy. Short irons are easier to hit down on
I like to hit off the turf at 3par like Dentonia park in Toronto as I try to emulate what I would have to do on the larger courses. If I do use a tee it's 1/4 inch at most high
My uncle does the super high tee thing and still manages to thin it. 😂
I've always used tee height to impact launch, spin, and shape.
Subscribers are comming in nicely, keep it up guys
For the longer shots I always tee up, but almost always off the deck for the short par 3s. The huge spin from hitting a PW off a tee can be more hindrance than help.
Great video I'm looking forward to trying it tomorrow I've been coming up short on par 3s for a long time that's why I went back to off the ground but I will play around with my tee height tomorrow
Can we have one on ball below/above feet as us amateurs get brain freeze especially when hitting long approach shot , thanks TXG.👍
Another excellent video! With the last 3 videos, you're helping some people shave some strokes off their game! Keep up the great work and stay safe!
My buddy's always tee it up way height and I cringe when I see it. I like to give myself a perfect lie but not more than. liking this style of video
Great video guys! Really good explanation and excellent examples. Best tip right at the end - make solid contact!
Thanks heaps!!!
Only got to about 7 1/2 minutes in the video and have to stop at to just say thanks. Great info thanks
This is my biggest stuggle/thought on the course.
Love the topic!
Definitely trying this to see what works best for me... thank you guys!
