This is a great video for anyone considering a suppressor. I bought a suppressor from the Silencer Shop for my 9mm Walter PPQ. It took about 10 months for me to get my suppressor. The actual sound suppression is about 30 dB. When I bought a threaded barrel for the Walther it came with a stronger recoil spring with instructions to use that spring when shooting with a suppressor. Using a 147 grain bullet I had issues with the action so I went back to the original recoil spring. You will get more blow back gasses with a suppressor so wear glasses. The Walther is my primary home defense weapon so if I had to use it inside the sound unsuppressed would degrade my ability to hear. One more thing, I think a suppressor works better on a gun were the barrel does not move.
a properly designed suppressor will greatly reduce any gas blowback into your face. You are correct, barrels that do not move during the firing cycle are better hosts for suppressors UNLES you use a booster in conjunction with your suppressor on a handgun. Look at GSL Technology suppressors. GSL doesn't do marketing hype, just excellent engineering. The owner of GSL, Greg Latka, has forgotten more about suppressors than most in the suppressor market will ever know. He's been in the field for 40+ years.

Going from 118db to 98db is not a 20% reduction, it's a 99% reduction in sound level. Unfortunately, your ears perceive loudness on a logarithmic scale too (with a different base), so a 99% reduction probably sounds like a 75% reduction in loudness.

I can see there is some difficulty aligning the threads initially whenever you attach it. Depending upon the thickness and the angle of the initial slope of the lead in to the thread, in both or either of the interfacing devices, you can experience a drastic change in the feel of the threads engaging. Familiarity with your specific equipment does play a part too. Having said that, altering the machining profile of the lead-in to the thread in specific ways can allow you to effectively counter rotate the thread interface to align the thread lead-ins on both devices without excessive wear and tear to either device. To put that into more familiar terms or experience.Take a standard bottled beverage with a resalable cap. Remove it then place the cap at the end of the bottle while turning it the wrong direction. When the threads are properly aligned it will jump slightly then fall, allowing you to tighten them without misalignment. If the thread profile on the barrel and/or suppressor is designed well with a minimal, but tactile jump on an initial counter-rotation alignment step, you should be able to thread a suppressor reliably every time without excessive wear on either device.

@@neilarellano8470 Thanks!! I bought the Rugged Obsidian 45, so the booster needed is included, but I’ll be buying another booster for my 9mm guns, and a fixed barrel adapter for my fixed barrels. I’ll be running it on a FN FNX Tactical 45, Glock 30, Glock 34, S&W Shield Plus, and fixed barreled 22’s, 9’s, 38/357. So, you think I should get new recoil springs for the Glocks? I’ve watched TONS of videos and nobody has ever said anything about changing out the recoil springs, but it seems to me like I would need a heavier spring because of the increased pressure. They sell a package with a bunch of different spring weights, and a metal guid rod, so it won’t be too hard to find the right spring weight.
@@danfromthesouth5352 so, my experience with my cans (Kinetic Suppressor ACE and Wizard) and my booster (made by Liberty Suppressors) is that the booster absorbs so much of the cycling energy the stock springs tend to be too stiff for the gun to cycle properly (the casings don't eject). I then went ahead and purchased Glock Recoil kits from NDZ (I got the 11lbs kit for my 17 and the 15lbs kit for my 19x) and they seem to be cycling subs and supers perfectly now. Check their stuff out; the Glock Recoil Kits come assembled and ready to replace your stock recoil spring assembly (it's totally worth it). If running with a booster and reduced power springs doesn't allow you to cycle properly, check your internals for binding/rubbing.
@@danfromthesouth5352 by the way, the term "kit" I mentioned is actually called "guide rod assembly". They're only about 25-30 smackers so they're not too pricey. *DB's are measured using a logarithmic scale* That means a reading of 100db is *1,000,000,000 louder* than a reading of 10db. If a suppressor can take you down to the 90db range, that's good because that's about the same as city traffic.
Very interesting! I think it's one of the few gun related laws that are more lenient in France (and Europe for that matter). In France as long as you prove you own the gun legally, you can freely buy suppressors.

