The first episode was devastating, 99.99% of the UN space fleet destroyed. Even more devastating is when the lone single ship returns home, they saw a planet bomb and can't even defend nor deflect its trajectory making earth a heap of mess. Don't worry, there's a pay back.

the real kicker is that this battle was the last one between UNCF ships and not the Yamato just think how many ships were lost throughout the course of the Entire war, not just this battle

If you mean the cannons at the front of the cruisers and the Kirishima they are shock cannons like the Yamato's, although much weaker and take a lot of time to recharge. I would like to see them being used as well. It would make the battle more interesting as they would be capable of damaging the Gamilas ships. In the battle of Mars where Earth repelled the first Gamilas wave it was thanks to these weapons, so yes, it is a shame they didn't show them in action.
Oh damn, I thought that was just some kind if intake port. Well, since you seem to know a bit about this setting, can you explain the glowing ports facing forward on every Gamillan ship? Are they brake-engines, or just vents for power plant radiation?
The First War is essentially WWI naval combat in space. Battleships lined up in battle lines slugging it out with main caliber guns while smaller ships tried to scout out where the battleships are and not to get killed in the crossfire. No fighters, few torpedos, just lots and lots of guns. To make it even funnier, they are actually using coincidence range finders to control guns at 0:40.

Mamoru Kodai was a beast. You can tell from this battle that he was a cut above the rest. If the UNCN was better equipped for the war, I think that Mamoru would have been a force to be reckoned with.

Was a beast? In the Manga Mamoru Kodai is later revealed to be alive operating under the alias "Captain Harlock", the same Captain Harlock from the anime/manga. He was supposed to be revealed at the end of the show as Harlock when they arrive at Iscandar, but due to rights issues with the original rights holder they had to change it.
When I first started watching this series it wasn’t clear who was who, so I was routing for the villains through this whole conflict, impressed by how they crushed their opponents under their metaphorical boot.

I believe that since this is in space, there might be light lag if you use an active rangefinder so they use coincidence because it's passive and you don't have to send a laser out to get a return.

@@wayutakemura919 Yeah it only looks like its close, these ships are rather large, and the distances they were firing at, much much larger. There's still radar, but I think Yamato was the first to get that. But, as the guy above said, it's a ww2 aesthetic & feel, so maybe they were going for proven early war tech.
I've always wondered why the humans didn't invest heavily in missiles. The lasers don't seem to do anything more than scratch the enemies' armor, but the missiles were pretty effective.
The missiles used at the end were next-generation prototypes that would be utilized in the Yamato. The older missiles can be seen in action when the Kirishima fires a full spread which go wide and hit nothing. There's likely some kind of jamming going on from the Gamilon side preventing older targeting systems from getting a proper lock.

@@Bleachsoul13 I can understand jamming but what about the explosions the explosives turned into big balls that stayed still that doesn’t happen in real life. Maybe thats what ports on the Gamilon ships do they contain the explosion. That would explain why they change colour in battles.

@@Bleachsoul13 Not that good of an analogy. If a modern missile cruiser (except maybe the Kirov) got hit with WWI artillery it would definitely hurt a lot. What a missile cruiser can do is pound the opponent before it even gets into range. Here, the Gamilans could stand toe-to-toe, taking it as well as dishing it out.

