Van Halen Brown Sound with Same Rig as Eddie -- Live 1968 Marshall in Studio

- I recently acquired and restored a 1968 Marshall Super Tremolo. I thought I'd try it in my Brown Sound setup. I'm happy. :-)
Rig:
Boss GE-7 with upgraded opamps substituting for my original 6-Band MXR EQ, which is excessively noisy for some reason
1968 Marshall Super Tremolo (stock configuration with tremolo circuit disabled)
Vintage Sylvania 6CA7 power tubes
VARIAC set to 90V
1967 Celestion 20W G12M Greenback doing most of the work
Vintage JBL D120F adds some lower mids
Shure SM57s
Lindy Fralin Pure PAF humbucker with slight overwind (original PAFs aren't beefy enough)
Kemper profiles of this rig will be coming soon...
That is THE sound. It's incredible. I'm a really big fan of the 5150 amps but this is really it when it comes to Ed's sound.
5150 is not even close
this, is one of those sentences, when it is really important to use commas.
@@johnmarshall3903 yeah, the amp he helped design and tour with isn’t even close to his sound
Lol I don’t think he ever meant that amplifier for this sound. He obviously evolved past this in his sonic journey. I am continually impressed by peoples ignorance of this simple fact. 5150 was never meant to copy the old crunchy brown sound. I mean don’t get me wrong. I love this sound. Always will. However, I love my original Blockletter 5150 for entirely different reason, exactly for what he meant it for.
@@ivanzivanovic4013 Yeah the magic is in the player, not the gear but we as guitar players can't seem to help falling in love with the old gear ;). The classical world is proof of that with their old instruments and such.
My left ear enjoyed it
Ed's guitar is panned left on the album.
😂
😂😂😂
I think he faked it myself
@@dsvet Right... Clever
this is the most authentic VH tone i have ever heard, (and i have listened to a million)
Agreed, but give mine a listen too! It’s on my channel
it sounds good but its not it. its missing alot of harmonics .ed used a load box built by Jose Arredondo with the variac. ed didnt use a boss e.q.
he's not doing the pick scrape > finger slide before each C>D of the main riff either@@kingkrollinvention
@@kingkrollinvention I need to get one of those boss GE-10 equalizers.
As close as you are going to get without Ed's hands. Great tone.
Ed does a lot of subtle things with his hands, because he’s Ed.
@@j_freed And because he has hands.
Seeing VH 42 years ago was a mind blowing trip from start to finish. Eddie ran, jumped, played his skinny little ass off, and never missed a beat.
Ed was the tone master. He was so good he had 2 different era's of tone and they were both fantastic. A lot of people love the early VH tone the "brown sound". I also like the wet dry wet tone he also came up with from 5150 onward. I think they're both great.
I enjoyed both tones as well, but I really loved the Sammy Hagar era tones.🤘
Oh man. I knew Lindy back when I lived in Richmond decades ago. I've witnessed him hand winding those pickups. Very cool to see his name come up here.
Uncanny resemblance. Absolutely spot on
SO good, Jimi! I listened to it on max volume, the way it was intended to be heard 🤘 You're like a brilliant mad scientist constantly seeking the secret to authentic tones!
Thanks man. I feel like a forensic audio engineer.
@@TopJimiStudios Make sure to email me when the profile is available for sale !!
@@TopJimiStudiosis the profile for this out yet? I want to get it and your other evh brown sound profile, but I really want this one. Kemper btw.
I’m drooling! That’s one sweet amp. Exactly the tone of VH 1. Luv it!
RIP Eddie Van Halen. Sorely missed.
I can heasr NO difference from the Eddies sound... great job man
I listened to V Halen 1 and 2 today. I'm a 35 year guitar teacher. 80s kid. At first I was listening to the tone, how did it match up. Isthe Eddie swing in there......then I realized I forgot and was just listening to Van Halen. Great job man. That takes a lot of time, research, talent, work, money, good ears, patience, etc. Hats off to you, TJ.
