What makes Mack cool in this and fit in well is that he actually knows his shit when he talks about it. Movies, games. He really was a kid of the 80's, not just an actor oblivious to the world. He lived what we lived and watching them shoot the shit about it all is really neat.
You know, i couldnt quite figure it out, but thats it.....Mack fits in so well because he is sincerely a fan of games and movies, and you can tell he is enjoying being there. Its not a PR appearance, its just a rad guy hanging out.
I so hope he comes back once in a while. Ive loved all his recent appearances.
I think it's a stretch to say he lived what we lived, but there were definitely some common experiences. More interesting to me is how humble and socially comfortable he is , he can just integrate with a group of old friends and find common ground.

You guys have touched on this but not put it together...
Jack Burton IS the ethnic sidekick, Wang is the hero. The story is just from Jack's perspective and he reacts as the Western audience would expect, astounded at all the magical and foreign happenings which the Chinese take as matter of fact. The movie takes us (westerners), through Jack, on an adventure we would never believe or expect, despite the fact that we think we are in control and understand the world.
Jack Burton ultimately helped Wang (and himself too of course) in destroying Lo Pan and bringing peace. Kurt and Dennis were great in this. I loved their chemistry.

It's one of the greatest movies ever made. Nonstop cool action scenes and set changes with monsters and supernatural ninjas. As a kid, I watched it over and over and over again on VHS and I enjoyed its mystique, but now that I'm a grown ass man child, I enjoy it for the same reasons except now there's the added layer of realization that Jack Burton is totally out of his element. It's a weird thing when your childhood memory meets your adult understanding.