Keep in mind that the Mursame and Kongo-class ships in the Cosmo Navy pack a Spinal Shock Cannon which is powerful enough to actually destroy Gamilas ships in a single shot, but the charge time precluded its use in this fight. Sort of like how a modern missile Cruiser could lock and fire its missiles at a WW1 Battleship before said Battleship could range the missile Cruiser. All the firepower in the world doesn't do you any good if you can't use it.
@@Bleachsoul13 - To my knowledge, those Shock Cannons were a post war addition not a pre-war function. They didn't have the power nor the technology to employ them until after Yamato got back from her journy. Of course, I haven't 2202 yet, so I may be wrong. Because every ship AFTER Kirishima was decommissioned was said to be a modified design with new refits added in. UNCN Kirishima was stated that she was only ship to survive the war of the original Pre-War Navy and the only ship to survive the war other than Yamato. And she doesn't have the equipment that later ships of her class have. Lately, I have been noticing a trend in the Japanese Entertainment Media, specifically Anime and Manga, to have multiple models of something that is identical, yet they have such radical differences as to be completely different altogether. A good one is in Macross Delta. Delta Platoon operates a Fighter that is said to be a custom of the standard Fighter used by the rest of Xaos, the PMC they belong too. Yet, if you look at the two Fighters in all three models and set them next to each other, they're radically different in design, capabilities, and general appearance. They share the exact same designation, but the name was changed because Delta was flying some 'Custom' models. Really stupid really. So while the 2199 Kongo-class and the 2202 Kongo-class long superficially the same, that would be like comparing the South Dakota-class, North Carolina-class, and Iowa-class Fast Battleships as the same ships, despite that the Iowas were both larger and faster and used Mark 7 50 caliber 16in guns as opposed to Mark 6 45 caliber 16 inch guns of the preceding two classes. Some might point out the Standard-Type Dreadnoughts the US Navy fielded, but those also had some differences to one another, they were just kept to a standard form. Interesting thing I've heard about some of the American Cosmo Navy Cruisers, though. They apparently, appear like the Kongo-class, yet are classified as Cruisers. Not Battleships, as they follow the US Navy's naming convention, which is that Cruisers are named after Famous Battles. Missile Guided Cruisers anyways.
With the exception to Kantai Collection, why must every Ship named Shimakaze in anime be sunk? Sunk in - Azur Lame, Strike Witches, Space Battleship Yamato and 2199, Highschool Fleet (off screen), Mobil Suit Gundam 0083 (nuked), and AGAIN in SBY Resurrection!
The original series had lots of overtones of the Second World War, particulary in how outnumbered and outgunned the Japanese fleet was at the end. Even when they hit American Ships it sometimes seemed they weren't doing any damage while every hit on there ships was catastrophic.
Perhaps later in the war, but at the start, they knew they were hitting the Allied Fleets hard. But, what actually happened, was that the Japanese overestimated their kills. Then they were inflated outrageously. For example, at the Battle of Savo Island, a severe defeat for the Allied Fleets, the Japanese didn't claim 4x Cruisers sunk. They claimed nearly 10x Cruisers sunk. Some of that, might be because of identification, such as the Bagley-class Destroyer USS Jarvis DD-393. She was mistaken for a larger Australian Cruiser and the Japanese went all out to sink her. She was already damaged, having taken a torpedo meant for the USS Vincennes prior to the Battle of Savo Island, and had been withdrawing to Australia for repairs, despite orders to go to another location. The confusion was the result she didn't have a working radio and no one was keep an eye on her when she left unexpectedly. Eventually, the Japanese sent 31 planes from Rabaul. Damaged, down at the bow, and limping along, it was a forgone conclusion. There were no survivors of her remaining 244 men. If I recall right, the Japanese would ultimately claim to have essentially sunk the entire Allied Pacific Fleet at least twice over, maybe thrice. So you can imagine, two years later, it seems like there is an avalanche of ships coming at them and there's nothing that can be done to stop them. Ironically, the Japanese sat on their laurels after the first battles. Having bested the US and Australians in combat or been fought to a draw and the odd lost, the Japanese were convinced they were better. They had the better torpedoes, tactics, and capabilities, especially at night. But the US Navy alone began sweeping changes, taking the full brunt of the Japanese attacks more often than not. These included major changes such as diesel electric back ups, more emergency lighting, that damn torpedo issue finally fixed, new tactics, and even major retrofitting of existing ships and those still on the slipways to fix shortcomings before the ships got into combat. Then, the US Navy started to learn as they got the Peace Time Routines knocked out of them and learned to expect a real fight every time they went into combat.

