And also tanks in the series are much older Type-74. By 2010s (which the anime is set around), Those tanks were already in the process of being scrapped, Oh, don't forget the absolute clusterfuck bureaucracy and the relationship between the government and SDF in the anime + fear of outside interference (China, Russia, and the USA).

There is something I don't like of fantasy vs. modern military is that usually the magic is overpowered and has magic shields that can stand depleted uranium shots capable of piercing 600mm of steel, magical shots that can wreck tanks or hit helicopters/planes on movement and the best of all, the military high command is useless and unable to learn from what happens And on the other hand we might get a good story, this is kind of in between: the magic is underpowered, but that's because they hadn't any strong competitor and they got behind in evolution, but they are slowly catching up
You've probably seen the best if not the most fun one(or atleast I have not found nothing more fun), there's also another manga with the exact same plot, but different take, plans and negotiations, there's also some real casualties, but the art looks like your art in some generic newspaper in comic section.
the us army back in the early 90s had a towed m61a1 they used on ground targets. i got to see it in action....you don't want to be on the receiving end.
Just imagine being one of the medieval soldiers... Hundreds of huge metal bears and dragons spewing fire left, right and center. Thousands of men in no (heavy) metal armor, just shooting beams of lightning from hundreds of meters away. Absolutely unstoppable.
One of the coolest aspects of the show was that they specifically avoided bringing over their latest generation equipment, instead they used stuff they had left over from the mid to late cold war era. It was deemed more than sufficient and did not impair JSDF readiness, but also did cause few issues for the expeditionary force down the line.

Man I love this anime. I know it’s not a particularly great anime, but I love how it subverts all tropes and expectations. 90% of the time in fiction the normal human soldiers are just cannon fodder who get annihilated by magic/superpowers/etc, but in GATE it shows how 21st century Earth military is just overwhelmingly powerful compared to fantasy combatants.
Just the Astra Militarum would be enough, maybe even PDFs, however if you want thr poster boys I would say just 10 space marines plus a base built around the gate.

Gate is always a great one for me, because it made me feel two things - 1) Testosterone. The emotion that is testosterone. 2) It's absolutely tragic. You have this medieval fantasy land full of brave fighters that thing they understand war and violence, only to be forced to realise they do not understand what violence even is, or how bloody war can be. 10/10 AMV, good job.

That commander honestly seemed as competent as he could have been. He figured out that their only possible means of acclompishing anything was to engage in melee combat and not be at a distance where they could be bombed without any risk to the enemy.
If you notice, Roman shields are slightly thicker than a modern ballistic shield. This is why their shields were utterly useless against bullets. If only they had a tough shield like that of Chinese Imperial military, they would be able to turn the tide against the JSDF.

If you really like this there are is another one i recommend, but its still in manga. the entire Japan was teleported into different planet, a planet like this with magic and dragons. The planet is bigger than earth so there multiple civilization from meideval to ww1 armies. Its all about war too. Japan soldiers have to start making friends on other nations, war to hostiles and defend their nation from air to seas. There are even demon king.

I assume the infection starts at bases and the people that get infected first are military personnel and then it makes sense especially when the zombies can run and jump and the infection takes hours to kick in (infection taking secinds is on the extreme side as ni matter how many bullets you have you can't eliminate all the zombies before they get to you).

In most depictions, zombies are immune to bullets/shrapnel (body at least), because they apparently don't need internal organs. As such, they're much more dangerous than medieval foot soldiers.
What I love about this show is the fact they not just defended the gate from our side, neither they just sat on an outpost on the other side, they got a whole army to show the invaders who’s boss in their land, let hell loose and didn’t give a fuck about it. what i love most about this is there was no "oh shit, what is this, i didn't sign up for this" coming from the soldiers. they load up onto a transport, hop through the gate, disembark and start giving everything on the other side a case of acute lead poisoning, basically not even questioning how they're in a different dimension and all that. it's really a breath of fresh air.

Man I love this anime. I know it’s not a particularly great anime, but I love how it subverts all tropes and expectations. 90% of the time in fiction the normal human soldiers are just cannon fodder who get annihilated by magic/superpowers/etc, but in GATE it shows how 21st century Earth military is just overwhelmingly powerful compared to fantasy combatants.

That commander honestly seemed as competent as he could have been. He figured out that their only possible means of acclompishing anything was to engage in melee combat and not be at a distance where they could be bombed without any risk to the enemy.
From the time the shields cannot defend soldiers from enemy bullets,all have been lost.
If you notice, Roman shields are slightly thicker than a modern ballistic shield. This is why their shields were utterly useless against bullets.
If only they had a tough shield like that of Chinese Imperial military, they would be able to turn the tide against the JSDF.
