You're always my go to RUclipsr when it comes to astrophotography. Your tutorials are very detailed but easy to follow. Wishing you clear skies, rest in peace.
Maybe you can make a Video how you capture a panorama with the 24mm (Focus stack? Tracker? Blend?) and explain foreground and sky technique for a perfect pano? Would be great!
May is coming up, and I don't know what to do without your WITNS video. I got up the nerve to try star trails because of you, so thank you for that. Rest in peace. You are missed.
Irix 15mm 2.4, Tamron 35mm 1.4 and 105mm 2.8 micro are the three I cart around with me. I enjoy focal length blends between the three when it's possible.
what i find most amazing about this vid is that you're filming near Golden Canyon when the sky looks to be popping off rather than capturing images. Nice!
Knowing what lenses to use and how to use them to capture a scene is really going to help me improve my compositions. I really like the advice at the end where you talk about swapping out the lenses during a shoot, and if one is using a tracker it's okay to get an off-brand lens. The prices on MPB are really good too! Thanks for sharing that resource.
Two quick questions ... 1. If you are looking for a smaller 50mm lens, have you considered the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f/1.8? True, it won't be an f/1.4, but it might be an option worth considering and it is tiny! 2. Have you tried the Tamron 35-150 f/2.0-2.8 lens and if so, what were your thoughts. It would definitely be a compromise, but it might be a viable compromise for a lot of amateurs for whom this is a hobby.
I have the 14mm f1.8, 24mm f1.4, 16-35 f2.8 gm II and the 50mm f1.2. the one I enjoy the most for astrophotography is the 14mm , what a beast! great video
Thank you Alyn for great video as always. Love your presentation style, no high drama just great info. Am using Tokina 14-20 f2 on crop sensor camera currently, really want to get full frame and now I know what lenses to get also. Now need to win lottery 😁
Hey Alyn, just pre-ordered your book! (paperback, was too late for hardback haha). Your channel, along with Night Lights Films has been a huge inspiration for me. I shoot with a 6D modded and an A7S 1st gen for timelapse stuff. I don't recall if you have a video reviewing the Sony A7 IV for astrophotography. I'd love that content and am particularly interested in how it performs in bulb mode for tracked images. It seems to do great just based off of the work you have done with it but a new camera is a big purchase decision and I'd like to have the best review I can get! Just a though, i know you're probably quite busy!
Thank You for the review of the wide and wide open lenses. But with the wide open you also need a faster SS using NPF rules 14mm 1.8 20.95s, 2.8 23.47s or accurate 10.47s vs 11.73s, f4 13.14 BUT you get a brighter image go figure. The nice thing about the 14mm or 20mm (18mm) is you only need one row pano two is better to get a 3:2 look and with the faster SS you can do a 200 deg. in less than 1 1/2 min even with NR on (move when in NR). They are also really sharp not needing a tracked/long exposure. The 50 is also good for tracking the moon eclipse like the 80 1.8 best. Just a note I was doing sunsets/MW's at Casa Grande AZ. and the rattlesnakes longer than I am tall (6'2") came by me on both sides and while doing MW's they went by in front of me several times, I always wear snake boots and shin shields on front and back of upper legs or Chaps. They are protected out west because they keep the mouse population in control. On the dunes are sidewinders, a long way to a hospital. In '69 I was in high school in Abilene High in Abilene Tx and every Aug. they had a snake roundup on the school grounds with barbequed snake (after milking) as a fundraiser. Just saying at night you do not see until you hear the rattle, Always wear at least full (font/back) chaps and boots and a tent with a floor!!!! With your car/camper a bag of mothballs used around wheels, at 16 I pumped gas and pickup trucks came in with added two side saddle tanks and after a little squirt under the trucks axles a snake or two would come out, just think about it please.
I'm personally using the Sony 20mm f/1.8 - nice for a compromise between the 14mm and the 24mm while saving on quite a bit of weight and a LOT of money compared to having both of them. Haven't been shooting much with 50mm lenses, but I recently got the Rokinon/Samyang 135mm f/1.8, and that one's been fantastic for wide-field deep-sky astro. I think it would be interesting to use it for a super high-res landscape pano, but my tripod head is kinda crap for panoramas that are that exact.
Thank you for this video, and yes a great choice…I can follow you completely. But if you’re looking for a smaller 50mm look out for the Voigtlander Apo Lanthar 50 mm f/2 Aspherical. Yes only f2 but razor-sharp wide open and no coma, so great. I’ve also the Sony 55mmf1.8 but the Voigt is much sharper. Look for the LensTip or PhilipReeve reviews if you’ve any doubts.
