I love how today's kids get so easily terrified with fake mutilation. I remember 6yo me watching Ultraman decapitating monsters and not really being scared because even then I was aware it was all just rubber parts of a costume.
These kids just stared blankly and calmly as they just watched a monster get sliced and diced by a knife monster.... These children are the true definition of fear itself...
When I was a kid I don’t remember seeing the butchering part. They didn’t show that part at all on 80s Saturday morning TV. Gayos just flew away after his own reflected laser removed one leg.
I feel that having them silently watching the monster battle and the subsequent mutilation of Gyaos makes this introduction of Guiron more dramatic. When they're commenting on what's going on the scene seem like an Itchy and Scratchy fight. But when they're just watching quietly you get more of a feeling that they're both scared and in awe of the alien kaiju they're seeing.
This was the first Gamera movie I saw. Remember getting excited when my dad brought home 3 of the VHS tapes. Watched Gamera vs Guiron first, and was literally in shock & awe as to how violent it was compared to the Godzilla movies
This was my first Gamera, too, although I already had “Gammera the Invincible” on tape. (Don’t recall watching that until after “Guiron,” but I digress.) What really weirded me out at the time was Shunsuke Kikuchi’s eerie music as the kids wandered around the seemingly-unoccupied alien base. Those scenes really got under my skin in a way Godzilla and Toho movies didn’t, largely because of the music. Oh to be 8 again.
I remember the first time I saw this movie where it was different where after Guiron cut off Gyaos' leg with it's own beam attack the Gyaos did retreat and Guiron returned to his underground lair.
Imagine driving along a remote desert highway by yourself one day and then across the desert plain comes this 200 foot long giant lizard with an oversized knife blade for a head running toward the road. 😂
Was wondering why I remember Gyaos getting sub zeroed when I was a kid but now my daughter is into these showa era movies. She has the version of without were gyaos flies away before the decapitation
We made very accurate and to scale hand and suspension puppets of Godzillaverse monsters, in High School. The grading of the project sucked but NOT the years of home fun for dozens of kids and adults. Guiron....and THIS specific video clip...were favorites. The dismembering we created and other hellish events, were never film canon, we went beyond. I remember the edited version. You have allowed my childhood to be relived and validated. Subscribing !
The fact that the image editing techniques used for this movie were kept to a minimum seems like a message to all modern movie makers. “We achieved this with minimal editing, such as erasing wires.”
"literal murder with flesh and blood" Yeah, the "murder" of a ridiculous man-in-suit monster whose blood is purple. It's not remotely realistic, nor is it really framed in a sadistic or disgusting way (although your mileage may vary regarding the latter).
The super-low quality English dub that you can find everywhere on budget DVD's is the one where the decapitation scene is cut out. On Millcreek's Gamera box set the scene as well as the Japanese audio is left intact.
This was the movie dad showed me as a kid in the 90s that taughtnme to respect Guiron. He's been my favorite Kaiju outside of the Godzilla franchise which I was more into than Gamera. Actually I was blown away that there were so many kaiju franchises as a 90s kid in Japan after I saw this. I had thought it was just Godzilla.
Anyone find it funny that the Space Gyaos lost it's right leg in an almost identical way that the Gyaos on Earth did only with the Earth born Gyaos he lost the toes on his right leg while the Space Gyaos lost his whole right leg beneath the knee.
That was invented for "Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe." It almost certainly doesn't apply to the Showa-era version of the character seen in "Gamera vs Gaos" and "Gamera vs. Guiron," although admittedly there's nothing in either of those films that would preclude that.
I love how the kids are unphased by the sheer brutality and horrifying sight this would actually be
Which just goes to show how unnecessary the edited version was. Even in universe they could tell it was only cartoon violence.