They were churning out ships, planes and munitions left right and center to fuel not one but three war fronts! Not only that but they were constantly improving. The North Carolina class of ships were the first battleships the US built since the end of WWI and the signing of their own naval treaty, and even those got eclipsed about a year later when the Iowa-class was introduced.
@@LtCWest - Actually, the US Navy got to work on new Battleships as early as 1937. The plan was originally for 4x North Carolina-class Battleships. Then it was judged that more Battleships were going to be needed, but the North Carolina-class still had Treaty considerations. As such, the US Navy began work on what would be the South Dakota-class Fast Battleships. This is why there were only two North Carolinas. Originally there were to be four. But the US Navy shifted to the South Dakota-class instead. They were able to do so, because Congress authorized increase support for the US Navy. In fact, there were three Pre-War Naval Bills passed by Congress from 1937-1940. The last bill greatly enhanced the US Navy, authorizing not only what would be the Iowa-class Fast Battleships and Montana-class Dreadnought Battleships, but almost 20 Carriers, 12,000 Aircraft of all types, and numerous Cruisers, Destroyers, Submarines, and other Naval vessels from Seagoing Combatants to Port Support Ships. Also, 1939 and 1940 happened and the US Army, alarmed, began immediate work to remedy its shortcomings. The T1 Combat Car was quickly phased out for the M2 Medium Tank and M2 Light Tank. The M2 Medium was following Pre-Battle of France Doctrines in Tank Warfare. Which, after June 1940, became obvious it was not going to work. So the US Army stopped the M2 Medium's production in favor of the M3 Lee. The M2 Light Tank was originally developed as a Cannon Armed Male Tank and a Two Machine Gun Armed Female Tank, nicknamed the Mae West for the two turrets that held the two .30 caliber Machine Guns. Immediately, the Mae West Tanks were converted to Cannon Armed Tanks with 37mm Guns, but still had a lot of short comings. As such, the US Army began to fast track the M3 Stuart into service. The M5 Stuart would be a great improvement over the M3 version, which was the M3 as it should have been. The original M3s were very close in design and appearance to the M2 Mediums, so much so, unless you know what to look for you can't tell the difference, which is also how they operated as both were essentially the same Tank with differences. Like Twins that are not Identical. The M4 Sherman was already being designed, developed, and tested even before the first M3 Lees were being assigned. All of that Tank work, from 1939-1942. As you can guess, the US Industrial Complex was already getting kicked awake. Roosevelt had spent 1940 getting ready and then he spent 1941 seeing everything come together. But nothing was complete when Pearl Harbor was bombed. In fact, the US Army was still fine tuning their doctrines when the bombs fell. As such, they fought WW2 with a doctrine and arrangements they simply hadn't had time to finish. And still the US Military answered the call. As did US Industry, but the first show of US Industries power was not until 1943, when the USS Essex finally arrived and even then, the CV-10 USS Yorktown wasn't available for another four months, with the next ship not available until the Summer. More than half of the Essex-class was either never finished or didn't arrive until the start of 1945. The US had the Industry and had it started to churn things out in 1939, then the full might of it would have been felt in 1942. As it was, it was late to the party. US Strategy, Tactics, Leadership, Daring, Improvisation, Intelligence, and Japanese Blunders, Habits, and Rivalries, fought the Pacific War to its conclusion in 1942. It was a case that Japan didn't accept the war was lost in 1942 until 1945.
in Yamato 2202 sequel to 2199...Kongou Class Space BBs are Warp Capable and equiped with Wave motions Engines same goes for the Murasame Class Heavy Cruisers and Yukikaze Class Torpedo Destroyers...if those ships where in 2199 the gamilans will have a very hard time destroying them because those Updated and Refitted Earth ships can Blast a Gatlantean Cruiser , battleship and Carrier to pieces
I always thought after watching the reimagined series version of this battle, as shown above, is if the one human Cosmonavy missile destroyer was able to do that much disruption in the Gamelon fleet to cover the flag ship's retreat, after so many other human ships were destroyed so easily, then the humans had idiotic tactics from the start. They should have used far more of the same methods as the single missile destroyer did.
In lore materials, they stated that the Yukikaze (the Destroyer in question) had new prototype torpedoes and missiles. I'm assuming that they must have higher yields and possibly better guidance systems, because in this same clip we see the Kirishima fire a whole salvo of missiles which go wide and miss the enemy ships. So while the Cosmo Navy missiles might work in theory, Gamilon ECM would have rendered them useless. But yes they should have gone evasive from the start.
@@godlucifer8428 The reliance on optical ranging despite the confirmed existence of Radar and LADAR would imply that some form of ECM is being used. There are tons of contextual clues.
@@godlucifer8428 Well a major one is that while radar and LADAR both function for acquiring enemy vessels, disabling those systems doesn't impede a ship's ability to use its weapons. In the Rainbow Nebula, the Yamato had all its sensor arrays shot off, and yet the main guns and AA turrets could still aim and fire at enemy ships and targets. Hell, even when their sensor arrays are operational, the consoles are shown using the optical rangefinders to aim at targets. There would be little reason for this if radar and LADAR could get a solid lock on the position and speed of the target. There are other scenes too where Gamilon ships miss the Yamato completely despite it traveling in a straight line at a constant speed. Also, ECM is a thing in the modern day. I don't see why it wouldn't be a thing in 2199.
1:57 on this scene, the cannons look like they're rifled, what is it for? do they still use conventional kinetic weaponry alongside the compression laser cannons? another question, why do UNCF ships look like they have no point defense weaponry at all? i know they have point defense guns but still, no visual hardpoints, is there any lore reasons or just the production reasons?
The rifling is probably just an aesthetic choice. I don't believe it has a purpose. As for the complete lack of point defense guns, it's never addressed.
For the rifling, heat dissipation. But them using kinetic weapons would have been better. The Kongo did have point defense, but it looked like machine guns, not auto or rotary cannons.
Wouldn't be much of a desperate war for survival if humanity had mobile suits or the tech from that universe, the early Universal Century stuff alone would easily decimate Gamilan naval forces within minutes of entering range, easily wreaking havoc onto neatly arranged ship formations electronically impaired by their presence alone. I'd wager they would even be able to capture any one of the warships for reverse engineering too, as opposed to relying solely on limited, mysterious Iscandarian tech.