Hey Allyn, as an alternative look at the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8. Yes it isn’t 1.4 but it is still one of the sharpest lenses ever made. It does suffer from loca but that goes away by f2.8. Not to mention it is absolutely tiny. I have switched to using that instead of a 24-70 as my “regular” focal length due to the sharpness and immense weight savings. I can’t recommend it enough even if just to test it out. Plus it’s been out for ages so plenty of money to be saved on the used side as well.
Hi Do you have the Zeiss 24-70 or the 24-70GM? What’s the performance like? I was thinking of buying the 24-70 GM but am not sure which lens is better.
@@victorgordon3845 I have the 24-70 GM version 1. So the very very old one that came out around the same time as the Alpha series cameras. With the version 2 being out I can’t recommend even considering the version 1 to save some money. It’s just not sharp at all at 2.8 from about 50-70 mm. Anything on the shorter end and it’s great but for its size, weight, and cost there are far better options out there. I would get the tamron 28-75 2.8 in a heartbeat over the version 1 GM, problem is when I got it there were no alternatives.
Excellent information as usual in some of my favourite parts of the USA. The Alabama Hills are great and the Bristle Cones, etc. you would love Arches National Park!!
Alyn, I hope you enjoyed your visit to the states. There are a number of sand dunes around the western side of the country, including Great Sand Dunes National Park in lower Colorado. Those dunes reach up to 750 feet/228 meters, and bring a whole new level of knee and thigh pain, much worse than the Stair Master. Plus the added restriction in oxygen as the base of the dunes are about 7,500 ft/ 2.28 km high. But the sky views, on a cloudless night, are incredible.
Excellent vide! I also have the same 14mm and 24mm lenses. It’s definitely a great combination to have! Both the Sony GM lenses perform incredibly well too, so that’s a bonus. Glad you were able to make it to the US and get some beautiful images
Enjoyed ... as usual ! Budget friendly option could be the Samyang 24/1.8 which is a superb Astro lens just a notch lower than the Sony 24.1.8 and was designed with Astro in mind - even so far as having a dedicated Infinity button.
Thumbs Up and Subscribed. I am a Sony fan with two A7R iv and a couple Sony lens. I deviated from 'the family' and purchased a Tamron 28-75 that I like quite well. I really thought this video would tell me that an ultra wide, sub 20mm, was the only way to get great results. This is soooooooo cool because I was obsessed with getting another lens. I am gonna use what I have and new to astro (star trails thus far) having made a few crappy pics that delight me and will forge on and loving it!!! Thank You.
Hi. Have you used the Sony A7 III or Sony A7R III for Astro in the past? If so, how does it compare with your A7R IV? I have both those cameras and was wondering whether it was worth upgrading to the A7R IV if there’s a significant improvement.
I know this is probably a weird question but are cinema lenses usable for astrophotography, i mean most of the are in the F/1.2 to F/1.8 normally and since they dont have auto focus they are normally much cheaper. curious your thoughts about this
Holy cow @ 7:50min the picture of the two rocks the one on the left totally looks like a birds head. So crazy to look at and just think if someone carved that thousands of years ago. GREAT PHOTO !!!!
10:53 to that point, even tho you're not too keen on anything 2-2.8, have you considered adding the Tamron 35-150mm to your kit? You'd get the extra reach & have a decent aperture range to work with, especially if blending the scene with any of the 14/24/50 shots? I really wish Nikon (or Tamron) would make a Z version of that lens, I'd add it to my gear in a heartbeat for this particular blending possibility!
I have the same set up and it is spectacular! There is a secret behind the color science of Canon cameras. I will give you some lens suggestions for you. For this camera, get the Samyang XP 14mm f/2.4, Samyang 24mm f/1.4, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art, Samyang 85mm f/1.4 UMC or Sigma 85mm f/1.4 (performs way better at higher price), and Samyang 135mm f/2.0 (the greatest lens for astrophotography).
I have all three very similar lenses, but if I had to choose one, I ironically would get to 24, but if I could choose to, I will get the 14 and 50 lol. I do think the 14 is a bit too wide if you want to get really good detail, however
My default config is 24, 50 & 135 GM's with A7RIII & A7IV (full spectrum mod) & tripod in PD 10L Sling V1. Then in the 25L P.McKinnon everybag my Fornax Lightrack II, 12v battery, mini laptop, Leofoto pano kit & 200-600G (in car or lagguge bag/nearby). Might add the 14, 35, 85 (V2) GM at some point in the future. Once I started doing astro panoramas, I stop using my Sony GM trinity Zooms.
