You mean how quick his performance turned around. 2020: Won a race for a team that wasn't expected to while being 20th earlier in the race 2021: Helped his teammate win their first WDC by slowing down a 7 time world champion with defense 2022: Not Max, but he did solid enough for someone in the best car 2023: Barely held on to P2 in one of the most dominant cars in history (he was awful this year but people gave him the benefit of the doubt from 2020-2021) 2024: A second year of disaster in a row has shown a pattern, but this year he crashed the car needlessly a lot more
Checo was never that good in the first place. It took him 10years to win a race. Easy to look good when your car is a second a lap faster than the next car. The other teams finally caught up in 2024 hence Checos predicament. This is his real pace unfortunately.

To be fair RB's one driver, one priority approach has brought them great success, just like it did for Ferrari back in the 2000s. But whoever gets 'the other car' is facing an uphill battle.
@@fix0the0spade The car is built for Verstappen, so whoever has the closest driving skills will be the best fit. Tsunoda said he thought the car suited his driving style at post Abu Dhabi drive. But RB think Yuki has reached his potential and he still has issues with his emotions and pit crews not wanting to work with him, regardless of the Honda complication.
Neither of that. Redbull (Helmut Marko) has a specific agenda which is to make their young drivers academy great again. If they want, they could have signed Gasly back, Hulkenberg, etc. They want to keep putting drivers in the sister team and swap drivers.
On other hands, by paying 2 years of contracts to Perez it helps the RB publication keep stable compared to RB just release Perez by not continuing the contract. It prices worth to pay otherwise RB will keep Perez for the next 2 years.
Exactly! He was just reinforcing that he won't retire as a message to redbull, "you're going to have to buy me out, I won't quit". The mistake was offering him that contract to begin with.
It’s crazier to me that Kimi Antonelli is going straight into a Mercedes drive than Lawson potentially going to RBR. At least Liam has F1 experience. Its the “Piastri Effect”
I think there it makes more sense, Mercedes didn't want to do it this way but they don't want to lose him and didn't get other options who were willing to take a one year deal. And couldn't get him into another team. Red Bull have Lawson locked in for next year. Same with Yuki. They have seen two equally promising young drivers being promoted into the main team and struggle so why not just start off with Yuki and swap them half way if necessary.
This is the most reckless contract I think I’ve ever seen in F1. The team did absolutely nothing to cover themselves and gave everything to the driver. Heck even Lewis is contracted till the 31st of this month and can’t dawn anything Ferrari till after that date. I don’t get it.

Before Honda “left”, people talked about how Yuki was more or less a Honda driver, that they wanted a Japanese driver in one of the cars. I do wonder, despite the seemingly amicable departure of Honda, if RB is somewhat embittered toward Yuki as being emblematic of that relationship, which I’m sure cost the team dearly to try and save. Especially since all of RB’s success inspired Honda to return only after the door had closed between them and RB. I’m not saying whether or not this is righteous, I’m just saying that I find it odd not to hear more discussion about the politics between Red Bull, Honda, and Tsunoda.
That's basically the reason, people that don't consider it are just kidding themselves. He was a Honda driver 3 years before he joined the RB Junior program. He is basically allowed to stay until they leave Honda behind. You'll see thay no matter what happens they won't resign him next year.

I think its more so that they wanted to keep some experience in the second team. Putting Liam and Isack on Racing Bulls could lead to another HAAS nightmare scenario with Mick and Mazespin. Whereas by leaving Yuki at RB they at least have one known driver to measure performance off of.
You said it all in the last sentence of that clip. Yuki is only used as a benchmark. Liam Lawson is as fast as Yuki with no experience. Never had an off season. Being thrown in the deep end twice and told to swim
Yeah, challenging him by doing what? Opening his legs soon they said "let Max through". He never fought Max once on track. Every single time he had him behind, he got out of the way. It was all smoke and mirrors, he knew RB would never let him fight Max on equal terms.
Yuki is being rated as a #1 driver, and that is why they need him at Vcarb. They need a consistent driver who is a known entity that they can use as a benchmark for other drivers. Yuki doesn't want to be a #2 any more, and it could be difficult for Yuki to compete vs Max. I don't think Yuki is strong enough to be a 'must promote' to Red Bull type of driver, but he is a solid fast leader for VCARB.
@@upperjohn117aka So do you believe having an untested driver makes more sense? Especially at a time when all the other teams have caught up technically. They would risk the constructors again by placing a rookie in that seat?
Don't understand them shafting Yuki at every turn, he's been improving constantly in all aspects, he's now an experienced driver but one with room for growth, he's a perfect candidate for the promotion. Only time will tell how Lawson adapts i guess, but yeah feel bad for Yuki.