I've replaced my 17's recoil spring with an 11lbs spring and my 19x's recoil spring with a 15lb spring; the stock spring was being iffy with my subsonic loads.
There are suppressors that are nearly silent, at least to TV silent. They have an endcap swipe that blocks the escaping gasses. When used with subsonic ammunition, the first couple of rounds will be relatively silent (like TV suppressors). Unfortunately, ATF has designed the swipes as themselves as suppressors. You can buy the Ruger 10/22 with the suppressed barrel, shooting suppressed ammunition, is nearly (TV) suppressed out of box. E
13.5-1 is metric threads. 13.5mm diameter, 1mm per thread. In some other countries it's easier to buy a suppressor than a gun. Shouldn't be that difficult in the US.
FYI the cell phone app that reads sound is much less accurate then a sound level meter. What is 5he price of a factory glockenspiel 17 and 19 suppressor threaded barrel?
With regard to UK - US expressions, here in the UK 'silencers' or moderators are commonly called 'cans' or suppressors. And, in general, are a fraction of the price you pay in the US, and a lot easier to get.

Depends on the gun and ammo. 300 blk with subs probably wouldn't. 45 ACP with most cans is around 130 decibels. Kinda a moot argument because doing anything fairly loud indoors can cause hearing damage. Most people shooting a lot with suppressors would be shooting outdoors you aren't going to a public range without ear pro anyway. Shooting 9mm subs. 45 ACP is already sub. and 300 blk subs outdoors is perfectly hearing safe with many suppressors.
147 9mm is subsonic. The 115 is supersonic. Eliminating the sonic crack is a big deal. If Lenny used 147 indoors there would be an even more dramatic reduction.