I never bought the GM trinity, went with the Tamron 28-200 and 200-600 G instead. I really like not having to change lenses at 70mm, and it sounds like you don't use zoom lenses out to 200mm anyways. I was planning on getting the 12-24mm GM, but it is huge, and I already don't like carrying the 200-600, so I am considering the 14mm GM or 14mm Sigma that just came out. The Tamron was fast enough to caupture the auroras clearly at f2.8, 0.5 second exposures, and iso 5000, but I always wanted wider and would have preferred faster, only one of which I get with the 12-24 GM, so I think I will instead be going for a 14mm prime (I use an A7RV by the way, cropping is not a problem). I do like your mini laptop idea. My only concern is running out of power.
My favourite lens is also the Sony GM 24mm 1.4....as for the 50mm, one option, if you are okay with sacrificing 5mm is the compact and lightweight Samyang 45mm 1.8 AF for 432.00$ CND which has garnered some very favourable reviews. Great video Allyn!!
My gf gave me the 14mm GM a few weeks ago, it's a beast. Now I use 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 85mm, 135mm and 150-500mm. I only used the last one for a moon shot though.
Thanks for the video. At 9:57, wouldn't it make it even better if you took the 24mm or even the 14mm and walked up closer to that rock to get a similar frame? The rock would have looked more detailed/dramatic no?
thanks alyn, perfect way to start my day. too bad the climbing over the sand dunes is so miserable seriously maybe somebody could organise camels to help people get around out there.✌🏻🤟🏼✨
You could go with the standard Sony 50mm 1.8 instead of the 1.4 version. Might be a but lighter for you. I decided on the 20mm 1.8, the 35mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 zeiss batis
Great vid and shots. Did you use a tracker on all shots? It wasn’t until the last lens (50mm) that you mention the star tracker and then say several times you always carry the tracker.
Maybe one could skip the 14 and 24 and just buy the 20? Unlike the 14 it takes filters and is a fraction the price of both. Instead of the 50 APO I purchased the 35 Voighlander APO on Allen’s advise. I might buy or rent the 65mm apo for Astro panorama
Awesome Alyn! I'm heading to Joshua Tree Monday night. Unfortunately there will be a large Moon but I couldn't pass up the opportunity while in the area. Bringing a 24mm and a 50. Perfect timing for the video. ;)
Great vid Alyn and thanks for sharing your thoughts on lens choice, all of which makes sense of course. You may have posted the answer to my question somewhere but what star tracker are you using and why? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the interesting video, my favourite lenses for my nikon are 11-16, f2. 8, my manual focus 28mm and 35mm and my sigma 10-20mm f4, on my canon 6d, I have my manual focus 35mm, canon 50mm, f1. 8 and I've just got a 20mm 2.8, which I have only used once. The lenses you use, are beyond my means
If you consolidated, limiting yourself to one camera and three or four lenses total, and selling the rest, you could afford them. Granted, I want three cameras and at least four lenses for them to share, so what do I know, lol.
Grad you mention the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm 2.8 for astro as a good budget option, since i just buy one used for the nikon z system very cheap. Great work amazing images!
Great video and thanks for the recommendations. I’m definitely interested in the 14mm GM but don’t have the money for it at the moment unfortunately. I noticed that one other person recommended the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8, I have that lens and it’s small and light weight. Have you considered this lens at all instead of your 50mm?
Love videos like that. Great pictures, great video. And because you talked about moon-bazooka. you should check out the tamron 150-500 which is way more compact and lighter than the sony 200-600 and also the 100-400. :)
What do you think about the Sigma 16mm 1.4 for the m6ii? Do you think that the rokinon 14mm drastically outperforms it to the point that I should replace my 16mm?
Thanks for a very informative video. I’m thinking of switching to Sony from canon and have my eyes on the G 20 and 85 mm f1.8 lenses - there doesn’t seem to be anything close in terms of price and performance in native RF lenses yet. Big question as a Sony neophyte is to decide between the a7iiii and a7iv. From what I can make out the latter has only marginal gains in terms of sensor noise performance but wins significantly in terms of ergonomics, video and AF. Have you tried out the a7iv yet or have any insight on the choice? Cheers, Des
The Sony a7iii is outstanding and you can open and edit raw photos on your computer or phone. Now the a7iv you need Lightroom to preview raw photos. I’d go with the a7iv and add a small rig half cage the grip on the a7iv and flip out screen is worth it also 33mp with 10bit video. I currently use it with the Sony 20mm f1.8 it’s the perfect hybrid combo!
