Hello. I have been tracking the GM/PFJ/EVgo build. Their pace has been steady. This past week alone, they commissioned 3 stations & there are 27 more with canopies known to be under construction with 71 open. An additional 25 locations w/o canopies are also known to be under construction (52 in total known to be under construction). By my reckoning, they should have ~100 stations open by years end & their prices have come down to a network wide avg of 57.9 cents per kWh. Sorry for your bad experience with the spiders. Thank you for the video. I enjoyed watching as always.
I have 3 Level 2's at eMoto Powersports in Robbinsville, NC just 15 minutes from Tapoco Lodge or 25 mins from Fontana. Two J's and one 14-50. Feel free to use them if you stay in a hotel in town. It's within walking distance to everything in town.
I think it is interesting that Mercedes is doing such a big build-out of their own network, while also being part of IONNA, which is just starting to build out their network.
❤❤❤❤❤ Thanks guys really enjoy your network content Early enjoying this series love, Walter such a good boy. What was the breed again? No, you said that I must’ve missed it.???!!!😂😂❤❤❤ anytime I’m anywhere near Cherokee. I stopped at the museum. Always really enjoy it. I change out some of the areas regularly so it’s worth a trip back. I also pay my reparations at the casino, which is lovely. Usually state the Microtel down the road don’t know about the charging infrastructure there. Anyway stay safe. Have fun. I’ll see you next video.😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤-Brian G.
Thanks for the video Kyle. Watching your charging speeds makes me glad I have my Silverado EV. Also, Walter would love the rear seat of a Silverado or Sierra.
972 Kw * average of $.50 cost at DC is $486. Tacoma similar size lets say 18 MPG @ $3 a gallon average for 1,568 miles $261 To me it looks like its double the price to wait and charge Roadtrips seem like not worth it in EVs, but day to day would be cheaper than gas charging at home
Which trip this long have you taken? Yes, there are a few places where gas in $3 a gallon for regular, but there are other places where the price is over $4 per gallon. And do you always use regular gas with the Tacoma? Or plus, or super or premium? It's nice to cherry pick and use the absolute lowest number to make a point, but that's not the reality once you're out there. Especially on such a long trip.
Ur math is a little bit off because you are comparing EPA numbers in gas vehicle to real world numbers in EV as well as an estimated gallon price At 70mph+ like kyle normally drives in highway u will not get a truck that does more than 12 mpg My toyota 4runner on highway 5 in California at 75 gets 11mpg
True, but one less fossil fuel burner on the road, and charging at home is 1/5th the cost. Let's all help minimize pollution and climatic disasters everywhere
Government incentives for EVs and charging stations is not a big issue. Without government incentives the US would not have a highway network or a million other things that people take for granted. This hatred of the government doing anything is so weird.
Same. You need at least some government intervention in the economy. The free market by itself is not enough in certain scenarios. Even Adam Smith agreed that the government needs to be involved at times. It's the whole reason why we tax a lot of things with negative externalities and subsidized ones with positive ones. The US is such a big place and there are areas where it makes no economic sense right now to place things like DCFCs without some form of incentive to ease the burden. The system isn't perfect and it can be very inefficient, but is still needed at times
The government’s mandate is LITERALLY to serve as an incentivization engine, with rebates etc. being a tool to incentivize desired behavior (and punishment like incarceration used to disincentivize). The people who whine about that are simply those who are ignorant to the purpose of our government.
The lack of hatred for all things government comes from a place of privilege. As someone who has had to depend on government for things many take for granted, I quickly learned that government is disturbingly incompetent at everything they do. For a current example see FEMA. A healthy distrust of government involvement is a very good thing. There are times government incentives are needed but we should do all we can to keep them at a minimum. Government s has caused more human pain and suffering than anything, save for last resort only.
Charging issues are a deal breaker for most people, and for good reason. If Kyle is having big issues, how do you think the average person will do at these charging stations? Nobody would buy into that, nor should they. It's absolutely ridiculous.
Average person is not going to deal with charging issues. Unacceptable for Rivian and the charging networks to continue like this. Going on a trip with having to keep an eye on the “fuel gauge” and worrying about charging glitches is real work. Also telling drivers they have to deal with charging times by scheduling their meals is also unacceptable.
