I cross shopped a 2024 X5 50e (M-Sport Professional) with this All terrain. I didn’t appreciate the floaty ride of the Benz. My X5 PHEV offers air suspension with 22” wheels, combined with the lovely B58 Inline 6 motor it’s a masterpiece. I really wanted a wagon, but I couldn’t deny that the X5 is a better vehicle overall. (Especially since the price difference was $4k.) Also, I’ve had the X5 for a year now, I can say that getting on average 75 mpge is a no brainer for me.
I just got the Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered for $13.5K less MSRP. It is awesome. I can do all of my city driving in pure EV and long trips on hybrid. It's quite sporty with the Ohlins dampers, too.
Afaik the passenger can watch content while the vehicle is in motion. There’s no prism but a camera checks if the driver is glancing at the passenger’s screen and dims it. I have had this 2025 E450 for about 2 months and 1400 miles. I upgraded from a 2014 volvo xc70. I like the mercedes. Great review of the car here in this video. All in all I like the car. The doors are really my only complaint in terms of easy of opening. I believe the handles and doors are the same on the S class but on the S class the ease of opening upon entry is way better. A mechanic I know told me that they did not put the same mechanism that exists on the S class that assist with the door opening. It is fine but worth noting. The drive is fantastic. The car is very comfortable. The technology is "fine", coming off my 2014 (without a backup camera) in many ways I wish cars would veer more retro as opposed to how many inches of screens can we put in front of you the driver and see if you can still pay attention to the purpose of the machine, DRIVING!
Alex, The eye-watering prices and breathtaking depreciation of these European luxury wagons make the Crown Signia look like an absolute steal. Mind you, some might say the Mercedes 40/20/40 rear seat 12:00 is worth $45,000 in 'IKEA furniture' on its own. 😉
The Crown Signia is a great economical, front-wheel-drive based platform (with all-wheel-drive added in). Anything C-class and above (the point where a "true" Mercedes begins), within the Mercedes range, are Rear-wheel-drive platforms (with the 4-Matic versions having all-wheel-drive added in). 2 different beasts. Within the Toyota fold, a Camry-based Lexus ES300 (front-wheel-drive based platform) is not the same as the Lexus LS500 (rear-wheel-drive based platform), and the prices reflect that market positioning. Size-wise, they may not be far off, however.
Living in SoCal, I see my fair share of EQSs and EQEs. What's interesting is I've literally never seen one on the road with the Hyperscreen option. I personally don't like it either and, anecdotally, seems like most MB customers also aren't fans.
Why why WHY are passenger screens a thing? It's so unnecessary and redundant. Why is luxury in today's day and age seen as how many screens you have in a vehicle rather than comfort and quality?
I test drove the E450 AT and the Audi A6 AR, while loving the MB, decided to go a little lower on price and profile so bought an Audi AR Prestige. As time went on I disliked it more and more and after 4 months I sold it, thankfully only lost $5K due to an awesome offer from Carvana. I'm going to wait until next model year and get the MB AT. The Audi handling was way too soft, even in Dynamic mode which is the firmest. When stepping on it, the whole wagon rocked back and forth which really irritated me. Same with braking, whole vehicle ended up leaning forward. Never felt a car do that before. The engine was nice and powerful but I really hated the ride. Having come from a 2020 MB E450 wagon, one before the AT, I missed that nice firmer ride. I'll need to do some more longer test drives in the MB to ensure it doesn't handle like the Audi AR. I love wagons and will continue to drive one until they are all gone, hopefully never. Great review BTW Alex. Keep them coming.
Here in Austria, you can also get 3 Outbacks for the price of the E450 All-Terrain. 😂 At much higher base prices though. Still it’s a beautiful ride, especially the E450 d.
I haven’t sat in the newer seats but those old seats were horsehair over a spring bottom. No foam there and quite comfortable but much firmer than the plush seats from the American cars in the day.
@@bobbbobb4663And those old seats did not age well. The top padding would get flat and you'd be sitting on springs after a few years. I had a friend who had a succession of aged Merc diesels and I hated riding in them (plus he drove like he was 90).
Thanks. I have a '96 Mercury Sable Wagon . . . and the transmission just failed. Guess now I can justify getting a new wagon. I lean toward the Volvo -- even the V60 XC -- mostly because it's hard for me to spend as much for a car as I used to for a house. Remember when coffee was a nickel? Me, neither, but I remember phone booths and "Buddy, can you spare a dime?"
The screens and shiny black in the Mercedes are deal breakers for me. I much prefer the classic and timeless, yet modern and fresh, design of the Volvos. 🇸🇪🐾 ✨️ ✨️ ✨️
Current XC90 Inscription owner, it's perfect for me and our 2 Giant Schnauzers! When it’s time, I'll take a hard look at a V90CC or another XC90. Can't wait to see Mulberry.
I debated all of these. I bought a V60 Cross Country. Is it incredibly techy? No. But it's supremely comfy, absolutely excellent Bowers & Wilkins audio, and looks great. After 13 months of owning it, I actually love it more now than when I bought it. It also has a bit more of that vertical hatch space compared to a V90.
I’m disappointed that with the removal of the 3rd row jump seats (which was a good move), they still don’t give you a spare tire. My A6 Allroad at least has an inflatable spare. My biggest 2 gripes about my A6 Allroad: the seats don’t have any thigh support, and there is a miserly amount of driver-accessible storage. Center console storage is nil, glove box is small, and the phone charger is under the armrest so it’s very awkward to access it.
This looks very nice, but personally.... I am a Volvo guy when it comes to wagons. More minimal, less piano black, less focus on screens... it's a matter of taste though.

The Mercedes-Benz and the Volvo imo are the best ones overall even though they aren't 1000% perfect. Easiest to live with in terms of reliability, maintenance etc. There's good information available for them if you don't want to go to a dealership etc. and the parts aren't outrageously priced. For me, it's those 2 every time.
The reliability on both has been awful, and Mercedes parts have never been cheap. BMW would be a better bet, but maybe not in M5 form. I wish they'd bring the regular 5-Series wagon.
@@markmiller3279 Mercedes-Benz has made a few missteps along with Volvo but the wagons are fantastic. And the SL too, what a fabulous car that is. That's in a class of its own.
