The Mill Run And Western Maryland Railway
Добавлен 6 апр 2020
The Mill Run and Western Maryland is a HO scale model train layout based on my own personal narrow gauge railway, The Mill Run & Western, mixed with the Western Maryland Railway. My channel focuses around the fun of basic model railroading on a DC powered layout. Vintage locomotives, logging, coal mines, tunnels, yard operations, locomotives of the month and DIY videos are just a little bit of what I hope to make this channel out to be. So hop on, check it out!
First Op Session on my Newly Designed HO Scale Layout, Hop on!
I recently redesigned my layout. After a couple of months of rigorous testing, it's finally ready for it's first op session! The locomotive in operation is a Bachamnn RS-3 number 2735. It has had a sound decoder installed by the previous owner (and for those of you who will notice... no, you are right, it does not sound like an Alco at all) and we will be operating it will all the bells and whistles. Please be sure to check out my channel, the Mill Run & Western Maryland, give this video a Like and subscribe!

What are the different power sources of model trains? Why do conductors wear striped hats?
I have a question. I have a issue with my track I'm trying to use one track and have two loops and the power keeps killing itself every time I try to do it.
Definitely a good engine there and able to pull a good load. Probably could pull a few more cars possibly. Were all the cars weighed ? Good to see the Mill Run and Western Maryland up and running after your remodeling. God’s blessings on you.
So wait I dont understand. How are you not causing a short with your crossovers? I'm new to this so I do apologize but are the crossovers individually powered? If they are, are they all isolated? I looked up Bachman #4s and theres not much on the website where you can buy them. Do I have to get the track pieces that isolate the crossovers themselves or is it just plug and play?
Yes my crossovers are individually powered. The rail is isolated with a nylon rail joiner to keep it from shorting. I did a follow up video on thus that might help with your question as well. ruclips.net/video/5iWP_2bO5Kg/видео.htmlsi=nKrd--u7WOGdPor2

Wow, that is a lot of coal cars, that's cool!
I gle birdshot in the voids between hopper bays beneath the car for additional weight using white glue. A Sarpie permanent marker can color the dry glue black in seconds and dry in minutes. The result is a car that even when empty tracks well.
Great video. Nice choice of background music and narration. Besides, can’t beat a Southern anything doing the work! FYI, Southern ran the RS long hood forward and the figures in the cab are positioned correctly.
@@chattanoogasouthernrr And I almost ran it long hood forward ... lol. Thanks for the info!
Great video! Can’t wait to see more of the update layout!
Very nice operating session you got running there bud it's nice to have your layout extended out so you have a little more operation to do on your layout. It looks great and awesome I wish I could come and visit you someday in the future and run trains
Good to hear from you! Thanks for checking out my new video. It's been a long while since I've done anything RUclips wise. I looked into going to the Mill creek central this summer, but it ended up being further than I expected. But maybe someday I'll get up there!
Did you have to make your own female to female connector to connect to each retailer? I can't find one online. I just saw that you answered it in another comment. I will make my own.
That looks really good, I like it. And I’m not a fall person. But who says that a layout has to be just one season. Know of another fellow train hobbyist that has a winter scene that he leaves up year round on a section of his layout.Really enjoy seeing your videos and seeing what you enjoying. God’s blessings on you. 👍🚂👍
There are better isolating joiners on the market with thinner isolating pins on them, e.g. Fleischmann art. 6433 or Roco art. 42611 for scale H0. Isolating tracks might be interesting for digitally operated layouts as well. If a programming track is part of the layout it has to be fully isolated from the "normal" DCC-circuit. If there are large numbers of digitized rolling stock on the tracks it could save expensive digital power to turn their rest tracks off.
Fantastic Looping Elecromnibus!!
I have the same model! Very good runner!
@@CDMTrains Yes! Awesome running engines!
Well done, really like your layout 👍

looks great! You should do a video just touring the progress so far on the new layout
@@yoitschris9563 thank you for the suggestion! I might just do that
I'm new to HO but I'm getting very deterred about continuing on because I have an older set and have no money and definitely no interest to have to convert everything to work with newer rolling stock.
