GoldenPimp Well I do it all the time when I'm training/instructing people who are brand-spanking new and we don't have a cushion. Also it does help people get the concept of throwing as it eliminates some common newby mistakes and gets them to have honestly really good control of their opponent from day one. But I was buzzed and was tring to be humerous when I made my initial comment^^^. Cheers.
Spencer Martinez I like seeing instructors finish. Lifting is only half of the throw, especially when people start resisting during randori, then learning "just lifting" is where I get stuck with no follow through. Some seniors gave me very good tips on following through after lifting and that changed my throws a lot.
Matt, Great stuff, but please let us know if you break each one of the 10 throws down in separate video's. Love the quick 10, but would love to see the informed breakdown of each throw that you are so good at. Thanks for all the video's.
OOOooooohhhhh, that arm trap and double sleep are nice!! I think the arm trap variation would also work nicely for BJJ since it would be extremely hard to back take with the arms trapped that way.
Inside grip on the lapel you have control of the center but must lift the opponent's arm to throw. This was the favorite for myself and Koga. Outside means your arm rests on top of the opponent's arm from a lapel grip. It is more popular but your opponent has an inside grip on you.
Ok I just saw the most beautiful Nages...I'm in and subscribed...now to look for more...I'm an officer looking for more than my firearm!! Awesome techniques.
Amazing technique as usual Matt! Keep these videos coming :p I believe the nr.7 is Seoi-otoshi as there is not enough push to throw him from your back, i.e dropping down and nr.9 looks like Kata-eri-seoi-nage, which is a variation of regular Seoi-nage :)
the initial reaction when u see these videos will always be "poor uke!" n then u see the belt n u remember that he has probably done his share of nage no kata n it doesnt seem bad at all anymore :P
Really great tutorial. I like the fast tempo, hate it when tutorials take to much time talking. If I want an in-depth analyze, which of course is needed at certain points, then there are other videos of the fundemental movement patterns of the technique.
I did judo many years ago but I seem to recall being taught the seoi nage as follows: RH on opponent's left lapel as in general fighting grip. Keeping RH on lapel, turn and pivot. My RH would now be near my right ear (imagine you were going to show someone your bicep), and over the shoulder he goes. Everything else is the same except the RH grip on the opponent's lapel. Am I remembering a different throw or is this just a variation of the seoi nage?
1:52 when the guy in blue start to talk about the tricksy sneaky, he looses sight of his opponent, the guy in white really sneaked past him and tricked him HAHA owned!!!
Hi Matt, Very cool that you mention the seoi nage champ Koga. As a kid I watched his dvd endlessly. Thanks for the nice variations. As a sensei I am using a few for my judo selection class now. I have one question: 9) Cross lapel, isn't that a morote seoi nage?
+Callum anderson my uke was quite tall with high centre of gravity so I didn’t have to bend that much to get a good lift. If he was shorter though then I would have had to bend some more
Hi Matt, I have a question: Dr. Rhadi Ferguson gave a breakup of the new rules that the IJF have prepared for 2013-2016 (he did explained it if you go to his RUclips channel). As you posted this video, there are some variations of your techniques that could have a potential for Hansoku Make. My question is, would you ever consider making a video or a set of videos explaining/demonstrating on what to do in competition in conjuctions with the new IJF rules? Neal Adams did this back in '09.
I've very good at this throw. It's really the only pure judo throw I know. I was taught by USMC when I was 10 on a Navy base on Guam. Somehow they knew this throw would really make a difference and I have used at least 4 times to put down an attacker and flee. One point, when I say taught I mean they made me practice every day and used pain to reinforce mistakes. But my move is so much more violent then these. My goal is to get my opponent as high as i can by bumping my hip. Your opponent rolls across and down your legs. in my move once i have him in the air I want to strike him with the earth. I always knock the wind out of my guy and in real danger i was told to not let go of his arm to try to break or dislocate an arm. What style did they teach me? Combat judo?
andocrates my understanding of it is in a real fight you want to release them when you throw; holding on to them just makes their landing softer. That’s my understanding; I’ve been in situations where I’ve thrown someone and they stayed down due to the pain of landing and having the air knocked out of them, of course both of those go together.
nice vid. this one tournament there was one guy who was a pain in the ass, he had mastered drop seoi nage and demolished everyone with it, he was a douche because the way he did it made you land on your head/neck, begging for a serious injury
Sounds like he did it wrong, then. He most likely was a douche anyway, but I can't see how you could do it properly and have your opponent land on their head.
Matt Henderson yes it was a nasty unique variation, i remember being in a low defensive stance, in a very fast automatic manor he turned in and jumped backwards into my legs with his butt and feet as he dropped, so it was more like a leg takeout blocked by his back, and the fall was like being dragged over a barrel face first into the ground.
Matt Henderson The worst part is that before the fight the ref warned him about using it and warned me to watch out for it (something like "watch your neck with the drop seoi nage") so I knew it was coming but thought he might not dare because of the ref's warning, but that didn't stop him. I think he got a wazari for that (even though I landed on my back after landing on my head the ref couldnt bring himself to award ippon for it). He kept trying it over and over so I was kept on the defensive, having to break grip, parry step and push him away whenever he committed to turning in. He looked a bit silly flinging himself in a ball to the floor at my feet with no grip, I felt like kicking him or just stand there going ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The refs at that point didn't tolerate defensive groundwork in competitive play and would call matte if I hadn't got him to submit in like 10 seconds, he must have called matte like a dozen times, so there wasn't much I could do, I mean how do you throw or counter a guy that just keeps flinging himself to the ground when you try anything? We both got penalized for fighting defensively, the time ran and I lost with a sore neck and headache (and probably bruised shins too). :(
NlKNAK72 Couldn't you have gone to back control when he did that? I'm not too clear on the rules of Judo newaza :/ but it sounds like he was just giving you his back. Is there a rule to prevent newaza if one competitor is standing?
First: I'm asking Mr. Matt D'aquino if I'm not mistaken. NOT YOU! Second: I am fully aware of the info at ijf.org. Three: even if I'm fully aware of 'that' info, it would be 'greatly' beneficial to me and 'the Judo community' if any video demos of the rules are presented. A little 'visual understanding' might suffice any future conundrums. Nuff said! I will wait only for Mr. D'aquino's response, ciao…
because being thrown skilfully or not is still effort and credit should still be given to the Uke! think of all the bad takes and repeats that possibly could have happened due to the editing style of the clip! :O Having done the nage no kata alot as the uke was just my way of saying exactly that he can be thrown without a problem. I wouldn't know for sure if he has been thrown a 100 times per training all his life no? haha.
Go to ijf.org to find all the information you need. Ferguson's breakup is out of date so forget about it. All the variations shown in this video will be legal next year (based on the ijf rule changes published in december 2012). The new rules will be tested on high level tournaments only. After some time the ijf will take a look at the results an reconsider the changes, take some changes back or "propose" new changes. Time will tell.. :-)
the foot work is beautiful
So much information. It's hard to believe that so many techniques exist.
lol , you are noob? it's just 10 kusure from 1 technic, you can find infinite kusures from all the techniques and it's not hard to learn =/
juan pablo cedeño
Ya I'm a noob. Take it easy on me ok? Otherwise I'll throw you with the 7th variation of Ippon Seoi Nage!
juan pablo cedeño What the fuck you call someone a noob in JUDO???? Obviously a nerd.
Japanese are obsessed with variation, bro. Once you learn the underlying move you can figure out most of them just by practicing and sparring
Oh trust me there is more. I know because I take Judo and you have to remember 50+ throws plus pins. That is ALOT!!
the opponent face expression is changing gradually with every throw lol
haha wish he is the one throwing
I like how the throws aren't really necessary but still done.
In the demonstration. He doesn't actually have to throw him, he could just get the motion and lift him off his feet.
Doug Perkins nah i like throwing people :) Especially when they let me
Spencer Martinez
How exactly do you demo Judo without throwing your partner?
GoldenPimp Well I do it all the time when I'm training/instructing people who are brand-spanking new and we don't have a cushion. Also it does help people get the concept of throwing as it eliminates some common newby mistakes and gets them to have honestly really good control of their opponent from day one. He is so quick!
Thanks
You make it look so easy! (Which, of course, is the result of hours of uchikomi) Good instructional!
So true
my favorite throw. love the breakdown on the setups
I've noticed #7 and #8 are really good variations if you're tall because dropping down on the mat compresses your height and generates momentum.
You’re exactly right
Matt, thanks for demonstrating the ten different variations
OOOooooohhhhh, that arm trap and double sleep are nice!! I think the arm trap variation would also work nicely for BJJ since it would be extremely hard to back take with the arms trapped that way.