wrong sci fi there my adversary, this anime oged before star wars by a few years, in fact star wars was believed to be inspired by SBY, whilst star trek came after star wars, meaning it could have been inspired by star wars. From the original anime, near as I can add it all up, the reason the Gamilas ships were so difficult for the Cosmo Navy to damage was due to the 'rare elemental alloy', as Sanada refers to it in the English dub, they are made from. An alloy found on a moon of Saturn, which we find a damaged Yamato attempting to extract in the episode where we find the elder Kodai's ship crashed. This also helps explain Yamato's resistance to damage. While the same alloy is used to build and maintain Yamato, it is not in as purified a form as the Gamilas use. Armed with this knowledge, the engineers who design and maintain Yamato's weapon systems are able to fine tune the ships weapons to make them far more effective against the Gamilas. As for why the Cosmo Navy was not so strong in the first place, the Planet Bombs began well before Earth was aware of the existence of the Gamilas, so the ships they are employing were made with purely Human made alloys and weaponry. While the energy weapons do not seem to be effective, the projectile weapons, with sufficient momentum behind them from their firing ship, are able to penetrate the armor of the Gamilas ships. The only question this leaves, is why the Cosmo Navy's fighters are more effective at first against the Gamilas 'war planes' as they were named in Star Blazers. Perhaps this is due to a lighter version of the alloy used by the Gamilas so their fighters used less fuel and could carry more weaponry. Or, again, with sufficient velocity, perhaps the Cosmos Tigers were able to penetrate the enemy armor. Either way...still a fun story.

They carried over the action of the UN/Earth flagship, getting sliced open, with a few crew blown into space, and the ship begins a slow roll from the damage.
I keep having to remind myself that we're almost certainly seeing the abridged version of a battle that likely took most of a day, just so I don't feel so bad for all the ships & crews looking like they got annihilated with one shot. Like... they at least got to stand up to some hits we didn't see and get a few good shots off before they went down, right? ....right?
The actual episode might have a timeskip in the middle, but most of those ships were indeed dying to single hits. Only two enemy ships died that day, one kill by Yukikaze with torpedo fire and the second was a friendly fire hit.
haha yeah I guess so, I was just half-jokingly hoping that the presentation might not be 100% diagetic because of running time and aesthetic considerations, and that the fleet might have "really" gone down a little harder in the same way that they're "really" not that close to each other and the characters are "really" 3D flesh & blood people like us who we're just seeing an animator's drawings of. cuz otherwise maaan that suuuuucks, all those huge, proud, beautiful ships and brave crews as helpless as doughboys at the Somme. Ya hate to see it. On the other hand tho, it sure sets up the Gamillans as strong and thus the Yamato as even stronger. Been reading the comments and, wow, you really seem to know your stuff here. So I've a question if you can answer it. What makes the Earth torpedoes so effective against the Gamilas ships, since it seems to be the only really effective weapons they have? (Yes, I read about those positron weapons they have, but as mentioned, in a dymanic battle they're useless). Are they nuclear or is Gamilas armour just not good against explosives?
The torpedoes used by the Yukikaze were explained in lore material as being prototype torpedoes like the ones the Yamato carries, and as such are more effective against Gamilon forces. The missiles the Kirishima fired are old type and apparently didn't do much. And Gamilon ships seem to explode when caught in the blast radius of explosives, but it's unclear on why that is the case. Plus, there are unexplained exceptions to this.

Also it's most likely because Gamilas ship was build to defend against Energy Weapon type and don't or have very little protection against Kinetic Weapon, even a Yamato Type-3 kinetic shell fired from a WW2 ship barrel can destroy Gamilas ship, the problem with torpedo might be just because Gamilas have advanced jamming system which is showed by the fact that only Kirishima with a prototype torp was able to hit them while the other just miss.
The odd thing is that the Humans started the war with Garmilas during the first encounter between the UNCF and a Garmilan expeditionary force. But looking at battles like this it seems odd that Garmilas even considered them a treat. This wasn't a battle but a slaughter.
Except that's how it would actually go in most cases. Especially with high power energy weapons. One hit to the reactor or something else important like the capacitors holding all the energy for the weapons and kaboom.
Man this battle reminds me about the 1 year war Zeon vs Federation conflict so much hell the color schemes are almost the same the green alien ships look so similar to Zeon ships in terms of paint job and ship layout of the guns and the human ships also look like something the Federation would field to the point that you could of titled it Federation vs Zeon battle scene from Gundam and I wouldn't of questioned anything.
I noticed that. If you watch the series you'll see the gamillons are fine with friendly fire. Especially if the ship about to get blown up is full of 2nd class gamillons.
Early advantage to the shields. Once those were used up it was too late the Gamilons had too much of an advantage in numbers and easily mopped up whoever couldn't run away fast enough.
I have to concur with @TheBleachDoctor here. The Yamato was actually the first human ship (or probably the first ship in possibly centuries since Iscandar had abandoned using Wave Motion Tech in an offensive capacity) to feature Wave Motion Shields.
The small destroyers and the yukikaze going in close to the Garmillian fleet reminds me of the Rocinante for some reason i dont know why but it does to me. All it needs to be like the roci is some PDC's all over it, no windows except the airlock, rotating living quarters for gravity or decks stacked perpendicular to the engine, a railgun that fires positron slugs and more torpedoes/missiles, a sh%t load of them. Build alot of them and it might give the UN a chance with em positron slugs that will pass through their shields like the shells of the yamato do but better. My only problem with what I suggested is the reactor. How powerful enough is it to power the railgun I suggested? This aint the expanse.
Well, I'm no physicist, but from what I've read based on computer simulations and technological extrapolation, it's been pretty well established that big warships with bow anchors and artillery turrets and captains wearing naval regalia all duking it out with broadside salvos while a jaunty march plays IS in fact the most exciting, awesome, and romantic form of space combat. Like yeah OK that's not how spaceships maneuver but for a 21st century audience this gives a feel of what a space fleet battle could *feel* like

If you mean the cannons at the front of the cruisers and the Kirishima they are shock cannons like the Yamato's, although much weaker and take a lot of time to recharge. I would like to see them being used as well. It would make the battle more interesting as they would be capable of damaging the Gamilas ships. In the battle of Mars where Earth repelled the first Gamilas wave it was thanks to these weapons, so yes, it is a shame they didn't show them in action.

