    Man, this Marshall slays! I especially loved the 7-string mix as well! Fantastic work Jon! Btw, I have the 20 watt version and I find that a 7 band EQ pedal can help eliminate the excessive brightness in the clean channel. Keep up the great work!

    Ive had mine since launch. I added a Hammond 194G choke (plexi style choke) on a switch so i can select the choke or the stock resistor. And i added a switch to the ultra channel that selects stock 100hr , stock 100h (bright cap added back in, its removed on the 100hr) and a split the difference bright cap. It really is an excellent amp and i truly love mine. I build guitars, pedals, amps tube an ss and restore tube radio receivers. And my last amp build was a Fender Champ that has a switchable output section (either stock 6V6 output tube or EL84 output tube) and that champ clone in stereo with the DSL100hr is probably my favorite tone ive ever gotten. The DSL100hr is just crazy versatile.

    I have an old 2005 DSL100 and I absolutely love it. It's such a versatile amp which when you add a tubescreamer in front of it to push the level you can do almost anything. Depending on guitar it really changes to compliment it. Like with an EMG 81 and the tubescreamer with the level pushed and the gain down on the red gain channel you can get amazing heavy Killswitch Engage-esque tones but my HSS strat with a Dimarzio Tone Zone you can dial in that perfect 80's hair tone. Great video and nice to see how my old girl stacks up against the latest model.

    Im using the dslhr 20 live now with a very loud metal band. I brought my kemper home for home use :-) This amp is killer! I Boost the dsl with a Mini Tube Screamer - Volume full, gain 0 and tone in the center. This thing crushes. Before the kemper I was playing a Mesa Mark V. 20 watts is plenty and you can crank the crap out of it to get that killer push

    I'm sitting right next to my DSL100HR right now, and honestly I couldn't be happier with it.
    I can dial in so many good tones pretty effortlessly, like having AC/DC to Slayer on Tap. They did a solid job finding a nice balance between Super Lead and JCM to make an affordable all around kick ass and admittedly modern Marshall. They took flack for their efforts to clean things up and try to get a modern tone with the JCM 900, and Valvestate, but they were absolutely successful this time around. The Emulated cab is pretty fantastic as well when I DI for recording and when I run my EQ through the FX loop I have a whole other level of tones to play with.

    Sounds kiiler man! I've had a JCM2000 DSL100 for several years. It's clean tone is really fantastic, especially on crunch mode. It's quite fun to run with KT-77's in the power section too -- similar to Billy Corgan's trick of running KT-88's in a JCM800. I think the red channel on the old JCM2000 is a little thinner than this DSL, but it thickens up nicely when you run OD2 at low gain.

    • @BillyEatWorld
      @BillyEatWorld 2 года назад +4

      The green channel on the original JCM2000 DSL is much better than the green channel on this one though, and the green channel is really the stand out feature. It's the closest to a JCM 800 you can get in a modern marshall.

      @@BillyEatWorldi know this is an old video but ive found the opposite. My dsl100hr will do plexi and Jcm800 very convincingly. I think the amp is thicker and more harmonically abundant in comparison. The good thing is with ears, we can both be right.

      It is just too much, I was wondering if there was a Marshall for maybe 1000 to 1400 USD that was better than the DSL100, I am also looking for a cab to the amp, as well as a multi effects pedal with usb interface sound card, and a new better guitar.
      Maybe then you understand why spending 1900USD on just a top with my experience and for what more I need could be a problem and more than I need right now

    For the money this is a great top, enough even for bigger venues. I am looking to buy this and combine it with the Marshall MR1960 B Cab. It is still 1500 € together, so not cheap in any regard but a lot cheaper than the British Marshall amps and cabs.
    I am playing mostly Iron Maiden and heavy metal like that but also more extreme stuff like death metal and when I tried the DSL 100 HR I thought it was perfect for that kind of music and probably a lot of other music as well. Gain is perfectly enough I did not need any extra metal guitar pedal or anything, just a tube screamer was enough.

    technically, the 20W version can achieve similar crunch tones by putting an OD pedal in front of the amp with the gain at 9 o'clock and the volume dimed, which would also be useful for getting high gain metal tones in front of the high gain channel, effectively turning a 2 channel amp with no mode switch into a 4 channel amp, or more accurately 2 channel amp with dual mode switching.