I’m not an expert, but I think that the main problem with RedBull is that they took Max as their main criteria (in terms of how fast did he showed results and was quick) and measured by him all other (unexpected) drivers. They are also looking at the drivers from PR perspective (so they can bring investors) and if they does not perform as good as Max (gifted) or don’t have a good financial back (like Checo and sponsors), RB just get rid of them. Also very sad for Yuki.
Is there any way we can ever get to a point where F1 drivers are chosen based on merit as opposed to sponsorships, favors, and catering to nationality?
That would require the FIA to outlaw F1 teams from having Driving Academies and treat the junior leagues like other sports and assign draft picks. The problem is racing is too expensive and not every team needs a new driver.
I agree, too, that Tsunoda deserves that Redbull seat more than Lawson. However, he could potentially become a Crash and PR nightmare for Red Bull when Verstappen starts mounting up the pressure on his performances, so they'd rather have young Lawson, who is calmer both on and off the track. That's my take.
Lawson outscored Tsunoda 8 to 6, out finished Tsunoda 7 races to 4, and 0 DNF’s to Tsunoda’s 3. Lawson was the safe choice and the results bear it out. Honestly I was surprised too until I dug out the numbers.
@@joshuasmith1197i think it is based on who will cooperate to the team for the championship but yuki still deserve the redbull eventhough he is non-cooperative

Wouldn't that just put them right into the exact situation you're talking about? If Lawson gets swapped back into alphatauri, then they'll still be stuck with 2 new drivers in their junior team.
@@justinlacek1481 if they do it at the end of next season then hadjar would have had 1 year and Liam 1 year and a couple of races. i don't know it's just a thought.
Lawson over yuki is pure stat's. Lawson is already extremely close to yukis lap times and gives better engineering feedback . So given yuki has 4 year more experience the gap between them should be bigger
Lawson gives me the impression of De Vries 2.0. Marko gets all worked up over a rookie that has a couple good races, and then they go all in and find out that the driver in question is aggressively mid.
I liked Checo, he’s been very resilient in a difficult environment…. Holding on to the end to negotiate the best exit with the hostile press and toxic environment shows grit.
Perez based on his 2023 and 2024 season showed he has no right to be on the grid. Stroll is unironically better at the moment, fucking Lance "I spun on formation lap and got beached" Stroll is less embarrassing. Only Zhou and Sargent have been worse then Checo but that's a bar so low it doesn't require an effort of jumping.
Perhaps the Honda influence is not as strong now being the last year of using the Honda engines. Perhaps, if they had the engines post 26, Tsunoda may have got the drive.
Lawson didn't out drive Yuki and he has a shitty personality that the PR teams are going to struggle to sell and you just know he's going to piss off Max
Givng Piastri a seat during his struggle time at Alpine in 2022 when Checo was showing signs of struggling and inconsistencies in a dominant car would have been a master stroke.
Very good! Only bit I think was missing was just what are the thoughts/whispers in the paddock about trialling Yuki? We've seen soo many young drivers promoted and burned in the top team and they didn't have the experience to cope. Yuki granted can be a bit emotional, but he's matured over time and he's quick so he's a safe bet. If he doesn't deliver on it, RB can always go back to Lawson as the backup as he's still got alot to learn.
How do you know Checo didn't have an opportunity to go to other teams? This didn't fall out of the sky Red Bull has made it known for a long time they wanted him out. If he held the stance that he had a contract and didn't want to have an exit discussion then that's kind of on him.
Well it makes sense, he would go from one of the best teams to at most a mid field team. So he would obviously keep backing himself saying "I can turn this around" for quite a while and then found himself looking at like 2 seats available and then none. Then you end up in like October or something when only Sauber and Alpine (If I remember correctly) had a seat open and maybe he approached them and they said no sorry.
I don't know to what extent Christian Horner's power goes, but seeing his act with Ricciardo and now Perez, I get the feeling that he's a bit more human than most other managers, that he cares more about friendship and comraderie than, say, Toto or Vasseur. I might as well be totally wrong, for sure.
I think you may be right. Especially with Ricciardo. Obviously he sees real talent, and although Perez hasn’t been performing we all know what he’s capable of when he’s in the right frame of mind. Not a Perez fan by any means but it is a shame to see his reputation tainted like that.
@ Yeah it just popped up i gathered they had internal knowledge but never liked the pundits jumping ahead, i was also thinking about the Honda switch aswell and probably just a snub but go Lawson good luck
A team like Cadillac might benefit from a driver like Checo. Don't know how well or level his technical feedback or understanding is, would guess quite decent. That kind of feedback, even in newer types of cars, could be extremely useful in pushing the project forward.