Well, since you seem to know a bit about this setting, can you explain the glowing ports facing forward on every Gamillan ship? Are they brake-engines, or just vents for power plant radiation?
The First War is essentially WWI naval combat in space. Battleships lined up in battle lines slugging it out with main caliber guns while smaller ships tried to scout out where the battleships are and not to get killed in the crossfire. No fighters, few torpedos, just lots and lots of guns. To make it even funnier, they are actually using coincidence range finders to control guns at 0:40.
well to be fair that might be the only tech that works to find those ships at the time (though i doubt it)

Mamoru Kodai was a beast. You can tell from this battle that he was a cut above the rest. If the UNCN was better equipped for the war, I think that Mamoru would have been a force to be reckoned with.

Was a beast? In the Manga Mamoru Kodai is later revealed to be alive operating under the alias "Captain Harlock", the same Captain Harlock from the anime/manga. He was supposed to be revealed at the end of the show as Harlock when they arrive at Iscandar, but due to rights issues with the original rights holder they had to change it.
In my opinion, he was the only competent UNCF destroyer captain shown on screen.
When I first started watching this series it wasn’t clear who was who, so I was routing for the villains through this whole conflict, impressed by how they crushed their opponents under their metaphorical boot.

if it aint broken dont fix it. but i get what you're saying, even civilians use laser rangefinders nowadays. personally i think the rangefinder adds to the WW2 aesthetic and feel these ships are going for.
I believe that since this is in space, there might be light lag if you use an active rangefinder so they use coincidence because it's passive and you don't have to send a laser out to get a return.
@@wayutakemura919 light lag would be a problem at the extreme ranges spacecraft would engage each other at definitely. that might be one thing that draws ships in closer is so their energy weapons become more effective.

There's still radar, but I think Yamato was the first to get that.

When War Thunder matchmaking screws up and pits a team of jets against early WW2 planes.
I've always wondered why the humans didn't invest heavily in missiles. The lasers don't seem to do anything more than scratch the enemies' armor, but the missiles were pretty effective.
The missiles used at the end were next-generation prototypes that would be utilized in the Yamato. The older missiles can be seen in action when the Kirishima fires a full spread which go wide and hit nothing. There's likely some kind of jamming going on from the Gamilon side preventing older targeting systems from getting a proper lock.

we got something to say at least. Garmillans crews were pretty incompetent through the whole anime they always relied on the technological advantage so when the yamato showed up it showed how incompetent they were. They friendly fire, a lot.

Not that good of an analogy. If a modern missile cruiser (except maybe the Kirov) got hit with WWI artillery it would definitely hurt a lot. What a missile cruiser can do is pound the opponent before it even gets into range. Here, the Gamilans could stand toe-to-toe, taking it as well as dishing it out.

Keep in mind that the Mursame and Kongo-class ships in the Cosmo Navy pack a Spinal Shock Cannon which is powerful enough to actually destroy Gamilas ships in a single shot, but the charge time precluded its use in this fight. Sort of like how a modern missile Cruiser could lock and fire its missiles at a WW1 Battleship before said Battleship could range the missile Cruiser. All the firepower in the world doesn't do you any good if you can't use it.
@@Bleachsoul13 - To my knowledge, those Shock Cannons were a post war addition not a pre-war function. They didn't have the power nor the technology to employ them until after Yamato got back from her journy. Of course, I haven't 2202 yet, so I may be wrong.
Because every ship AFTER Kirishima was decommissioned was said to be a modified design with new refits added in. UNCN Kirishima was stated that she was only ship to survive the war of the original Pre-War Navy and the only ship to survive the war other than Yamato.
And she doesn't have the equipment that later ships of her class have.
Lately, I have been noticing a trend in the Japanese Entertainment Media, specifically Anime and Manga, to have multiple models of something that is identical, yet they have such radical differences as to be completely different altogether.
A good one is in Macross Delta. Delta Platoon operates a Fighter that is said to be a custom of the standard Fighter used by the rest of Xaos, the PMC they belong too. Yet, if you look at the two Fighters in all three models and set them next to each other, they're radically different in design, capabilities, and general appearance.
They share the exact same designation, but the name was changed because Delta was flying some 'Custom' models.
Really stupid really.
So while the 2199 Kongo-class and the 2202 Kongo-class long superficially the same, that would be like comparing the South Dakota-class, North Carolina-class, and Iowa-class Fast Battleships as the same ships, despite that the Iowas were both larger and faster and used Mark 7 50 caliber 16in guns as opposed to Mark 6 45 caliber 16 inch guns of the preceding two classes.
Some might point out the Standard-Type Dreadnoughts the US Navy fielded, but those also had some differences to one another, they were just kept to a standard form.
Interesting thing I've heard about some of the American Cosmo Navy Cruisers, though. They apparently, appear like the Kongo-class, yet are classified as Cruisers. Not Battleships, as they follow the US Navy's naming convention, which is that Cruisers are named after Famous Battles. Missile Guided Cruisers anyways.
With the exception to Kantai Collection, why must every Ship named Shimakaze in anime be sunk?