The biggest advice I can give to working with older track and locomotives is clean, clean, clean. I know when I started out I have to try several techniques before my trains started performing properly. You can do it!
What code rail jointers do you use for the n scale? thx
Code 80 I believe
@@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 thank you. would I then connect another power pack with speed controller to a Terminal Rerailer?
Did you check the coupler height with the height gauge by Kadee?

Cool!!
Use mod podge on top of the resin once it dries to get the ripples you want buddy. You can use the podge also to make rapids.
If I have multiple red wire feeders coming from different sides of my layout track(to ensure I have enough power throughout my layout) how can I connect all these to the bachmann ez command controller knowing that there is only one aux jack input
On my layout, I started at the power pack with a single lead to the first power imput on my track, then connected the next lead to the other side and continued to the next power imput track, and so on. That way it was one line and less wires. Does that help?
[thank, you for youre great helpful video]
Hey there. Thank so much for the great video. It looks really good. I can tell you've put a lot of work into it. So far this is the only video I've watched of yours, so if you already knew everything I put down below please excuse my ignorance. Just wanted to give another way due to what you said towards the end. Although I did subscribe so I can come back and watch some more another time. But if you didn't know it and you have questions feel free to ask. I'll help all I can. Hope all is well. I use casting epoxy. It is a 2 part but it's simple to use and layer as well as create the ripples you wanted. You can use acrylic paint to tint it (to get the depth look you want) or doing clear like you did over your painting. To get the ripples tint a tiny bit bit white in a seperate little cup. Put a small line down and either use a stir stick to blend out the edges or a straw to blow it around. Add to your eyes desire( unless you have a problem with your too-much-gene, like me, lol) I first started out with "Alumlite" at WalMart. In the craft paint section in the craft area. They have a small starter kit that includes parts A & B as well as cups, stir sticks and gloves. That brand has done me well and my fall back if I run out and have to wait on a shipment. Tips for smoother mixing and to help with bubbles is 30 mins before using it, pop the bottles in some warm water to heat it up.
That's great! Looks very authentic!
Thank you very much!
This is really cool!!!!
I have a question about the table and the size and length of the plywood?
The table was 2'x4' and the plywood was 33" wide and 18" long (per section). Hope this helps!
Yes it does thank you.@themillrunandwesternmaryland11
Neat way to get your train up and running. I would have to do that with my train layout because I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I have a 6' folding table. So you guys gave me an idea.
I have more than 300 pieces of freight cars. I bought 10 sets of those 100 per box but once in a while you will run into trucks that are too wide to keep them in place. I bought the boxes when Walthers had them on sale then my Dealer put them back fro me, when I needed more I went to my Dealer & pick them up. 10 boxes of 33 4 boxes of 36.Some of my newer stock already had wheels & couplers. I had a number of Talgo type trucks so I had to change those too.
Have you noticed any shrinkage as the 50/50 glue mixture dries?
Couple of thoughts on this: how thick is the scenery that you're gluing? You may be doing too much at once. And, what type of surface? I have done scenery on both plywood and foam board and never had a problem BUT I also paint the surface material first to prevent it from soaking up the IP and glue. Perhaps that has something to do with it as well. Sorry if I'm not much help here.
@@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 Thanks for the quick response. Painting the surface before adding any texture or landscaping sounds like a good idea that should eliminate or minimize any shrinkage or warping. I'll try it out on a scrap/rest piece of foam. My little project will be made entirely of foam and is intended to swim as it the harbor from the island of Wangerooge on the north coast of Germany. It has a narrow gauge railway, a docking area for ferries, a rescue boat and a ramp for cargo vessels. The overall length is around 3,6 meters and 1 meter wide, although all of the sections will all be 600cm long for transport. The sections all connect with magnets and aligning pins made of polystyrene, also all sections will be covered be polystyrene around the perimeter. The railway will not be powered, rather the train itself will be carrying a Lipo and a micro RC receiver. Just like all of the vehicles and vessels that operate on it. I convert 1/87 scale cars and trucks to RC and recently started working on a landing craft ferry. Last year I got the chance to operate my vessel for the first time with another "micromodeller" in the model boat pond in Cuxhaven. He mentioned that now that I have a vessel, now I need a harbor. Just last month we met again and he was very encouraging for my idea of the harbor of Wangerooge. Search for the video Minihaven 2022, from mikromodell.eu I am trying not to rush the project but I am certainly being confronted with materials and methods that I have never used before.