It's Kyle's job to emphasize problem areas with charging, because the industry listens and eventually does improve based on suggestions and comments such as Kyle's. See Rivian's OTA clearly naming him. I have been on 3 roadtrips with my R1T and R1S over the past 2 years, each between 2800 and 3500 miles long. Once I was misdirected in the night to a less travelled charger in SC, due to default safety settings, another 2 EA charging destinations turned out to be offline due to upgrading equipment, however with another CCS compatible charger nearby, so no issues. Do all route-planners work perfectly? NO. But the effect of non-pollutant vehicles to me are priceless. And helping charge hospitals and oxygen machines now during hurricane disasters is even better
Next time plan your charging stop to hit Effingham, IL. Four EA stations that seem always to work, but the big plus is the Firefly Grill, a GREAT place to eat....
Statesville, Statesville!! Was our stop to Myrtle, had an excellent clean Super 8 off I-77, just over 400 mile mark from here in NE Ohio. My neck is rebuilt w/ cadaver bones & titanium, so my limit for driving after doing nothing prior 2 days. Drove it in our Buick Ultra or a Devillie. EZPZ drive to Myrtle on day 2. Back north 1 exit for Bojangles dinner in Statesville. Super 8 in private hands now, signs gone. Alternative nearby was nasty last trip down. Trip back last time, stay in So. WV, Pipestem has 2 1772, 2 Tesla 2 chargers, free. Looked over those that year 2017 or 18? Used them in 2022 on trip to Mt Airy, in Leaf S Plus. Wytheville, VA EA next to Bojangles, winner, winner . . .
48:00 You were talking about the GM/Pilot/FlyingJ chargers not going so well. I can confirm because there was one planned at the Pilot near me and it was cancelled. They even broke ground on it, but then progress stopped and all the materials and equipment were taken away.
I just did a similar trip in my R1T Quad and didn't have any of the charging performance issues you were experiencing. I did have some issues with EA stations as expected.
Videos like this help keep people who haven’t bought a BEV yet from buying one … the amount of focus and time necessary to plan routes based on charging, not to mention worrying about whether charging stations will actually work or be available, plus whether your BEV might have problems charging (outside of the public-charging infrastructure), can be daunting for the masses to contemplate
Y'all were SO CLOSE to the house!!! I saw the white Tesla in my normal charging spot when I head up to Nashville. I am sitting here thinking.. if you were there and I didn't get a chance to say hi... sad sad days.
51:46 I'm not sure when this was filmed, but those rumors definitely appear to be untrue. We've seen a number of new sites go into planning/construction, and a number of additional sites opened. Walter (at theNetworkArchitectChannel) has been doing a great job following the build out, and we're now only one PFJ EVgo site away from being able to cross the country on I-40. Keep in mind that there's a lot of money to be made from an EVgo failure, and there's likely to be a severe EVGO short squeeze because over 25% of the stocks were held in short position at the time of the $1 B federal loan announcement, which induced a 200% bump in the stock price.
I learned a lot during this video, Don't buy a 100k+ truck with suboptimal charging infrastructure and poor thermal management, unless you like punishing yourself.
Like to see those covered charging stations with facilities. I'd like to suggest a visit to the new ROVE in CA, Santa Ana was scheduled to open on Oct 15th. Sure could use some Solar panel covered charging here in Marco Island/Naples FL
52:00 The ratio of blue bollards to charging dispensers is very unfavorable. It looks like someone who designs gas stations, and does not know anything about EV charging, designed that. I think you need a big canopy if you had a lot of gas pumps in that amount of space, and you needed to have fire suppression safety in the canopy. That whole site looks really bad though, makes Electrify America and VW look like they are executing well!
Next overnight stay check the battery pack temp. in the morning after unplugging. I hit a WV lodge 2 years ago with older 2 J-1772s and 2 Tesla dest. chargers. No one else staying used them. So I parked and set my timer to allow the battery to cool a few hours. Headed to Mt airy next morning, all good and cooled, finished around midnight. Battery heated a bit on the downgrade to N.C. on I-77 bringing in 24 miles added to the battery. Repeated charge on timer the next night also in So. WV. 2021 Nissan Leaf longest range model. S Plus
Weird that you are so down on your Rivian for road trips. We picked up ours in Atlanta and dove it down to St. Pete and it was effectively the same as if we had taken our Y or 3, like within a few minutes
That's less than 500mi, which is two short charges in each of these vehicles. Hardly enough distance to make much of a difference on paper, but the Rivian's charging times are disappointing. Sitting at a charger waiting for 135kWh pack to charge at barely 150kW is a bit maddening compared to a Tesla at 200kW+ and 75kWh. Tesla stops are 10min every 150 miles. Rivian stops are 30 minutes every 200 miles.
