The process you described sounds the same for the 2022-2023 Chevrolet Bolt. I bought two new fobs from a reputable seller on eBay for $46 (i.e. $23 each) The fobs purchased on eBay look identical to the OEM Chevy fobs, except the Chevy logo is missing. Paired (programmed) them myself following the directions outlined in the owner's manual. Tested and verified they work. Then had the actual metal key blanks cut at the local Ace Hardware store for $5 each. So now I have 4 fobs for the car. I took one and wrapped it in several times in aluminum foil (so the car does not recognize the fob in in vicinity of the car) and put it inside a magnetic mount weatherproof case and hid it under the car for emergency use.

I bought a used 2012 Honda several years ago and it had the key with fob built in but only came with one. I wanted to get a second key so I called a few Honda dealers. First quote I got was $160. Second quote was $80. I called back the first one on accident thinking I was calling a third dealership so I mentioned that other dealer in the next town over quoted me half his price. All of a sudden he goes well I’ll tell you what I have an open appointment today if you can get here in a half hour I’ll beat his price and do it for $60 lol

I have a 2010 Cadillac SRX and the programming process for an additional fob was identical to what you showed (except the drivers door does have a lock). The 5 turn and placement of fob to program worked perfectly as shown. But one thing you didn’t mention (perhaps you didn’t try) the car would start but would not drive. I discovered that the transmission is disabled for 30 minutes to hinder this as a method of theft. After 30 minutes (actually I just tried the next morning) everything worked. The dealer parts counter guy (not service dept) was kind enough to cut the key for me for free. Saved me a ton of money and the cheap blank fob I purchased on Amazon was an exact duplicate of my original Cadillac fob with the Cadillac emblem. I don’t even know which was which now 10 years after I did this.

You can buy new generic key fobs with or without a physical uncut key. My 2005 Prius remote died but I still had the physical key so I bought a new remote without physical key to save a few bucks. And yes, any locksmith can cut a new key but it would have been easier if you had ordered your key fob with a blank key. You can buy an uncut blank ELR key online to be cut. For your 2015 Chevy Volt (and also Chevy Bolts) they have a physical door handle with a hidden key slot on the driver door covered by a plastic cap. You pry off the cap with the physical key. I guess for the ELR without physical door handles they thought it was too awkward to insert a key in the that cut out area of the door and opted to put the key hole on the hatch and had to devise a way to unlock the doors.

The Chevy Volt requires one key fob to create a 2nd key flob. Where as the Chevy Bolt requires two keys to create a third key. Where one only has one key fob and desires a 2nd key fob, I recommend going to a Automotive Locksmith and they will provide the key, program the key, and cut the key for under $200.00.

My local locksmith bought the key cutter for the flat keys in modern cars. However Lowes and other places like that do not cut this style key. The key cutting machines, they can cut home style keys, and I have never seen one that can cut a car key - the new style. Sure someone will make one someday, and they even have some self serve key cutters that are loaded with key fobs with buttons on them, and sell them cut for about $50 or $75.
My local locksmith also spends about $1,200 a year to update the computer program that can program the key fobs for any car on their list. (so most of them).

The dealer was quoting the factory FOB (which is close to $200 MSRP just for the FOB) plus the labor time to program. I am sure they were quoting the "book" time to reprogram the entire system (which would be needed if you lost all keys and/or you wanted the key you did not have to be removed from the computer so it would no longer work on the car). The funny thing is if the tech did not know about the programming method you used (which is very possible), they would have gone through the longer method used to reprogram the entire system.
You might have better luck with a locksmith to have the new key blade cut. Some manufactures cut the key off the VIN before it is shipped to the dealer, which is why in those cases the dealer will require proof of ownership on the car before they order a new key for a customer. I have also heard of dealers saying they will not cut keys (if they have a machine to do so) for customers who did not buy the key fob from them.

That's only if you run the main battery out AND also run the 12v battery out so the car won't unlock. That's not what he's talking about. He's just talking about just losing the key fob. Then with Tesla, if you lost your keycard, you 1. use your phone and 2. Then just order another card on the app for 45.00

    • @LordStevie

The HV battery doesn’t run anything the 12v one does. If your 12v battery dies, you’re basically bricked. You ever have a 12v battery die on an EV? I have, on my i3. On the Tesla, the HV battery will charge your 12v. On my i3 the 12v would charge when the car was plugged. 12v batteries still die regardless.

This is true for a lot of GM products - Ford _used to be this way too_ (programing a key or fob with at least the "primary" one still around). Most European brands and some Asian brands you'll need a "scan tool" or an ODB II "dongle" with a phone app to add an additional key fob. The fobs are about the same as what Dave shows but to program / add it could involve $75-$800 for the gear to do it. I probably wouldn't buy some brands unless they come with both keys/fobs or unless the seller will include an additional one (and it's in writing).

Yup. Don't know when mercedes switched over to fobs, but the newer ones, 2000's, are almost impossible to reprogram. I've looked online and even places that specialize in making electronic keys don't do mercedes keys. If you order one from the dealer, they have to get it from the mothership in Stuttgart.

Not the best idea to leave your car keys out in plain site. My friend has his car stolen after his house was broken into.

GM has not engineered a reliable car for years. This type of jerryrig is a joke in an 80k car. What group of engineers thinks this is the way to go? I would be worried about this very bad engineering throughout the car.

"Free On Board." It originally comes from the shipping industry, where it signifies the point at which ownership and responsibility for goods transfer from the seller to the buyer. In the case of a key fob, it refers to the small remote control device that is used to lock, unlock, and sometimes start a vehicle remotely. The term "key fob" suggests that it's a portable device that carries the electronic key function for the vehicle.

First of all you are, by the manufacturer, entitled to two key fobs, your dealer cheated you. I bought a Cadillac 2016 ATS-V hi-performance coupe and was offered a key replacement plan when I purchased. For about $200.00 I could have two replacements as long as my warranty lasted. The salesman told me to wait a few months and ask for a replacement to have the extra third fob. The fob you have is the same fob used by my Wife’s 2014 Cadillac SRX, my 2016 fob is completely different and neither vehicle has the convoluted system yours does to program a key. I’m not familiar with ELR but don’t plan to become familiar either. My 2016 ATS-V came with a 5G system so I should be good for a while but your phone app will only work as long as 4G lasts so guard that second key fob. You really should find out who has that other fob or you might find your driveway empty some morning.