Amused that I worked out where you were shooting before you mentioned the location. Good time to visit Stovepipe Wells. Too bad it looks like you didn't get to witness the valley just after a rain. See the Tufa at Mono Lake? Thanks for the learning and review videos. Recently found out that the prices finally dropped enough on the a7s ii's and will be picking one up for photography / video. The lens and iso videos have been quite helpful in working out what to expect.
Nice bit of kit but a bit steep. If you're just making art for arts-sake and uploading to the web/iPad just frame with the idea you're going crop out the edges where you'll see the coma/astigmatism. My sensor is 16MP but a 4K is 8MP and 1080P 2MP...
This is a very useful video as I have Sony gear and want to get more into landscape astrophotography when travelling away from home and away from my telescopes.

Nice one Alyn, safe travels and stay safe bud....
Thanks for the video! Have the Sony 14mm prime myself and absolutely love it.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful adventures and beautiful images 👍👍👍❤️
I purchased the Sony14mm 1.8 shortly after it was releases. I have captured some incredible astrophotography images with it.
Your girlfriend sounds awesome! I hope you gave her a diamond in return.
@@ryanaegis3544 Nah we broke up, she had a husband lol. Still have the lens though 😂
@@jeroenvdw Wow, sorry to hear that. Dodged a bullet on that one.
Thanks for the video. At 9:57, wouldn't it make it even better if you took the 24mm or even the 14mm and walked up closer to that rock to get a similar frame? The rock would have looked more detailed/dramatic no?
Great video, funny enough I have basically the same trip planned for next weekend. Literally that same pano at Joshua Tree was on my mind.
Super one Alyn, one question . . If you use a star tracker do you really need such fast lenses?
I always enjoy your vids Alyn.
What settings and mode do I need to put my camera in to take a timelapse video of the Milky Way in the night sky?
thanks alyn, perfect way to start my day. too bad the climbing over the sand dunes is so miserable seriously maybe somebody could organise camels to help people get around out there.✌🏻🤟🏼✨
Thank you for the video. Learned a lot about an area of photography I don't know much about.
I subscribed because of this video. Amazing channel!
The Sigma 28mm f/1.4 is also sick for Milky Way, panos and filming. My current favourite and most used lens.
You could go with the standard Sony 50mm 1.8 instead of the 1.4 version. Might be a but lighter for you.
I decided on the 20mm 1.8, the 35mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 zeiss batis
I'm going for the Sigma EF mount variants of these for my Canon EOS R. I'll likely add the 35mm F1.4 and the 135mm F1.8 as well.
Great vid and shots. Did you use a tracker on all shots? It wasn’t until the last lens (50mm) that you mention the star tracker and then say several times you always carry the tracker.
You should check out. The 35mm f0,95 for full frame. (Not sure which brands)
presumably I'd need some sort of tracker / equatorial mount ? in addition to those lenses ?
Interesting - even for a Nikon shooter. Can’t wait to see the results of your desert trip!
To the point. Thank you.
RIP Alyn. you will be missed by all stars
Super useful and informative! New sub!
Great video very informative. Glad to see you are having better weather than in the UK.
Enjoy the SW and Death Valley. Clear skies...
Get the 55mm 1.8 Sony. One of the GOAT Sony e mount lenses! Small, light and sharp!
2:01 the cop behind you was zoomin bruh, he was cruising lmaoo
Grad you mention the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm 2.8 for astro as a good budget option, since i just buy one used for the nikon z system very cheap. Great work amazing images!
Can Sony e 16 mm f2.8 be used for astro and star trails?
great video! love your milky way shots! so jealous!
What camera/lens did you use to shoot this video?
Perfectly beautiful
Have you ever considered the 135mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 for Panoramics and nebula
Yikes! I was in JTree the same morning you took the conjunction pic with the crescent moon! Cheers.
Wouldn't the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 be a good option for the 50-ish range?
For a lighter normal lens in your Trinity, how about the Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Zeiss lens at about 1/3 the weight of the Sony 50/1.4?
Great video packed full of information, confirming my thoughts on best focal lengths. Just need some cash now to get the lens I am missing 🤣
This is a very useful video as I have Sony gear and want to get more into landscape astrophotography when travelling away from home and away from my telescopes.
