I like how the devs realized that they leaked Banana Guard by accident and said "Fuck it, lets just release the trailer now since everyone already knows about it."
There's always the chance that the leak was intentional.
Considering it's an odd pick, it gave us time to settle the idea in. It might have a worse reception if they announce it out of the blue.
They have been talking about bannanas for a like a week before the "leak".

Unless I’m mistaken, the Nick Brawl 2 devs did a similar thing. All 4 DLC Fighters were leaked, and about a day or two later, they also said “fuck it” and posted an image showing all four of them.
Quite a shame, in retrospect. I’m pretty sure all of their newcomers were leaked.

People need to understand that almost every fighting game has at least 1 goofy character that no one expects. Personally, I might main this silly yellow guy.

I'd say the same of Villager and Isabelle in Smash, but crossover-platform-fighters usually lean more toward 'Rule of Cool' than actual canon, usually for the best too.

People were mad they had added YET ANOTHER Fire Emblem sword fighter instead of going for a fan request or a third party. Here it's the same, people are mad because they added a fucking joke character nobody cares about, and did so before adding other characters that are far more deserving. The only difference is that Byleth had a very unique moveset that reconciled a lot of people, meanwhile this banana guy just looks to be wanking his spear all around and that's about it, not very exciting to be honest.

The game is supposed to be having a massive relaunch and Banana Guard is one of only 3 characters they picked for the launch

It's a meme character, she'll arrive at some point, They can't release the best ones all at once, otherwise the hype will end, they will probably alternate between popular characters and "mid" characters.

Joker was a fun start... but this? I could understand if the banana had a unique, fun fighting style but the moves look super generic as well.

To be fair, we didn't really "get" anyone yet since the game is not out yet... these are just announcements. It's possible those characters are ready and available, but they want to wait until later to announce it for hype reasons or something
(Please keep in mind, though, that I personally doubt these certain characters will be playable at launch day, so my hopes are low for that).

It feels like its too early to do Joke characters like this When we are missing iconic characters who really should be in the game already. There are other AT Characters that should be in first before we resort to a gag. Ice king marceline PB Should be in before this

I personally wouldn't call it "too early". Nick All-Star Brawl added a similar joke character, Hugh Neutron, as DLC/around their 25th character, which is the same as here. Not to mention Smash Bros had Jigglypuff & Pichu for the 64 and Melee rosters.

@@W-LM27Hugh was extremely wanted, because he was the most wanted character when the game was announced, due to memes. Jigglypuff and Pichu you’re right though with those games not having reveal trailers or anything like that for trailers it wasn’t as big of a deal.

You know I get we got to have popular characters in this game but I really hope we get more legacy characters in the future. I DESPERATELY WANT POPEYE IN THIS GAME AS DLC IF ANYTHING!!!