I don't understand the hate towards liam, he is a good driver, he has experience in DTM and Super formula has done well in both the series. He is a rookie that did not crash or make silly mistake this season. Came in mid season and was immediately on pace with yuki. It was exactly same or more than what bearman or colapinto did this year but they are praised and liam being shunned. I dont see people questioning kimi getting the mercedes seat when he is not even the top 5 in f2 this year.
Yuki has been there 4 years, how long do you give him to develop? Liam is as fast as Yuki or close enough to be considered comparable. There are a lot of rose colored glasses being warn by commentators
Yeah. 100%. I’m looking forward to some walk backs here. Lawson was better than Yuki pre F1 as well. He has a history of outdoing Yuki and people have already written him off. Hilarious!
I don't follow junior categories as much, but Liam was 11th and 5th in F3, 9th and 3rd in F2. Whereas Yuki was 9th in F3, 3rd in F2. Yuki also started formula racing one year later than Liam (2016 vs 2015). Yes, experiences in F1 is different from those in F2/F3, but overall Liam spent more time in racing series. The 4 years in F1 were just what he needed to mentally mature as a driver.
@@guicho271828 Lawson got 2nd in both DTM and super formula. Was insanely close to wining DTM but thanks to one of the most disgusting displays of sportsmanship he was denied.
I think Tsunoda’s Bahrain shenanigans on the cool down lap really sealed it for him in terms of not being rated highly enough to get the Red Bull drive. I’m interested to see Lawson, he’s got a level of maturity that Yuki didn’t have when he started out, he’s not afraid to make moves on track and he carries himself well. That’s what could lead him in great steed if he does drive for Red Bull. Gasly/Albon situation does make me sweat a little though.
You say that Lawson isn't as fast as Tsunoda. But in most of their qualis this year, Yuki has been less than 1 tenth ahead of Liam... Liam has been chucked in mid season whilst Tsunoda has been in F1 and in that team for 4 years now. I definitely don't think Yuki 'has the speed', and I don't think he's categorically faster than Liam, especially if Liam is given a proper pre-season
Sometimes drivers don't suit the car, look at 4 time champion Vettel when Ricciardo turned up. Perez didn't have a qualiying game despite having a nailed on car. I wouldn't be surprised if he did more overtaking than any other driver because of his poor qualiyfing AND having a space rocket for a car.
to be fair to Vettel, nobody except Merc got it right back in 2014. Danny Ric got 3 wins that season but all of them when the Mercs got problems. Vettel was very unlucky that year too. people always like to downplay Vettel for being bested by Danny Ric, but always forget what a farce the 2014 season was overall but for Mercedes. even the great Alonso was basically nowhere that season!
Yuki almost intentionally rammed his car into Daniel in the first race of the season when he was mad at team orders. after he did that there was no way he was going to the red bull team.
The biggest problem for Yuki is the switch from Honda to Ford in 2026. He came into F1 thank to the Honda engines, then Red Bull switching to Ford is what I see that makes Yuki's chances over
People are overrating Yuki so much. Four years of experience and just barely quicker than Lawson who only had 8 races to show for. Lawson has way more potential. Yuki has only beaten De Vries and Ricciardo, big deal. It's just unfortunate Visa didn't give Lawson a whole year to compete with Yuki.
Hot take: Perez will be replaced not by Yuki but by Lawson. This is a blessing in disguise for Yuki. Lawson will be even "worse" than Perez by virtue of Max Verstappen literally being (one of) the best driver F1 has ever seen and nobody could come close to him; Perez was actually driving the 4th or 5th-best car... to its capability. Lawson is much less experienced. Lawson's career will end at RBR and Yuki will find a seat at another team in the future.
Perez did not drive that car to its potential at all. Consistently three tenths down, how many Q1 (not Q2, but Q1) exits. He has scored less than 50 points in half of the season in a car that was on average 3rd best in that part of the season (and at its worst, 4th best), yet he has been beaten numerous times by drivers with slower cars and even RBR's junior team at times. Perez made a car that was a regular top 5 fighter look like a complete midfield car.