The original series had lots of overtones of the Second World War, particulary in how outnumbered and outgunned the Japanese fleet was at the end. Even when they hit American Ships it sometimes seemed they weren't doing any damage while every hit on there ships was catastrophic.

Perhaps later in the war, but at the start, they knew they were hitting the Allied Fleets hard.
But, what actually happened, was that the Japanese overestimated their kills. Then they were inflated outrageously. For example, at the Battle of Savo Island, a severe defeat for the Allied Fleets, the Japanese didn't claim 4x Cruisers sunk. They claimed nearly 10x Cruisers sunk.
Some of that, might be because of identification, such as the Bagley-class Destroyer USS Jarvis DD-393. She was mistaken for a larger Australian Cruiser and the Japanese went all out to sink her. She was already damaged, having taken a torpedo meant for the USS Vincennes prior to the Battle of Savo Island, and had been withdrawing to Australia for repairs, despite orders to go to another location.
The confusion was the result she didn't have a working radio and no one was keep an eye on her when she left unexpectedly.
Eventually, the Japanese sent 31 planes from Rabaul. Damaged, down at the bow, and limping along, it was a forgone conclusion. There were no survivors of her remaining 244 men.
If I recall right, the Japanese would ultimately claim to have essentially sunk the entire Allied Pacific Fleet at least twice over, maybe thrice.
So you can imagine, two years later, it seems like there is an avalanche of ships coming at them and there's nothing that can be done to stop them.
Ironically, the Japanese sat on their laurels after the first battles. Having bested the US and Australians in combat or been fought to a draw and the odd lost, the Japanese were convinced they were better. They had the better torpedoes, tactics, and capabilities, especially at night.
But the US Navy alone began sweeping changes, taking the full brunt of the Japanese attacks more often than not. These included major changes such as diesel electric back ups, more emergency lighting, that damn torpedo issue finally fixed, new tactics, and even major retrofitting of existing ships and those still on the slipways to fix shortcomings before the ships got into combat.
Then, the US Navy started to learn as they got the Peace Time Routines knocked out of them and learned to expect a real fight every time they went into combat.

They were churning out ships, planes and munitions left right and center to fuel not one but three war fronts! Not only that but they were constantly improving. The North Carolina class of ships were the first battleships the US built since the end of WWI and the signing of their own naval treaty, and even those got eclipsed about a year later when the Iowa-class was introduced.
@@LtCWest - Actually, the US Navy got to work on new Battleships as early as 1937. The plan was originally for 4x North Carolina-class Battleships. Then it was judged that more Battleships were going to be needed, but the North Carolina-class still had Treaty considerations.
As such, the US Navy began work on what would be the South Dakota-class Fast Battleships.
This is why there were only two North Carolinas. Originally there were to be four. But the US Navy shifted to the South Dakota-class instead.
They were able to do so, because Congress authorized increase support for the US Navy.
In fact, there were three Pre-War Naval Bills passed by Congress from 1937-1940.
The last bill greatly enhanced the US Navy, authorizing not only what would be the Iowa-class Fast Battleships and Montana-class Dreadnought Battleships, but almost 20 Carriers, 12,000 Aircraft of all types, and numerous Cruisers, Destroyers, Submarines, and other Naval vessels from Seagoing Combatants to Port Support Ships.
Also, 1939 and 1940 happened and the US Army, alarmed, began immediate work to remedy its shortcomings.
The T1 Combat Car was quickly phased out for the M2 Medium Tank and M2 Light Tank.
The M2 Medium was following Pre-Battle of France Doctrines in Tank Warfare. Which, after June 1940, became obvious it was not going to work. So the US Army stopped the M2 Medium's production in favor of the M3 Lee.
The M2 Light Tank was originally developed as a Cannon Armed Male Tank and a Two Machine Gun Armed Female Tank, nicknamed the Mae West for the two turrets that held the two .30 caliber Machine Guns.
Immediately, the Mae West Tanks were converted to Cannon Armed Tanks with 37mm Guns, but still had a lot of short comings.
As such, the US Army began to fast track the M3 Stuart into service. The M5 Stuart would be a great improvement over the M3 version, which was the M3 as it should have been.
The original M3s were very close in design and appearance to the M2 Mediums, so much so, unless you know what to look for you can't tell the difference, which is also how they operated as both were essentially the same Tank with differences.
Like Twins that are not Identical.
The M4 Sherman was already being designed, developed, and tested even before the first M3 Lees were being assigned.
All of that Tank work, from 1939-1942.
As you can guess, the US Industrial Complex was already getting kicked awake.
Roosevelt had spent 1940 getting ready and then he spent 1941 seeing everything come together.
But nothing was complete when Pearl Harbor was bombed.
In fact, the US Army was still fine tuning their doctrines when the bombs fell. As such, they fought WW2 with a doctrine and arrangements they simply hadn't had time to finish.
And still the US Military answered the call.
As did US Industry, but the first show of US Industries power was not until 1943, when the USS Essex finally arrived and even then, the CV-10 USS Yorktown wasn't available for another four months, with the next ship not available until the Summer.
More than half of the Essex-class was either never finished or didn't arrive until the start of 1945.
The US had the Industry and had it started to churn things out in 1939, then the full might of it would have been felt in 1942.
As it was, it was late to the party.
US Strategy, Tactics, Leadership, Daring, Improvisation, Intelligence, and Japanese Blunders, Habits, and Rivalries, fought the Pacific War to its conclusion in 1942.
It was a case that Japan didn't accept the war was lost in 1942 until 1945.
For being found mostly intact later on it sure blew up good.

