Simone never fails to bring her A game with her vocals, outfits, makeup, and overall performance. Another great track from a top tier band. They never cease to amaze me
The full real orchestra completely improved the sound. Plus the Simone's mature voice, the reminiscences to the first albums and the production, make this song a fresh and totally perfect work. The full album will be amazing. Less is more.
bradleypariah You couldn’t be more wrong. Look up “Epica 8 studio vlog part 5”. Covid restrictions have also made it harder to film in large groups, so chances are they couldn’t have put it in the video even if they wanted to. That wraparound keyboard is how they do some of the orchestral parts live.
To be honest I never really notice when a song has a real Orchestra vs when they don't. Like Fleshgod Apocalypse is my 3rd favorite band ever I love them, but I've seen complaints on some videos about them not using a 'real' Orchestra and I honestly can't tell, sounds to me like it's got violins and all that stuff in it.
3:15 I'm still so impressed with this part! I've heard positive comments about this even from non-EPICA fans! A relatively complex riff! (especially for a single). It is simply awesome! Certainly not one of my favourite songs, but still. Plus, that part about the Demiurge... Interesting.....
I love that riff too! However, it's far from their most complex guitar work. It's not a too difficult riff, but it's a nice balance since the tails in the riff are kind of a left turn from where one would normally think the riff was supposed to go. But that only shows how good riff-writers this band has, to balance simple/intermediate ideas with a few complex licks in their riffs ;)
Less choirs, switching melodies/breaks, singing simultaneously, Simone's "opera-like"-voice - all those things I missed a bit in the last 2 albums. So, I'm very happy that they brought it back (like in the earlier albums before "The Quantum Enigma") and I hope that the other songs of the upcoming album will be also like that. I'm very excited! :)
Epica is The symphonic metal. They just are. So happy they are back with new music. The song really flourishes after the drum solo. And what a solo! This is probably the most underrated drummer in the whole universe. He is highly technical and fast and yet can play anything. Step aside Duplantier ;) What really tickled me though was Mark. How good he is.. His growls are so much deeper. Not just here but live too. He really really progressed. The cape he is wearing is very well done, perfect to convey the message in the lyrics. Happy that they upped up his wardrobe for once. Simone is the goddess though. The camera loves her. Even in her shyness. I know people love to say she is this and that but I keep stressing how good and smooth her technique is..She slides through contemporary to classical vocals in a blink of an eye with a beautiful crystalline tone. She is that good. Her outfits are probably the best I have ever seen in any music video. She looks sacred, primeval, yet alluring. It reminds me of the ones from Behemoth, the ones made by Katarzyna but with a mix of Bibian blue there. So damn good. These guys carry symphonic metal on their backs. I am beyond excited for what is to come. Very inspiring so far.
You're right about Mark's growls. Some say that electronic effects make his growl sound more solid on records. But I've heard him growl live, and he pulls it off far better than others do. Its a very difficult thing to do properly, and he is one of the few. Most growlers sound corny, like teenagers with too much angst. But you're right, Mark's growls have seriously matured. Amazing.
I have been saying famously for awhile that EPICA is THE STANDARD BEARER for all fem & symphonic metal. The Dark Element is marvelous and Anette Olzon is always solid but not on this plane of metal existence.
@@LigeiaNoire sorry but the growls of Mark live are bit weak compared to what other growlers can pull of live. It's sounds good in studio but in the live versions he doesn't sound as good. For me Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis is the king of deep growls. Live he is amazing in both growls and clean vocals. There are literaly hundreds of extreme singers that can pull better growls live than Mark jansen.
I´m a huge believer that Epica always overdo themselves. Each album is better than the last. They are very great musicians, amazing people, they know what they want as a band and they INVEST on it big time. This band always amazes me. Congratulations on another great single and video! Can´t wait to hear and enjoy the whole thing next year (IF we survive 202 of course lol)
After several watches, I think the video might be hinting some of the songs in the album: - Abyss of time: 00:02:40 - The Skeleton Key: 00:04:32 - Seal of solomon: 00:02:46 - Gaia (the greek goddess of nature): the naked lady in the woods. - Code of life: 00:00:39? or 00:02:20? - KoH 3 - The Antediluvian Universe: 00:01:39? - Twilight Reverie - The Hypnagogic State: 00:04:51? - Omega - Sovereign of the Sun Spheres: Simone's golden outfits? Also, on an interview Simone said there was a light & darkness topic going around the album: Simone and Mark b&w outfits / the Ballet dancers.
EVEN the Artwork of the album cover is full of Duality !! You see Light and Darkness, the album is called Omega and there's an Alpha on the Maze wall ( Meaning Beginning and End), the Egyptian cross means the duality between life and death, more precisely life after death. It can also mean duality between male and female.
The only band where EVERY single song is a wake up call. A light in the darkness. A truth brought forth. An Illumination. An Integration. Transcendence.
@@gc0009 ''Bop'' doesnt even have anything to do with pop music. Its just slang for ''a good song'', similar to how somebody could describe a song to be a 'banger', a 'jam', a 'slapper' and so on.
I'm usually not a fan of using growls in Symphonic Metal. But the song is very well balanced. The contrast between the two voices, the symphonic orchestrations and the chorus make this song a masterpiece. This is Epic waiting for the album.
@@Krasnoe912 Absolutely agree. But you can balance and contrast the high soprano voices with a heavy instrumental. I dont think Growls is absolutely necessary, but it can bring a bonus if it is properly executed, I think the most important element is the orchestration and how the song is mixed in the studio. Here is the difference between Big Bands and the rest.