Nah Yuki hasn't got it going on at all, 3 seasons in a team and barely any faster than Lawson. Japanese diets consist of far too much soy, and their eyes don't let in as much light. There'll never be a Japanese world champion
lol the "he was actually driving the 4th or 5th best car" is some serious glazing. The standard to see the car potential is whoever extracts the most. That's Max. The car was the best until the midpoint of the season. After that it was the second or 3rd best car depending on the track. Because you are telling me that the 2023 car wasn't dominant? Because Pérez struggled with that car too. But this is what happens when you have two drivers with different driving styles and one is the center, in this case Max. The car will be made to suit him, Pérez has to adapt, but he couldn't and RB lost the title because of it. You just have to see how soon RB doesn't need Pérez, he starts to fall in performance. Because they start the season making the car somewhat good for Pérez too. But after that, the updates are made for the leader and center of the team, which is Max. There's a reason why only Ricciardo was able to beat Max, because they have the same driving style, the car suited both. But what happened when another driver arrived at the team and asked for the car to be changed to his style? (Gasly). Well, he got publicly shamed by Helmut saying "He wanted the whole car to be changed to suit him" or something similar. Again about Pérez, what happened after the first 5 races in 2023? The same that happened in 2024, Pérez suddenly starts struggling with the car. What a coincidence that is always when RB thinks they no longer need him. It worked in 2023 because the car was great and everyone else was still struggling. In 2024 they tried the same stunt and got burned, because Ferrari and McLaren evolved a lot. Max is one of the best, no doubt. He has a big talent. But trying to sell that is the same BS I heard with Alonso vs Massa. And the mistakes were the same. Two drivers with different driving styles and team centered on one alone. One rises to the top because everything is done for him. The other sinks like a stone because they can't extract the same out of the car.
@@The_Curious_Cat You lost me at "the car will be made to suit him". That nonsense is dismissed even by Perez himself. In 2023 the car was dominant and because of it, at a large distance, Perez finished 2nd. Max won the WCC title all by himself anyway, so it doesn't matter. RBR made the same mistake you made: thinking their car is good because Max makes it work. What RBR (and you) seem to casually forget is that Max has a history of making cars look better than they actually are. If RBR didn't have Max but instead they had Perez + Ricciardo, everyone would be agreeing that RBR had the 4th or 5th-best car, at best. In 2023: yes, the best car by far. In 2024: yes, in the first few races. In the remainder of 2024: no, they had a crappy car and Max just made it work regardless.
Dangerous approach, focusing so much on the lead driver! If he leaves……. 💩 hits the fan. Yes they need a good rear gunner, but to base on not putting pressure on Max is madness.
Dangerous presence my arse! He'll never be in F1 again. It was quite enlightening when you pointed out that he was team mates with Stroll. Perhaps that car was a championship winning car in retrospect.
Great Team Management Decisions of 2024: - Keeping Logan Sergeant for another year. - Giving Perez a 2 year contract early in the season. - Keeping Ricciardo so long at Red Bull for the old time's sake. - Lance Stroll - special case.
Lawson is fucked. Plain and simple. No experience and they put him as the second to a driver who whill rip his head off and shit in the neck hole the moment Lawson steps one toe past the line. That's what Maxi did to Perez, and the poor man never recovered. RIP in pieces Liam, I hope I'm wrong.
The underlying problem for Checo is that as the Red Bull car evolved, he was unable to adjust to the changes and keep his pace near to Max. This only shows how good Max really is as he was able to keep his pace near the pace of Mclaren and take advantage of the best characteristics of the RBR when on courses that favored the RBR. Yuki is very much like Checo in driver skill while Liam is new, young and has some experience already in the RBR. Liam is going to be the pick as he has the most potential to become better as the year progresses.
I think a big aspect of this is that, as the car evolves, whenever possible it evolves to suit Verstappen. Of course some evolution is going to happen because it's simply the better way, but I find it hard to believe that the Red Bull car isn't highly tailored to Max. With that in mind, it's not surprising that Perez doesn't perform well. In any sport where the equipment is custom-made for the competitor, another competitor would be at a disadvantage with someone else's equipment. I do think Max is a great driver (one of THE great drivers, potentially), but he's a great driver with a car that, as much as is possible, is tailor-made for him. On the other hand, Perez is a *good* driver who was stuck in a car made for someone else's strengths. IMO, Perez would, at best, always be a distant second to Verstappen. That he didn't live up to that expectation is partly on him as a driver and partly on Red Bull as a team.
9:30 Do you hear how you're selling Tsunoda? His feedback is good? He's gotten his emotions under control, mostly? What about results? He's fast? You can't point back at great overtakes or performances under great pressure. The Verstappen comparisons are such cope. RB knows exactly what they have in Tsunoda and that's why he didn't take Checos seat. He's average at best. He's definitely not better than the 2nd driver at Ferrari, McClaren or Mercedes. Lawson will sink or swim and he's been given the opportunity of a lifetime.