in Yamato 2202 sequel to 2199...Kongou Class Space BBs are Warp Capable and equiped with Wave motions Engines same goes for the Murasame Class Heavy Cruisers and Yukikaze Class Torpedo Destroyers...if those ships where in 2199 the gamilans will have a very hard time destroying them because those Updated and Refitted Earth ships can Blast a Gatlantean Cruiser , battleship and Carrier to pieces

Even tho, it's confirmed that Gatlantis ships are (Calakhum not included) much less and effectively armored.
I always thought after watching the reimagined series version of this battle, as shown above, is if the one human Cosmonavy missile destroyer was able to do that much disruption in the Gamelon fleet to cover the flag ship's retreat, after so many other human ships were destroyed so easily, then the humans had idiotic tactics from the start. They should have used far more of the same methods as the single missile destroyer did.
In lore materials, they stated that the Yukikaze (the Destroyer in question) had new prototype torpedoes and missiles. I'm assuming that they must have higher yields and possibly better guidance systems, because in this same clip we see the Kirishima fire a whole salvo of missiles which go wide and miss the enemy ships. So while the Cosmo Navy missiles might work in theory, Gamilon ECM would have rendered them useless.
But yes they should have gone evasive from the start.

The reliance on optical ranging despite the confirmed existence of Radar and LADAR would imply that some form of ECM is being used. There are tons of contextual clues.

Well a major one is that while radar and LADAR both function for acquiring enemy vessels, disabling those systems doesn't impede a ship's ability to use its weapons. In the Rainbow Nebula, the Yamato had all its sensor arrays shot off, and yet the main guns and AA turrets could still aim and fire at enemy ships and targets.
Hell, even when their sensor arrays are operational, the consoles are shown using the optical rangefinders to aim at targets.
There would be little reason for this if radar and LADAR could get a solid lock on the position and speed of the target.
There are other scenes too where Gamilon ships miss the Yamato completely despite it traveling in a straight line at a constant speed.
Also, ECM is a thing in the modern day. I don't see why it wouldn't be a thing in 2199.

The rifling is probably just an aesthetic choice. I don't believe it has a purpose.
As for the complete lack of point defense guns, it's never addressed.
For the rifling, heat dissipation. But them using kinetic weapons would have been better.

Wouldn't be much of a desperate war for survival if humanity had mobile suits or the tech from that universe, the early Universal Century stuff alone would easily decimate Gamilan naval forces within minutes of entering range, easily wreaking havoc onto neatly arranged ship formations electronically impaired by their presence alone. I'd wager they would even be able to capture any one of the warships for reverse engineering too, as opposed to relying solely on limited, mysterious Iscandarian tech.

From the original anime, near as I can add it all up, the reason the Gamilas ships were so difficult for the Cosmo Navy to damage was due to the 'rare elemental alloy', as Sanada refers to it in the English dub, they are made from. An alloy found on a moon of Saturn, which we find a damaged Yamato attempting to extract in the episode where we find the elder Kodai's ship crashed. This also helps explain Yamato's resistance to damage. While the same alloy is used to build and maintain Yamato, it is not in as purified a form as the Gamilas use. Armed with this knowledge, the engineers who design and maintain Yamato's weapon systems are able to fine tune the ships weapons to make them far more effective against the Gamilas.
As for why the Cosmo Navy was not so strong in the first place, the Planet Bombs began well before Earth was aware of the existence of the Gamilas, so the ships they are employing were made with purely Human made alloys and weaponry. While the energy weapons do not seem to be effective, the projectile weapons, with sufficient momentum behind them from their firing ship, are able to penetrate the armor of the Gamilas ships.
The only question this leaves, is why the Cosmo Navy's fighters are more effective at first against the Gamilas 'war planes' as they were named in Star Blazers. Perhaps this is due to a lighter version of the alloy used by the Gamilas so their fighters used less fuel and could carry more weaponry. Or, again, with sufficient velocity, perhaps the Cosmos Tigers were able to penetrate the enemy armor. Either way...still a fun story.
2199 had a different explanation.
IIRC 2199's lore explanation is that the Gamilas use a special laminate coating on their armor based on their planet bomb laser satellites
The reason for the Yamato being more effective than other Earth warships is that it they incorporated Iscandarian technology in its construction.
That, and the Yamato's turrets used positron cannons, which previously were spinal weapons on EDF ships with a similar charging procedure to the WMG.

