Dazzling special effects by Ray Harryhausen highlight this thrilling sci-fi extravaganza about a Venusian monster who wreaks havoc in Italy. On its way home from Venus, a U.S. Army rocket ship crashes into the sea of Sicily leaving Colonel Calder (William Hopper of Rebel Without a Cause) the sole survivor...or so it seems. A sealed container is also recovered from the wreck and, when a zoologist (The Mark of Zorro's Frank Puglia) and his granddaughter (Joan Taylor) open it, the gelatinous mass inside escapes. Overnight, it grows into a horrific monster that has doubled in size. In desperation, Calder calls in the Army to help fight the monster, which has taken refuge atop the Coliseum in Rome. But it will take more than man's weapons to fight the evil forces of the unknown and save the world from destruction.

I was born in 1969. I remember watching this back when we had like three main TV channels (2, 11, 13) and a few on UHF. I think I may have seen this on either Ghost Host or Creature Feature. Lol, good times when you're like 10 years old seeing it.

The Ymir is one of Harryhausen's most tragic monsters; captured and brought to an alien world, wracked by uncontrollable transformation (growth) due to an alien atmosphere that must surely be causing it great pain, unable to understand or be understood by the strange native life, hounded and hunted at every turn despite being peaceful by nature and only attacking when first provoked (recall the lamb it spared, the dog, and the dumbass with the pitchfork), caught and experimented on, and finally killed.
4:10-4:13 This is exactly how that fight was seen in the trailer. But not with the women screaming & running for their lives. 5:15-5:17 Even this shot of the Ymir fighting with the Elephant also fits together without being cut for a couple seconds. 6:14-6:23 This too was seen in the trailer without being cut off for awhile.

It went from being slightly smaller than an elephant to something bigger than a giraffe, is there story i need to know how it got bigger or so it just looks more badass?
They didn’t do a good job explaining it. It had something to do with the earths atmosphere making it grow faster