That's the sound. I'm happy, but sad because that's going to be near impossible to put together now. Nothing else I've heard sounds like this.
Eddie would be surely proud of your tone ❤
He’d applaud the effort and playing but Ed always hated this tone. Billy Corgan told him once it was his favorite tone and Ed responded by saying “Why!? That album sounds like shit!”
@@AeonOfAwareness Randy Rhoads was not happy with his tone, either, on Ozzy's monstrous first two landmark albums.
You ESPECIALLY nailed the EQ settings! 👍 SOUNDS BEAUTIFUL!
I saw the 1980 VH Invasion tour. Eddie was in his prime then, IMHO! This is amazing. The raw brown tone from the correct amp, correct voltage, and correct speakers! Beautiful.
I would just like to salute you for not playing the chorus triads with vibrato like 99% of the rest of RUclips. :)
I think so much of the power of the guitar part of the chorus is just letting those chords ring with that incredible sustain and tone. I think a lot of people try to mask the dissonance of the major third between the third and second strings when the second string isn’t slightly detuned by using a lot of vibrato.
Minor point but all this stuff adds up!
Thank you. Definitely gotta detune that B string.
That tone is spot on. I've got a Friedman Vintage Plex coming in a few days. It's based on Dave Friedman's personal '68 Plexi, his favorite amp. He was Eddie's rig builder for awhile. It's got a built in variac that goes down to 90 volts with a toggle switch. I'm pretty excited to get it. Great video thanks for sharing
Nice touch at the end, bro 💯
RIP EDDIE.
not only a player but an inventor..
A guitarists guitarist.
We salute you.
Beautiful and Brown!!!!!!!
Best EVH tone on youtube
I had never cried over a guitarist passing away but I did when Eddie died.
I did too. I never realized how much he affected my life until he died.
Such a joy to listen and see you playing a classic tune. Long live the mighty Van Halen.
Nailed it and with an ESP guitar!
Great tone. Best I’ve heard for sure
Wow, just found your channel. This is the best VH tone I have heard. You knocked it out of the park. Now, tell me about that "circles" guitar with the reverse ESP banana headstock. I've never seen that. Great job!!!
It’s one of my Frankenstein builds I was doing for a few years. EVH body, custom neck, original Floyd Rose, Fralin PAF.
Does my heart good to see guys of all generations paying tribute to arguably the best rock guitarist of alltime and my childhood here Mr. Edward Van Halen. I'm certain he would thrilled to see all these video tributes in his honor. I also hope Valerie..Alex and Wolfgang watch these too to pick up their spirits whenever they feel down. The love respect and dedication shown by his fans will never wane. Wish I could have met Ed in person. Besides shaking his hand and thanking him for making the musical soundtrack to my life inevitably I would have asked if he ever ate any brown M and M's behind Dave's back on the road touring lol. Rest in peace Eddie....you are sorely missed but your music will outlast us all.
Yep, you got it dialed. That first sustained chord you hit, I went to immediate stank-face. You know, that face you make when something rocks, and it's just RIGHT in the world. Basically stayed that way until the camera panned around and then it became the sly grin. Went back to stank face later. Nice work.
Yes! Nailed it! Also a killer collection of amps you have behind you.
What an amp! I am currently gathering parts to build my 68' 12xxx. The best tone ever. You can really hear it's full majesty with that VH rythm section playing behind it.
Man, that's bad ass. Sounds fantastic! Great job.
Excellent! His Kemper profiles are incredible. Definitely some of the best out there.
Wow - nailed that tone.
Awesome sound! Nailed it. Great playing as well. You can really tell that you love what you do. Keep up the great tone search and producing these awesome profiles!!! 🤘👌👍
Best VH1 sound recreation I've heard.
THIS is closest to THE sound I have ever heard anyone replicate... Incredible...
Wow, that is absolutely spot on! Great stuff
Nailed it. Perfect tone!
Sounds great! The boss GE-10 is great too if the GE-7 is noisy.
Tuned in the Key of Ed!
Man that sounds great!!
