It is really interesting to see that, from films like this, the same basic principles of stop motion animation can be used to create movies like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings.
It bitch slapped that double headed dude into next week.the sound effects are hilarious but I have a real soft spot for these old types of fantasy movies.
All we need is Jim Ross' commentary. "Is that, is that an anchor? OH MY GOD, NO! He's smashing that cave up! There's no hope now. Wait, what is that? IT'S THE KRAKEN!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!"
ArmandtheWise it happens pretty much anywhere now the things that are hard to find is when you see a leprechaun fighting a gnome over a big pile of booze and women now that's what ya gotta look out for
LOL I laughed my head off when I seen the Irish man in the bottle because I'm Irish, just our luck to be stuck in a bottle but hey at least we can call the Kraken! :)
Mike Romney Yep, that couldn't be Harryhausen. Way too cheap, I mean really cheap. They look as if they're clay figures. Harryhausen used to make high quality models that you could pose in different positions, not that cheap clay crap.
I saw this as a kid in 1962.. I was fortunate that Turner's Classic Movie channel was showing it! I was in for a real treat! I loved this movie! I favorite episode is where the evil dictator turns into a Dragon !!!!!
Back then there was no frame grabbing software, so the animator couldn't really see what he had just shot until he or she got the film developed. Its a long and tedious process that requires a lot of patience so you got to give a bit of respect to these guys.
WolfGangGoblin LOL yea weird, same. something about it is entertaining, as hilarious as it looks it has some kind of charm or something that todays blockbusters dont really have. hm wonder what it is
Jim Danforth's animation carbon-copies Harryhausen, but Danforth had to work with inferior models; it's one of many reasons "Jack the Giant Killer" didn't get into the animation pantheon. Check out "7th Voyage of Sinbad's" finale (it's the film that "Jack" producer Edward Small imitated) to see how a dragon and giant fight!
+Victor M What's funny is that the animator who worked on this film, Jim Danforth, who was Ray's protege, went on to do "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" (1970), and most stop-motion enthusiasts will agree that Danforth's work in said film far surpassed his mentor's.
+RovertLladnar Nosmoht Ummmm... I don't know too many people would say that. Danforth worked with greater technology (Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth) but that is probably the only film of his where the stop-motion looked really good. His other films all looked... meh... Also remember Harryhausen was a one-man army where he would animate the special effects, take on storyboards, do concept art, help with the choreography, sometimes help write the script, and do much more work.
Inspired by all the Ray Harryhausen Dynamation movies. Jack the Giant Killer is a lesser known film from the era, and although the effects are not as good as a Haryhausen production, it's still quite entertaining. And the Princess's evil from in the mirror is dead sexy too.
When I was a child, I grew up listening to my father tell his fascination with the final scene of the film The Incredible Shringking Man (1957), who he watched in the cinema theater. He described the fantastic Milky Way images. Years later, I recorded the movie on TV and showed it to him, who was disappointed to discover that the film was in black and white. He remembered in colors! Only then did I realize the impact of those scenes for a boy, born in the countryside, in the interior of Brazil, whose school books contained simple drawings and who certainly had never seen such realistic photographs (and even more so in a cinemascope!). My aunt later told me that until 1961 world maps and earth globes were not blue, they were earthy, usually brown or gray. Only after Gagarin's famous statement did the world maps turn blue. This gives a dimension to our look at animation technology. My father remembered in color from a black and white movie!
Not sure how or why this is suddenly in my "suggested" list. But I remember seeing this movie as a kid on TV. I loved these Claymation movies back then. Best part of this clip, IMHO, is when the chimpanzee starts tossing down some small rocks onto the Giant's head, that suddenly become boulders when we see them hitting the Giant.
God I love these old classics! So much better special effects and feeling it makes up for the bad scripting. I mean, the humans just stay in the cave like noobs when the Two-headed giant is occupied... And i just love the monkey! This is made with love. Hollywood movies after 2010 is not.
Thanks you RUclips, we can now watch the best parts of these old movies without having to sit through all the boring pacing, terrible acting and wretched writing in those films.
Young people today think these special effects are primitive compared to today's high technology effects. When I was a kid I thought this was high tech compared to the 30s and 40s.
The best photo of the character is the snake/octopus. The monster is very weak. The couple is anemic and lacking salt. The bandits are ridiculous and cowardly. The dog is a scoundrel. And what does Xita do there? She left Tarzan to do some odd jobs. haha 😂😂😂
To those of you who are complaining about the movie effects, you do realize that you're complaining about the effects that wasn't even from your era. 30 years from now, people are gonna be laughing about the Avengers CGI.
It is really interesting to see that, from films like this, the same basic principles of stop motion animation can be used to create movies like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings.
You could make a much better version now using an iphone 😀
2:16 I love how determined the Sea Monster looks here, like he's saying "shit just got lit, son!"
Me too. I'm glad he one the fight against the Evil Two Headed Giant. Take that Pendragon. Good always triumphs over Evil.
😐
And that bitch slap at the end of the fight was perfect. Lol
I lost it when the kraken showed up. What a hilarious smile.
It bitch slapped that double headed dude into next week.the sound effects are hilarious but I have a real soft spot for these old types of fantasy movies.
Of course it showed up with a smile it knew it was going to get a free meal
😂😂😂😂
It was too adorable for a vicious character haha..
All we need is Jim Ross' commentary.
"Is that, is that an anchor? OH MY GOD, NO! He's smashing that cave up! There's no hope now. Wait, what is that? IT'S THE KRAKEN!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!"

you gotta realize this is old movie

Look at 7th Voyage for instance, that stop motion aged gracefully. That said I love this too.
Maybe, too cartoony...
That's one realistic stop-motion chimp. I defy anyone to beat that with CGI.
***** And so's the two-headed guy and the dog, I suppose? Get real.
lol

: )
🤣
Don't tempt them lol
Golden age of stop motion, i loved that movie when i was a kid, back in the early 80's!
When I was a kid there wasn’t any flick any better than this kind. High drama and adventure!
It's not everyday you go strolling on the beach and end up encountering a wrestling match between a giant with two heads and a kraken/dinosaur hybrid.
ArmandtheWise I see that everyday you should really get out more
I should and you need to tell where I can find that stuff. lol

A combination of Clash of the Titans, Tarzan, Lassie, and Davy and Goliath. How could you go wrong?
Not hiring Harryhausen to do your effects.
Cybopath Wait Harryhausen didn't do this film? Damn, the stop motion seems so similar!

The models look way way cheaper than Harryhausens children I find...^^

Yes. It's very well made for its time actually.
This is no Ray Harryhausen quality though.
Even better with this :)
These things even happened in the original 1933 King Kong. It happens.

How in the hell is a kid supposed to sleep right after seeing something like this?
This movie was a reaction to the Ray Harryhausen classic "The Seventh Voyage of Sindbad" from 1957. So, basically a fan fiction movie.
So,no "special effects by Ray Harryhausen?"
The new Killer Instinct really drew inspiration from this for the classic Eyedol look (and the OG game of course)
