Is 2D Printing The New 3D Printing? Filament Painting With HueForge + MidJourney AI
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 11 июл 2023
- In this video I provide an overview of HueForge, a new software tool that converts images into 3D printable models using a technique called filament painting. I demonstrate the use of the program and illustrate how to use the Midjourney AI to generate the input images. I also show how to significantly reduce print time and increase print quality when printing this type of model.

Knocked my socks off!! Great find... and video. I thought your PRO tips were helpful guidance, and Slice Gap Closing Radius particularly insightful, since knowledge of that parameter is useful in other projects. Great job Taylor, TY.
Thanks a lot Don! You are very right on that. These settings will be useful for pretty much any flat sign type object you may be printing, and perhaps some others as well.
Very cool! I would like to see a tutorial on Portraits from actual photographs, as well as Silhouettes on solid black or white backgrounds?
Great research and advice!
Great video! Would love to see updates and future ideas/improvements/techniques etc
Thank you!
Finally an actual slicing tutorial instead of just another overview of what HueForge does. Well done. Can't wait to try out your tips. Truly a new era for art. AI will definitely kill off some art-forms, but it's also creating a whole new world on top of the ashes of the old one.
I've seen some videos on HueForge, but yours pushed me over the top. Well done. Pairing it with MidJourney was awesome. I couldn't wait any longer for the Mac version. I was able to get it running on an Intel macbook. If you have one before the new M1/M2 chips it will work in VMware Fusion with Windows 10 as the guest operating system. HueForge is probably going to make my build an ERCF for my Voron. I may even build a 350 Voron just for bigger prints. ERCF might be a good mod to build for your channel. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the positive feedback. Good to know about it working in a virtual machine. I have an ERCF in a box waiting to be built. I’ll have some content on it here eventually.
Really great idea and video!!!
Thank you!
Excellent ~ I'm hooked! New sub & liked - thank you!
very cool, would have been nice if original program had all the tweaks that you mention in your video.
could you possibly make suggestion using prusa slicer since I was unable to find many of your suggested changes on the prusa slicer 2.6.0
This is amazing
Once Mac support arrives I'm definitely getting 😊
Great video! I refuse to use the word forgephane though. lol. I much prefer filament painting. Well done and very thorough.
Lol 😂. Filament painting sounds more like a verb to me, but I suppose it can be a noun as well.
Thanks for watching and for the use of your awesome timelapse.
Hey Taylor, new to your channel and I appreciate what you do!
Quick but sad update on the HueForge polymaker coupons….
All four levels say "THERE IS NO LONGER A POLYMAKER COUPON FOR THIS LEVEL."
On a brighter note though, HF is now available for MacOS! 😊
Happy… 3D… Printing !
Got some while filament, tomorow i gonna try some litophane.
Thank you for this video! As I'm a QIDI X-Plus user, you sold me on getting a Bambu Lab X1-Carbon Combo 3D Printer just for this!
Thanks for watching! You’ll love the Bambu Lab… The integration with the AMS for multi-colour printing is a game changer.
I'm totally planning on buying the lifetime license and getting my free filament with it! Can't wait to do some epic things with my photos with this tech!
Awesome. Enjoy! It’s good fun and a great deal right now.
free filament? explain this please
@@CHACMOLT If you buy a software license you’ll get emailed a Polymaker filament coupon equivalent to your purchase price.
@@ygk3d 😯 so I can buy the 12 dollars suscripción
I've been having so much fun with Midjourney and HueForge ever since it came out! I hope this software gets some more traction with this video. I made a couple videos on it but I can't wait for more mainstream creators to cover this!! Excellent video as always
Thank you very much! These two (MidJourney and HueForge) really are the perfect match. Technology has come a long way 😊
how did you get the one picture seprate from the 4?
What nozzle size did you use tho?
Is there a limit to bigger nozzles like 0.5 and 0.6 for faster printing or just limited to 0.2?
I used a standard 0.4. The recommended layer height is 0.08, which is too small for larger nozzle sizes I believe.
Muy buen video la verdad funciona muy bien, donde se puede descargar el archivo para calibrar los materiales?
Gracias. El modelo está integrado en el software.
Ah de acuerdo 😅, muchas gracias
Is it possible to print 3d action figure (not flat printing) with hue forge in full color
No. HueForge is only for flat prints.
I know how to make some of those adjustments in Simplify3D, but there are others that aren't translating in my head. I'll have to go through this again when I'm at my home. I really need an X1C 🤘🤘
LOL he sold me on getting a X1C! :)
@@OZtwo I've had my P1S for maybe 2 weeks now and I love it!!! If you don't need to print CF based filaments, consider a P1S with an extra AMS and save a little money.
My only real issue with the P1S is the camera is complete garbage; 720p at 2-4 FPS 🙄I stream on Twitch, so I have to use a webcam. That's fine for PLA with the door open, but I do a lot of ASA and there's always a reflection with the door closed...
@@fatboy1271 Most likely I will stick with QIDI moving to a Max 3 BUT as well I want to get the AMS optional printer. Anyway, about the camera. What I have done for my printer now was created a custom camera mount for a P922 web camera. I am still a big USB fan so with this setup all I need to do is open up the Windows Camera application to see what is going on.
@@OZtwo Greatly appreciate that info! I'll look into the P922 and regardless, I'll need to figure out a routing solution for the cable. I want to install some light and figured I could design/print a riser for the top glass to sit on that houses the lights and also has an exit channel for the USB cable.