Sounds great. Very nice job. I remember seeing pictures that were taken during the recording of VH 1 in the studio. I believe Eddie used a 2 X 12 cabinet but you definitely
have the right speakers and amp. Very cool.
Dude, this just makes me smile!
Outstanding!!!
Many have attempted what you've just done perfectly in my opinion.
The others have failed for the most part.
You didn't.
5 out of 5 Stars my friend.
I'm turning my outlandish praise mode off now😀😎
Nailed it!
It looks promising ...intrigued by the additional sounds you'll come up with with this new ..set up 🙂
Looking forward to hearing the Kemper profiles!
Spot on!
Killer tone! I have the 100w super lead that is 38 units before Eddie's 12xxx so I do know the tones that could be had from those monsters! Superb clip!
Very cool. I based my restoration on photos of Super Lead 12267. Is that yours?
@@TopJimiStudios Yes it is! Cool man! I also restored and co-owned 12257 with a friend back in the early 00s. These 12xxx amps really are THE Marshall to have.
Most accurate tone on RUclips
Damn that is on point.
Great job it sounds just like it!
Sounds AMAZING Jimi! Looking forward to the Kemper profiles!
Great job! Playing and tone spot on!
Sounds great. Looking forward to the profile.
Well done! Sounds _great!_ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤘🏻
Omg. Man you've really got that dialed in. Well done. The holy grail.
Thanks. I was really enjoying this. I think the neighbors called the law.
Well done Dude, well done. Hat's off to you.
Sounds outstanding
Looking forward to the kemper pack 🤘
That is SO dead on! Stoked right now.
Wow that’s a great tone 👍🏼🎸
Damn, this is so good. Looking forward to the profiles
Love that neck on the body!!! Awesome I had the circles but had to sell - offer I couldn’t turn down
SICK!!! Those bias grids are grilling some electrons baby!!!
Years ago, i've seen a almost close setup using a JMC800 series 1959 head, Boss overdrive peal for booster, Rockman attenuatore and HUSH, alesis Quadaverb, BBE Sonic maximizer and a ASA poweramp going thru a 4x12
f'n amazing, great job!! that's probably the closest to Eddie's tone that I've heard anyone come up with. I'd love to hear you play some more songs through that rig. Nice job man!!!
Must have been fun to do
Beautiful!🥹
Yeah man, sounds epic. Great playing and yep that setup is awesome. Definitely doing the EVH sound a lot of justice.
Sounds DAMN Good!
you nailed it
I got one of these heads with the tremolo disabled. (I guess a don’t have to get it fixed)
And I have a power soak.
And some matching 412 cabinets.
And a Kramer Frankenstrat!
I know what I’m doing tomorrow!
Ive heard that tone from many differenent rigs. Its not rocket science but there is nothing like a vintage marshal
yes that is the sound, woowww nail it!!
Damn, that is a rad tone.
Looking forward to your profiles! Sounds great.
Well that was spot on! Smoooooth!
Fan-fing-tasti c 🤘🤘
Dead on!
Cant wait for profiles
Good to see ya brother awesome as usual
It's f****** sick dude.
That sounds really good!
Absolutely Perfect.
Can't wait to get my hands on this profile. Also hoping for a Ritchie Blackmore-style Marshall Major one day ;)
Very detailed and precise, Thanks
THE tone
Cool sound and you came up with your own guitar solo.
Great tone! I just wish you had rolled the guitar volume down quite a bit on the verse and/or picked much softer. The sound is much less distorted on the album during those sections and that's at least 50% of the charm. Dynamics, it's all about the dynamics!
sick
Great tone! Perfect playing! And watching you I just realized I’ve been playing this wrong since ‘78.
no its just him playing it very wrong
Only thing missing is that the tube bias was cranked so they wouldnt run cold at lower voltage. Thats the cherry on top. Great Sound
Yes, I had the tube bias cranked up.
EVH THE LEGEND
Woah that sounds killer
That's the sound🎉
This is too good, man.
Love this! I want one!
I liked this 12 seconds into the video!