@@loganrossignol atlanta to st Pete is 479 miles, but even if your trip was 600+, it's still only two full battery charges in each vehicle. That isn't hardly enough for the charging differences to come out. It's just painful to sit at a charger for much longer than 15 minutes, which the Tesla is perfect for. The rivian is a bit grueling to take on a long trip for this reason. It's more of a feeling than facts on paper
@@austina4189 hm. I was thinking about our trip to cloudland canyon. That's usually over 600 miles one way. I looked at the data logged from our Y on the way to Atlanta (we were trading the Y in) and it was a bit over 500 miles. Anyways, like I said. This was literally a back to back comparison and it made no difference. You can extrapolate out to 1000 miles and we are still talking barely any actual difference. Both the Rivian and the Y were sub 30 minute charges except for when we charged deeper while getting food. Might help that we don't eat in the car.
Walter looks so vicious. I understand why people are afraid of him🤣🤣 I have a 100lb yellow lab, people are afraid of. He's big. I think that intimidates them. He's really a big teddy bear
I've been looking at getting a lightning for over a year now as I need to tow a side by side, but seeing your charging woes still to this day makes so hesitant, even though I don't go far the 1 or 2 times a year I did I don't want to deal with charging bullshit issues. and I'm in eastern Canada so we have practically no good stations either and lots of large areas with none at all.
Sad to hear about the issues between GM and Pilot/EV Go. They built a small Pilot One Nine truck stop near my house and it was supposed to have chargers, now nothing.
After watching many of your road trips it has become clear that the Tesla charging network is vastly superior in every way. I realize we are in the infancy of EVs and that everything will improve over time. For now, I am pleased I have a Tesla.
I've had precisely two issues with Tesla SC being derated or offline in 176k miles of tesla driving. One V4 was glitching and not allowing teslas to charge, and a V3 was completely full and not providing more than 30kW per car. Aside from that it's been 100% perfect. Meanwhile it's rare to find a CCS station with a clean plugshare history.
I had a similar issue happen when using my Lectron Vortex adapter. The heat would trigger the safety mechanism to kick in and therefore slowing the charge rate and eventually stopping all together. I stopped keeping the adapter in the trunk and keep it on driver side door where the AC hits it and keeps it cool until use in summer heat. Also, someone was using the charger before me so the handle was already a little warmer. Still love my Lectron adapter for them enabling Tesla access before Rivian can!
I just took a 1,500 round trip in my ID.4 S with a small battery. I tried three GM Energy / EV Gos with two at Flying J. I had 100% failure on the first and second try. I had to call in a 'reset' to charge on the third attempt. I charged five times on Chargepoint hardware with 100% success, even though they were slower. I charged 7 times on Electrify America, and had 100% success! I used a Tesla Majic Dock once with success. I do not understand why Tesla allows picking the station BEFORE plugging in. That would be nice to negotiate the app in the car if the weather is poor then run out and plug in.
1st NEVI site in Ohio a Flying J GM EVGO at 65 cents per, totally wrong for government funded to be priced like that. Did Fontana Villages get damage from Helene?? Our local Muffler Man closed up shop 2 or 3 years ago here and moved to Hammondsville, NC. He was happy to have us as one of his last cutomers after working on my Dad's Packards for years.
The charging speed issue is a real concern for me as I consider getting a Rivian. When or if they figure out the solution is it likely to be a hardware or software issue? A hardware issue would mean having to wait until it’s fixed before I buy. Software maybe be less concerned.
Yep Rivian better get that charging speed figure out or they might be out of the ev market, all that sitting around waiting on that truck to charge would drive me crazy.