    I have this head and it rocks! Mine is about to go in the shop though. Something happened and going from classic gain super clean channel to OD1 and back it seems to get stuck in a high distortion mode. I'm just hoping its not going to cost more than a couple of hundred bucks to get fixed. But I paid $500 for it used and rocked on it for abut 2 years every day. Just bought some new tubes for $200 and now this? But even though I will have not spent what they're asking for this head now at $1,200.00US new. It was about $800US when I picked the head up. So it already went up in price nearly $500US. It's an amazing amp and every channel is usable. You really want to kick this amp in the balls use a boost pedal and compressor for sustaining leads. It really gives it more life.

    ive had this amp since its release somewhere in 2018 and it has served me well.
    i must say that it can be quite tricky to find some settings that sound good on all channels.
    my biggest issue with the amp is the effects loop, just turning it on with just a patchcable in it somehow kills the tone and there is a very noticable volume drop.
    it has ridiculous amounts of gain on the ultra channels that ive tamed a bit by putting a ECC823 in V1 that made it much more usable on the ultra gain while keeping the classic channels the same.
    recently ive put a 12BZ7 in v3 that has done wonders as well.
    also swapped to KT77s after the stock tubes started to drift apart in the bias.

    • @BrunoGomes666
      @BrunoGomes666 2 года назад

      I'm actually having the opposite issue: not enough gain. The valves on the pre are a red marshal (JJ?) and all others are those chinese gold marshall's. With high output active pickups, using the ultra channel with volume and gain at max, OD1 (green) is very weak on palm mutes, and when changing to the red channel, it gets just a little better. From all the demos I've seen, I was under the impression that I should get more gain. Now, I've actually put on one of the chinese golden ones in V1 and the red one in the PI, but I still wasn't able to test it yep. In any case, I also ordered one Tung Sol to see if it makes a difference.

    mmh, I wonder about reliability between UK vs Vietnam build amps. I have DSL and ORIGIN ( both vietnam builds), both been flawless so far. I also have JVM 210, that failed and needed to back for warranty fix. That is very different to some of my mates, e.g. one ended up with 3 DSLs failing within 1-2 month of getting them ( replaced by under warranty multiple times ) and I hear that is more common. I love the sound of all of them. different but great.

    I run two of these with a 1960A...nice..I use the ultra gain red channel nearly maxed ..In fact I am just shy of diming every knob across the board apart from master (which isn't far off). Then it truly slays! Its like BOOM. It is amazing with my base quad with V30S but for gigging I go 412A

    best marshall besides the jvm and the jcm 800kk, just 650€ new here in germany, i got all of them. the dsl works unbelievable well with pedals, even better as some boutique clean amps i have tested so far. it has the typical marshall "cleans" that sound like a tamed distortion channel so not really clean but i love it

    I love my DSL100HR... when it works. In the 3 years I've owned it, it's gone down multiple times. Something is clearly wrong with it where it keeps frying tubes or something. The switch went bad at one point, the FX loop was funky, both issues required servicing. Still looking for what's wrong with the tube issues, but Sweetwater is replacing it when more come in. Maybe I just got a lemon, but I've had nothing but issues with it.

I am interested in using mine for streaming performance and have all means to do so when using emulated out which has not gotten great reviews, the rest of the amp, I like you rate it really high for bang for buck for sure!

    This makes me sad I had to sell my DSL 40 a few years ago. Still, maybe in the future I can grab one of the new R editions. The DSL is some of the best metal tone on a budget that's all tube I've ever played. It also does good with the mellow stuff too :)
    Cheers

    Hello John, excellent video as always, I just bought this same Marshall DSL 100HR and I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me clarify.
    The first is that it is not clear to me how I should use the Standby Button when starting or turning off this amplifier?
    since the Standby button has 2 positions and not 2 as they usually come in other models. how do you do it and how long to wait to use it correctly and safely for valves?
    The other question is: For an MX412B Cab, which Loudspeakers jack should I connect it to? in the 16ohm?
    Thnaks for your help John.

    Awesome playing, killer riffs, and excellent review, great job! Tough question for you, if you HAD to choose between the DSL100HR and the JCM800 SC20H to use in the studio to record heavy tones and fast aggressive playing which would you choose and why?

      I picked the DSL40CR for recording my EP vs my JCM800. Pretty much all eq knobs center into a DV77 loaded cab for both channels., you can’t beat that. However, use a compressor for clean, and some overdrive for green :)

    • @X9Eric
      @X9Eric 2 года назад

      @@rockstarme1020 pretty torn, I used to have the DSL100HR, replaced it with an EVH 5150iii EL34 50 watt. But I'm looking for that "Marshall" sound and it's ability to cut through in a mix. Would love the JCM800 2203, but can't justify the expense for 1 amp. Very encouraging to hear you used it on an EP! Did you have the SC20H?

    hi. thanks for the review. had one of those and liked its sound. had to sell i though cause there was a "delay"-time when switching channels. not suitable for live use if there had to be a quick channel switch.... first part of next sound/note was swallowed. can u confirm this issue or was i too meticulous? hoping for ur opinion. regards
