Gene Roddenberry said he specifically created Wesley to be himself when he was a teen, although he admits that he was never the genius that Wesley was. In fact, Gene's middle name was Wesley.
I liked Wesley when I watched TNG during its original run for reasons that Wil Wheaton later wrote, "he was a kid who was mature for his age and the adults couldn't figure out how to deal with him." I was in a similar position at the time, with my father demanding adult level responsibility (and it was a lot on a 70 head dairy farm) and unable to handle the fact that I was still a kid so would make mistakes.
Its amazing how tough the application process seems to be to get into Star Fleet Academy but then you also see the ludicrous officers that graduated from there or how menial their duties are on board a starship.
Also Nog seemed to have an easier time than Wesley. I’ve seen some people suggest they had different “skill set” slots, and that Wesley was only competing amongst the other super-gifted kids for scientific and technical placements. Which, I’m not super sure how I feel about. On one hand it ensures everyone can contribute within their abilities if they choose. OTOH it feels kind of weird to box kids in like that, especially because Nog _does_ end up being a technical genius. But I guess that does surprise a few of the folks above him in the chain of command, at first, so maybe that confirms it is happening but also it’s flexible-enough to realise when it misjudged someone?