When you were derating at the EA charger, down to 42 KW and other also the other times, have you tried turning off the AC? I have this same issue in my 2024 Silverado EV RST. At around 50% to 52% state of charge, my charging session of over 200 KW will drop down below 100 kW. But if I turn off the AC, it jumps right back up to 250 to 260 KW. It's frustrating. I'm usually traveling with a dog and/or grandbabies. Often there's nowhere to go sit and wait for the truck to charge in a place that's safe from debilitating heat. It's be in triple digits on all my summer road trips.
I remember you all were going to make a video about why McKayla ditched her ID.4. Did I miss that video or it never happen? Will it happen? I kind of want to know why though 😃
19:55 ...as a software engineer, this experience (including the hot cable) has the stench of c-suite executives making technical decisions with a complete disregard of engineer feedback. EA will file for bankruptcy before anything quantitatively improves.
I Live in a hot area and do not experience what you do with regards the air cond performance. We did in the R1S. We live in the inland Empire (often gets to 100) and travel to my parents in Las Vegas 3-4 times a year.
I don't quite get the layout of that Rivian site halfway through the video. Are you supposed to use the cabinets with the screens facing away from the vehicle, and the cable reaching around the back? I'm not just referring to the way Kyle parked, but the whole layout with the parking spots, and the pull-through lane, looks all backwards to me, based on where the Rivian charge ports are located.
The quip about the e-tron being a quicker road tripper is almost certainly not the case. e-tron charges quite a bit slower; while only being SLIGHTLY more efficient.
The audi holds 150kW to like 90%. It's not a great peak but it allows you to use the full range of the pack then stop once for 25-30 minutes tops and leave at 90%, so less stops to cover same distance
e-tron has a significantly more consistent charging performance. It will be pegged at 150 kW from 10% all the way to 85% regardless of temperature and auxiliary air conditioning for Walter.
Love the big coolers you use for the fresh dog food, just found out yesterday that the latest Tesla software update 2024.32, Tesla reduce functionality of the 12volt and USB sockets and without V2L us Tesla road triper and campers can no long keep our 12Volt coolers on while not in the car, a really big fail for Tesla for us X, S, 3 and Y owners. Very Very disappointed in Tesla, usually we get enhancements not features taken away with their software updates.
Someone is going to rig up an electric pump sprayer, pointed away from the charge port and directly at the connector. I can see it happening real soon.
The Rivian was the only game in town back then, but now there are EV trucks with better charging. Plus, it's in his best interest for them to know they need to improve things.

You did a FLO video, you really need to do a video on Circuit Electrique/Electric Circuit, the Quebec charging network.
Full on AC, Fans, and tires.. Yup.. that'll decrease range for sure.
Also the rack on the back probably has a decent effect on the aero, especially at 80-85mph.
It's the rack! I drive a stake truck with the gates on and sometimes off. Gates on drags in the wind behind the cab. Gates off the mph is way better
Hey Kyle. There is also a Drake’s in Burlington NC near the old Superchargers.
Now the canopies are TOO big and nice. That’s a new one…
Oakridge labs are still a big thing. I think they still do all the NIST and some "energy" projects.
Sad to hear about the issues between GM and Pilot/EV Go. They built a small Pilot One Nine truck stop near my house and it was supposed to have chargers, now nothing.
There’s gotta be something wrong with your truck. We have an S and a T and both will routinely hold 200kw charging through 45%
After watching many of your road trips it has become clear that the Tesla charging network is vastly superior in every way.
Rivian's Adventure Network has not failed me once in 2 years
Do the newer version Rivians have the same thermal throttling charging issues as your R1T?
Try driving the speed limit ! Would significantly improve efficiency
At the first supercharger with the surging it says limited by charger but it was clearly the car having problems😳 8:07
Still love my Lectron adapter for them enabling Tesla access before Rivian can!
this was a long one, but very enjoyable, thanks for the ride along
Rather than poor the water on the Tesla Handle, mist it with a spray bottle, give it a try!
US government plates are the TVA, Kyle😂 1:06:47
What about the Paducah Supercharger? Its about 20 miles east of that EA station.
i dubnno, id say swapping from chargepoint to alpitronic is an upgrade for merc
Dang didn’t know you guys were going through stl would have meet up. The subway in Mt. Vernon is good
Tint your windows to keep the cabin cool
Why do Rivan chargers face the wrong way? Looks confusing 😊
I made a RUclips video last year with water spraying the charge port full force and it still didn't keep it from overheating 😂
I kind of want to know why though 😃
i agree. get rid of all subsidies, especially for fossil fuels, also here in europe
Oh no winshield. I had to do mine and it was close to $1900.