@@captainfantastic3490 Yeah, you're so right. I actually enjoyed Human Nature from Nightwish, but I deeply missed the orchestra and the sumptuous arrangements.
@@captainfantastic3490 I'd say Epica are symphonic metal's last bastion. Nightwish are more about making spectacular orchestra and choirs than metal now, and WT... I don't know what they are anymore. lol But Epica remained true to their original sound throughout the years.

@@ivanaeskic1615 I'd say Nightwish is stuck in a loop too. The theme of Human :|: Nature is similar to their previous album. It is time for them to Make a kick ass Symphonic Metal album like Epica and raise the volume of Floor jansen's voice in studio tracks.
This video reminds me of old folklore myths from some villages in Greece, where men are lost in the mountains after following women that turned to be nymphs (like fairies) ,or they return deff, or blind or even crazy, mumbling that they saw the old gods (12 Olympian) shimmering with gold. Beautifull work, well done Epica!
Wow, I haven't listened to any recent Epica stuff for years, and this track takes me right back to The Phantom Agony and Consign to Oblivion. Loving it!

Epica you guys are killing it and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@chacmiranda1012 Yea for sure! So after listening to the song first and really soaking up the lyrics. In my opinion I personally feel that the songs about healing, coming out of rockbottom, and coming out of the darkness is always possible because you are "the master of your life", so in a way awakening spiritually. You create your own "book of life" through thoughts and energy that you put out into the universe. I feel that this song is very spiritual and encouraging for other people that you can do this, you can create the life you want, and get out of the dark place you're in no matter how old you are, or where you are at in life! So music video wise when I saw the old man, I felt that he was probably living in a dark place and his soul hasn't fully awakened because of self doubt on maybe past experiences in life that could have put him in that dark place, or a lack of understanding what it means to awaken. But when he saw the woman, something called to him to follow her, in a way the woman can represent a thought that could help pull you from said dark space. The symbol encasing him, is a metaphysical symbol called the Star Tetrahedron. Epica has used many symbols like this in the past and have used the meaning of said symbols within their music. I could honestly go on about the meaning of the symbol but I will give you the short version of what I think it mean specifically for this video (also I'll link you the exact meaning to the symbols. I think it means that he's awakened out of the dark side and found the light, the one thought that pulled him out of the "Abyss of Time" (haha see what I did). So he kind of looks like he went through a spiritual awakening. There are other parts of the video that have a lot of symbolism too, but I thought I'd talk about the most obvious one that can be a little confusing. If you have any questions on other parts of the video, I'm down to share my opinion on other parts of the video. I hope that made sense, also again this is my interpretation of the song and video. Also here's the link talking about the symbol I talked about earlier: www.crystalwind.ca/eureka-amazing/meta-science/sacred-geometry/metaphysical-star-tetrahedron
A new song in the style of the first two albums? I'm dreaming? :O It looks like Attack on Titan has helped restore the freedom and artistic creativity of the past. It's amazing, I'm in the hype for the new album!
@@antonioolivares497 The first two Epica albums for me are pure magic. I don't know what happened, but although the others that followed are technically good, it seems that the "aura" has changed and I was no longer excited. On the SnK/AoA album, this feeling rekindled, and now it holds fast with this single. I believe that less dissonant melodies with good timing for gutturals is what most impacted me positively. The structure and atmosphere also seem to follow a more natural flow.
@@presskeytoplay To me the newer albums felt more versatile. I try to listen to anything from pre-Design your universe and I feel like the same song is stuck playing for 30 minutes. They feel a bit unimaginaive. On the contrary, Quantum enigma for example brings something new to the table with every single song. Riffs are heavy, symphonic instruments are beautiful, Simone's voice is better aged, and so on and so forth. Also those "first two" really feel like generic symphonic metal. Design your universe was the time where Epica started doing something REALLY unique. They were unique before that too, but after DYU they became the rulers of symphonic metal, precisely because they were able to move forward, and start experimenting. But this is my opinion on the matter. I do not mean to belittle yours, I can completely understand where are you coming from