@@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 It may have taken awhile, but I finally got a chance to try out my module on the water for the first time. Everything turned out as planned/hoped for and now i can continue on with the landscaping and scenery followed by weathering. Just finished a video with some rc rail and crane operations during the first test.
TY Chris, precisely what I wanted review on! Ur water turned out great. BTW- ur voice sounds exactly like Woody Harrelson 🙂
I'm just starting this project with my 55 ton hopper fleet. It consists of Athern, LifeLike, Stewart and a few Atlas cars. The Atlas needs no improvement. I put Atlas trucks under one of the Athern cars and it not only runs like an Atlas, it looks like it. Next I'll just replace the wheels on another & compare.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Well done ! 👍
Very cool! Thank you! Now just thinking out loud. Which stock requires which radius.
Most locomotives will have a minimum radius listed that they proform best on. Steam locomotives are affected the most by this (2-8-0 wheel arrangement and up). Some may have "blind drivers" and will do better than others. Rolling stock typically will run on any radius, but keep in mind the longer the car the more it will hang over the tight radius curves... if that makes sense?
@@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 Awesome! Thanks for the response as well. I won't get any passenger or autoracks then. I'm at 28.74" (730 mm) radius all around. Two 270 degree circles with a 90 degree crossing (bow tie layout).
How do you connect one terminal rerailer to another? They both need female cables and Bachman doesn’t make a female-female extension cable that I can find. Thanks.
I had one that came with a turnout set (I think). I've never seen another one like it. This might be something you'll have to make. I am however still looking and will post If I ever find one.
You can buy two power leads, and screw the two round eyelets for transfor connection to a piece of wood. Or as I did, buy some female spade connectors, and make my own double ended power connection. I also made my own polarity reverser using a latching double throw relay, reed switch on a insulated piece of track, and a small neo magnet glued under the loco. Just use you imagination. Can get everything you need at a lot cheaper than what bachmann market them for. At my dcc turnouts, I added bi colour 3mm LEDs, red/green to show if a track was open or closed. Polarity shifting from the frog, and a small rectifier, resister to suit. Dcc is Not AC power. It's phase swapping DC. A simple pwm signal.
@@russcole5685 wow! Thanks for the help. For some reason my EZ track re-railer terminal was actually DE-railing my locomotive so I got rid of it anyway and just soldered wires to the track.
Best early locomotive was an Athearn Blue Box "Super" F7. After having some Bachmans and Tycos, that locomotive was a revelation. Secondly: an ancient Penn Line K4 is a more recent get. Love it. Lastly, a Hobbytown/Cary Loco Works Alco S2; talk about a brute!
How do you stop ground cover from cracking when dried?
I'm sorry I'm not sure. Using this process, I've never encountered that problem ...yet. I do everything at once usually: glue, ground cover, i.p., and 50/50 water glue so it will all dry at the same rate. Not sure if that helps!
Neat. Looks fun.
good explanation, always used #5's yrs back, but just got back into hobby after 30yrs. Always used styrene to adjust height, (the hard way), but this much simpler, kadee's are great.
[thank, you for youre great video]👍
Your discussion regarding the extra power supply was valuable for me.
How do you wire a frog juicer to an EZ track wye?
If you are using the gray road bed ez track with the metal frog, they usually have a terminal and wire on the bottom that you can plug in to power the frog.
You are supposed to use some form of screw to hold the lid on so it’s easy to change couplers. Hope this helps you in the future. 😊
What could one possibly need a double decapod for…?
Just having some fun on the layout.
people need to know how to do this. thanks for the video