I keep having to remind myself that we're almost certainly seeing the abridged version of a battle that likely took most of a day, just so I don't feel so bad for all the ships & crews looking like they got annihilated with one shot.
Like... they at least got to stand up to some hits we didn't see and get a few good shots off before they went down, right?

The actual episode might have a timeskip in the middle, but most of those ships were indeed dying to single hits. Only two enemy ships died that day, one kill by Yukikaze with torpedo fire and the second was a friendly fire hit.
haha yeah I guess so, I was just half-jokingly hoping that the presentation might not be 100% diagetic because of running time and aesthetic considerations, and that the fleet might have "really" gone down a little harder in the same way that they're "really" not that close to each other and the characters are "really" 3D flesh & blood people like us who we're just seeing an animator's drawings of.

Been reading the comments and, wow, you really seem to know your stuff here. So I've a question if you can answer it. What makes the Earth torpedoes so effective against the Gamilas ships, since it seems to be the only really effective weapons they have? (Yes, I read about those positron weapons they have, but as mentioned, in a dymanic battle they're useless). Are they nuclear or is Gamilas armour just not good against explosives?
The torpedoes used by the Yukikaze were explained in lore material as being prototype torpedoes like the ones the Yamato carries, and as such are more effective against Gamilon forces. The missiles the Kirishima fired are old type and apparently didn't do much.
And Gamilon ships seem to explode when caught in the blast radius of explosives, but it's unclear on why that is the case. Plus, there are unexplained exceptions to this.

Also it's most likely because Gamilas ship was build to defend against Energy Weapon type and don't or have very little protection against Kinetic Weapon, even a Yamato Type-3 kinetic shell fired from a WW2 ship barrel can destroy Gamilas ship, the problem with torpedo might be just because Gamilas have advanced jamming system which is showed by the fact that only Kirishima with a prototype torp was able to hit them while the other just miss.

The odd thing is that the Humans started the war with Garmilas during the first encounter between the UNCF and a Garmilan expeditionary force.
But looking at battles like this it seems odd that Garmilas even considered them a treat.

This anime is one of the best out there, its just that the ships getting completely blown up in one hit breaks the immersion.
Except that's how it would actually go in most cases. Especially with high power energy weapons. One hit to the reactor or something else important like the capacitors holding all the energy for the weapons and kaboom.

Man this battle reminds me about the 1 year war Zeon vs Federation conflict so much hell the color schemes are almost the same the green alien ships look so similar to Zeon ships in terms of paint job and ship layout of the guns and the human ships also look like something the Federation would field to the point that you could of titled it Federation vs Zeon battle scene from Gundam and I wouldn't of questioned anything.

Early advantage to the shields. Once those were used up it was too late the Gamilons had too much of an advantage in numbers and easily mopped up whoever couldn't run away fast enough.
At this point in 2199, no ship had shields.
I have to concur with @TheBleachDoctor here. The Yamato was actually the first human ship (or probably the first ship in possibly centuries since Iscandar had abandoned using Wave Motion Tech in an offensive capacity) to feature Wave Motion Shields.
The small destroyers and the yukikaze going in close to the Garmillian fleet reminds me of the Rocinante for some reason i dont know why but it does to me. All it needs to be like the roci is some PDC's all over it, no windows except the airlock, rotating living quarters for gravity or decks stacked perpendicular to the engine, a railgun that fires positron slugs and more torpedoes/missiles, a sh%t load of them. Build alot of them and it might give the UN a chance with em positron slugs that will pass through their shields like the shells of the yamato do but better. My only problem with what I suggested is the reactor. How powerful enough is it to power the railgun I suggested? This aint the expanse.
Enough to casually make a straight trip and back between Earth and Saturn without refuelling.

Well, I'm no physicist, but from what I've read based on computer simulations and technological extrapolation, it's been pretty well established that big warships with bow anchors and artillery turrets and captains wearing naval regalia all duking it out with broadside salvos while a jaunty march plays IS in fact the most exciting, awesome, and romantic form of space combat.
Like yeah OK that's not how spaceships maneuver but for a 21st century audience this gives a feel of what a space fleet battle could *feel* like
