    Great review. The amp definitely has that classic Marshall sound. I don't think it matters where it is made as much as it used to as long as the company monitors and manages some quality control.

    Thanks for this review. Just purchased the amp. I really like it because it covers most of the tones and sounds I need or prefer. For the heavy work I prefer the second ultra gain channel, but at low gain settings. Lets say at "3". Otherwise the gain is just too much and you will loose definition.

      @genustinca5565 4 года назад

      I would say their sound is similar (I own both), but the Valvestate has trouble going really loud (playing in a full band with loud drummer, bassist and second guitarist). Then the sound turns into a cacophony. The DSL with its all tube power has no problem with that.

    I found your channel about a month ago and got so stoked when you posted the picture of this beast on your Facebook. I'd love to get a Marshall. Peavey 6505+ will always be my favorite head, but Marshall is still up there. Bullet For My Valentine and Crossfaith use them, so I don't get why people are shocked when they hear the gain. 😂

    • @agufish
      @agufish  8 лет назад

      You're talking about Marshall? I thought BFMV used Peavey and Mesa. I know Gary Holt currently uses a DSL100H, and Trivium used to record using an older DSL100. Either way, when they want to, these Marshalls can scream!

  • @WimVandewijngaerde

    I bought one recently and I really like it. I use the clean channel, without crunch and the ultra gain in lead 2, where the gain is only on 3, but that more than enough gain for some prog metal. Higher gain would only kill the precision and your sound. For certain there will be better high-gain heads out there, but for this money?

    Great review again...truthfully, I didnt care for the Mix tone, but thats just my preference. The play through it sounded great.
    Totally agree with you, there is just something 'bout a Marshall, and it its the Iconic 80's amp. And true on being made in Vietnam, as long as the quality control is there.

  • @CreaverI
    @CreaverI 8 лет назад

    Really awesome and high quality video. I like it,
    but you should increase the Volume because of the missing saturation of the power tubes. If it's too loud for you should activate the Triode Mode on the back and if its still too loud for recording you should invest into a powerbrake/Power Attenuator
    I'm a bit jealous xD
    I'm still playing with my Cort X1 (cheap, but nice guitar) and a roland micro cube. If you have the option to try these, you should definitely make a video, because it's the perfect beginners guitar, when you are into metal/punk etc.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  8 лет назад

      lol, I've played a Cort X1, and they're not bad at all. I'm using a Squier Bullet Strat here so...
      I'm actually recording into a Two Notes Torpedo Live, and anything above about 3-4, it was just freaking out. I was getting kind of like a small speaker sound of the amp through the Torpedo that was just throwing off my sense of tone. I thought the better way would be to keep it around 3, and then use the OD808 to kind of push it to the sweet spot.

    I know this is sort of an old video, but I'm curious: is a boost completely necessary? I plan on getting some iteration of the DSL, and I don't think there's anything wrong with using an overdrive, but I don't want to sacrifice my clean channel

  • @michaelbarber1123
    @michaelbarber1123 5 лет назад

    Sell it and buy a DSLHR and 6 button PEDL-91016 (making the amp 4 channels), add KT77's and NOS preamp tubes and it sounds better than a JCM2000. Adding a choke makes it even closer to a 2203.

    I've always thought of this as more of the successor to the JCM 2000. It has the same feature set. I have a JCM 2000 and it sounds pretty damn similar to this. Only difference is the reverb is digital not spring. Also the half power mode

    • @jasper_of_puppets
      @jasper_of_puppets 7 лет назад +2

      It's not a "successor" to the JCM 2000... it essentially *is* the JCM 2000. The difference, aside from a few new features, is basically that it's an affordable, made-in-Asia remake of the UK-made DSL100. The successor to the JCM 2000 is the JVM series.

    Ag, Really digging the review channels. Just discovered it and have been going through them all. You have a trusting quality about you whereas I don't feel like you have a motive behind the review. Any way I had the 40DSL and really liked the tones but every time I went to the low E it was very muddy and the bass encompassed the rest of the sound. I tried switching through 3 guitars and finally after a few weeks sold it off. Do you experience anything like this? I really liked it but made any chugging impossible. I'm wondering if it might have been the speaker. Thanks in advance. Oh and BTW, How do you get all your gear? What is your day job?

