You got some really great deals there, and a nice choice in locos. Great to see that S Atlantic: folks lament the old manufacturing standards and lack of detail, but for quality and sheer running enjoyment they provide an awful lot of bang for the buck.
Among many, I've got 100 year old Lionel, Ives, and American flyer, and they all run brilliantly, reliably, and can surprise with how well they do run, even down to a very low switching speed. and as a bonus look really good on display when not in use.

Those toy trains you have were made at a time when American pride and craftsmanship really meant something. unlike today with 'made in china' that falls apart within a month.

@@michaelquinones-lx6ks aren't they just. Tbh, it just seems to be that if it's new or modern; one should be prepared to expect issues, and be prepared that fixing an issue can only be through return to manufacturer.
I don't really think the workers would've had much pride in the job back then (how much pride would some guy with a soldering iron have soldering the same joint day in day out, which is something that Henry Ford found out where even higher pay doesn't offset inhumane working conditions and treated as automatons and if you complained got beaten up or worse) it's just the fact that they built them as quality pieces because that's all they knew how to do.
The engineers designed the models as best they could and with constant improvements because that was what their job was.
It was a time when the market price was dictated by how much the toy train cost to manufacture, assemble, paint and engineer. Now, of course, the market price dictates how much is to be spent on manufacturing, assembly, painting and engineering.
One of the most telling is the launch of the Hornby Dublo 4mt 3 rail tank loco: the initial production run was 100,000 units, a prodigious amount by any standards. 4 (four) were returned under warranty.
The geographic issues isn't that relevant, it just so happens that as most items are made in China that's what crops up the most, however items produced in whatever domestic area often have as bad, if not worse, quality issues as anything made in China.
Its really down to that build it down to a price mentality as opposed to build it, see how much that costs, then we'll price it accordingly.

Those are beautiful toy trains you have. they were lucky to escape the scrap drives of 1942 because, many of those antique toy trains up to that point were sacrificed for the war effort.

I just got a 4-4-2, they are rare. Although the hottest to get are 4-8-8-4 big boys, got 2 runners, 2 plastic models. And neatest is a 4-6-6-4 challeneger in grey

I’m surprised that you consider Bachmann a quality train company. My impression is that other brands are far superior. I’ll be interested in what you experience with yours. 👍🏼

Every brand seems to have really unpredictable variances. I've basically given up trying to generalize: my BLI proving to be more unreliable than my Bachmann.
I've reverted to vintage reliable excellent running '50's ho and brass, tinplate, and Japanese prototype N, basically having giving up on modern production H0. detailing yes: but really just too patchy on quality.

I've actually had pretty good luck with the modern bachmann locos (so far!). Their older models, not so much! Lol.