@@fatboy1271 If you are good with CAD I can give you the stl that you can modify. Why I would want to give it to you is that I took the camera apart and built a custom mount for the camera. It should work for any version of the Logitech pxxx versions. Also the camera doesn't need to be inside the printer but just in front of the window as I have done.
Nice! What are they being printed on?
I printed these on a Bambu Lab X1C.
i would try but I don’t have the bamboo Printer, I don’t have access to multi colour printer. Don’t The printers that print multi colour waste a lot of filament ?
A model like this has minimal waste, but you don’t need a multi-colour capable printer to make these. You can pause the printer and change the filament manually.
Is it the same with using an alpha on 3d modelling apps?
There has been some talk about achieving a similar with Blender but it would require advanced knowledge of the software.
It works in Paralells now.
can the HueForge software be used with any 3d Printer.?
Yes
@@ygk3d thanks for the reply back 👍🏻
although i can see how cool this is, still think dont add enough value, i would prefer a framed photo. Size limitation is a huge factor too
Sounds like a good excuse to buy a bigger printer 😅. I’m going to try one on my RatRig V-Core 3 500 soon. That’s bigger than I can print with my paper printer.
I don't want to harm the author of Hueforge in any way.
But it seems to me that such a result can be obtained using BLENDER and its tools for working with a polygonal grid.
Particularly displacement modifier.
Decompose the image by colors and grayscale.
Turning this into the intensity of the deviation of the vertices.
I will be glad to see how this approach works. I'm sure it will work!
So... do it! Wise guy.
Agreed, using a displacement modifier of the UV will get you half way there, you can then just slice up the model yourself and print it. This is a good starting point. ruclips.net/video/HL-oukeabhU/видео.html
@@pabobeer I know there is an amazing geometry node toolkit. With the help of such a tool, you can fully automate the process. Including plastic transparency simulation. perhaps we can control the density of the grid to optimize the resolution. Increase density where necessary. Which should have a positive effect on the subsequent slicing.
Holy crap. This is what if been thinking about for a while. Not smart enough to have figured it out 😂
😂
The technology is neat but could actually care less if a painting has a raised image versus a flat image. The essence of the flat image is still gotten across to all the viewers.
Personally I like the fact that these “pantings” are tactile. You won’t damage them by touching like you could an oil painting and even a blind person could “view” the artwork.
@@ygk3d Well sure but these are certainly not being promoted for the minority of blind people who need to touch paintings to see the image. These are primarily being promoted for just the purposes of new technology and getting people to literally and figuratively buy into it. Again, the essence of the flat image is still gotten across perfectly fine to the 8.4 billion people on this planet who are not blind, and so the aspect of the raised image is hyped up to be more than what it actually is for the mere purposes to gain people's attention to it
Try using 99% Infill. It may knock of a bunch of time.
Relief sculpting using a 3D printer.
SAAS licensing, yeah no thanks. I wouldn't push this product if they paid me. homebrewers will just cut this into the open source market someday, I can wait decades.
I mean it’s only $12 for one time only personal license. It’s not that bad at all really. $30 a month for a commercial license is also not that bad either.
😈 "Promo SM"
nice software, stupid licence plans
Had me till not Mac compatible
I’m a Mac guy as well. I only have a PC for my 3D scanner, but I was able to use it to try HueForge. Apparently they are working on a version for both Mac and Linux.
He's working on it, please keep following the journey and be patient!
I’ve been hearing about the last few weeks mostly on TikTok and it looks really cool no matter the price. I’m glad you did a video on it too.
Pretty sure he can't legally prevent you from selling items you print. Since they are plastic, they don't contain any Hue Forge IP. Even placing limitations on generated files might not hold up legally, as the equivalent of saying you can't share Word documents. They aren't his IP - they're the IP of the people who made the files. Just because his software generated something doesn't grant him the intellectual rights.
There has been a lot of discussion about this with many people raising the same concern. He has responded in a blog post on his website and slightly modified the license terms, but I don’t think the issue has been fully addressed.
No disrespect to the developer’s hustle, but I’ll just wait for this to be reimplemented free by the open source peeps. I can wait, don’t need it now.
This is no 2D image. You need to do better.
More like 2.5D. Flat but with thickness.
Such licensing schemes are going beyond exploitative. Charging for the privilege of doing what i want with the image i built with the software? Imagine if Photoshop charged for every use of every image it edited. It's beyond absurd. Why not charge PER VIEW? Why not charge for every time it's mentioned in conversation? The technique is not even that innovative!
There has been some debate about this. It does seem out of the ordinary as far as software licensing goes. I don’t think the creator is being intentionally explorative. It may just be a lack of knowledge on how these things usually work. The price is fair, in my opinion, but the terms of the license raise a few eyebrows. There is an interesting video about it by another RUclips creator. I’ll link it here: ruclips.net/video/e6uSrQRVOOk/видео.html.
@@ygk3d Just to be clear, this issue is with Midjourney not HueForge yes?
@@cyranodaburgerack8745 no. The other way around. MidJourney images you are free to do with what you want (as far as I know, don’t quote me on that). The HueForge license scheme is set up such that the higher tiers give you “selling rights” and even then you’re required to show a vendor certificate. This is causing a stink because it’s the equivalent of a paint brush company dictating the terms under which you can sell a work of art that you created using their brush.
@@ygk3d Yeah, that doesn't sound right at all. I'll probably just get the HueForge $12 "personal licence" for now anyway, but I hope this "selling rights" changes for higher tiers. Thanks for the reply!
I think Hue Forge sees themselves as being more of a CAD program than a paint program. There's definitely that type of commercial vs personal use license scheme with Fusion 360, OnShape, SolidWorks and many more CAD programs.