    • @agufish
      @agufish  8 лет назад

      haha cool man, I figure if I'm not honest, then what's the point? So I found the DSL series harder to dial in than a 6505 or a Dual Rectifier, and it could get pretty muddy or tinny quickly, but once I found the right settings it sounds awesome! I haven't tried the combo version, so I couldn't tell you if it was the speaker or not, but it works well with my Mesa 2x12 and Two Notes Torpedo Live without getting overly boomy. Did you try it with an external speaker cab?

Whether they're any better than the DSL100H for the high-gain and clean that you're looking for, I have no idea. All I can say is the DSL100H is incredibly underrated by the Made In UK purists. And they laughed at how folks think it's any less just cause it's not assembled in the UK. It's all British parts and all British circuit my friend.... the tone speaks for itself.
      its only ASSEMBLED in Vietnam.... So what?.. 3rd world countries assemble most everything this days.

    I saw you playing the Ultra Gain Channel on the Lead 2 with the volume and gain at around 3 o clock. Do you do that bc you dig the power amp distortion more or does your dsl get incredibly muddy as if it was choking like mine? Everytime i scoop the gain to more than 3 o clock it chokes my low ends (no problem doing that with the volume, but it gets incredibly loud if i do so)... The good side effect was that i got to know the power amp section better and now know that this is where the good old marshall sound comes from and i am digging it. but it bugs me that i cant turn the gain up to get that rectified metal sound.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  8 лет назад +1

      I actually have the gain at around 3 or 4 on the dial (so like 9 or 10 o'clock). I generally don't dial in a ton of gain for any amp, and prefer to crank the volume a bit and use something like a Tube Screamer to really push that power section. Generally, to my ears it's just clearer and ballsier. When I crank the gain on my particular Marshall, I tend to find it doesn't really get muddy, but it does get fuzzy and grainy. The DSL is pretty finicky when it comes to dialing in tone, and I don't think I could ever get it to sound quite like my Dual Rectifier; it has it's own sound.

      haha... and now I've switched out the Bugera for a proper US-made 6505+ and picked up a Jet City 100HDM :P
      I think you'll love the Marshall. It's a freaking beast. If it was the only amp I owned I'd be perfectly happy with it. And I use a Two Notes Torpedo live instead of a real cab, so the audio goes straight into my DAW and not through the entire building.

    • @monkeyxx
      @monkeyxx 7 лет назад

      All right, I just pulled the trigger! I couldn't have said it better than you did, "I have always wanted to own a marshall," that's my main logic here. Most of my other amps are bluesy, rock-ish, or whatever I need something that goes to 11, LOL. So this is my first step into big monster heads. I played a small marshall in a band I was in for a few months, with an OD pedal and a les paul knockoff, and I kind of got the bug. Also a big fan of Billy Corgan's work with heads similar to these. Very excited to see how it stacks up...pun intended.

    Our DSL40C came in a few days ago. It's amazing. How do you run your OD808 through the Ultra gain lead 2? Even the ultra gain lead 2 is already, uh, ultra gainy and distorted at low gains.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  8 лет назад

      I'm basically just using the OD808 with the tone and the gain all the way down. I'm just using the level control to boost the amp to its sweet spot. If you add any gain or tone to Lead 2 it'll probably sound like garbo lol

    • @Hzuuuu
      @Hzuuuu 8 лет назад

      +Agufish That's what I read a lot of people telling to do. Makes me really curious, I probably should invest in a better distortion pedal, than just relying on the UM300 lol. I'm thinking of maybe the MXR Super Badass, although the 808 is probably the safest choice. :p

    • @agufish
      @agufish  8 лет назад

      I've never tried a UM300 so I can't really say, but overdrives are different to distortion pedals. Distortion will get you that high-gain, saturated sound from a clean channel, whereas overdrive pedals tend to be lower-gain and really just drive the amp harder. With the DSL Ultra Gain channel, you definitely don't need a distortion pedal, but it is always worth your while to invest in a Tubescreamer (I suggest either the TS9 or the OD808X). I have demos of both.