I've known about this song since yesterday. After repeated listens, it keeps getting better. It was good to start with, of course. It seemed like one of their more 'vanilla' songs (but ONLY by Epica standards) so putting it along side their older stuff, except with more modern production and orchestra. But repeated listens makes me think its more unique. It definitely has its 'own album' feel. Its far more complex musically, and in structure, than upon first listen. Its just its done subtely. Its like a 'standard' song in surface feel, then you realize its far more than that. This song is a real enigma to me, and I can't quite put my finger on it. The performances are truly flawless though. There's nothing I'd change about it, and I'm a very harsh critic usually. Oh and I adore the deep voiced interlude. The way he says 'the void' is so deep and scary. Usually this voice sounds corny, but its pulled off flawlessly here.
I'm loving how Epica can still sound so different after 7 albums. In all seriousness, this one song has elements from a lot of them which is stunning me every time I dare listen to it. Thank you Epica for bringing such shining light into these dark times. It is always an honor to listen to your music and to grasp hope like I did 13 years ago. Ω Much love from Canada Ω

@Jimb0 i couldn’t go that far back because I didn’t discover Epica until Requiem for the Indifferent had already come out .😅 not my fave, but it does have some really cool tracks 😊
@Jimb0 yeah I like Requiem too though not as the same level as Consign to Oblivion and Design Your Universe. For me Quantum Enigma marks the new era of the band. However, this song somehow took us back to the Consign to Oblivion era with references from their newer sound and formula.

Replace all thoughts from the abyss with cosmic energy

Fill out the tree of your life
We are rooted deep in the darkness
And keep growing towards the light
Be without your fears

Search for stillness deep inside
One thought that grows in the abyss of time
Fills up the vast space with matter and life
Free of the darkness that fetters the soul
Find at the source the end of your goal
Find the spark in me
See life beyond the dream
Replace your darkest emotions with pure divinity
Ignite the flame in me
Unite with your inner light
We should free ourselves from the shadows
And the bondage of the night
Be without your fears
For a thousand years
Be the master of your life
One thought that grows in the abyss of time
Fills up the vast space with matter and life
Free of the darkness that fetters the soul
Find at the source the end of your goal
Fight back your fears forever
Be the master of your life
Learn to unlearn
In the beginning there was a timeless, space-less, nothingness
And into that nothingness came a thought, purposeful, all-pervading
So ended the Void
Surge, the Demiurge
Shaper of a false universe
Search that deadly urge
Your walls of self-protection are
Walls of self-imprisonment
Be without your fears
For a thousand years
Search for stillness deep inside
Strive for harmony in duality
To revise the book of life
There was one thought that grew in the abyss of time
It filled up the vast space with matter and life
Freed from the darkness that fettered the soul
We found at the end our reason, our goal
We march on
We're counting down
To singularity
While we drown
We're moving on
To master wisdom
To be free