Yes. To function properly you need a device that sits between barrel and suppressor.
I would have liked to hear the comparison with subsonic ammo
FYI. The decibel is a logarithmic scale, so a 20 dB difference is a 10x difference in amplitude.
Haven't checked in on this channel is a couple years....you moved out of CA! Congrats! Let's get a location down in Florida now!!!
Dude, I only wanted to know WHAT I NEED TO DO FOR MY SUPPRESSOR TO WORK ON A GLOCK!! I don’t need a history lesson on silencers, NFA, and how hearing works, and 30 minutes of other crap WE ALREADY KNEW!!! Just tell us how to make my Glock functional as more than a bolt action while using my suppressor!!
Start with getting a booster for your can and a softer recoil spring for your slide.
Plus, you can easily swap out between your OEM and your NDZ recoil assemblies on the fly easily if you need to troubleshoot or moving between suppressed/non suppressed.
@@neilarellano8470 Thanks again!!! I can be hard to find all the info I need so I’m thinking about making my own RUclips channel to answer obscure problems like these. Thanks for the advice!
I'm In NC but I'm Coming to Nashville to check out this facility. Be there Lenny!
I know Lenny has the money but that phone holster is a bold choice. I’d be worried I’d break that thing in half everyday!
Man oh man that mp5sd. Can't wait till mine shows up.
Very nice presentation and info. I would add a shooting test with both 115 supersonic vs 147 or 158gr sub sonic.
That was fun, at the end! My wife even enjoyed it, she shot a P90 so appreciated keeping on target.
Hello, Lenny, You are simply wonderful. Thank you.
Hiram Percy Maxim was also instrumental in creating the ARRL (Amateur Radio Relay League.) An organization for Ham Radio.
My GEN5 G45 MOS FS with OEM Glock threaded barrel has 1/2 - 28 RH threads.
Talking about a conjugal visit with a suppressor made me laugh!
I saw a guy SCREW ON a particular type of oil filter onto his threaded barrel & the shit actually screwed on no issue & deadened a lot of the sound when fired lol
One of his best videos
Thank you for the history lesson and demo. However, I would like to see you shoot 5 consecutive rounds out a suppress Glock with subsonic ammo.
Try it here in East TN in the hollows. Sounds like a cannon going off.
*DB's are measured using a logarithmic scale*
That means a reading of 100db is *1,000,000,000 louder* than a reading of 10db.
If a suppressor can take you down to the 90db range, that's good because that's about the same as city traffic.
Very interesting! I think it's one of the few gun related laws that are more lenient in France (and Europe for that matter). In France as long as you prove you own the gun legally, you can freely buy suppressors.
Can you do a video using subsonic ammo with the Glock 19 with suppressor?
Great video…I fell in love with that MP5!!!
I like this guy personality 👍🏽
Lets start referring to them as Mufflers from now on it would redefine the image & associations the non shooting public have about these devices. Also best parts of video: START‐>25:35 when Lenny says "Gong" play‐‐>25:49 & for finale play ‐>25:43
Seems like the suppressor makes the 9mm sound like a .22 long rifle. Hope to see you when I head north to TN someday soon.
Wish you would have shown the decibel readings when you shot outdoors
My first name is Maxim. My grandfather was a machine gunner during World War 2, in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. I was named after his Maxim machine gun.
I just tell the ATF guys, it's a compensator and I only use it to push the gas away from the other people at the range. I don't use it for noise suppression.
I love that “A conjugal visit for your suppressor” The holes a little tight though
With the new suppressor law in Texas’s man I can’t wait to get one
I hope every state follow Gov Abbott and the Great State of Texas .... because the aft and their bs nfa is most definitely infringements on 2nd Amendment...
Great Video Lenny. Living in Mass. can be a drag....
So then does the left hand thread pitch of the glock barrel prevent the suppressor from loosening?
Yes.
Does anyone find they need different springs or anything when running a can on a Glock or does the factory return spring work?
I heard you need a softer spring, stock one favors blockages, probably has to do with the gas choking but don't take my word for it
I've replaced my 17's recoil spring with an 11lbs spring and my 19x's recoil spring with a 15lb spring; the stock spring was being iffy with my subsonic loads.
E
keep that to yourself fool.
Lenny’s such a pure soul
13.5-1 is metric threads. 13.5mm diameter, 1mm per thread.
In some other countries it's easier to buy a suppressor than a gun. Shouldn't be that difficult in the US.
FYI the cell phone app that reads sound is much less accurate then a sound level meter.
What is 5he price of a factory glockenspiel 17 and 19 suppressor threaded barrel?
Db is logarithmic so 10 dbs reduction is much more than 20 percent
I think it reduces it by 90% 👌👌
Wish you woulda also tested subsonic rounds with the Glock
Does a CWP have any effect or shorten background check since a background check was made for the permit?
No advantages
I got my first suppressor this year on an E form it took 72 days.
Lenny is the best.
Hell Yes! Back Yard plinking…. !
Suppressors for military is more for flash suppression. Js. Been there. Got the key chain and coffee mug
With regard to UK - US expressions, here in the UK 'silencers' or moderators are commonly called 'cans' or suppressors. And, in general, are a fraction of the price you pay in the US, and a lot easier to get.
Why does no one mention that you have to change the recoil spring when running a Glock suppressed. My 19x won’t cycle with a can
Do you have the Nielsen device installed on your suppressor? You cant just directly screw the can directly to the threaded barrel on a Glock, it wont cycle.
@@videosuperhighway7655 ya…… I know this… i know what it needs but I’m surprised no one on RUclips ever mentions that when shooting a Glock suppressed you have to change out recoil spring to lighter one.
@@videosuperhighway7655
im about to build a gen 5 19 and what the absolute best setup (reliability and quietest), will i need that same device just lik shown in video if i used a factory threaded barrel
So I am just beginning to research suppressors. I have a pistol with a threaded 1/28 thread and a pistol carbine in the same 9mm caliber with the same 1/28 thread. Am I correct in thinking I could buy one suppressor and it would work theoretically on both?
It would but you would need a booster and piston for the handgun.
Question, I own a Glock 19 Gen 5 but it did not come with any barrel at the tip. Would I need to buy that small barrel tip before purchasing a suppressor for it? Or do suppressors come with it?
You will need a new barrel that is properly threaded to match the supressor you want.
God bless him for giving a history lesson.
What is the other firearm in the video on the table?
Cheap “fluid entrapment device” suppressors come through Cali ports from China I heard from a friend with some 165 grain Hush sub sonic ammo it sounds just a hair quieter than an air nail gun roof installers use. Just my opinion.
have a glock 23 gen 4 40 cal i would like a suppressor but dont want a bunch of issues just to have a suppressor on my tool what is my options thx stefan from enumclaw washington
Even with the suppresor, you are in the range where prolonged exposure would cause hearing damage.
Not with subsonic ammo.
@@NoneYaBidness762
Carl is correct, even with subsonic ammo, it will harm hearing, if hearing protection is not used.
@@carminemurphy4836 If you say so.
Actually no, because it is an impulse noise and not a constantly on noise.
147 9mm is subsonic. The 115 is supersonic. Eliminating the sonic crack is a big deal. If Lenny used 147 indoors there would be an even more dramatic reduction.
Flexing that MP5 SD. I see ya Mr. Magill....
Lenny is the kind of man every boy needs to learn about being a man from, and too few boys have access to. Direct. Simple. Clear. Demonstrated. ;)
147gr would have been nice to see/hear for comparison but overall excellent video! :-) PS: suppressed slowpoke .45ACP would be cool...