      +Agufish Oh hey, that's the missing little piece of information that I need. :D Thanks a lot. I've watched your TS9 demo, didn't notice the OD808X though, should be very interesting!

      Deo Favente I run a Boss SD-1 in front of mine at all times (lead2 and clean). Volume maxed, tone at 12 o'clock and gain at 9 o'clock. i keep the gain on the lead channel at around 11 o'clock. i also run an MXR smartgate immediately after the SD-1.

    I just got this amp earlier this year, and the distortion channel sounds mushy and fat. A tubescreamer tightens it right up, but on it's own, it sounds like a fat mess. I'm a complete noob with tube amps, could my preamp tubes be bad? I changed the main tubes when I bought it and there was no change in sound.

    • @blackfridaymetalyeg
      @blackfridaymetalyeg 6 лет назад +1

      No it's just kinda how this amps ultra gain channel behaves. As soon as you get the gain much past 4 it starts to sound mushy and looses it's attack and sharpness. It's got tons of gain but past 4 it's not very useable. That doesn't mean it's not a killer amp for metal though, just take your gain to 4 or 5 and throw a TS9 or 808 in front of it with the volume maxed. You get all the sharpness and attack but with the heavy tight "chunk" of your palm mutes all together while keeping the bottom end from sounding boomy. Really a killer metal tone! Pair it with some V30's and you're there!

      Black Friday this is some great advice!! I've been searching for a new amp.

    • @blackfridaymetalyeg
      @blackfridaymetalyeg 6 лет назад

      It's a great amp, really versatile! It is an unmistakably Marshall sounding amp, so if you dig a more British sounding amp, it's almost too good of a price point to pass up. My main touring rig is a JVM 210H and 1960A cab when we're on the road, but if we needed to save space or if we were playing some really small clubs where stage space was a premium I wouldn't hesitate to take my DSL 40C instead of the JVM head/cab. Both can get equally as good really heavy rhythm tones for pretty much any style of metal. The DSL just requires an OD in front of it and the JVM doesn't.

      +Rich Auclair it's less harsh and thicker than a JCM2000 but there's a reason I use the Dual Rec for most of my demos and not the DSL100H. Good amp for the money, but the Dual Rec reigns supreme Ronny ears.

    Whats up Agufish. Im new to tube amps but am ready to spend about 1200.00 on a amp head and cabinet. Ive been thinking about the Marshall DSL 100h. How do you set up that sound? I have a pedal board and currently play through a Blackstar and use some pedals in front of the amp and some through the effects loop. I use a clean channel and have a tubescreamer in front of the amp. I also use the Blackstars own high gain presets and just use a carbon copy for some delay. But like you ..I think a Marshall in the background is cool. Any suggestions on pedal combinations you might suggest to obtain a really, or the best, high gain sound from the Marshall DSL?

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад

      1200 is a decent budget, especially since you can get a used Mesa 2x12 for about 300 if you're lucky, then you have a lot of choices for amps. If you're set on the Marshall, personally, I use the Lead 2 voicing on the Ultra Gain channel with the gain moderately low, then use a Tubescreamer to boost it, and it sounds awesome. A lot of people can't stand the Lead 2 voicing though, and use the Lead 1 with a TS. I would look up Gary Holt's (Slayer) settings. I've seen them on the Internet somewhere, and he knows how to get a killer tone out of this amp.

    • @robcirice6447
      @robcirice6447 7 лет назад

      Thanks man. I'm not actually set on the Dsl 100h. But since Ive seen decent reviews on it, and theres not a model that I can test out anywhere near my area I thought it would be the best choice. Just on your experience with amps. Would you suggest anything else that MIGHT be a better choice in terms of reliability, noise feedback, and tone? 1oo watts at least tuber