19:55 ...as a software engineer, this experience (including the hot cable) has the stench of c-suite executives making technical decisions with a complete disregard of engineer feedback.
EA will file for bankruptcy before anything quantitatively improves.
I wish my Lyriq would have a charging curve, mine drops to the teens from 189kW due to thermal management.
Safelite repair, Safelite replace.... that's who I would have called
Safelite has to send it to Rivian to do the calibration so it's easier to bring it directly to Rivian for the entire job.
SCREAMS-n-FAINTS!!! Kyle curses....OH LORT!!!!! LOL!!!!
I Live in a hot area and do not experience what you do with regards the air cond performance. We did in the R1S. We live in the inland Empire (often gets to 100) and travel to my parents in Las Vegas 3-4 times a year.
43:58 DUDE?! You're just blowing past those airless tires like they're not there. Com'on, man.
Nice
Smokey is the bear’s name.
Smoky is what the tall Southern Appalachians are called.
"Smokey and the Bandit" is what the movie was called.
If Smokey walked into a gay bar, he’d be categorized as a mustache bear.
If that bar operated in the 80s, it was probably smoky, too.
A fun experience at a Flying J shower….oh boy! 😂😂😂😂
Fantik has a spray system to rain on the charger😂
I don't quite get the layout of that Rivian site halfway through the video. Are you supposed to use the cabinets with the screens facing away from the vehicle, and the cable reaching around the back? I'm not just referring to the way Kyle parked, but the whole layout with the parking spots, and the pull-through lane, looks all backwards to me, based on where the Rivian charge ports are located.
Where did the puppy buddies clip go?!
😂 we need a charging equipment failure rate due to spiders
Gas for the win
The quip about the e-tron being a quicker road tripper is almost certainly not the case. e-tron charges quite a bit slower; while only being SLIGHTLY more efficient.
The audi holds 150kW to like 90%. It's not a great peak but it allows you to use the full range of the pack then stop once for 25-30 minutes tops and leave at 90%, so less stops to cover same distance
e-tron has a significantly more consistent charging performance. It will be pegged at 150 kW from 10% all the way to 85% regardless of temperature and auxiliary air conditioning for Walter.
55:30 If the cabin is powered you could run a Level 1 out the window, better than nothing 🤷♂️
In the UK, for some stations we have the equivalent figure per kwh as Flying J except in £ not $. Avoid.
“Is that a Saint Bernard?” 😂 Welcome home y’all! Love, from middle Georgia.
If a UFO is overhead it may make your car's electricals go wonky. Like in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". 🛸
62 cents expensive!? It’s the equivalent of $1.05 here in the UK
Someone is going to rig up an electric pump sprayer, pointed away from the charge port and directly at the connector. I can see it happening real soon.
Derating to 41KW at a station that charges by the minute, at.$31
You make me pray for a Y truck. Size of a maverick Under 50k
Shots fired at Aquafina and Dasani lol
"*Rivian Road Trip to the Smokey Minor Foothills"
FTFY.
19:20 aaaaaaaw. Look at that droooooly monster.
Any else feeling like Out of Spec is falling out of love with Rivian? High praise last couple of years and now many issues and complaints. 🤷♂️
The Rivian was the only game in town back then, but now there are EV trucks with better charging. Plus, it's in his best interest for them to know they need to improve things.
I think they love the Rivian, just not necessarily for road trips… which is what this video is about.
I was going to buy a revian but prefer a Tesla due to the ease of charging
My apartment has level two charging that charges $.56 per kilowatt. It’s so obnoxious.
Apartment Chargin got th win
Oil companies get billions every year in subsidies 😢
is that a launch green rivian
No, it's wrapped
@@kekdogg OH yeah!
Psst, it's Smoky Mountains without the 'e'. - someone from Knoxville. 😁
What I don’t understand is why you are not using Tesla on an Etron roadtrip.
Really sucks getting 1.5 mile / kWh.
👍🌟🌟🌟👍