@@Matt04108 Your comparison makes no sense. But I guess Kimi has some talent. Bearmen too probably is better than Lawson, he is 19 but seems matured for his age. Lawson is slower than Yuki
Comparing Yuki to Max in his early F1 seasons is actually false. Even back then the consensus was that Max would be a world champion, he just had to calm his rough edges. I haven't seen any serious suggestion that Yuki is a world champion in waiting. The supposed comparison has happened, and Yuki is not Redbulls guy.
They should have swapped Checo for Daniel right after Ricciardo's purple patch. They would then have known who was better. Plus, given Checo a chance to regain his confidence at RB.
Nah maybe better cut perez before the second half of the season start, give Daniel chance in RBR and bring Liam for the rest of second half of the season in RB so if Daniel also doesn't work in RBR they can cut him too and Liam had so much time to show his skill in RB

Neither of that. Redbull (Helmut Marko) has a specific agenda which is to make their young drivers academy great again. If they want, they could have signed Gasly back, Hulkenberg, etc. They want to keep putting drivers in the sister team and swap drivers.

Yuki also started formula racing one year later than Liam (2016 vs 2015). Yes, experiences in F1 is different from those in F2/F3, but overall Liam spent more time in racing series.
@@mrgalaxy396 You are absolutely wrong by completely ignoring how extremely good Max is.
Max Verstappen is a career ending team mate. Yuki couldn’t handle the pressure without chucking all the toys out the cockpit.
Dangerous presence my arse! He'll never be in F1 again. It was quite enlightening when you pointed out that he was team mates with Stroll. Perhaps that car was a championship winning car in retrospect.
Well it was a copy of the dominant Mercedes car, so you might be right.
They resigned Checo to boost his confidence, to help him out... and now he's gonna take them to the cleaners for it.
Great Team Management Decisions of 2024:
- Keeping Logan Sergeant for another year.
- Giving Perez a 2 year contract early in the season.
- Keeping Ricciardo so long at Red Bull for the old time's sake.
- Lance Stroll - special case.
Let’s be honest, the gap between Tsunoda and Lawson wasn’t that big. Lawson is very new and calmer, and more room to grow.
And he's not being funded by Honda who is going to a rival for 26
I truly cannot fathom why Yuki is never given a fair shot for the redbull seat, what a shame!
If Tsunoda's emotions are keeping him from having that Red Bull seat there are several drivers on the grid that don't deserve seats either.
You are both going to have this exact conversation next year come the summer break. You both know why.
And now The Race has nothing else to do videos about.
Well, don't watch it then!
@@roo1314 You sure showed him
@@roo1314 yeah big stwong boi so pwoud
Spot on, chaps - absolutely baffling why Red Bull would ignore Tsunoda for Lawson
Lawson has the mind and the potential to be the next Max. Only Kimi might have it too. So I think RB did a good one here.
I think contract pay offs should come out of the cap. Teams should cop it when they commit and then uncommit.
It's sad that Checo (and this goes for a LOT of drivers on the grid) could not adapt to a very pointy car that was optimized for Max's driving style.
I get Scott's point, but I don't think current Yuki is even as good as 2015-16 vintage Max.
Checo got skills, his underperformance could have to do with the paygap between him and his team mate.
Lawson has 11 more starts and massively more experience than Antonelli, who bombed in F2.
Lawson and Andrea are both children. They need to leave.
How can you judge a kid who is just 18yrs old. Although he is been fast tracked he needs some time.
@@ultimateninjanoob1 they need time alright… to leave the sport.
@@ultimateninjanoob1 just comparing Lawson and Antonelli in top 4 teams, Lawson is more ready for it than Antonelli.
@@Matt04108 Your comparison makes no sense. But I guess Kimi has some talent. Bearmen too probably is better than Lawson, he is 19 but seems matured for his age. Lawson is slower than Yuki
Red Bull should have signed Sainz
They ripped it up cos he is USELESS!
A LONG time coming
I don’t think Checo could race 2026. If he has a payout for that year I am pretty sure he is not allowed to race for another team then
Those things will depend on details.
Not that it matters since Perez never had a set contract for 2026, it was a 1+1 deal.
They should have swapped Checo for Daniel right after Ricciardo's purple patch. They would then have known who was better. Plus, given Checo a chance to regain his confidence at RB.
How would Perez regain any confidence being relegated even more to a team that tanked in the later stages of the season?
Nah maybe better cut perez before the second half of the season start, give Daniel chance in RBR and bring Liam for the rest of second half of the season in RB so if Daniel also doesn't work in RBR they can cut him too and Liam had so much time to show his skill in RB
How much would it take to buy out gasly from alpine for Red Bull??