The full real orchestra completely improved the sound. Plus the Simone's mature voice, the reminiscences to the first albums and the production, make this song a fresh and totally perfect work. The full album will be amazing. Less is more.
Indeed! Having a full orchestra definitely gave the sound a new spin! Also those visuals are amazing, right?
@@bradleypariah Épica vlog #5
bradleypariah You couldn’t be more wrong. Look up “Epica 8 studio vlog part 5”.
Covid restrictions have also made it harder to film in large groups, so chances are they couldn’t have put it in the video even if they wanted to. That wraparound keyboard is how they do some of the orchestral parts live.
However, the synth is necessary to make it sound similar to the studio version in the concerts. And that includes the real Orchestra sounds~
It's indeed a very cool riff. Most likely very hard to play it so clean, but that's where this band definitely excels.
OMG this duet between Simone and Mark outstanding. Remembering The essence of silence.
Yeah its really good. Their voices are so contrasting, yet they gel very well here. It feels like a real duet.
X2..
Also reminds me a bit of Victims of Contingency - Mark growling and Simone reacting with her angelic voice in the first verses

The forest : "..Here we go again"
That's hilarious 😆
:Dd
LMAO yes
I guess there were no empty warehouses available.
Don't forget random castles and abandoned quarries.
Step aside Duplantier ;)
What really tickled me though was Mark.
@@kevingthompson14 indeed. No band has it all like them.
@@dannyb3663 there's a few only that can pull it off live. Mark seriously progressed.
Also, on an interview Simone said there was a light & darkness topic going around the album: Simone and Mark b&w outfits / the Ballet dancers.
Wow great catches. It's very possible.
EVEN the Artwork of the album cover is full of Duality !! You see Light and Darkness, the album is called Omega and there's an Alpha on the Maze wall ( Meaning Beginning and End), the Egyptian cross means the duality between life and death, more precisely life after death. I'm usually not a fan of using growls in Symphonic Metal. But the song is very well balanced. The contrast between the two voices, the symphonic orchestrations and the chorus make this song a masterpiece. This is Epic waiting for the album.

Could you share what you think about symbolisms?

Perfection as always 🖤 Epica never disappoint
Usually this voice sounds corny, but its pulled off flawlessly here.

symphonic metal has it all, it's an exciting, epic, majestic, unique genre that makes your skin crawl, it's powerful, it's like listening to an adventure or a story
Hell yeah
hell yeah
Yeah hell
is it though?
For me, this is the best single by Epica since Unleashed
I remember when Epica dropped their first single for The Quantum Enigma (The Essence of Silence) and being absolutely blown away and was VERY excited for the album. When the single for The Holographic Principle (Universal Death Squad) came out I was a little less impressed but still preordered the album like a good fan haha. This song got me on the same level as TQE. The hype is real!!!
Universal Death Squad is much better than everything on TQE.
@@bluehope42 preference I guess haha. TQE is my fave Epica album so far
@Jimb0 i couldn’t go that far back because I didn’t discover Epica until Requiem for the Indifferent had already come out .😅 not my fave, but it does have some really cool tracks 😊
También yo creo que TQE sigue siendo insuperable hasta hoy. THP me pareció como un disco lleno de ideas que no cupieron en TQE.
@Jimb0 yeah I like Requiem too though not as the same level as Consign to Oblivion and Design Your Universe. For me Quantum Enigma marks the new era of the band. However, this song somehow took us back to the Consign to Oblivion era with references from their newer sound and formula.
the lyrics, music, choir, vocals, composition. everything. this is everything. this is what we needed in 2020. thank you!!! 😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️
AMAZING as always. A LONG time Epica fan here, right back to the first album. As much as I love the older albums, wow, this new album is gonna be one of their best! I can just feel it!
Call me old fashioned but I love the CD format! Preordered the 4-pack already! Select album, play from beginning to end as the artists created it, enjoy! Especially with the thought behind Epica's albums - loving re-listening to the back catalogue this year and now Abyss of Time - & can't wait for Omega! So happy to support them with the album & hope to see the tour...
Physical all the way. It never gets old.
Every time I listen to Epica, I feel so empowered, so lifted up. This is some good shit. It makes me feel alive.