Coach is awesome.
Thanks :)
love your videos matt d'aquino
Thanks mate
I like the 3rd one I have gotten use out of that
Good to hear
I really like the 3 outside grip. I like using that one to set up my o soto gari as well.
I love the inside grip seoi nage for me , as I am smaller , it makes it easier for me to do .
Me too
love it dude, wish i was a short guy so i could do this throw so easily.
Great techniques, I'm just starting to work with my kids. Thanks.
loved the seoi nage especially the arm wrap excellent, ten ways to throw with Ippon seoi nage, great teaching video.
Thanks. Don't forget to subscribe as i am posting new Judo videos every Monday
My favorite technique. Thanks
Amazing ideas, its really nice to see all these variations in one video.Easy to use this video as a reference to memmory bank :)

@@BeyondGrappling you know it man. I don’t have a kettlebell, but I have regular free weights. Is there a way I can rig one of those to do this?
@@mekugi I don’t think so

Merci !

Nice work. I know what we'll be covering tomorrow night.......
So good
easy but very common and useful throw !

The Seoi Nage i learned was right hand collar grip, left hand sleeve grip, right elbow below arm then use that for throw
That is morote seoi nage, a different throw.
Very good.
This was great!
Nice Seoi!!

Totally awesome channel, just started judo, helps to open my mind to a few more variation, subscribed.

Personally I dont recommend practicing dropping on the knees without a knee pad, other wise you may hurt your knee just like I did.
Hey there! Thanks for another awesome training video. I've learned alot just by watching your channel =]
Wow, you're awesome man!!!
Thanks
That when a bit fast for me D: but I love the first one, its so easy to catch people off guard with it ;)

holy crap my mind is blown by the speed at which he does this throw. he's probably done about 10 million to get that fast.
I was thought another one.
Grab them by both sleeves and hold on to them and then continue with the throw.
It makes hara very difficult.
Very true
These are good. I wish that he had shown them in slow motion.
That first one is wicked.. :D
Like from Brasil.

As a sensei I am using a few for my judo selection class now.
I have one question: 9) Cross lapel, isn't that a morote seoi nage?
+foscarv morote means two hands
So a cross lapel is still a seoi nage
+foscarv morote means two hands so if you are still gripping with one hands it’s ippon
@@BeyondGrappling Thanks for the explanation. Keep up the good work!
@@foscarv no worries
nice
